When Louie says "fusion", he really means it. Louie's is certainly a mixed bag of American, Southwestern, Cuban, Mexican, and even a little Mediterranean fare. It all melds together though into a great menu which has something for everyone. As others have commented, the dining room is no frills. It's quite large, with plenty of seating. Service was great. The staff is courteous and will provide samples if you ask them. As I mentioned, the menu has tons of variety. Their are usually at least a half dozen daily specials as well. For appetizers, I recommend any of their soups (crab bisque, chili, and the awesome Creamy Jalapeno soup are all recommended). Also, try the fried plantains which are made to perfection...no sogginess here! Prices are reasonable, figure about $10-15 a person. Entrees have generous portions and often include a side of rice and black beans. You certainly won't leave hungry. Others have said Louie's is a step below Starliner, which I find hard to argue with, but it's a small step. When Starliner is packed I don't hesitate to drive down the road to Louie's. read more

Sorry, but I have one recommendation for any prospective or current business owner: "the customer is always right." When we received a chimi that had shrimp in it instead of chicken we promptly sent it back. A few minutes later, our server came back and proceeded to tear open the chimi, poke around with her fork, and show us that it was indeed chicken! I know what I ate and I know that it was shrimp, whether it was inadvertently put there or not is irrelevant. There was no need to humiliate a first time customer (she knew this because she asked us earlier) by eviscerating their food in front of them and trying to prove them wrong. Now that I have that off my chest, we should move on to the food. The one shining star of the meal was the fried plantains and whatever the dipping sauce was. They were excellent. Second on the list was the chicken quesadilla which was plump and tasty. The "fusion chicken" sandwich was as my friend put it "just a chicken sandwich." Nothing special going on here. The two kids meals were definitely not "made from scratch" as the waitress suggested all the food is. My "eats anything" kid couldn't finish her spaghetti. Alas all things must end, and at the end of this sad story was a case of sticker shock. The server didn't charge us for the chimi and the bill still came out to over sixty dollars (what?!). Sixty dollars for 3 adults and two children is, in my opinion, quite a stretch for a place like this. We didn't drink any alcohol and one person only had water. We were charged for some extra fries that I told her we didn't want. In conclusion, I live 5 minutes from here and drive by here almost every day. I am sad that I have no desire to visit and support this local business again. read more

Louie's Grill is a spin-off of Starliner Diner (also in Hilliard), so if you like SD, you'll probably enjoy Louie's. And vise versa. Definitely a connection in the taste. Got the Ropa Viejas, a reliable Cuban shredded beef dish. The service was nice and the waitress catered to the fact that our group has one more person coming and kept that plate warm. I should have known, I really should have known better. The mere word fusion frightens me but over the years I have had many pleasant experiences in restaurants where they truly fuse various cuisines to come up with something really unique. This experience was fusion at the opposite end of that spectrum. Fusion at Louie's means trying to offer a variety of dishes from each of their 4 acclaimed specialties - Mexican, Cuban, Italian and Puerto Rican. Oh and while we're add it let's add in some burgers just in case the other 4 cuisines don't strike a fancy. I stuck with a Mexican'ish theme based on Mexican having more offerings on the menu. I ordered the stuffed poblanos with chipotle sauce. No discernible chipotle flavoring in the sauce and the peppers themselves seemed to have an obvious pre-frozen flavor to the breading. I'm not claiming that they ARE frozen, just saying that they tasted that way to me. The first plate came out raw in the middle and I had to send it back. Contrary to other reviews, I had excellent service. They were prompt, polite, even genuinely friendly and very apologetic over the first plate being undercooked. The atmosphere was pleasant, if somewhat sterile - but clean. I guess based on the references to cross-pollination between the Starliner and Louie's I was expecting something a bit more eclectic. I wish the owners and the staff well because they were so friendly but they really need to figure out what they want to be when they grow up. read more

In general, I've always found fusion restaurants to be overpriced and underwhelming. Perhaps it's because I can't quite appreciate the artistry it would take to blend food and tastes from a number of different culinary cultures--unlikely--or far more likely, it's because by attempting to combine different styles, what is served ends up falling between two culinary barstools. (Apologies for metaphor) Went to LouiE's today because I've been hankering after a cubano sandwich. The experience was fine, as the waitstaff were decently attentive and kind. However, the food was not quite up to snuff. My Media Noche Sandwich--essentially a cubano-style sandwich--came with fried plantains and a sauce that appeared to be a cream-based pico de gallo. The plantains were quite good, but appeared to have been dipped in too much syrup before fried. A combination of lighter frying/lighter syrup would have been helpful. As for the sandwich, it was disappointing. First of all, the pork loin was dry and in two thin layers. I would've preferred a thicker cut, moist, and with some garlic seasoning. Moreover, I couldn't taste the mustard and the cheese was American, not pepperjack as specified on the menu. Finally, the bread was a touch too thin, though this wasn't a huge problem. Overall, my feelings were mixed. LouiE's could be great for groups of 6-10 friends, but if their other dishes are as underwhelming as my sandwich experience, I'll be rather sceptical about going back there again. read more

So I had a coupon from the Entertainment book and thought, why not try it since I was in the area. First off we sat in a booth and the paint and cement walls was all chipped off. The male server was very polite and checked on us periodically. When the food arrived it looked delish. I started eating my sandwich, which wasn't bad. I go to open the ketchup for my fries and there was about 20 baby ants crawling under the lid and in the ketchup. I showed the lady serving she just shrugged it off and brought me another bottle. I was hoping for an excellent meal at Louie's fusion Grill. I did not eat good food or drinks. The food was not good period. The first time went I took a group of people to try. I can tell you that the Margaritas there might be the sweetest worst authentic tasting drink in Columbus. I wonder if they are putting orange juice in them. The best thing we had were the fried plantains. I had the overpriced fajitas, people in the group ate shrimp dish, and jambalaya. The service was very poor and the food took forever. When you have a two year old child you kinda want to get in and out. To top it off they would not accept my Groupon off of my telephone. I did not lean my lesson the first time and went back. The main reason is that I spent money on two Groupons. Shame on me for taking another group to this place. The food again was just not good. I had the Cuban sandwich thinking it was a no brainer, it was no good. The bread seemed stale and I was hoping for some pickle on the sandwich. The flavor was very bland. The rest of the group was wondering why I had brought them there... I told them because I was foolish enough to buy the Groupon. We did have one outstanding women working on staff. Now I have on unused Groupon and I will be heading back. I hope they can impress me this time so I can log back in and change my review. My wife and I get into arguments over whether to go to Louie's or Starliner Diner, but Louie's wins more often mostly based on convenience. They lack the kitchy cool interior and sometimes I'm just jonesing for the Creole Mac that I can only get at Starliner, but Louie's has them beat on size, cleanliness, parking, and patio seating. The food is generally about equal. Ropa Vieja is my go-to dish and it is always excellent. Almost every time the inlaws are in town, we go here for brunch and it never disappoints. From omelets to chilaquilles to hash, everything gets praised. Definitely, this is a place you should check out if you like good cuban food. read more

My husband and I decided to try Louie's last weekend. It's not far from our house and we wanted something new. I have to say, I was impressed! The decor is nothing fancy, but it has a nice, diner feel. They also have a full bar, which I did not expect. It was a weekend afternoon, but the restaurant was fairly empty. We were greeted promptly and chose a booth by the window. The servers were all very friendly, even offering suggesstions when we said it was our first visit. We started with chips and salsa. The salsa was very fresh tasting and we ate it pretty quickly! I chose the Ropa Vieja- one of their "most popular" choices according to the server. It's a cuban shredded brisket meal with beef, onions, peppers, black beans, rice and tortillas. It also comes with a few fried plantains, which were sweet and delicious. My husband had the Louie burger, which had chorizo and a guacamole spread and came with fries. The fries were standard, but hot and tasty. The burger was yummy and you could really tase the chorizo. I can't wait to go back and try some other dishes. I'm also going to stop back and try their breakfast one day! read more

A very disappointing experience. The drinks were unbelievably weak - I had three margaritas and they did nothing for me. The chips and salsa cost 2.79 when most places give them to you free. It wasn't even a chipotle level salsa but just pureed tomatoes with vinegar, cilantro and onion. I used a groupon but my bill was higher than expected. The waitress said that groupon is not good for alcohol. I asked if that was on the terms of groupon i used and asked to see it. she said no it is not listed as an exclusion on my grouppn but it is on the groupon website. I went to the website and it explicitly states drinks are discounted! She was either incompetent or lied to me. After reading how they have treated other coupon customers I suspect they are going under and trying to hang on. Not worth mentioning the dinner... Dry overpriced chicken. read more

Hit up LouiE's for breakfast today with the Ukraine Brain and a few other work friends as part of our "Open Breakfast Initiative" (OBI). The group had everything from Omelets to Huevos Rancheros, to simple pancakes, so we ran the range of "fusion" from traditional American to full-on south-of-the-border fare. I wound up getting the Machaca with Eggs. This dish is beef brisket with scrambled eggs, peppers, cheese mixed together, served with a generous helping of black beans on the side, and a handful of tortillas. The dish was excellently done, and service was good. Their coffee actually surprised me at how good it was-- it was not served at the temperature of the sun, and it was not overpowering. Overall, a tasty, quick, relatively inexpensive ($9.00 entree) breakfast that will at least last me until lunchtime. read more

My wife and I have driven by Louie's a hundred times and always said we should check it out. I have to be honest, I'm reluctant to try things that are located in strip malls but after this experience I should be more open. We arrived around 8:30 on Saturday and was pleasantly surprised that they were not busy. At first this concerned me about what I was in store for as I am usually expecting long waits for anywhere decent on a Saturday night. We started with an order of the Fried Plantains. They were good but could have been a bit warmer. My wife had the fusion pasta and I had the Southwest Linguini. Everything came out very quickly and was absolutely delicious! My only issue with my meal was the peppers could have been cooked just a little longer. My wife was full about half way through her meal which is awesome because that is what I get to have for lunch on Sunday! This was a very pleasant surprise and I can't wait to go back to try some of the menu items that I passed on this time! We may even hit Louie's II in Upper Arlington for lunch sometime soon! read more

My first visit there was a disappointment. The service was lacking and the food was ok at best. I wanted to give it another try thinking that maybe they were short handed or something. I was disappointed again and I'll not be going back. The beef in the dish I had was dry,tough and just not fresh at all. The dish was really impressive to look at unfortunately it lacked taste. Louie's is one of my go-to restaurants. The chilaquiles is excellent as are the veggie and tex-mex omelets. We always have the fried plantains and the Cuban toast is a nice change from boring "white or wheat". I have no idea why a few people rated this restaurant poorly. I haven't had a meal I did not like or a server that was not friendly or a meal that was not served in a very timely manner. When my parents visit from out of state this is the first restaurant they look forward to going to. Family owned, friendly, good value, and tasty (and large portions) of food. I do agree that the place could do with a bit of a makeover but that should not keep anyone away. read more

I love Louie's and frequently choose to go there over Starliner diner. The owner and wait staff are extremely friendly and personable and they remember you when you come in. My favorites are the fish tacos, plantains and for brunch the sweet potato omelette and veggie breakfast burrito. Chipotle Crab Chowder and Plantains are the two reasons to come here. I have been here numerous times and enjoy those two menu items the most. I tried a Cuban and my wife tries the Fusion Chicken and we both were very pleased with our meals. I would order this meal to go again. The to Go service was pretty quick for a Friday night as the food was ready in 15 minutes. I have eaten inside a few times too and I have liked it. I do remember that the service wasn't quite so quick inside on all occasions but that could be true of many places. We have ordered a few things here that I would not order like the Mofango Chicken which is very dry. That is the one I would say was the most memorable let down for me but I know one or two other things were a let down too. They have a decent brunch/breakfast to hit up if Starliner is packed. This place is almost never full so you can get in and get out faster than other restaurants as long as service is on its game. I have noticed that they are very strict with their coupon policy as they use to have a BOGO then in the middle of the year they switched it to only $7 off. Even though the coupon did not have the same limit on it and it was for the whole year. So I can see where other reliable Yelpers have complained about service could be true. read more

Last Friday for lunch I visited Louie's Grill in Hilliard. Louie's is built out of a small end portion of a strip center and has OK visibility from Cemetary Rd. There is a patio in the front yard and the entrance is in the back. Upon entering the restaurant around 12:30PM I was fairly quickly greeted by my soon-to-be server and was seated at a booth by myself. The interior reminded me of a cafeteria or plain diner, with carpeting and a bar with one television. The specials were written on a board next to the bar. On the menu, these specials were not mentioned, but then I noticed they were just regular parts of the menu. About four other tables were present in the fairly open large dining room. I started off with an iced tea and soon ordered a cup of chipotle crab chowder. The chowder soon arrived at my table. It appeared to be more of a bowl and I dug in. A creamy rich broth was surrounded by potatoes, celery, and onion and a hint of chipotle and real crab meat. There were no chunks of crab and the chipotle was not too spicy. A very hearty and tasty soup. After perusing the menu I ended up ordering fish tacos grilled. A few minutes later it arrived. I was given three corn tortillas filled with lettuce, red onion, a melted white cheese, grilled Tilapia and something that appeared to be a thin sour cream. On the side black beans over white rice finished off the plate. Upon eating the tacos I noticed that the Tilapia had a somewhat cajun seasoning on it and were a little salty. Some fresh cilantro and homemade salsa would have been a good addition. The dish was just OK. All-in-all I give my experience three stars. No lunch menu and the items added up for me. $2.25 for iced tea, $4.50 for chowder, and $9.99 for tacos, $21 with tip. Never offered any chips (which I didn't need anyway) and it was a little warm inside the dining room with the outside doors open. Good service, OK food, just an average overall experience. Nothing bad enough to send back, nothing good enough to really rave about. read more

Tried for the first time. Disappointing. I got steak tacos. Served on flour tortilla Instead of corn. Is that even a taco? Steak was way over cooked and really dry. Small portion of rice and black beans. Beans were very dry and not seasoned. Rice might have been ok but beans were served on top of rice so who could tell. my friend got a burger and sweet potato fries. she said the burger was good but the fries were so cold so soggy and so completely burnt they were inedible. They looked so bad she wouldn't even taste them. They guacamole is just smashed avocados. On the bright side they have great happy hour beer prices. read more

I ordered a shrimp quesadilla. The shrimp was very undercooked. The nachos we got as an appetizer were decent. This review started as a 3 star review for undercooked food. I sent my entree back. When the waitress brought me the check it showed $47. I questioned the waitress because we had one entree, an appetizer and a kids meal. No way those numbers added to $47. I added them up and they were $24 and change. She then argued with me until she added them up and realized her error. No apology or anything. The food really wasn't anything special. So, it's not nearly as eclectic as Starliner, in terms of decor, however I would have to rate this experience higher than our last few trips to Starliner. Apparently anything with the beef brisket is going to be amazing, as both me and my husband had brisket dishes and were equally satisfied, but OMG, the flavoring by far surpassed Starliner! The plantains were yummy, however the unexpected chips and salsa was good, too. The salsa was so fresh and oniony, and perfectly hot. And draft beer. 32 oz! Needless to say, we are full, happy diners, and the hubs says we didn't break the bank. :) Btw, the service was wonderful! LouiE's has a new menu, which worried me at first. I am a devoted fan of certain menu items...like the Southwest Linguini...and would have been disappointed if I couldn't get them any more. Lucky for me. All of my old favorites are still on there. Thus reassured, I was able to venture away from the SW linguini and try some new things. Last week was the LouiE burger. It has the addition of chorizo and pepper jack cheese to an already good burger. I am a firm believer that chorizo makes everything better...and I was right! Delish! They let me substitute the house salad for the fries. Definitely a fan of the dressing...sort of a "ranchish with salsa" thing going on... and it looked and tasted very fresh. This week I tried the Caliente chicken. (Hope I spelled that right.) This is a pasta dish and boy did it pack some heat! It was very tasty and filling, but unable to top my other favorite pasta dishes. If I had to rank them, it would be: *1* Southwest Linguini; 2 Fusion Pasta 3 Creole Pasta and 4 Caliente chicken. Would you believe that not everybody agrees with me??? My 17 year old son rotates between the Creole Pasta and chicken burrrito. CANNOT believe his lack of discernment. This totally disregards the "chorizo makes everything better" rule. But you know what they say, "different plates for different palates". Well, we say it at my house. As usual, the plantains were wonderful...fried perfectly. I'm already planning my next meal there. Think it will be either the pizzabread salad or the fish tacos. read more

Born and raised in Hilliard and this is always one of my favorites! Decor and atmosphere is nothing special but the food and service has always been great and I've been here MANY times! Chipotle crab chowder is always a must, I literally get it every single time. Always check out the specials menu! I've been going to Louie's pretty much from the beginning and I've never had a bad meal or service. You are promptly seated (sometimes by Louie himself) and everyone is always pleasant. The food is spectacular and I highly recommend the trying any of his Fusion dishes as they are all incredible. If you can get there on a weekend, hit this joint up for some great breakfast! What a great spot for some very original dishes. My wife and I split a Veracruz salad with grilled shrimp, and a plate of fusion pasta which has shrimp, chicken, andoulli sausage along with veggies and pasta and creamy tomato cajun sauce. We have been coming to Louie's since it opened! No b.s.... it IS THE absolute best EVERY.SINGLE.TIME!! THE best Margaritas!! THE best Fish taco's!! THE best queso & guacamole! Service is always and consistently outstanding! ...and truly the best corn chips.! We don't even know if they advertise but if you live anywhere near Arlington, Dublin, Galloway, anywhere in Madison County, Grandview or downtown you have got to check this place out! And if you live further away I promise you you will not be disappointed. Love to come here for business lunch meetings, Sat/Sunday brunch is like no other however they do serve breakfast all day long! read more
