If you have never enjoyed Basque cuisine, then you are missing out! The Basque region is a small area between Spain and France. They grow a lot of sheep. So get ready for some lamb. (Lamb is not really gamey. It is neither beef nor pork. It is delicious! Try it! Don't expect beef. Beef is on the menu.) Every meal is a three course meal. The wine is included. You get bread, a soup, salad, an entree and a dessert. It is served family style. Expect to sit with people you don't know. Talk with them! It is with a heavy heart that I leave a less than stellar review, 35 years in the making. *sigh* This restaurant in my family pre-dates my existence. We are Basque and the only time I've had Basque food is in the little town my family is from, Markina-Xemein. My aunt had her wedding reception here years ago and its been a regular post in my extended families Reno trips ever since. When I moved to Reno, I immediately became the envy of the family because I'd be close enough to have this delicious cuisine at my whim. Wanting my first time to be special, I waited 6 months until my father was able to make the trip to Reno. I locked in our reservations ahead of time. This is a family style restaurant in the most traditional sense, meaning that you are seated with strangers at the same table where you pass plates of food to one another. Great ambiance, great concept, loved it. The first course featured bread and a brightly flavored vegetable barley soup. My grandmother would have loved this soup! The second course was a tangy dressed simple salad alongside some bacon and leek beans as well as the spanish chicken with rice. The salad was much like the ones that are served at my aunt's house, the beans were so delicious and had such a wonderful depth in flavor. Ill discuss the chicken at the end of this review because I want to solely focus on the positive for now. Stay with me. We were also served some of the best French fries I have ever had! My dad had the rack of lamb which was to die for! The texture was perfect, the rosemary flavor was all through the meat, melted in your mouth. I cannot stress the mouthfeel, it can be really difficult to get lamb right. My fiance and I ordered the ox tails. Another amazing dish worth going back for, we joked about drinking the Bourgeois sauce it was served on. Dessert is optional which we did not indulge in so I have nothing to write about that. The reason I am rating the service two stars is because me and my fiance were served bloody chicken. When I quietly and kindly showed the waitress, the only thing she could ask was if it was ok to take our plates away. ....Uh, you don't need to be culinary trained and serve safe certified, like myself, to know you shouldn't eat off of a plate with raw chicken blood on it. Sorely disappointing in how she handled it though we still tipped a loving $45 in cash. What I would have liked to hear from her was an apology and offering a small discount. But no, she couldn't admit fault, she had no sense of customer satisfaction at all. Instead of going home and ruthlessly posting this review in anger, I reached out to the restaurant via their website hoping to discuss further before I posted photos of the bloody chicken they served us but here goes...after a week with no response. We came here on the feast day of St. Ignatius to celebrate his Basque heritage! This place has been on our list for a long time, I'm glad we finally got to come. Louis' opened in 1967 and carries on traditions including family-style seating and traditional homemade Basque food. I can see how people would knock down the rating on place like this if they came in expecting a regular restaurant experience. If you know what you're signing up for, it's a fun and unique experience to try! While the family-style seating is a bit uncomfortable since you sit at long tables next to people you don't know, I think it's fine because you are partaking in Basque traditions. However, be aware that it gets quite loud in here because of how close together everyone is sitting; it can be hard to hear your own friends across the table from you. Dinner mostly consists of a fixed menu, you just select which entree you want. Every meal comes with the same side items that are served family-style: red wine, french bread, soup of the day, Basque beans, salad, fries, a first course, and dessert. You can opt for the "no entree dinner" which just comes with the sides listed previously. However, know that you only get a little bit of each item since it's all family style. I'm not sure if they are bottomless refills or if you just get what is served? We were never asked if we wanted more of anything except for the first course (for us, this was a rotisserie chicken). The entree we tried was one of their daily specials, the lamb stew. I thought it was delicious! The broth was rich and flavorful. I don't have lamb very often, it was tender and went well with the broth and veggies it was mixed with. The dish itself was on the smaller side. Entrees that are meat dishes range from $36-48, so it's a little bit pricey. However, this does come with wine, all the sides, and dessert. We got ice cream with hot fudge for dessert. We did not get additional drinks, but they do have other wines to choose from, a full bar for cocktails, and the traditional Basque "Picon Punch" for only $7. Overall, I enjoyed this experience! It was quite unique to most other restaurants in the area. The main downside is how loud it can get, I wish the long tables were a little more spread out to help with this. Service can be kind of slow because of the family-style setup. We asked to speed things up when we realized we'd be cutting it close to an event we were going to afterwards. The waiter was super nice and brought out our check right away and even brought out dessert with our entrees so that we could get through it all quickly without missing anything. This is one of the hardest reviews I've ever done. I wanted to give it two stars, but the food was good even if I disliked the service and atmosphere. Apologies in advance for some of my photos. The lens fogged up on the inside of the case asnd it took time to clear. This dinner was planned for our final night in Reno. It was served family style--something I thought I wouldn't see again once I left the east as a teen. Everything was set except the main course. There were three choices--lamb, shrimp, and steak. We were brought bowls of soup which we ladled out for our table mates. During this time, we also received a tossed salad that could have used more dressing. Then came a dish of rice with chicken. We were also brought plates of French fries. Finally, we were brought our main course. I was handed a large platter with sliced lamb covered in gravy. Naturally, I took some. However, the server later told me that I had taken someone else's lamb because the main course was chosen and I had ordered shrimp. As it turned out, there was leftover lamb from our table so no one went without because of me. There were 38 in our party and we were at three or four tables in a crowded room. The noise level was high which added to my dislike of the meal. I expected we would have a hearty Basque stew or something different. Instead, we had a dinner I could get in almost any restaurant serving lamb save for the rice with chicken. I was glad when the meal was over and we could get out of the noise. read more

Two of us visited on a Sunday evening. And the place was quite busy. It does have its own parking lot but very limited in space. It is quite unique in its family style seating where you share a long table with other guests, assuming you didnt come in as a part of a larger party. You get to pick your entree and the dessert, but otherwise the other items are set. They brought out bread and butter to start us off. Bread was soft and fresh. The bread was followed by tomato soup, which was alright. It was followed by rice with chicken, salad, fries and basque beans. The rice with chicken was quite good. The salad and the beans were mediocre. I did like fries. I ordered lamb chops and my girlfriend went with sirloin steak, rare for both. The entrees were ok. Nothing to write home about. I ended with meal by ordering the $10 dollar cheesecake, which was decent. The pros of the restaurant is that the family style seating is something of a novelty in Reno. The service was good. And we liked the interior ambience. The meal wasn't cheap, at $93 for two. And we walked away finding the food themselves quite unmemorable. This Basque restaurant is a Reno institute. Located downtown it's not in the safest area and parking is a challenge but the food is worth the challenges. The interior is charming-feels like you stepped back into the 50's. Seating is at long tables, family style. Dinners come with a complimentary glass of red wine but there's also a full bar. Entrees include steaks, lamb chops and sweetbreads. We opted for the dinner with no entree and started with split pea soup. Subsequent courses were salad, French fries, beans and chicken. The servers will bring you more of anything that you ask for. French bread with butter is a great accompaniment to the meal. Complimentary dessert is choice of grapes and cheese or vanilla ice cream with chocolate sauce. It's a fun experience and I always meet interesting people there. Here's what you need to know about the experience: For a big group, definitely make a reservation. For just my husband and I, we were able to walk in and get seated. There's no typical hostess stand, so we awkwardly waited by the door until we finally decided to ask the bar tender--who was very helpful. If you're a small group of 2-4 people, you'll likely get seated at a long table with other groups of people. Basque food is all about family-style dining! So, you'll be passing around the salad bowl, the wine, etc. You do choose your main meat (and you can order a few to share). The moral of the story is: be prepared to make new friends. Basque food is especially good when you need a hardy meal and really want to spend quality time with friends and family. And I definitely recommend Louis' when you're in Reno. read more

I love oxtail, and this place is perhaps the only restaurant in town that serves this dish. My husband and I were seated next to a bunch of UNR alumni on one side and a couple from the bay area. Dinner dinner conversations were great, and it is always fun meeting and talking with nice strangers! The food is always good here, I love the chicken and beans that came before my oxtail. Had a fantastic experience at Louis' Basque Corner - my first time trying Basque cuisine. Dinner is served family style, which means you might share a table with other parties. It worked out great since I met some friendly locals. Everyone orders their own entree (or can skip it if they want), but there is bread, soup, salad, wine, chicken, rice, and fries to share. Those alone could be a meal if you want, but the entrees were the real highlight. I had the oxtails, which were phenomenal. Slowly stewed with wine and veggies, they were tender and full of flavor (similar to French boeuf bourguignon). What an interesting dining experience! You are seated and served family style, sharing the serving plates for all but your main course. My husband and I got the sweetbread (calf thyroid gland) and the sirloin for our mains and then indulged in the cheesecake. It's been awhile since I've visited Louis' but it's still one of the best choices in the downtown area. The kalimotxo was delicious while I waited at the bar for the rest of my party to arrive. The bartender was friendly and attentive. My friends grabbed picons and we headed to a table for dinner. I ordered sides only ( my favorite part of basque food) and the others ordered steak... one well done (no judgement!!!) We introduced ourselves to our table mates and welcomed bread, red wine and soup and salad course. It's the 1st time we've ever had to ask the others to pass the food, but they had never been to a basque style restaurant before. The beans and chorizo were yummy with plenty of chorizo. Then came the chicken and rice plate... plenty for everyone. Again we had to ask our table mates to pass the food. The server brought the entrees and fries. The well done steak was well done ( I cringed.... But there's a buyer for every hat...my dad used to say he'd just trot mine thru the kitchen and singe the hide off before serving.) we had to ask again for puff table mates to share the fries and wine. The waitress was back and taking away extra plates, while asking if anyone needed seconds on anything..... she was efficient, friendly and helpful. We had to ask for more wine but she graciously brought it and we only had to remind our table mates one more time to please share. Next came our dessert (it was my birthday after all). We came in for lunch as part of our 2023 #lovewhereyoulive tour of Nevada. It was a new experience for the kids and a new spot for all of us. The kids RAVED about the food - especially the soup, beans, and salad! They also made several unprompted comments about the great service. My sirloin was cooked perfectly well-done like I requested. This the only great basque restaurant in town when we had many and now we are down to one. Nonetheless I'm very glad this the last one standing in Reno. As was before this restaurant was and is always very busy and there's a very good reason that's the case. They have continued to serve wonderful food now as before. The full meal starts with a soup, I've had minestrone, barley and new england clam chowder before and they all don't disappoint. Then a simple but delicious green salad dressed in oil and vinegar, baked beans cooked with chorizo makes a great accompaniment for the salad. Next came a chicken and converted rice dish, I normally have my opinions of converted rice but I actually liked the way they cooked this. French fries came also, french fries the way it should be cooked crunchy on the outside and fluffy inside. Then came the main course that I ordered oxtail. All lunches served family style with the following: Soup of the day - split pea today with nice chunks of ham, one of the highlights of the meal. I would have preferred it a little more rare, but still very good, and of course I finished it 2 roast leg of lamb - I did not get to try this dish because I was just too full, but none was left behind either so it must have been good.
