Shout out to my brother's friend, Carlos, for introducing us to this place. He claimed it's was "the best burrito in the Bay Area" and we were not disappointed, 10/10! We tried the chicken burrito and the carne asada burrito and split them to try both. The rice has good flavor, not dry, the chicken is seasoned, the beans are well cooked, and the guacamole has the perfect consistency to add flavor and moisture to the burrito so you enjoy it in every bite. The ingredients are perfectly balanced and there's flavor and happiness in every bite. The horchata is nostalgic. It reminds me of my mom's horchata. Moved to So. City from the Mission district so it's very very hard to match that standard. I've been looking around the neighborhood for some tacos packed with flavor and was hoping that Los Metates could deliver, unfortunately it missed the mark big time. The carne asada was very dry with little to no flavor (not even a little char or grease) it reminded me of almost boiled meat. The Al pastor was also dry, a little char but you couldn't taste any of the spices the Al pastor is usually marinated with. The carnitas were cooked well, but again NO flavor. I asked for everything on my tacos, just to see that everything was thrown in all together with hardly any cilantro or chopped onions. The limes were hellllllla dried out too. I read one of the reviews that nachos are thicker compared to other restaurant nachos and yes thumbs up for that. I've been trying out the mexican spots near my office and this place is pretty solid. My favorite thing is that they have Lengua, Cabeza, Buche and Tripitas :) I've had the Al Pastor and Carne Asada so far, both are great. Things are very reasonably priced and the staff is very friendly. They have a maybe not-so-secret back patio too if you're looking for some al fresco dining, highly recommend that. Ordered a super burrito , 2 asada tacos , 1 Cabeza taco,a torta cubana, a jarrito and a canned coke for a total of $48.00 . -Al pastor Burrito was a 9/10 it was flavorful and really good. -asada tacos were 9/10 again the asada was full of flavor and tortillas were good. -torta cubana was 7/10 wasn't a traditional torta cubana as it didn't have the milanesa im use to inside of it. Flavors were ok not bad still edible. - Cabeza taco I would rate a 5/10 for the reason being that it had an after taste if you have eaten cabeza before you know what I'm talking about , It doesn't always have that flavor but for some reason at some restaurants it does. I used to come here once a week as a treat, when I worked in South SF. I moved to LA and lived there for 6 years, all the while missing my beloved Metates. I finally moved to San Jose a couple of years ago and while closer to Los Metates, I could never find a reason to drive up and taste the carnitas I'd been craving for literal years. Yesterday I had that chance and Los Metates fulfilled every scent and tastebud memory which had been haunting me for so long. I first starting going there in the late 90s when I was working near Oyster Point. Many of my coworkers raved about the place and I finally tried it. Awesome. This is a classic taqueria and what they lack in decor they more than make up for in the quality and taste. Everything is made fresh and the salsa bar (I think that's what it's called) is a plus. You can load up on salsas, fresh cut radishes (oh yeah) cilantro & jalapenos. But their burritos and tacos are why everyone goes there. Big, tasty and best of all--cheap. The long lines at lunch are a testament of how good this place is. I stopped going there when I changes jobs, but have returned now that I work in SSF again. I have been going to Los metates since I was a kid with my family and as an adult I loved going as well however as of recently the last 4 times I've gone, their burritos have gotten extremely salty and I can't even eat it anymore. This place was amazing! My friends ordered BBQ pork tacos (al pastor), but I went for a little variation. I ordered chicken, steak, and pork tacos (without onions). My goodness. They were all delicious, fresh, and full of meat. However, the pork taco was slightly better than both the steak and the chicken tacos. If you are ever in South San Francisco, or anywhere nearby, you should definitely make the trip. PS. Order their horchata, too. Especially if you are going to add some of their salsa to your tacos!
