Ofelias Cocina next door to her barbershop. A place where everyone knows your name.
    Alice W.

What a fantastic surprise. We were driving back from Sutter Creek, yelping for a lunch spot. Ofelias popped up. First, don't use Apple nav to get here. Took us on a roundabout direction. The area is tired. The restaurant shares space with Ofelia and Sons barber Shop on one side Central Fish market on the other. We walked in. Ed, a regular was having his usual of grilled fish and veges "He's on a special diet" said our waiter...who turned out to be Ofelia herself. I asked for her suggestion, something with veges "Ed, how do you like yours?" "It's good!" Ed also shared that Ofelia cuts his hair. "I was just sitting on my chair and she cuts my hair". He smiled at her and she teased back. She placed fresh pico de Gallo down and homemade chips. Could have made a meal out of those. The pico is fresh with just the right amount of acidity. I ordered fish tacos at Ofelias recommendation and I added a cup of albondigas soup. The soup came beautifully presented with the veges draped over the meatballs. One sip of the broth. OH MAH GAHD. Rich hearty flavorful broth. The meatballs have a touch of mint in them. I've eaten all over California and this was the best albondigas soup I've ever had. Seriously wonderful. The fish tacos were amazing. Full fillets of white fish, crunchy cabbage and some chipotle sauce with just a bit of the before mentioned pico de Gallo. Again, perfect balance of creamy and acid. My hubby had the chicken quesadilla while my friends had a wet burrito and another order of those fish tacos. All loved their meals. While eating a young security guard came in to order a breakfast burrito. I listened to Ofelia ask about his new shift and work plans. It was like sitting in someone's kitchen listening to your mom or grandma catch up with your day. In a word-A treasure.

Not sure when it happened, but what used to be Ofelia's is now Esperanza's Cocina. The food tastes the same as the last time I was here. Had the adovada sopes with rice and beans. Hubby special ordered fish sopes which aren't on the menu. Still tasty as ever.

    Posole!

The food is really good here! Im not fluent in Spanish but the stuff was really helpful. Definitely try the Menudo and Posole!

    Wet burrito with carnitas!

What an amazing place! We're coming back from Sequoia National Park and decided to stop in Fresno for lunch. You wouldn't expect it, but the food here was probably the highlight of the trip. Walking in, it felt very homey and we were greeted with the owner of the restaurant. She was warm and welcoming and sat us down. Right away, we got chips and salsa. The chips tasted freshly made and had a spicy seasoning on them, and was accompanied by a fresh tomato and onion salsa. I got the wet burrito with carnitas and was amazed when it came out! It was huge! It was stuffed with rice, carnitas, and cabbage. They also brought out three different sauces: chipotle, hot sesame, and serrano. My friends got tacos and they looked delicious. All the items are under $10 and seems like the perfect place for a lunch. Tips - Don't get the beans and rice on the side if you get a wet burrito, it's already a ton of food without it. Pros - Warm and inviting hole in the wall restaurant. Taste of homemade Mexican food. Free chips and salsa. The horchata here was just sweet enough! Cons - Don't come here if you are in a rush! The iced coffee here is super sweet

Lovingly made and delicious pork tamale!

Excellent food here, all made in-house with love. I ordered a #7 combo here with a pork tamale and an extra taco a la carte. A basket of fresh fried chips and salsa was served without asking. The salsa was little cubed pieces of onion, tomato, cilantro and jalapeno without a tomato sauce backbone. It was delicious and seasoned perfectly. A lot of Mexican places totally oversalt everything without paying careful attention. Not here! Ofelia herself served me and brought these items out with perfect time, letting me eat one and then bringing another. The fresh corn tortilla was apparent in it's taste and texture. What a nice touch. The chili relleno that comes with the combo is actually a soup! It's the normal chili relleno but in a flavorful broth full of green peppers and onions. It was a delicious and unexpected change from anything I've had in the past. The sauces here are all made in-house and that includes the bottled red and green sauces in squirt bottles. The red sauce used on my chicken enchilada was so good. It had a deep and subtle complexity that was flavorful without overdoing it. The green sauce on the tamale likewise was fresh, bright and dimensional. Always one to beat the rush, I arrived downtown to the China district at 10:45 AM. Parking was a breeze and I had all the elbow room I wanted. In way of encouragement to you, Ofelia, I noticed and appreciated the skill and love that shines through your food and service. Please pass this along to your staff! -G

One of the best Mexican restaurants I have ever been to. From the outside it's just a little hole in the wall, but as always it has the best food. I ordered an asada wet burrito. It had the perfect amount of spice and hit the spot. I also ordered a horchata and it had the perfect amount of sweetness. They also provided large amounts of chips and salsa while we waited for our food. The chips and salsa were both home made and they were DELICIOUS. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone in the Fresno area.

Amazing food!!! First time here and will be back! Pozole was yummy with plenty of meat and hominy! Came with all the fixings!

This might be my new go-to spot! We were greeted right away by Ofelia's herself who proceeded to wait on us. She was very sweet and down to earth!! Had a great attitude which alone will impress anyone! There were lots of options and everything was well priced! I got the pozole and the hubs had a tamale, lengua torta, and 2 tacos (lengua and carnitas). I tasted his and OMG...loved everything! Carnitas were quite tasty and he enjoyed the lengua a lot! The tamale was delicious and had lots of good flavors! Pozole was delicious and had plenty of meat and hominy. No big fatty pieces and definitely hearty sized bowl! Had tortillas and chips on the side too! Can't wait to be back for the molè and enchiladas!! If your in Fresno...try it! You won't regret!

This place is officially bookmarked for every future drive through Fresno!…read more The lengua and chicharrón tacos were honestly some of the best I've ever had. I also sampled the carnitas on top of crispy taco shells as well. The meat was incredibly tender, juicy, and packed with flavor, and the tortillas came out hot, fresh, and perfectly cooked. Every bite reminded me why simple food done right is hard to beat. I was hoping to try the mojara frita, menudo, and barbacoa, only to find out the menudo and barbacoa are weekend only specialties. Needless to say, I was pretty disappointed, but it also gives me a great reason to come back. What really stood out, beyond the food, was the hospitality. David, who appears to have been running the place for over 20 years, was incredibly charismatic and provided the kind of customer service that seems harder and harder to find these days. You can tell he genuinely cares about both the restaurant and the people who walk through the door. One of my favorite parts of the visit was when I saw the owner come out and greet the regulars and customers. The interactions felt sincere and heartfelt, not forced. There was a real sense of community here, as if customers weren't just patrons but part of an extended family. That kind of atmosphere is special and says a lot about the people behind the business. Great food, warm hospitality, and a welcoming environment--I'll definitely be back, hopefully on a weekend next time.

I don't think I've ever felt betrayed by Yelp reviews...until now…read more During a recent road trip we stopped here to picked up some lunch/dinner because tacos are quick and easy and their Yelp rating is high. Location/services: Upon entering the building I immediately noticed the heat. It was a hot 98 degree day and the restaurant felt like an oven and was maybe 3-5 degree cooler than it was outside. I then quickly noticed this was a very simple operation (almost like a food truck), and not much to the menu, but there were folks sitting and eating and a few others waiting to order, so I assumed the food must be great. We ordered 4 meals (tacos with rice/beans) which was meant to be eaten there but after waiting in line and feeling like we were in a hot box, we decided to make it to go. We sat and waited for our food (about 20 mins), we chatted and observed our surroundings and it became very apparent the restaurant was not maintained with basic cleaning because it was very grimy and just plain dirty. I then used the restroom and it was absolutely disgusting. Our ordered was called and the staff was very nice. The food: As I mentioned, we got 4 orders of tacos (all carne asada) with rice/beans, and we asked for salsa and limes. We got grilled jalapenos, lemons and one sandwhich baggy filled with red salsa. Not a big deal. The meat was fine but the tortillas were inedible. They were tough, flavorless, and greasy. The bean and rice were ok. We ate enough to curb our hunger but none of us finish our food. Upon my best judgement, I had convinced myself that the food was gonna be great because their Yelp rating told me so. I was so wrong! One last note, there was nothing here that resembled a bakery/panaderia. So if you think you could also grab a treat here, you are wrong.

What could have been a disappointing surprise turned into one of the best local dining experiences we've had in a long time. We had the pleasure of meeting Miguel himself, and his hospitality immediately stood out. He took the time to introduce us to several items on the menu and encouraged us to try a little bit of everything. I'm glad he did. The red beans and rice were absolutely phenomenal, and every single thing we tasted was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with pride. You can tell Miguel genuinely cares about both the food and the people he serves. What impressed me most wasn't just the food--it was the atmosphere. Miguel has a gift for making you feel welcome. His heart for hospitality is second to none, and it's obvious that serving great food and creating a great experience are his top priorities. If you're looking for a hidden gem in Clovis, this is it. Whether you're stopping in to catch a game, grab a meal with friends, or enjoy a simple flip-flop date night with your spouse, Miguel's is worth the visit. We'll definitely be back, and I can't recommend this place enough.

Miguel sells his auntenthic mexican food and Lisa sells her favorite sweet treats. By far on the market, they sell pretty bomb salsa! It's not like the generic salsa from store bought one, it's just like the unique homemade family recipes. And trust me, these are not as supper vinegary. I love Miguel's salsa! Miguel's message was to serve his community and bring his tradition to the table. He brought the flavors of Michoacan and Jalisco Mexico which were passed down from the Segura family. SERVICE :: I love Miguel's service! He personally serves you and greet you there. He offered me free chips and salsa while i wait. They were quiet busy but get things done quickly too. RATE : 5/5 SALSAS & CHIPS - COMPLIMENTARY:: His salsas and chips were the best thing I've ever recieved. He serves his famous red and green salsa with a little bit of ground beef on top. They go so well together. RATE : 5/5 RED SALSA :: It's hard to describe it here but it's roasty burnt salsa full of flavors. Not too vinegary. You just got to try it in person. RATE : 5/5 GREEN SALSA :: I personally love the green sauce more, in general. And still Miguel's green salsa still beats the red salsa. I can taste all of the greens and fruit in it. It may be advertised mild but the heat is there. It's about almost the same spice level as the red salsa. RATE : 5/5 ASADA TACO ($3.49) :: Besides his salsa, his tacos were amazing too. It's well seasoned, unique, and full of flavor. The asada is something that I've never tasted before. It's very herby, well seasoned to taste, juicy and tender! RATE : 5/5 TACOS DORADOS ($4.49) :: The tacos dorados were something different from what I've had before and were absolutely delicious. This taco reminds me of birria. The texture and flavor were also amazing. I asked for pork, it was supper moist, tender and juicy full of flavors. The cotija cheese brings a nice dry and light cheesy taste to it. And lastly, those pickled jalapeno just give a pop of juicy, sour, and spicy flavor. RATE : 5/5 PISTACHIO CREAMES ICED MATCHA (16oz - 6.49) :: Lisa use Tenzo brand. I've used and tried Tenzo before and it's hard to ratio the matcha. Over portion Tenzo match will be too bitter and too little too diluted. And yes, Lisa's Matcha was on the diluted side. The pistachio flavoring is light and taste artificial. The sweetness level is perfectly sweetend. Not too sweet. RATE : 2/5 NOTE : Spend anything above $50, get a $5 dollar off voucher for the next purchase. OVERALL :: Overall, it's a hidden gem that's definitely worth checking out! Don't forget his salsas, he do sell them on the side. I'll definitely go back for more and try his other menu!
