Center Street Social, oh how I want to love you. So many good things going for it: looks great inside, great beer list, friendly folks working there. The food just never seems to deliver. They have some exciting menu options from chicken and waffles to delicious sounding black and blue burger. I've been here for lunch several times now and tried a range of options from the menu. Each time the food disappointed. Nothing bad, just nothing popping either. I'll still come for the beer, but will stick to a salad with blackened chicken - on the pricey side but they do this one pretty well. I should mention they put together an amazing cold spicy melon soup last year for a nearby festival. It was amazing. I looked forward to ordering it, but the price was outrageous (I can't recall exactly how much). read more

Ok, it was really loud in there and service, although very friendly, was spotty. Bartenders/servers seemed more interested in messing around with each other as opposed to taking care of customers. First of all they sat me on a tall bar stool with all off the supports broken, if I had fallen... I cant even tell you how mad and embarrassed I would of been. The server could honestly care less and didnt even get me another stool. The apps were ok but the boneless wings were more like micro nuggets! Usually, everything here is outstanding! It's a great place to hang out, and the food is usually EXCELLENT. However, some of us went out to happy hour last night, and some of us got food poisoning later that night and this morning. This is extremely disappointing and we have never had this problem before. We were in the area around lunch time and came here on a Sunday. The decor is very well done, and we really liked the look of the reclaimed barn wood. The menu had some interesting selections (drinks and food), so we did a small sampling and took advantage of the $15 brunch bottomless mimosas. We tried the beet salad, Thai chicken lettuce wraps, chicken & waffles, sweet potato fries and the kid's cheeseburger. Everything was fresh and flavorful. The Thai lettuce wraps were good, but pretty salty. I think that's to be expected with a soy and peanut sauce though. If you eat the chicken & waffles like a sandwich, then expect the waffles to come apart in your hands. Not a big deal, just a little messy. A cool concept, but difficult to execute as a sandwich I guess. The friend chicken was a little dry, but fried chicken can get that way. I enjoyed the overall flavor - the coleslaw was especially good!! In addition to the flavor, I think the slaw may have helped offset the slight dryness that you get with fried chicken sometimes. I found the maple bourbon syrup a little too thin, but it did add a great sweet flavor to the saltiness of the chicken. Despite my little nits, it's definitely worth a try. Our servers were all very friendly, polite and prompt. This is huge in my book. The only negative I can think of would be the margarita mix. The mix can either make or break a margarita - If you want to serve a decent marg, then please get a better mix. Other than that, keep up the great work. I moved to CT with my husband a few years ago from San Diego and we were so used to crafty, from scratch, cool concept restaurants and bars. When we moved here we didn't really find many said places. All we could find were diners and other uniteresting places to go eat at. Finally during the winter we discovered this gem hidden away in the small town of Shelton..which was 2 towns over from us. We have been here quite a few times since and have enjoyed each visit more and more. Brunch is awesome! How can someone not love bottomless bloody Mary's, mimosas and belinis for $15! I'm really picky about my bloody Mary's and theirs is AMAZING, tastes like a housemade mix that has the perfect spice and kick to it. The cannoli French toast...holy crap!..Just order it. The lobster bennies were pretty good, but I was expecting a little more lobster meat. Their dinner menu is also good. I've had a few items off of the dinner menu and but my absolute favorite is the lobster Mac and cheese. It's a small meal but it'll fill ya up! Worst. Experience. Ever. Decided to come here on a Sunday for brunch with a group of friends. We called ahead to make a reservation for noon and the gentleman on the phone said it was a great idea, seeing that they're expecting to be busy because there will be a DJ. The last guest in our party arrived at about 12:20. It was decently busy, we looked around to see what other tables were eating/drinking to try and get an idea of what we wanted ourselves. We ended up each decided to get a bottomless mimosa, which is $17/guest - a great deal to me! We got an appetizer and our meals and were enjoying our time when it was progressively getting busier. Our server was coming over every few minutes now to ask "still good?" "Need anything else?" And ultimately rushing us. We said amongst ourselves that there was 4 other tables that were here well before we even sat down, so why were we being rushed? Our server then came back to tell us our 1.5 hour reservation was over and dropped off our bill. It was not EVER stated that brunch was 1.5 hours - not over the phone when we made the reservation, not when we sat down, not on the website, nor on the signs advertising brunch and bottomless mimosas. We questioned why other tables were here longer than us and still being served, to which our server replied that they weren't and she has "other things to do." The owner came over, was equally as rude and defensive about us lying about other tables being here longer to us, to which we replied we had a photo we took of ourselves when we sat down, time stamped, and they were in the background already eating. We also said that we never would have opted for the bottomless mimosas, seeing as we were being asked to leave after each of our guests in the party had 2 mimosas. She quickly changed her mind and said "maybe we can put you at a different table then." Already feeling so unwelcome and embarrassed, we paid our tab and left. I've been to Center Street Social a few different times so my review will be a summation of all of those experiences rather than just 1. My experiences include: happy hour, afternoon lunch and dinner time. (a brunch trip needs to be in my future) Overall Decor: The decor of the place is similar to the old mexican restaurant previously there. It has a good vibe overall. The bar area can be a bit small and crowded when a large group is there. One little note: It is cold in there. In the winter or on a cold day, the temperature inside isn't ideal. (i run cold so this might be just me) Food: The food options are extensive and everything I have sampled has tasted very good. It is typical bar menu/food but it doesn't disappoint. One thing I think they should note is if a dish contains 'nuts'. There are 2 dishes that might have peanuts in the sauces and no one at the place can answer if that is the case. Service: The service has been consistent. It isn't the best service but definitely not the worst. I have had 1 day where the service was awful but I think this was due to confusion on who 'owned' the table I was sitting at. Bad service!!! I come in frequently for happy hour. I'm amazed to see a nice, fully staffed bar but all of them end bunched up at the end of the bar talking. I waited almost an hour for a beer when there are not many customers. My order has been wrong serveral times, and they do not acknowledge it! The guy bartenders (Andy especially) mostly just drool over the female staff and customers and ignores the men. If I were management, some of these employees would be fired. Flat out. This is unacceptable! Should not have to wait that long for a beer at a slow bar. I got my wings almost 30 minutes after ordering and they weren't even my order! Danielle has always been stellar whichever days we come in! Props to her! The cook is dressed in a wife beater and shorts, very unprofessional! First time here since last summer. Came with a party of about 10 for a 5 pm dinner. Had to look for a server for cocktails, then had to wait a long time for the drinks to be prepared, begged to order apps, all of our dinners came out except one which arrived when we were done eating. No compensation for that. Waitress never came by to see if everything was alright. They were out of the chicken pot pie and could not locate the seagram's, though it was plainly on the shelf. The food was actually very good though the sides were not all hot enough. Could be a great place if they would train staff properly. Saw the bartender pour water into two separate handles of alcohol, then taste it to make sure it wasn't too watered down, she then proceeded to put it back on the shelf. Went here for brunch recently with a group of friends and was pleasantly surprised. We ordered breakfast tacos, lobster Benedict and an omelette all were prepared well and even though they were busy out orders were made relatively quickly. Lobster Benedict was loaded with huge chunks and claws of Lobster, and the hollandaise was not overwhelmingly covering everything. Staff was more than happy to make alterations to the omelette they offer on the menu. They offer bottomless mimosas, bellinis, and bloody Mary's with brunch but sometimes are a little slow on the refill. Overall, was a great, be sure to make a reservation they do have limited seating area. Be warned it is street parking but on a side street a block away there is a large lot you can park in for free. read more

As a regular at the old bar in this location, I was sad to see it close. However, Center Street Social provided a much needed classier bar in downtown Shelton. The renovation that was done is spectacular, the place has so much charm and is very welcoming. It's a great date spot or place to go with friends to catch up. The menu is the perfect size- giving you enough options without overwhelming you with choices. There are also some unique dishes, such as the chicken and waffles. Most of the food I have tried here I have been pleasantly surprised with. The chips with melted gorgonzola and bacon are delicious and great for sharing. The one item I would not order again was the lobster mac and cheese. Unless you had a piece of lobster with every bite it didn't have enough flavor. The drink menu is impressive, once again a lot of choices. However, my biggest complaint about this bar is that 75% of the time my drinks are far too strong- almost undrinkable. This has occurred with the lemonades, martinis and even just a simple vodka soda. Luckily, they have a good selection of beers so I now just stick to that. Overall, I do enjoy my visits to this new establishment. Being the priciest bar downtown, it may not be my go to every weekend, but when I'm ready to throw on my heels and have a good time with the girls, this is certainly where I will be. read more

Our second and last visit to CSS Good: Decor and Ambiance Menu is good with some interesting choices Prices are okay Not Good: Bad waiters, servers and bus boys: Some of the the staff was so bad it was almost comical. I actually felt bad for them. No smiles, unfriendly, and impatient. If we ever do go back, I'll remember to bring a flag to wave down the server who wanders aimlessly, dishes in hand, and ask each table if it's their order. The first time our order came out, one dinner was not what we ordered, so we sent it back. Even when she came out with the correct plate, she still wandered aimlessly with it. After our plates were cleared, she came over with new dishes asking if it was our food! Grabby bus boys may try to snatch your plates before you are done without asking. If someone sits at the table next to you, make sure you don't wind up with all of their food and drinks on your bill (yes, that happened). Our waiter said - "Sorry, I thought they were with you." Questionable kitchen staff - One of our party was in the bathroom when someone from the kitchen came in, did his thing, and walked out of the bathroom without washing his hands. Hepatitis A, anyone? Watered down liquor: When you order a shot of tequila, tell them to open a new bottle before your eyes or you're likely to get a watered down shot. Parking: You have to find a spot on a busy road and walk. Bottom line - this place has potential and seems like a popular place in downtown Shelton despite all of the above. Be aware of the watered down liquor and definitely do not expect a smiling, friendly, or efficient staff. read more

The company I work for (on the west coast) has a headquarters near here, so I'm not here often, but this is my second visit this year and it's been an excellent experience both times. The chicken and waffles was awesome, as was the Monstah Lobstah sandwich. There is a guy who has curated my beer experience (and that of my co-workers) both times I've come and he has been awesome and expanded my boundaries. This place is awful. Just awful. My little sister wanted my boyfriend and I to meet her here on a Sunday for brunch. My boyfriend and I walk in and stood there waiting, as no one greeted us. Several servers and the manager walked by and finally someone said hello and took our name, not on paper, just took our name and told us it would "be a couple minutes" as their tables were full. The bar was not, so we sat there while we waited for a table. The bartender was very short with us for waiting there even though 1/ there was nowhere else to wait and 2/ her bar had tons of other open seats. Let me say that I worked in restaurants for nearly ten years and have been a server, bartender, maître d' and spent several years in management. A restaurant should have SOMEONE designated to manage a waitlist on a brunch, manager or otherwise, and your bartender should never get snarky about guests waiting by the bar when there is literally nowhere else to wait (and there are other seats available should guests want them). Now, at this point I'm already a little irked. I wait, not for a few minutes, but for over twenty minutes while people walk in and various employees greet them and, without checking with each other, seat in a totally random fashion with no idea of who is waiting. I drew this to the manager's attention (he was totally lost, alternating between barking orders at his staff instead of managing them and bussing tables instead of orchestrating the flow of things). The manager gestures at literally the worst table in the place and tells us that's ours as soon as it's set. At this point, after watching how disorganized they are, I just wanted to get seated and eat. The menu looked good so I was hoping I could have a nice meal despite the bad service. Nope. Another group walks in before we can get seated and a well-meaning waitress goes to sit them at our table. At this point I speak up and stop her. We take the table, the manager yells at her even though it's his fault that he hasn't trained his staff in how to organize a waitlist. The waitress was sweet and efficient, though clearly hadn't been trained. She took our order but my coffee only got refilled once my entire meal (sitting empty most of the time). I ordered the lobster eggs benedict, which I was very excited to try. When the food finally came out, the portion was tiny, my "poached" eggs were cooked all the way through (a.k.a. hard-boiled), the hollandaise sauce was utterly flavorless, and so were the home fries, which LOOKED like they'd be delicious but were awful, and also cold. Knowing the restaurant industry well enough to know where the breakdowns were occurring causing such bad service and food, it just made me all the more angry to watch the manager rip on his staff instead of actually managing them. No wonder the place was a mess. To boot, an employee HIT MY BOYFRIEND IN THE HEAD WITH A CHAIR while rushing to configure another table setup. At the end of the meal the manager did a quick stop-by to ask how our meal was, seemingly oblivious, or willfully ignorant, of the ridiculously bad experience we just had. He asked how our food was. I bit my tongue because I was so livid with how bad the experience was. My boyfriend told the manager that it was "......okay. Just okay." To this, the manager shrugs it off and says, "well, you know brunch can get CRAZY and sometimes plate presentation suffers." Excuse me, what?!?!? Plate presentation?!? At this point it took everything in me not to rip this guy a new one. We said the food was bad, not the presentation. A good manager would have apologized instead of offering a bad excuse. He would have asked what specifically was wrong so that they could avoid that issue in the future. He would have apologized and offered to buy our coffee or something. He would have apologized for my boyfriend getting hit in the head with a chair (which he saw and should have apologized about immediately). He should have taken charge of the chaos the seating process (which made not just my group, but several groups miffed). And frankly, they were overstaffed with ill-trained but well-meaning staff. After several years in management, I know what an excuse is, I know what a badly-run restaurant is, and I know when a review really needs to be written. This place might be a fun bar at night, and it does have a nice décor inside, but I wanted it to be so much more than the train wreck that it was. Don't subject yourself to this place. I am disappointed to update my review down to 2 stars. While I think that Center Street does add something to Shelton, I also find that they seem to be trying to do too much. Since our first time there, we have been 2 other times when it is busy and I was not impressed by the service or the food. Plus, every beer on the menu we wanted to order they were out of. I have been here a few times. The service is horrible!!!!!!!! I was just there tonight and the hostess gave our table away to the people who came in behind us. So we confirmed if we were on the list and she said she had another table ready for us. Then we were seated in the corner and literally waited for 20 minutes..not 1 person came over! So we asked the people next to us if they had been helped and they said yes. We finally saw a human being and asked who our server was because we have been waiting forever and he said he had to check with the hostess. Really????? Another five minutes and we got up and left. Ok so sometimes after a long day, ya grab some take out, so you can eat some great food while you get comfy at home. That was the plan two times... I did take out here two different times, (within past few months ) & BOTH times were very disappointing!! Both times, we tried various burgers. BOTH times they were burnt beyond enjoyment, no flavor EXCEPT burnt!!! When I was calling to place our order the 2nd time, I politely explained to the person, we understand sometimes happen, but we'd like to avoid any potential issues (like last visit), & girl assured us she was sorry about last time, then gave the phone to a man (mgr) & he assured us it wouldn't happen again. He took our orders, told us when it'd be ready for pick up. Which was a reasonable amount of time for things to come out great. Results. ...FAILURE!!! BURNT TO A CHARCOAL CRISP!!! Very sad. We wanted to think that the first time was a bad day for them, but twice...AFTER being assured it was a mistake & it happens again...leads me to think either they burn everything or they don't value take out orders!????? Went there for the first time and last time was carded at the door like most places didn't think anything of it as we went to the bar to get our first drinks was carded again never happened to me before carded twice in one night order a rum and coke and a beer was to told i couldn't be double serviced but the man next to me walked away with to drinks said on took the beer and went back to the table a rew mins later went back to get a beer was carded again and when i didnt leave a tip the bartender said word for word (what no fucking tip ) I will never enter this place again read more
