Located in that seedy drug homeless strip mall DIRECTLY next to a liquor store, it felt uncomfortable parking my Lexus there... The restaurant was a good size with lots of seating and it didn't feel tight. Thankfully the TV wasn't blaring nor was there any music. The walk-in first impression isn't great, some younger girl watching but ZERO hello, welcome or anything. I initiated everything... no smile, her voice barely audible, that early chance to connect was entirely missed. At her direction I sat and immediately the menu was placed on the table and she asked me, "Are you ready to order?" Lol How robotic and disconnected! It was my FIRST time here. I asked for just water, no ice, straw or lemon, as usual and a HUGE glass of water filled to the BRIM was brought out. Zero awareness about a needless spill hazard from being filled too high, an uneven table bump lap dump or even having to manage walking it to the table as she herself had to contort just to not spill it. The only thing I want filled that high is a bowl of country GRAVY! But water??? Come on! THINK! The chips and small container of beans with cheese brought to the table was tasty and unique. I appreciated that it was NOT too salty, loved the simplicity/flavors. I DID order the ck tamale which I thought was special, however it was mostly masa and the ck inside was sparse and not very flavorful. What's different is also the texture of the masa which I assume was ground much finer. I liked that it came with a small lime slice. That really made it more enjoyable. Despite being mostly masa, I loved the more subtle flavor, the texture the fact that it was in a some type of plant leaf. Def would get again. The chiliques were most YUMMY and different than I'd had elsewhere. Despite the totally soggy chips and the overcooked eggs, it was delicious and also had some rice mixed with some peas. In total, a nicely filling meal despite looking smaller once it hit the table. I'd def order this again, and AGAIN! Despite all the misses with the first impression and front help, the restaurant was really clean and the food was delicious. There's ample room for even a group and you CAN actually hold a conversation without being BLARED out by overhyped music or an obnoxious TV! I'd have given more stars had the lower level expectations been met. To the staff of the restaurant, keep improving and becoming more professional in establishing BETTER 'First Impressions' with the public. Show some effort as it's low hanging fruit.
