I had read online that this was the place to go for corned beef. Well we tried the pastrami today and I'm sorry to say I won't be going back. The meat seemed very low quality and I was not impressed at all. Nothing like Slymans in Cleveland. I could have overlooked the pretty much filthy condition of the dining room and the sketchy people trying to sell you incense if the food was good. We ordered deviled eggs too and they put them upside down in the bag. There are so many great places to eat in the Detroit area, but this is not one of them.

Updated price menu but the sandwich's are definitely smaller

If you close at 2:30 why are the doors locked at 2am and the phone is off the hook. This is very discouraging and I don't like it

i have been a long time customer of lou's. starting going there in 9 th grade of high school. it was a real deli where people lined up to get a seat & a meal the corned beef taste like potted meat in a can and they try trick you into thinking a super duper or large sandwich is as advertised when they are deceiving you with much less. this what they tried to pass off as a super duper. i as not having this. requested my money back & they made another sandwich after having to ask fir management. this is the 2nd tie in a year and the 2nd location. i think this is fraud and embezzlement.

I tried to make it edible by adding sour cream, but who am I kidding? NEVER again, will I order loaded potato skins... Wtf I'M GOOD!!!

The portion of food provided is not adequate for the price charged. The food appearance is not the most appealing.

I always get the onion roll, well sometimes I get the rye, depending on the sandwich, but you can't go wrong.

I can't believe the place is still here after all of these years. There are 2 types of subs here: Italian, and "Other Subs", so you know that this shop sprang from the vibrant Italian community that once populated Detroit. The Italian Subs at Gonella's are ordered according to how many layers it builds up (which I think is a unique concept). These layered Gonella Italian Subs are layered with a variety of Italian meats (Hard Salami, Salami Cotto, Mortadella, Smoked Ham and Capicola), provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions & Gonella's homemade dressing. Soft or hard roll. Extras: Peppers (+.50) Cheese (+.50) - (Turkey is reserved for the "Other Subs). 6 Layers Meat, 1 Layer Cheese --- $8 8 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese --- $9 12 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese --- $12 14 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese --- $13 18 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese --- $14 The subs are heavy and delicious. Soft sub buns, tons of stacks of meat, lettuce and tomato or not. No one goes hungry after a sub here. Some deli spots tend to skimp on the protein, but not this place. My team members favorite is the Italian, 6 stacks. I usually will go for a turkey or chicken stack. They offer up to 18 stacks, haven't tried that yet.

Remember: Bring cash! Used a card, and the cashier had to type it in manually (it was nice of them to do that). Now for the food - We got a few meats--turkey pastrami, corned beef and a "wildcard" (I let the staff pick, and whatever it was it was good). We also got the special spices etc. I do prefer a more of an Italian sandwich on a hard roll, so I'm not sure the soft onion roll is for me. If you like a cold sandwich un-toasted and generally basic with a bit of a twist, you will love this! My husband and I enjoyed the sandwich (split it, and they put mayo on half at my request). It's a charming spot, quality food and I'm glad we tried it. Skip the spicy potato salad. It was bland, sadly.

I have been a big fan of corned beef and pastrami for years but my go to is on the other side of the city not to far from Dearborn, there is a couple other delis in eastern market area, one I like and the other I think is outrageous and the people there are rude, well today I was in the mood for a good corned beef on rye, got looking at a few apps I have and I come across Champs which is in Gratiot Central market where I go to buy certain meats to grill and smoke, but I never have gone there to buy prepared food, well I'll tell you it was Very Good ! The place is simple ,it is clean, they have a cool old Ford truck in there well the have half of it but none the a nice place , and the lady that waited on me was very cool, I decided I wanted Pastrami Indian it was excellent the , it was not greasy which is what I like to see it was heated just right and got slaw on it and my bread wasn't a soggy mess, I thought the price point was very good for my sandwich which also came with 2 pickles that were good and my drink, And the info I read is this is a small business this isn't corporate owned this is someone or family doing it cause they love please try support small business they need it now more than ever , I thought it was very good I hope you do as well.
