Formerly known as Thai Son/Thái Sơn, and also listed as Hương Xuân in Vietnamese, this is a decent Vietnamese spot that I went to a good while back with a group. The flavors were fine, with this place reminding me more of the spots on Baxter in Manhattan's Chinatown. The inside is casual, and the service was fine. To drink, I had a Soda Sua Hot Ga/Soda Sữa Hột Gà, or soda with yolk and condensed milk, for $5.95. I've had it before, and like before, it's a slightly sweet eggy drink with a bit of fizz. Two of us were there earlier than the rest of the group, so we got an appetizer to share. This was the $7.95 Goi Cuon/Gỏi Cuốn, which came with a choice of either shrimp or tofu, and we went with the former. The sticky rice paper was also filled with the typical veggies and served with a decent peanut sauce, topped with some crushed peanuts. The flavor of the roll was fine, though I wish the peanut sauce was a bit thicker. The other appetizer I tried was new to me, the Goi Tom Du Du/Gỏi Tôm Đu Đủ, which was $10.95 for a small or $18.50 for a large. I believe we got the latter, and it consisted of shrimp with shredded green papaya and peanuts. The shrimp was cut up into smaller pieces, which provided a unique texture along with the crunchier papaya. It was refreshing with a bit of sweetness, thanks to the fish sauce accompaniment. Others enjoyed the Muc Chien Guion/Mực Chiên Giòn, or in short, crispy squid. The dish was similarly priced to the other appetizer, with the small being the same price and the large a bit extra at $18.95. The rest of them enjoyed it, but I can't comment due to my cephalopod allergy, aside from the cucumbers and tomatoes on the bottom. Two of the main dishes were types of Banh Hoi/Bánh Hỏi, and they arrived around the same time. We went with Bo Lui/Bò Lụi and Thit Heo Nuong/Thịt Heo Nướng. The former was $20.50 and consisted of grilled sesame-seasoned beef, while the latter was $18.50 and had grilled pork. As they were banh hoi, both were served with angel hair noodles, lettuce, cucumber, mint leaves, and the obligatory fish sauce. They were both tasty, with a definite preference for the beef, which was tender and juicy with a bit of smokiness. We also added the $20 Nem Nuong/Nem Nướng, but I don't remember much outside of enjoying it like the other BBQ. We also got two types of BBQ, the Ga Nuong/Gà Nướng (chicken) and the Suon Heo Nuong/Sườn Heo Nướng (pork chop). They were both $18.50, and my preference was definitely the pork chop of the two, as I liked how grilled it was with a bit of char. The chicken wasn't bad either. I also appreciated the pickled mustard greens served along with the pork, compared to the scallions and lettuce with the grilled chicken. Outside of that, the chicken was pretty well seasoned. One of the better main dishes was the $20.50 Ca Kho To/Cá kho tộ, or caramel fish casserole. In this case, it was made with salmon, and the flavor was excellent. I wish the portion was a bit larger, but I liked how well-cooked the salmon was, with evenly slightly burnt sections having a ton of flavor. If you don't mind paying a bit more, this was very tasty. There was also the Rau Muong Xao Toi/Rau Muống Xào Tỏi, or water spinach with garlic, for $17.95. The portion was plentiful, and the greens were nicely blanched. I wish there was a bit more garlic flavor, but it worked well enough as a veggie side dish along with all the meat. The most expensive was the $21.50 Pho Xao Do Bien/Phở Xào Đồ Biển, or mixed seafood chow fun. The mixed seafood was lightly flavored, reminding me more of a brown sauce from a Cantonese spot. The noodles were a bit chewy, and there was a decent mix of protein. In short, it was decent. Finally, there was the $20.50 Bo Luc Lac/Bò Lúc Lắc, or sautéed marinated beef cubes with salad. This wasn't my favorite version of shaken beef, as it lacked a bit in both flavor and texture. Some spots add more depth, and the beef was slightly chewy. I would recommend going elsewhere for this dish. We had a decent time here. The portions were fine for the price, but I prefer some other places in terms of flavor. As said, stick with the BBQ, and you'll have a decent time.

Kind of weird that the staff didn't think of getting from a hardware store, one of those tarps that catches ceiling leaks and diverts the water thru a hose to a bucket... that isn't in the way of customers entering the restaurant. Anyway, we sat down, and ordered an old favorite dish, and decided to try a new one. The old favorite is the House-made Fish Cake Pho (Pho Cha Ca)! The kitchen staff hand makes the fish paste from scratch, with some kind of super addictive & flavorful spices, and I've really enjoyed it in the past. We also decided to try the Shaking Beef Rice (Com Bo Lac Lac) for the first time. Unfortunately, both dishes were disappointing. The fish cake in the pho looked and tasted like typical frozen type you can get at any Asian market... and was confirmed when we asked the staff. Where's my ATF fish cake?!? The beef cubes in the rice dish were (a) super overcooked (like beef jerky level chewy) and (b) the sauce was way, way too salty. We also noticed the restaurant manager, Ngan, wasn't working that night. Perhaps all these problems happened because she was away on holiday? I ordered Vietnamese comfort food. I have never travelled to Vietnam, but I certainly enjoy and have an appreciation of international ethnic cuisines. This main course originated in Northern Vietnam. I practiced walking meditation for bodily movement as exercise and attempt for mental clarity from Forest Hills to Rego Park. It was near empty when I entered at 11:30 am on a June Monday. My male server pulled a laminated QR code card from the condiment tray and plopped down instructing me to scan it for the menu. I immediately gave him a wracked with grief and anguish look as scanning such QR codes was during COVID-19 era which now post COVID-19 it is very callous and utter impersonal. My male server retreated to rebuke my anguish look for resilience "we have paper menus" which I gladly viewed after my eyes were intensely examined earlier. I do not want to doom scrolling during my meal including sitting at a restaurant or cafe. Albeit, I would certainly Yelp check-in and take photos during my time in the business. The paper menu is a takeout menu. Facilities are located in the basement with low head room as you walk these steps. It is relatively clean and bathroom sink is outside the toilet area shared by all genders. Patrons can visibly see boxes, shipping crates of their inventory are pipe high disorganized disarray by the bathroom sink foyer. Customer service is average. Flank and Brisket Phở, $17.25 Thinly sliced rare flank and cooked brisket. It is customary accompanied with a separate plate of room temperate Asian bean sprouts with a piece of fresh lime, a staple for Vietnamese Pho. It was served hot, but not piping hot as it should. The broth was very oily and flavorful with onions. The soup broth oil bubbles are very visible for the high level of cholesterol and fat content. The rice noodles were chopped rather than long continuous noodle strains. The meat seemingly appeared semi-cooked as there were noticeable visible pink areas. I preferred if my meat were well done for cooking level. What would "Lisa from Temecula" - Saturday Night Live think if her meat had pink areas for uncooked meat? The character is notorious for ordering her steaks "extra, extra well done." Pho 99 has handheld devices for wait staff to approach customers with credit/debit payment (aka cashless) at the table. There is a 4% discount when payments are cash. I paid in cash, attained the 4% discount and obtained my sales receipt. Dinning tables are modern large dark color, but no table linens. The long booth bench cushion against the wall material appears very worn and dirty. Their disclaimer is written on the utensil wrap "hand-crafted ietnamese noodle soup 100% beef broth, no MSG, fresh house-made noodles." VIETNAMESE is noticeably misspelt, missing the "V." The reverse side has a sketch of Vietnam country map. Inside this utensil wrap contains one gold emblem spoon, black matte lacquer chopsticks, and one napkin. This business is accessible via MTA NYC Transit M, R local trains at 67th Avenue subway station in Rego Park, Queens, NYC. I walked to reach this business for my visit.

But the little dining room reminds me of an intimate French bistro, but with Thai accents. Very homey feeling. Everything we ordered was top notch in flavor. Just an explosion of flavors in each bite. Likewise service was excellent. We went on a Wednesday night so we got extra attentive service. Looking forward to bringing our family and friends here.
