Hubby and I decided to try Cocina Familia Mendoza at Ashlan and Cedar, right next to Savemart. We went on Saturday. We got 2 of their daily specials, the chorizo bean dip and the bean tostada. We also got a shrimp taco and carnitas quesadilla. Everything was fresh and delicious including the salsas. Today we saw a post for an extra special, 16 ounce pozole verde for $5. I know it's 100°, but couldn't pass trying it. We also got a chile verde burrito. Both were very good and the pozole was an unbelievable deal. And yes, it came with all the fixings for that price. We talked to one of the owners both times. He was very friendly and recognized us immediately when we walked in today. It's a small business I'd recommend giving a try. read more

Everything I've tried is average. Not terrible but not the best I've had. The service is always on point and it's so easy to just come in eat and leave- it's speedy and never packed the times I have gone. The Chips are Casera style so very thick and crunchy. They accompany them with a small bowl of beans which is a nice touch. Their table salsa is mild so I can stomach it. I've tried the pollo ala plancha (grilled chicken plate) fajitas, sopes and Camerones al mojo de ajo ( garlic shrimp). The best for me was the asada sope. The rest were on the bland side. Just OK. Came here because of the great reviews on Yelp! Came in on a Sunday for dinner and we were the only party in there. The vibe was very nice. Super clean. Our waitress was SO NICE and food came out fairly quickly. The meal comes with complimentary chips and salsa and refried beans. Pretty tasty appetizer considering it was free. However, my main entree wasn't as good as I was hoping. I got their 3 taco combo and opted for pastor for my meat. It was mid! The presentation was nice. The meat was a bit too salty for my liking and I thought the rice and beans were just OK. If you want good tacos, I'd suggest going to a taco truck or a different spot. I ordered the 2 item combo (enchilada & a crunchy taco). The enchilada was good, but it was very small. The crunchy taco was actually smaller than a Taco Bell one. The rice was a solid 0/10. I'm baffled because I didn't think screwing up rice was possible. If you are a cumin fan, then this rice is just for you! Absolute overkill. The beans were fire though, not gonna lie. The service was okay. There were only 2 other people eating inside and they still never really checked on us or offered to go boxes when we were clearly done. My new favorite Mexican restaurant! The food is fantastic. So many places serve Tex-Mex, but this is so much better. Finally, a restaurant that uses spices and seasonings! On the second stop today of our michelada taco tour, we visited Cocina Village. We sat outside on the patio. I really enjoyed their micheladas. It was very light and had a tangy lime flavor. The mini tacos were okay. It was $7.99 for 3 mini tacos. I ordered the shredded beef and the shredded chicken. The shredded beef was a little dry. The shredded chicken didn't have a whole ton of flavor, but it was good. The chips and salsa are good and the michelada was good. The bathroom is clean and ambiance is cute. read more

Also, they up charged us for the burrito as well! I asked for the burrito that's wet and they charged me $2 for both burritos without mentioning it. Which it took a long time to get the server. I would say that they used 1-2 teaspoons of the avocado. Which the server said it's because there is a shortage of avocados. Our party of 2 walked in at about 7:00 pm on a Saturday evening. There was only one other table with customers so it was pretty much a guarantee that we would not be forgotten about. We ordered a beer and I got a glass of Chardonnay (thanks for the recommendation Nicola). They immediately served us warmed chips with salsa and refried beans. The refried beans were a nice touch since most Mexican restaurants do not provide them. We ordered a chile verde plate and a chile verde wet burrito. I personally got the plate since I follow a Keto/low carb diet and I intended on eating the meat only. It came with rice and beans and a few flour tortillas. I took about 2 bites of the rice just to taste and it was on point as far as seasoning and texture goes. The beans had good flavor with a little bit of kick to them. The chile verde was delicious. It had great flavor, bite size chunks and it was moist. My dude had the wet burrito. He was starving and felt that it was more than satisfying. The wet burrito had beans, rice, cheese and sour cream inside. The service was wonderful. We really could not have asked for a better experience. The waitress and another waiter tended to us and constantly checked in with us to see that everything was fine. The last 15 min of our stay lead to a larger party entering and another large family. It was getting progressively busy but still our service was great. The value for the meal was outstanding. We both agreed we would come back. Wow! This place is BEYOND AMAZING! I've been wanting to try this place and so glad we did. Went on a Thursday evening around 6pm it's a small cute open space, very clean and I love the interior design they had the a Christmas theme going right now and it fits right in and I love the Christmas songs that was playing it had a Spanish twist to it it was beautiful. I like the layout of the menu it's beautiful and organized and so many options to choose from. We came in and was greeted by our server Alex, he was very nice and we were told he could sit where ever we wanted. He brought us the complimentary chips and salsa as well as a bean dip. All very good, the tortilla chips were thick and very good. The salsa had a good spice to it and I loved how they included the bean dip not many places give complimentary bean dip. We also got a corona michelada, it was DELICIOUS!!! They actually had peppers in there. The only disappointment I had with this drink was... it wasn't filled to the rim! My bf and I agreed it was really good. My bf ordered the posole it was so full of flavor the meat was cooked perfectly and the flour tortillas was hot, fresh and perfect. I ordered the 2 combo plate. I chose the sope and enchilada both in carne asada. The food was perfect no complaints. They meat was cooked well and very good. The rice was delicious as well as the beans. For dessert we tried the chocoflan. The chocolate cake was moist, the flan was good but I wish it could have been alittle sweeter, the strawberry topping definitely complimented the chocolate. Wow I've missed out all this time?! Always saw it, but never thought about coming here. Husband was craving for a burrito and said let's go here. I got the 5 asada tacos and I'll have to say they know how to cook their asada! These are the best asada tacos I've ever had. The meat is so flavorful. Cooked perfectly, not overly dry. It had salsa already in it, onions and cilantro. On the side they give you some grilled onions you can put on your tacos. Delicious! My husband got the wet burrito, and he enjoyed it. Great size and very filling. Great sauce on the outside and topped with melted cheese on top. The co worker got the cocina burrito and it was a win for him. He loved the burrito. He's a pretty big guy and that burrito was enough for him. He said he will be coming back. We both ordered horchata and it was great! Refreshing for this hot weather! I've only been here twice, but it's my new favorite restaurant. I frequent this area so I saw it being built before it opened. I honestly did not expect much until I saw photos and heard it was good from word of mouth of people I trust. This is a family owned business and it definitely has all the charm and friendly service of one. On my first visit a very large group eating dinner and our waiter encouraged us to put in our food order ASAP so we wouldn't have an extended wait for our food which I found thoughtful. I love their chips and bean dip! Not all tortilla chips are created equal and all restaurants do them differently, but they have some of my favorite ever. They are on the thicker side, but by no means more difficult to eat or heavy feeling. Just perfectly fried. I think the thicker tortilla chips pair perfectly with the accompanying bean dip. On both visits I ordered the Chicken Molcajete because it's just that good. I really do need to try something else though because everything I've seen brought out looks delicious. Their Molcajetes are truly a special dining experience. Unless you're super hungry, you'll get two meals out of it if you don't wind up sharing it. I was told by our waiter that it's even better the next day as leftovers. A molcajete is basically a stone mortar and pestle without the pestle. It is heated up to either 400 or 500 degress (I forget what our waiter told us) and then packed with rice and beans and for my lack of better words, other flavorings. It's served with tortillas and comes out bubbling so careful not to burn yourself! Definitely ask for a little plate to scoop some on to cool down because you'll want to dig in as soon as possible, but not burn your mouth. read more

The ambiance of this restaurant is relaxing. It's very clean and quaint. You feel as though you're sitting on a patio nestled in between some bright spanish villas. Chips, salsa, bean dip with cheese is served as you wait. The service was quick and attentive. I had a combo with a taco and sopa. If you like crunchy tacos they fry the shredded meat inside the shell which makes it very crunchy! No soggy tacos here! Yay!! The sopa Al Pastor was spectacular! Tender and flavorful; an absolute TRY! I did try on my servers recommendation. The beans and rice were good but I really want to give it a few more tries before I formulate a strong opinion. We have come here multiple time since we enjoy the food but after today I will not be returning due to the owner. It is not family friendly. I needed to quickly change my 4 month olds diaper and I asked if they had changing table and I was told no. They had just opened and no other customers were in the restaurant. I decided to just change him using the booth seating. Once I paid the server told me "the owner said you changing the baby here was unacceptable." As a restaurant owner you should do your best to accommodate to families as well. It upset me as well because she could have told me herself instead of standing at the kitchen and sending the server who obviously looked embarrassed relaying the message. What a treat Cocina Village is. First of all, the chips are exceptional and they come with beans on the side. Nice touch! I ordered the Molcajete, something I never had before, and I eat a lot of Mexican food. It was delicious- a steaming hot stew of meat, peppers, avocado, cheese and more. My wife ordered Sopes, (al pastor and carnitas- she preferred the al pastor) her go-to Mexican dish. They were fantastic. Cocina Village is one of the places I've missed most during the pandemic. It's a good distance from where I live, and it's too far for delivery, so I hadn't made the trip out there to get takeout. But that chocolate cake was calling my name, so it was high time I just bit the bullet and made the 40-minute round trip. Takeout is really easy, they use the Toast app which has the full (extensive!) menu and every extra option you could possibly think of. My husband and I were both in the mood for cheese enchiladas - I got green sauce, he got red. I also added one chile relleno on the side, which I think I'll do every visit now. I can never decide between enchiladas and rellenos (and yes, I know you can get a combo plate, but por qué no los dos???). We also got a taquito appetizer and, of course, two slices of that famous chocolate cake. The order site said it'd take about 15 minutes, so I ordered right as we were walking out the door. They were quick though, and I got a text saying it was ready after 7 minutes, so I wish I'd prepped my order and sent it from the car. Note for next time! On arrival one of the waiters was there to greet me, he pointed out my food bags and stepped away so I could grab them. Everything was packaged nicely and it travelled better than I anticipated. They included chips and salsa like they would for dine-in, which I appreciate. The enchilada plates were really well presented, I love that they put some sour cream, queso fresco and pico on top. Makes the whole dish nice and light. Their green sauce has a really good level of heat, enough to feel spicy but it doesn't build beyond my tolerance or slow me down. The rice and beans were the same as I remember them being for dine in, too. The relleno also travelled well, and the ratio of all the ingredients was perfect. Of course the star of the show is still the chocolate cake, which is rich and delicious. I only wish I wasn't already full every time I ate it! I was really pleased with how the take-out went here and urge you to pay them a visit! They'll be the first place on my list when things reopen, and I'll probably make the takeout round-trip again soon, now that I know it's worth it. read more

With good Mexican food available on nearly every block, it's hard to find one that stands out from the rest. Cocina Village is that one. The cashier was extremely friendly and helpful. The food is flavorful, filling, and comes in generous portions. It's not the cheapest place, but it's not gonna break your bank and you won't regret the money you spent. What I really appreciated is that the salsa that comes with the complimentary chips and salsa actually has a bit of a kick.
