I've been a patient at Los Olivos Dentistry for years because it's close to home. Overall, Dr. Kevin Su and RDH Shyla have been professional and trustworthy, which is why we kept coming back. However, our recent experiences have been very concerning since a new dentist, Tara Norouzi, joined. First, both my wife and I specifically scheduled appointments with Dr. Su, but without prior notice, our exams were handled by Dr. Norouzi instead. We were not informed or given a choice, which felt inappropriate. Second, my wife had a troubling experience last year. After learning she had prior Invisalign treatment, Dr. Norouzi strongly insisted that her teeth were in very poor condition and recommended crowns, dismissing her request for conservative treatment. She was told that without crowns, her entire dentition could deteriorate. Concerned, she sought a second opinion overseas at a top dental hospital, where doctors determined it was a minor issue treatable with medication. The problem resolved quickly at minimal cost. More recently, I experienced something similar. I went in for sensitivity in a molar that had previously been filled. Despite explaining clearly that the tooth was sensitive to temperature and pressure, I felt my input was not fully understood. Based on testing, Dr. Norouzi concluded that the tooth nerve was "dead" and recommended extraction and a crown, which seemed inconsistent with my symptoms. When I asked about more conservative options like a filling, those were dismissed, and I felt pressured toward more aggressive treatment. The communication was tense and not patient-centered. After these experiences, I've decided to cancel my future appointments. I strongly recommend patients seek a second opinion before proceeding with major dental work. read more

Dr. Su, Dr. Balshe, and assistant Nhi are all incredibly attentive, kind, and competent. I've moved around a lot and had many different dentists and dental hygienists, and I was blown away by the experiences I have here. I was very nervous for a fairly minor procedure, and Nhi and Dr. Balshe went out of their way to be comforting, empathetic, and tell stories to distract me during the procedure. As many other reviewers have mentioned, Dr. Su is also incredibly compassionate and detail-oriented. I always feel like I'm in good hands when I get a checkup. I have already referred several people to this place, and I will keep doing so whenever I get the chance. It is a little pricier than other places I've been to, but this is definitely a case where you get what you pay for. read more

I was having lunch in the shopping center and realized there was a dental office next door so I walked in and they were able to take my appointment same day. I had a few of those old silver fillings that didn't look good so I upgraded to the natural looking ones. I've always been embarrassed by the tartar on my teeth. I didn't think it could come off, but the hygienist Tina made me look brand new. She made me feel so comfortable. I appreciate her taking the time to show me how to use an electric toothbrush and the waterpik I just purchased. I will be sure to go to the dentist more often. read more

The dentist herself was fine and explained the procedure clearly. Unfortunately, that's where the professionalism ended. After my appointment, I was made to wait over an hour just to receive a simple cost estimate for the procedure I came in for. Eventually, I was told their system "wasn't working" and that the estimate would be emailed to me later. It never was. I then had to call FOUR separate times just to follow up again to get a an estimate so I can choose between two options and schedule my next appointment and I NEVER received anything. I pay for this service. I showed up on time. Why does my time seem to mean absolutely nothing to this office? Why do I have to chase you repeatedly over something so basic, only to still end up with nothing? Disorganized, dismissive, and a complete waste of time. I won't be returning, and I wouldn't recommend this office to anyone who values basic communication and respect. read more

PLEASE DO NOT GO HERE AND FIND A BETTER DENTIST My fiance had his crown fall out and needed emergency dental work. We are new to the area and just needed to get it done and Los Olivos had next day availability. It's close to home and they seemed super helpful on the phone. I really wish we looked at Yelp and Google reviews before moving forward because it all went downhill from there. He ended up doing a deep cleaning, root canal, and the crown. Afterwards, they told him he needed to remove his wisdom teeth just because. His previous dentist advised him that it was unnecessary and that's why he never got them removed. They also told him he has gum disease, but he doesn't have any of the symptoms (so weird, right?). Anyways, he pays them this egregious amount for services rendered. I've never seen anything like it. We then received the EOB from his insurance carrier to find out that they overcharged him by $600. I called the insurance carrier immediately and they confirmed that the providers have to pay the negotiated rates that they have with them. This is done through billing codes so they can give you a close to accurate estimate. Once it goes through the billing process with the insurance carrier and it's been determined that there is an outstanding amount, you will receive a bill and an EOB which explains it. I called to try to understand how Los Olivos bills their patients and the benefits coordinator just said "it's confusing". This was after me calling several times and being told that "she's on lunch and will call right when she gets back." No, I had to call several times after to finally get her (in which, I did not receive the call I was waiting for). She let me know that she will call the insurance carrier and will review the EOB to process our refund. She informed me that they also receive the EOB, but why did I have to catch this and call for something to be done? I truly believe we wouldn't have received a refund if nothing was said. It's also funny because we received the EOB a bit ago. I am so upset. Furious even. Los Olivos Dentistry operates in a shady manner, with suspicious and deceptive billing practices. It's borderline FRAUDULENT with signs of unethical conduct. From what I've gathered in other reviews, they seem to be charging patients and insurance carriers as much as possible to pay off their equipment. read more

Be careful of HMO scam dental offices like this one. Unfortunately was placed into this office under my new insurance. I am a good dental visitor (every 6 months) and haven't had a cavity or anything over the last decade with my previous dentist. Right after getting X-rays, Kevin Su (refuse to call him a doctor) immediately said I needed a filling and an inlay b/c I had a "tooth fracture" without even thoroughly examining my mouth. They tried to get me to do and pay for this immediately. Odd that they would push for an expensive procedure even though I have zero pain currently or any discomfort at all. I went ahead and called my previous dentist (who have my previous X-Rays). They were immediately raising red flags. All this to say, very shady business and not in the best interests of the customer. This experience was bad enough to make me switch immediately back to PPO. read more

Be careful when getting services outside of the normal routine dentistry. I recently got a crown. I paid for my patient portion upfront. Being from an insurance billing background, wasn't comfortable for me, but most of the staff is friendly and the Dentist is a great guy, so I did it. Months later I got my EOB and wondered why my patient portion was $546 less than what I was charged. When I called it was explained to me that there was special material they use for my crown that does not get billed to insurance and is patient portion. This was not discussed with me prior to my treatment. Ellie didn't even explain to me why special material is needed or why they use it. Nor was it explained at the time. In this economy, I cannot afford to pay an extra $500 when the normal material would've been just fine. Needless to say I have fired them. It's unfortunate because the dentist is a really good dentist and the office staff aside from the x-ray tech is pleasant to deal with. read more

I decided to give Los Olivos Dentistry a try for me and my husband, even after reading some negative reviews about their cleanings. Unfortunately, my experience matched what others had said. I was referred to two different specialists, each giving completely opposite treatment recommendations. Our insurance was billed at a higher rate, and we still ended up paying over $1,000 out of pocket. Later, I went to another dentist for a second opinion and was shocked to find out how poorly my cleaning had been done -- there was still a lot of tartar left on my teeth. When I asked Los Olivos for a copy of my scans and X-rays, they said it would cost another $200. I brought my concerns to the doctor Kevin Su hoping he'd take responsibility or improve their services, but nothing changed. Given my medical condition, the least they could have done was release my scans without extra charges. This doesn't feel like patient care -- it feels like a money grab. We recently moved to Irvine and switched from PPO to HMO insurance and wow what a difference it has made! From 20+ years of healthy teeth and regular care to now being told I have a bunch of issues all of a sudden. The reviews are spot on! I met with Dr Tara, who when she first looked at my x ray very confidently said I am grinding my teeth. I sat up shocked as I have never in my life. Then she looked into my mouth and totally changed her tune saying it wasn't that bad. But that I need deep cleaning without much explanation. Then comes the admin and forcibly signs me up for deep cleaning costing $700!! After firmly declining the deep clean I finally received basic clean (90 minutes into the appointment !) and even this was sub par. The hygienist left a bunch of fluoride in my mouth that was super sticky and uncomfortable. I have had fluoride at every appointment in the past but never with so much discomfort. read more

Please read the reviews before coming here. I know it's close to home and seems convenient, but it's not worth it. They upcharge for almost everything and pressure you into additional services. Every visit we've had to pay extra out of pocket for things insurance doesn't cover. Management is unresponsive and never follows up with concerns. read more

Be aware. They charge something that dental insurance does not cover, a $88 hygiene instruction, just to get you pay more. Also they charge you a topical fluoride each time, which turned out is also not covered and only covers for 18 years old and below. How sneaky. Also my recent teeth cleaning is awful the lady is like a sales person keeps selling me a laser cleaning for my teeth. Super uncomfortable. read more

Then Dr Su later called to reinforce the deep cleaning, contradicting my expressed desire for a standard cleaning. The substantial cost, exceeding $2000, further solidified my decision to decline. I reiterated my request for a regular cleaning only this because I don't have the budget. Just because I chose not to do deep cleaning, they were not very helpful and welcoming to me for regular teen cleaning. The office was very clean and I liked how they helped me with my insurance cause I was having difficulty with it. I haven't had a cleaning in a while so I ended up needed a deep cleaning. Which did make sense cause I always had my gums bleeding when brushing and flossing. I saw my x rays and there was little spikes next to my teeth and they told me that was all the plaque that has been stuck under my gums. Now I feel a lot better. read more

BEWARE! My first appointment they tried to convince me that I need deep cleaning which would cost about $500 out of pocket. They've hired an ex-sales rep to do this. The second appointment I showed up to only be informed that they no longer accept my insurance and I will need to pay cash for cleaning. Their receptionist Niki was unapologetic and lied "I called you yesterday about it." There were no voicemails and emails about insurance from their office. The only ones that I've received were to tell me to confirm my appointment time and submit the patient intakes. Basically they want your money and will do shady things to get it. Please take your time and teeth somewhere else that is professional and actually cares about their patients. This place just isn't it. read more
