I have been eating at Lotus for years but mainly in their Chicago location. Thai is the first time I ate at this location which has a very nice ambiance with the earthy vibe of wood and plants. It's still a restaurant for a quick meal. You can order on their touch screen which is nice but still leaves room for human error. Now the food is always flavorful which is obviously the most important part of a restaurant. However, for today's bahn mi I ordered jalapeños but sadly they were not on my sandwich which made it less than ideal. The wings were delish and the iced coffee was rich in flavor. I was excited to try this spot with a group of friends to get some authentic Vietnamese food in a nicely decorated setting. The restaurant itself is quite spacious and clean, with lots of tables for casual seating, quick service, and easy ordering. Prices are a bit on the higher side for Vietnamese food but not overly so and the usual bun, pho, rice bowl, and banh mi options were available, though with a bit less choice than the typical full Vietnamese restaurant. For me, the food here was fresh, but a disappointment -- as in it was quite mild and tempered down from what I'd normally expect from a Vietnamese restaurant. The noodle salads were maybe too much salad and not enough herbs and meat for me. It had all the different components that you'd expect to find in the dish, but maybe if there was more acid in the pickled daikon and carrot, extra cilantro, more basil, additional fish sauce, and the meat were a bit more fatty (I tried both beef and pork), it would've made for a better combination. Instead it felt like an Asian themed salad underneath with some meat on top that felt like more of an afterthought. The pho for me was incredibly mild. The broth barely flavored the noodles for me and had a thin consistency, where I expect a super flavorful, dark, and rich broth that really draws out the flavor of beef meat and an assortment of spices. The cilantro also had its delicate oils completely cooked inside the broth and there was hardly any basil provided. The beef itself was too lean and became a bit overcooked when put inside the broth. Overall, this option is good if you're looking for fast casual Vietnamese food that's a bit more approachable for those newer to the cuisine. But if you're looking for something closer to what you find on Argyle St, this would not meet your needs. read more

Hands down this place has the best banh mi that I dream about coming back to. They're generous on their meats portion, and the bread is soft and fresh. It's just something you have to taste for yourself. Their banh mi are special and as a Viet, I fully approve. The price is bit more than some others but it's fully worth it. No doubt the Banh Mi to get here is Sunny Side Beef $13.45 (must have) which includes a runny egg and THE most amazing soy sauce. I think it might be the same sauce in the Soy Glazed Wings as well $11 (for 6) and always leaving us craving for more. The Honey Grilled Pork banh mi is fully loaded with meat and also delicious $10.45. It has lesser sauce but you can taste the flavor. We love coming here with the fam for some quick eats and plan to come back again to try the rest of the menu. The service is friendly and the food comes out fast. We saw Max on both visit and he really made us feel at home. Did we mention that we really love it here? Overall, this modern Viet cafe is a gem of a place in Oakbrook! We ordered a Pork House Noodle Salad (Rice noodle, pork eggroll, honey, lemongrass, garlic, fish sauce) and the Beef Pho (onions, scallion, cilantro, basil, beansprouts and lime on the side). The food was only average. The pork was sweet and had a good flavor. Everything else was adequate but not special. The basil, cilantro, and pho broth were not flavorful like I am accustomed to. I saw this place after a friend of mine wanted to try a new place. This place has great ratings, so I was ready for a great experience. Unfortunately, other than the service, I can't recommend this place over others such as Viet Taste. You order and pay for your food at the counter, and then they bring it to your table. This process was pretty fast, but there were not many people there on a Tuesday night. The food is rather lackluster compared to what the reviews have said. I ordered the chicken curry bowl, and this wasn't very good. They only give a small portion or curry sauce on the side. This wouldn't be too much of a problem except it lacked a strong flavor and resulted in much of the dish being tasteless. The chicken in the dish was pretty good, however, but still lacked the flavor that should have been delivered by the curry. The one thing I agree with compared to the other reviews is that the vegetables are very fresh. While that is true, I didn't order a curry dish for the only highlight to be the vegetables. The springs rolls once again tasted very fresh but barely had anything in them. A majority of the spring roll was a cucumber half, and compared to other places, it wasn't the best. We also received a pork egg roll, which was actually pretty good flavor and texture wise. The pho that my friend had looked very diluted, and after tasting it, my friend was reluctant to finish the bowl. Overall, try it once and see if it fits your taste, but I will look to other places at this point. read more

The vegetables and the cilantro... SO fresh! It's like they went grocery shopping a minute before they made our food. It was nice they asked if we wanted jalapeno. I was disappointed by the pho quality and quantity here. It was very watered down and the meat is cheap. No idea how this place has 5 stars. Quality- the pho broth is very watery, had no flavor depth, and had a very transparent color which is not typical of traditional darker pho broth. The broth Honestly tasted like dirty dish water. It was a bit on the sour side and came out lukewarm which is unacceptable. The pho noodles were normal but the meat was the cheapest I've ever had. The meat was not good here. I expected normal beef slices like those you see in hot pot or other pho places. Instead I got these really scrunched up small meat pieces which didn't look nice. The meat also tasted old and dry...kinda like it was stored in the fridge for too long. The spring rolls were not bad but the peanut sauce was also a bit watered down. It just didn't taste right. Also, the sriracha sauce in the store tastes fake. It didn't have that traditional tangy taste normal sriracha has. Maybe the sauce is just old, I don't know. Quantity- not impressed here. For 15 bucks I expect more than 1 type of meat and I also expected more noodles too. All the other pho places I go to give way more for 12 bucks. We get beef balls, tripe, tendon, and good beef slices over there and makes this place look cheap. Atmosphere- I hate the entrance door. It never closes right and cold air comes in. They need to fix the door. Also, the lights are too bright. I feel like I'm getting interrogated. Service- pay up front and they bring it out for you. Nothing to comment on here except they ask for a tip which rubs me the wrong way. Why should I tip if you're not serving me or giving me water and other stuff. read more

Absolute GEM!!! It's a small, cozy fast-casual spot in the middle of a busy Oakbrook shopping corridor. We came in on Saturday during late lunch, and ordered 2 banh mi sandwiches and a Beef Pho. The sandwiches were simply amazing. The buns were fresh, soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. The filling was fresh, warm, flavorful and absolutely delicious! The pho was delightful, had great toppings and deep flavor! Only small gripe is I would have liked a bit more toppings to add besides that Thai basil and bean sprouts (like cilantro, onions, jalapeño, etc.) but the simplicity of the pho was overshadowed by its great flavor and the HUGE portion (which we ate and took home the leftovers for 2 additional meals) The price point was slightly higher than "fast food" but manageable at about $40 for two people for 2 sandwiches, Pho, and a can of soda. They were large, fresh, and tasted perfect with their light pineapple peanut sauce. For the main course we enjoyed their namesake Banh Mi. My husband had the Ginger Chicken and I had the Honey Grilled Pork. We were both surprised with how big and filling they were.
