I had not been in this neighborhood since prior to pandemic and was so glad to see so much activity, throngs of people out and about strolling and window shopping, etc. It was the coldest day of the year so I didn't spend time checking out if the stores and restaurants are open for patronage, I hope they are doing well. But, I've strayed far off topic. LOST LARSON has adjusted to new normal by having both an order window and a pick up window. The order window has a lovely display of the day's offerings, there were maybe a dozen things. Among the choices I noticed 3 unique large ($4) cookies and 1 savory croissant. As I perused my options I picked the brain of the very, very nicest order taker and then decided on the cinnamon roll (w/cream cheese filling) and the afternoon tea cake. Wow, both were light, fluffy, super duper sweet and delicious! I think I had a slight preference for the tea cake for its crystallized sugar taste. Will travel for baked goods. Though this bakery is quite a ways from where I live I frequent it often because it's that delicious. I've tried so many delicious treats here and am never disappointed. The ham and cheese croissant is the prefect snack. They balance the sweet and savory cravings. All the baked goods are out of this world without making you feel like you are a pound of sugar. Just WOW! A totally amazing Bakery experience. Walking in on a Sunday morning reminded me of the old Polish bakery's growing up. Coming from a cafe hopper: Love love love this spot! It's not only cozy, clean and cute, the food (drinks and pastries) are phenomenal. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable about their offerings. If I had to find a down side: it's the limited amount of seating. It's so popular there's always a line to order and you have to hover-squat for a seat. Best bet is to have someone in your group look for seating as the others order. I was back visiting Chicago in late February, and somehow I never went to Lost Larson while living only a couple miles away. WOW. WOW. WOW. There's not much more that I love than a great European (even better if specifically Scandinavian) bakery. This is be best one I've been to in the USA hands-down. I came here three days in a row averaging 3 pastries each time. The quality is unmatched, and the execution is spot on. I've spent around a month in Sweden over the course of a few trips, and Lost Larson really has Swedish pastry figured out. It's hard to easily rank, but the semla, princess cake, and cardamom buns are as delicious and authentic as it gets. If you visit Sweden, it's not going to be any better than this. The cinnamon roll was special and delicious, but wouldn't bother ordering given the specialties described above. That said, the ham and cheese croissant was out of this world and ordered on more than one occasion (as good as Ken's Artisan Bakery in Portland, OR which is the best one I've had prior to LL). I didn't bother with the bread (or anything aside from the pastries), but I hear it's fantastic. Do yourself a favor and go here. I lived in Chicago for 4 years - there just isn't any eating establishment that I am as excited to return to when I visit again, and I've eaten a lot in the Windy City. So.. Tried out a lot of different things since it's far from where I live and wanted to see if I should make the trek back. I think everything tasted pretty good. Like the sweetness was muted Items purchased: Afternoon tea bun: my favorite of all that I got. Loved the subtle tea flavor and the whole thing was covered in sugar! Delicious! Would definitely get again. Cardamom bun: very interesting and the cardamom works well in this bun, would maybe get again Kouign amann: I think they put salt on the top? Usually i would say salt accentuates the sweetness in pastries/desserts, but this one did not mesh well at all. Definitely would pass Almond croissant: not as flaky as i would want a bit dense for me, but husband liked this one so if I came back would get this for him Banana bread slice: with caramel on top and chocolate inside, I thought this would be sweet and tasty but alas, it was not. Would pass Lingonberry almond cake: pretty good, liked the lingonberry filling. Cake was a bit dense but appropriately so. We had the ham and cheese croissant, tebirkes, brownie with sea salt and chocolate ganache, a latte and hot chocolate. The tebirkes was very unique, the almond paste inside wasn't too sweet, the poppy seeds for a crunch and the croissant dough wasn't sweet. If you like almond croissants and want a slight variation, I highly recommend. The ham and cheese overall was well executed, I wish it was a little cruncher but the amount of ham inside was substantial. The chocolate brownie with ganache wasn't too sweet and stayed moist the following day. My only complaint is the hot chocolate was very watery even though there was milk used to make it. I don't live in Andersonville, but I decided to make the trek up from downtown Chicago when I discovered that Lost Larson is one of the few (if not the only) bakeries in Chicago that has the Swedish Princess Cake, aka the princesstårta, which was featured on during one of Great British Bake-Off's infamous technical challenges. LOL. I had to know if the cake lived up to the hype. Well, I not only discovered the wonders of Princess Cake but also the magic that is Lost Larson! Just about everything here is amazing. And they MILL THEIR OWN LOCALLY SOURCED FLOUR???? Excuse me??????? Bakery of my dreams. You'll find everything lovely that's savory, sweet, and inventive under the sun here. Coffee was also delicious. They have some very lovely syrups including lavender and campfire (a combination of nice spices to make your latte taste like a toasted marshmallow). Absolutely my favorite bakery in Chicago. I had high expectations for Lost Larson between the hype and high prices ($9 for a slice of cake!). I took a piece of the Princess Cake to go since all the tables were full. The cake with has layers of fondant, frosting, cake, custard, raspberry filling, and a crust. I was blown away by the raspberry and cake portions. The cake was so moist, and the raspberry tasted so fresh and was perfectly sweet. I also loved the dimension that the crust added. I wasn't as big of a fan of the frosting or fondant. The frosting was really flavorless to me and not quite sweet enough. While the fondant is better than many I've had, it still has an odd texture and taste to me. Overall, the cake was enjoyable! I would probably give it a 4, except for the high price for which I had higher expectations. I would be back to try something different, but probably not this cake again. read more

When I found out that there was a Scandinavian bakery close to where my friend and I were staying, I just had to make sure that we'd stop by here before we left town. Unfortunately for us, we came here a little late in the day, so there weren't as many pastries left. I ended up getting the last kardemummabullar and the last tebirkes pastries, which I shared with my friend. I imagine that their pastries taste better earlier in the morning, when they're fresher, as these were a little on the stale side. Still, it's not exactly easy to get either of those pastries anywhere in the U.S., so I was glad to have come by here and I'll certainly try to come here again if I manage to find myself in Chicago again in the near future. read more

Lost Larson is one home to some of the pastries in chicago. This location is spacious and has a nice back patio for when the weather is nice! Everything was delicious!!! The croissant was perfectly buttery. They ran out of spinach and feta so I got the focaccia instead topped with corn, Serrano peppers, and cheese. I didn't loooove the toppings but the bread itself was so light and fluffy. Mentally prepare yourself for a line if you're going on the weekend. I was annoyed because it was not clear where the order ahead pick up was located (the text did say to go up to the table but there were just a bunch of people gathered around who didn't know what to do). I also got a text that my order was ready but it definitely was not (nor was the order of a guy standing next to me who had received a text 5 minutes before I did) and I didn't get it until almost 15 minutes later. I just was annoyed by the chaos. It would be helpful with signs to indicate two lines. People were also waiting by the tables for drinks they had ordered at the regular window and it was just a lot. The reason I am writing this review is that I ate a piece of princess cake here and it was the best piece of cake that I have eaten. It was honestly such a fun experience because the cake was so good and special it was wild. It was just truly so creamy and soft with just right amount of almond flavor and crunch I cannot believe I am still thinking about it. I have also had other things here in the past including the cinnamon rolls and bread pudding. It's expensive so not the kind of place you can go a lot but totally worth the treat. I always find myself dazzled by their seasonal croissant and tart varieties. Absolutely incredible bakery. We've been the last two weekends in a row it's so good! We've had the English afternoon bun and cinnamon roll. They're both made with this buttery, flaky dough and have hints of citrus. The English bun has an early gray cinnamon sugar and the cinnamon roll has a citrusy cream cheese. So delicious!
