After a poor experience with a different location we recently visited the Surprise location in Arizona. I have to say the food and service were very good. If I could shake Mr. Malnati's hand personally, I would. My family would follow very close behind. We are in love. We all agreed this being the best pizza we have ever had - every single bite. My family and I did not experience one bad bite during our dinner. We ordered Lou's on DoorDash and everything was delivered piping hot as if we were being served table-side. What a disappointing experience. I used to live in Scottsdale and visiting for the week. Top of my list was a pizza at Lou Malnati. We ordered the pizza to go and as soon as I opened the box I knew something was wrong. The deep dish crust is paper thin and there was a moat of liquid all around the pizza and on top. Which made the already paper thin crust soggy. What is up with the stewed tasteless tomatoes instead of an actual sauce? I had to actually drain the pizza because there was too much liquid from the canned tomatoes to soak up with a paper towel. And do you not have any seasonings? The veggies and even the sausage had no flavor. $40 for a medium pizza down the drain. I was shocked to see the reviews. Guess I should have made sure the quality didn't change over the last couple years. Trust the reviews people. Pizza Hut does a much better pan pizza. What a way to destroy a legacy. read more

Answered all our detailed questions and was so sweet and awesome! They are gluten free, not just gluten friendly. They give you your pizza uncut. Just a heads up! If you are going to try to eat in the car bring your pizza cutters! =) The sauce is the best part. They use a nice cheese as well. We ordered 2 gluten free mushroom pizzas. Has anyone tried to eat this pizza before placing on the market at the locations? It was as hard as a rock. We couldn't bite through the crust. You can see in the photos the edges were very dark. The entire pizza was like that. The rice, eggwhite, corn, potato, tapioca recipe was solid. Too solid to bite. We all have cavity free healthy chompers. There was just no way to chew the crust. Not even in the center. Pizza top flavor yummy,, 1 star for being unedible. A pizza cutter would not cut, but it broke in half easily. The girls ate the light cheese and mushroom topping we requested off. That got us by until we went to another pizza place to get something we could chew. Lou's flavor and people are awesome. My favorite pizza place. There's no seating. Just order through the app and take it home or get it delivered. You can't pay with a gift card on the app though. I had to call in the order and pay upon pickup. Not a major deal, it's just easier for me to pay online and then pick it up, but that is my personal preference. I always get the Chicago Classic. Omg. Out of all the pizza I've eaten, this easily has the best sauce. I don't have it cut and just cut it at home. It's deep dish pizza with a delicious crispy crust, lots of cheese and sausage. So so good. The sausage is a lean sausage so it's not super fatty and greasy on top of the cheese. The Lou's bruschetta is always good as well. The tomatoes are always nicely ripened, basil tastes super fresh, and there's garlic bread rounds (they aren't "cheesy" garlic bread rounds, they are like garlic toast). Their garlic bread is pretty good for what it is, but it does taste like pretty standard garlic bread. No complaints though. The other thing I always get is the Malnati salad. It's a huge hearty salad with a sweet vinaigrette. This is my absolute favorite salad and salad dressing. It comes with black olives, mushrooms, tomatoes, Romano & Gorgonzola cheese, and salami bits. They have other salad dressing options, but I stick with my favorite. The wings are decent, but nothing wildly special. They are good though, so I'll get them if I'm craving wings & deep dish pizza. It is a lot of good though. I haven't tried the pasta or sandwich yet. It's on my list to try. Desserts: Skip the cookies. They were pretty hard and dry and didn't have a lot of chocolate chips. I don't know if that's how they always are, but they seemed like they were a few days old, or just need to improve the recipe. I like chewy chocolate chip cookies stuffed with chocolate chips, but that's just how I like them. The tiramisu doesn't really have a lot of coffee flavor or a lot of mascarpone flavor. It wasn't a dry cake but it didn't taste like tiramisu. It tastes like a vanilla cake mostly. It wasn't gross, just not like tiramisu. read more

However, the crust is not Chicago style thin crust, and I'm from Chicago. It was good, but it was just different from what I was used to the usual Chicago tavern style. We tried this place one last time last night. So disappointed. Not even close to the same deep dish this location used to serve when they first opened which we used to love. Have given them several chances after we noticed the changes. We noticed the pizza looked different as soon as we opened the box. Now, the crust is hard and tastes like cardboard, too minimal sauce, overwhelming amount of gloppy cheese, and toppings not fresh. Such a shame, especially after paying $63 for one large and one small deep dish. Would happily pay this for quality, but this was like a store-bought frozen pizza. Will not return. read more

They changed the formula folks! You now how Fun Size candy bars got so teeny tiny? That's what Lou has officially done to the crust size of what is supposed to be a deep dish PAN pizza. It is now a hard as a rock crust with a little lip on the side to make you think it's deep dish. You know Lou's and Gino's East were the places in Chicago for special occasions . And when you saw how deep the crust was when the server cut it for the very first piece, you thought it was a holy sight. The big lip of crust with a thick bottom of crust is the definition of deep dish. It is no longer. Cutting corners and dough depth for extra profit is a joke. You just ruined Lou's, officially. Folks, you might as well save some money and buy their crappy thin crust pizza. Make sure you don't crack a crown eating it. By the way, I'm not the only reviewer saying this. They've gotten better since they opened, when they had no idea how to make pizza. At one point, I was told the amount of ingredients they use is "subjective" and changes. What? I got a small pizza & and an order of wings which both tasted very good. The small pizza is definitely the smallest I've seen and it says it feeds two but would definitely disagree. Hi As I'm from Chicago I know my pizza, and it's a shame that Lou's has altered the recipe to make it a smaller deep dish with less crust all in the name of profit [this was confirmed by manager]. You used to have to use a knife to cut it, but now they don't even give a knife as it is not necessary to cut through the thin crust. What a shame that a decades-long tradition and reputation has gone done the drain!!! I have ate here a lot because I want to keep giving this place a chance to succeed, but after last night, I'm done. I ordered a pizza with extra sauce, and I get home and there's tomato slices on top of the pizza, with hardly any sauce on the pizza... even the receipt said extra sauce. It's ridiculous. The deep dish wasn't really as thick as I anticipated. But I was a fan of the sauce. It wasn't sweet or over the top. We also tried the crust less pizza which has sausage as the base and it was really good. Nothing being a huge pizza fan this was a good option. Lou Malnati's is an amazing pizza brand. The local locations in Scottsdale and central Phoenix are fantastic. Sadly, the Glendale location doesn't always live up to those experiences. The food is inconsistent. The order is usually either missing items or something is not quite right. When they have it right, they get it done wonderfully but unfortunately, that's only been about 40% of the times we've gone there. I hope they get a heavier mgmt team who can focus on QA. It wasn't just the gluten-free crust that was bad. The pizza had NO TASTE. To top it all off they charged me $35 when the menu said it was between 22 and $24.
