While my preference for pizza style is either NY or Detroit, when in Chicago, you gotta try the deep dish. I found myself in Evanston within walking distance of this Lou Malnati's, it was 9:30 pm on a weekday, and I was hungry, so I walked in and asked if they were closing soon. They technically close at 10 pm but they were more than happy to accommodate me. The restaurant was fairly empty because the dinner rush had passed, so I sat down, ordered quickly, and about 15-20 minutes later, my piping hot personal size deep dish came out. I gotta say, it was really good. That buttery crust - it's something you just have to experience for yourself. It was also the perfect size if you eat a lot. Yes - I finished it myself and was highly satisfied. The staff was super nice and the ambiance was clean and inviting. I also love the location - really close to Northwestern University and walkable from the Hilton Orrington/Evanston. If you're in the area, give it a try! read more

Great location, plenty of street parking available. Staff is really friendly and helpful. Usually Lou's by me are takeaway only. But this has a dining room, that looks like a library with plus booth bench seats. I came early for happy hour timing which was a plus because the personal pizza is $5 each. Ordered a few apps like bruschetta and crispy ravioli as well as the pan pizza was 35-40mins prep. The crust for the pizza was particularly good today and was a good meal. Decided to try deep dish pizza. The place wasn't as busy as usual. But they do have a lot of to go orders. We had to wait for 45min for a personal deep dish pizza. The pizza was disappointing because it wasn't hot enough when it arrived! The chicken Alfredo was good and the Caesar salad was ok. The service Marie G greeted us and was very helpful and kept checking in on us. The place was clean and somewhat decorated for the holidays season. The crust is not that buttery cornmeal that belongs nowhere near a pizza. The location in Evanston was maybe a quarter-full on a Friday night before a Northwestern football game, so I don't imagine it's ever had a line down the street. First visit to Chicago, we decided to go for a classic. We stayed north in Evanston and fell in love with the area. Two weeks ahead of our trip, I joined their rewards and got a free personal pizza coupon that expired the day we arrived, so we headed over as soon as we settled in. When we walked in, we saw a note on the door that they were closing at 8 pm for their staff holiday party, and we knew we needed to get in and out of their hair before then. Luckily we knew what we wanted to order before we walked in, so we were easy. I got the personal The Lou, and my husband got the Malnati Chicago Classic, and both came out piping hot. I got a side of ranch and garlic dressing that were perfect for dipping crust in. As we wrapped up the meal, I had a hard time figuring out how to redeem the coupon, so the manager took care of it for me! He went out of his way to make sure tables were being tended to as well, very personable. Came in for their soft opening of the their new $5 happy hour menu (M-F 3-530) and overall we were happy. Granted we didn't pay a penny, but the apps and pizza we tried were all very good and the prices are very reasonable. Staff were friendly and happy to share the details with us. I grew up in Chicago and this is by far the best deep dish pizza in city!! Their crust is just perfect and doesn't feel like an insane amount of bread to work through. There sauce tastes fresh and cheese is just right. I recently went gluten free and even still, the pizza is amazing!! I ordered food for pickup and arrived 10 mins after the scheduled time, only to wait an additional hour because they were "extremely busy." That was the only explanation offered. Several other customers were also standing around waiting, so this clearly isn't a one-off issue. I understand Superbowl Sunday is busy -- but then don't accept pickup orders you can't fulfill anywhere close to on time. You have customer's phone numbers and email addresses with the order. At the very least, you could notify people to come later instead of letting them show up and waste an hour of their time. What makes this experience even worse is that I was not allowed to cancel the order. Every time I tried, I was told I had to call because it was an online order. When I called, I was told only a manager could cancel it. Unsurprisingly, the manager never came on the line. This wasn't just bad service -- it was a complete disregard for customers' time and money. Being busy is not an excuse for poor communication, disorganization. While the crustless is only available as a basic cheese deep dish thanks to its sausage crust, the Lou had a mix of tomatoes, spinach, sauce, and cheese in multiple sizes on the house gluten-free crust! My GF pizza was brought out and served separately from the regular deep dish my group ordered (separate tray, pan, and spatula).
