My husband asked me where I wanted to eat for my 43rd birthday and I was craving Vietnamese but wanted to find a new place. I looked up highly rated Vietnamese restaurants and found Tasty House 1 in Carol Stream. This place is everything we anticipated it to be. The location is nice and has parking in front, inside is super spacious and had a relaxing and breathable ambiance. We ordered a family appetizer platter that came with all the delicious Vietnamese appetizers like: spring rolls, bbq marinated meat, fried eggrolls, grilled jumbo shrimp, meat wrapped in betel leaf, lettuce, noodles, cucumbers, cabbage, tomatoes, daikon, jalapeños, two dipping sauces: peanut butter hoisin and Vietnamese fish sauce. Another appetizer we got separately was the fried calamari which had a great crunchy texture, the absolute best! For our entrees I decided to build my own pho and chose tripe, rib eye steak and quail eggs. My husband got the spicy beef noodle soup (Bun Bo Hue). This is honestly the best Vietnamese we've ever had in our lives!!!! I'm so glad I found this place. Awesome service, food and atmosphere. Zero complaints everything was very fresh and perfect. I was here with a large group. This is a small family restaurant, with a surprisingly large menu (not all of which may be in stock). There is a separate vegan menu with half a dozen things on it, and other than the drinks and desserts, pretty much nothing on the regular menu is vegetarian. (The papaya salad, which is on the vegan menu, is a ringer: it contains fish sauce.) You've got your choice of various fruit lemonades, bubble teas, popping bubble teas, jellies, etc. Desserts include flan, Vietnamese yogurt, coconut jelly - none of which you'll be eating onsite as you'll be too full after your entree. Portions are on the large side - even the papaya salad is a meal. I got the peach lemonade, vegetable spring rolls and the tofu, vegetable and noodles, which turned out to be a soup, basically Vietnamese ramen. The spring rolls are tasty and come with peanut sauce; the vegetable broth was savory with lots of baby bok choy, plenty of noodles and cubes of fried tofu - it was even better with some of the homemade hot sauce, which I highly recommend. The lemonade comes in a bubble tea disposable cup and contains tiny pieces of fruit - very fruity, not very citrusy. Service was friendly and very personable, which helps if you're serving 16 people. Didn't manage to even get to the restaurant. I called early afternoon asking whether I needed to make a reservation. The lady says "no, only if you have a party of 4 or more." I say okay if I come at 7.30pm will it be busy - she says no... Half an hour before driving over to the restaurant I check online for the exact address and I see that the place closes at 8pm ! On a Saturday night ! So I call and the same lady sullenly informs me that yes, not only do they close at 8 but the KITCHEN CLOSES at 7.30. Really? I would say the name of this restaurant is fairly misleading. My wife ordered the chicken stir fry noodles, took one bite and couldn't take another. Her chicken appeared to be marbled (mostly dark meat) which was really off-putting. I had the shrimp po boy, which was OK, but consisted of bite-sized shrimp that was mostly breading and very little sauce. Our waitress was nice, and clearly a family member based on her age. The pictures online lured me into the small family owned business. I usually order rib tips but I tried something new , ribeye eggs and sausage. Such a delicious way to start a beautiful Sunday. We were craving pho and bahn mi so decided to try Tasty House! It was my first time and it was super cute inside. Not crowded on a Saturday and we got seated immediately. We split the breakfast bahn mi and both got a bowl of the beef pho. The bahn mi definitely exceeded my expectations!! The bread was perfectly crusty and soft, the meat was tender and the pickled veggies were delish. The pho was also good. I visited again 10 months after my first visit, and our server STILL REMEMBERED US. That's pretty incredible. Service is still fantastic, and this hits all the checkmarks of wholesome, family-run small business. We ordered different items this time, and they were all great. It looks like they keep expanding their menu, which is nice. Banh Mi: One of the few places that still has affordable banh mi. It's only $7-8! I got the BBQ pork (char siu) and it was delicious. Bread was pretty good. Pork was flavorful and rich. Steak and Meatball Pho: $15, which isn't that cheap. However, it's tasty. Vegetables all tasted fresh. The steak and the meatballs were both good. Broth was rich and saltiness was just right. Strawberry Bingsoo ($7.50): I've only had bingsoo in South Korea and Ktown in LA. I don't have much of a frame of reference outside of that. So... this bingsoo obviously doesn't stack up to those, but it's still a nice dessert to order. The strawberry one comes with mochi on top. I love that they keep expanding their dessert menu. The grilled trio was so delicious, the broth of pho was so tasty,but the beef was so well done,it should be half cooked only. Nobody explained or told us that we'll get charged 5% for convenience fee,we had to look it up what's that charge for. No sign anywhere mentioned about the fee either. If they explained that we'll get charged the fee if we used credit card then we would have the option for other payments. Now I have to rethink about comeback there. I'm not going to lie, when I see bún riêu (crab noodle soup) on the menu, I'm going to get it. Most of the time, it's always a disappointment. It's not flavorful, it doesn't taste like bún riêu, etc. Apparently they do specialty dishes every so often on Wednesdays and Thursday, on a first come first serve basis. I lucked out and had their LAST bowl of bún riêu! Let me circle back and mention that I've had my fair share of bún riêu, in restaurants and homemade. Of course homemade is always superior. This bún riêu was soooo flavorful! I was pleasantly surprise! I didn't even need to put fermented shrimp paste in! Probably the best bowl in restaurant made bún riêu I've had so far. This makes me anticipate their best speciality for next week!! We also had their new fried chicken rice dish, for the second time. It's still just as good as the first time we had it. The chicken is fried to a crispy, but still retained its juiciness. I love that it's not battered either! I'm not sure how they fry it, but the crispiness on this is unmatched, and the best part is that it's not overly oily either. The rice is slightly flavored, or so I assumed cause it's yellow-ish. This was our second eating this dish and it's probably would go-to dish now. We've dined here a number of times. Every so often we arrive AFTER a huge party - I mean like one time there were 30 people - and the wait tends to be long, but the staff always apologize for the long wait and will try to get our order to us as soon as it's ready. The service was amazing. There was one girl working at the time I went. She was attentive and I never had to go out of my way to flag her down. She just came by to ask every once in a while. Tasty house1 is quickly becoming one of my go to pho spots in the area. The special combo pho is my go to order when dining in. Good portion sizes as well. My wife loves the vermicelli. I believe we met the owners and their kids a while back, they were really nice, especially when we told them about my wife's peanut allergy. They quickly accommodated it. My wife and I recently tried the grilled pork with egg and sizzling pork with eggs dishes which was surprisingly good. Smoothies are also good! Don't taste like artificially powdered drinks like other competitors. I'm sure they use fresh fruit. Tapioca is soft and not too chewy. The only complaint I have, which is very minute, is that the stems were not cut off and there was a lot more mint to my liking on the spring rolls. Fresh, tasty and consistent. They have items and ingredients on the menu that other Vietnamese restaurants do not. Seems authentic and even takeout presentation shows it was made with care. I tried something I haven't before --Jumbo sizzling shrimp and egg. I suppose I was thinking of tomato egg with shrimp and was expecting rice to come with, but there's none. There is, however, a fresh baguette in the bag though. I do love fresh bread! Prices were always a bit higher here but worth it because of the quality. I feel like they've raised the prices though. $18.95 for what appears to be 5 medium sized shrimp feels steep. I understand prices have been jacked up almost everywhere, but still. Tasty House1 is a little gem in Carol Stream by the Fountain View center. They have good Vietnamese food. I've tried their banh and some of their other dishes. They are very friendly and have plenty of seating inside. There is a waiting area with some high tops if you only want smoothies. I don't love their smoothies but they have a lot of options and they are pretty tasty. I get that pork is a huge part of Viet cuisine, and I am a fan but I wish they would have some easy non pork options. Like, they have a sizzling steak but it comes with pork sausage. If I don't eat pork, I either have to omit it, or ask for it on the side. But they don't really do it on the side. Also, they support the local town events, but usually they only bring pork spring rolls. Amazing, but they do sell veggie rolls. I guess they figure it won't be as popular. The prices are a bit high for a casual Asian restaurant, but certainly worth it, with the fresh ingredients, tasty entreés, no MSG, and excellent service. Thanks to Yelp, we discovered this Vietnamese restaurant that is not too far from Costco Bloomingdale where we gassed up. I ordered the Tasty House 4-course of Vermicelli Noodles (N10), a big bowl of noodles topped with shrimp, egg rolls, grilled pork, grilled Vietnamese sausage (looks like spam, but not salty), fresh & crunchy bean sprouts, slivers of carrot and cucumber. My hubby ordered the Phô Special Combo (P5) with ribeye steak, meatball, brisket, tendon, tripe in a delicious beef broth. We were too full in the end to even think of dessert, or even sharing a smoothie. But we look forward to returning to try out one or two of the many desserts available. The restroom is quite clean for an Asian restaurant. Hopefully they keep it up. Not only is the owner, Ryan, very friendly, but his little son is a gentleman who opens the door for guests, brings over the water glasses and tableware, and might even take your order on a tablet device! Hungry for decent Asian food on a Monday? That was me, trying to find a local place. Luckily found Tasty House in Fountain View center. Open Monday, closed Tuesday! Such a smart decision! Also was told when a holiday falls on a Monday, they get an extra day off/closed! But now, let's get to the real reason you're reading this. How was the food? The Bahn Mi's were well-filled with condiments and protein. The ratio to bread was spot on. Flavors were tasty. Shrimp was not overcooked and plentiful! The noodle dish to-go travelled well, even after slamming my brakes to avoid a car who just had to pull out in front of me instead of waiting for me to pass. So, my bag of goodies flew off my passenger seat! The dish tasted amazing after mixing all together. They even had a small container of peanuts to sprinkle on top! My only wish was to have some grilled char on the pork. I look forward to having the time to eat in and try other items. The owner came out and introduced himself and told us all about himself and the food. His family is part of the business and there were many regulars giving us recommendations. We stumbled on Tasty House visiting family. This is the best Pho I have had in a long time! Everything is fresh and authentic. Egg rolls taste like they were made to order. There is a home made spicy oil on the table that compliments the Pho perfectly. We only were able to try the one Pho dish tonight, but I'm sure all the food is fantastic. This place was AMAZING. We went around lunch time and was quiet. The establishment was very clean. We got to pick our seats. We ordered fried eggs rolls which were so so good and fresh.
