So you can imagine how happy I was when they decided to open a love bird in Winter Haven just a few miles from my permanent office. I think this location is even better than the Lakeland location because it is a little bigger than the parking lot is much better. They still have that absolutely fabulous crispy fried chicken that is so delicious. I love that you can cater it to your personal spice level. I like mine medium, but my mom prefers hers with no spice. Their fried chicken stays crispy even when it gets cold. Sometimes I'll go and grab myself some lunch while I'm at work and then get some fried chicken to take home to my husband for dinner and it's still crispy and juicy and fabulous. I also love that they have a meal that was invented for me. My favorite thing to order is called, The my girl ain't hungry. It consists of one giant chicken, tender in your choice of fried or grilled with a side and a drink for eight dollars. It is the perfect portion for me. Now, when people come to visit me in Winter Haven, lovebird is always one of the places I recommend we grab lunch.

As for the food, I got the Brussel sprouts salad without goat cheese which was delicious . It was about the size of my fist for $13. I assumed it was more of a tasting menu. My mother got the gnocchi which was described as delicious but lukewarm in temperature. She loved the beet salad however and the side of sour dough bread. My dad got a 13oz steak with potato purée. His steak was good in flavor however he described it as a bit too tough, and could have been more tender. Since he is a retired chef of 40 years I value his input. My other family members ordered the egg yolk ravioli which seemed a bit of a strange combination but certainly worked out in flavor. The labneh that was with the beet salad was also paired and eaten with the sourdough bread which seemed to be a great idea. Unfortunately the bolognese pasta was not tender enough for my family's liking. If you like pasta that way then you should be just fine. Over all it was fine dining and good. If you would like to go to a place where the portions are a bit larger I would suggest another place. But this is a nice casual dining intimate place for any special small occasion. Last but not least, Beth our server was kind and sweet. She was patient and very accommodating with great table manner and should certainly be recognized for her gracious nature and hospitality.

So today, we decided to make a big detour for lunch on our drive back home. Howard has never made a better dining choice. Though not near I-4 at all, the food was worth the trip! After entering, we waited in a short queue to look at the menu & place our order. Since hubs had been romanticizing their fried catfish, we decided to share a dinner with mac & cheese and collard greens. And of course I wanted grits & fried okra, too. We picked a table and waited only a few minutes for our meal. I really don't know where to start with the food because everything was incredibly delicious. My only critique might be that the grits were not as piping hot as everything else. That aside, those grits were loosely creamy with a drizzle of butter, and made an amazing bite alone, but even more so with the fried catfish. I could not stop eating either, though hubs did help. Plus, the fry on the catfish, & also the okra, was perfectly crisp & light. Yeah, we finished the okra, too. The collard greens were simply outstanding. I loved that they weren't soggy or over-spiced. Hubs & I fought over the last bite. We also loved their mac & cheese! The flavor was decadently cheesy with a thick creamy sauce & a baked cheese crust. And I really liked that the macaroni pasta wasn't mushy. Our entire meal was fantastic. It's not much to look at as it's a dive and next to the corner Citgo station. We were hungry and tired of waiting to eat. So, the waitress pushed tables together for the 12 of us. Even though it took a little while to get our food it was absolutely delicious. A couple of us had breakfast which was fabulous and the rest of the group had BBQ and everyone of them raved about their food--especially the ribs, Mac and cheese, and fried okra. Our server, Mikayla, was awesome. We kept her busy but she was very kind, courteous, and attentive. When I walked in I was one of five people in the place but after a few minutes I was one of only two, but it was a Wednesday evening, so that's probs Ly why it was calm. It definitely wasn't due to the food, that is for sure. I had the clubhouse sandwich and it was very tasty. The fries were cooked just right and they were NOT over salted, thank goodness.
