We are such big fans of this adorable bake shop. We get their cupcakes for everything -- birthdays, graduations, anniversaries, and treats. They also do VEGAN cupcakes -- that I swear taste non-vegan. I've tried a lot of vegan baked goods (my brother is vegan and his birthday extravaganzas are always difficult from a food perspective) -- and Love at First Bite's chocolate vegan cupcakes are handsdown the best. The staff is also so nice. Sometimes I bring my pup with me when I pick up cupcakes (he sits outside), and they always ask about him and remark on how much he is grown. It feels very much like a neighborhood establishment. And have I mentioned the Red Velvet Cupcakes? I have never tasted anything so mouth-wateringly delicious. read more

Haven't cupcakes jumped the shark a bit? I mean what can you do with them that hasn't been done already. Make them big, make them small, stuff them with things, Maybe put some fruit on them. Eh. It turns out that you don't really need to do much with them as long as your fundamentals are there. Good cupcakes, good selection, not too sweet and some unique flavors add up to a great experience. Most recently the fiancee ordered the vegan gingerbread and was amazed that it was actually vegan. She was somewhat upset that it wasn't around during her vegetarian/vegan days. For me the "Breakfast club": maple and bacon on a buttermilk base is about as good as it gets. Unique yet familiar, and as comforting as a good cupcake should be. I almost didn't find Love At First Bite as it's tucked away in a little shopping center, but I am glad I did. It's a tiny but cute storefront with a lot of different cupcake flavors to try. We picked up the coconut, raspberry, strawberry, and peanut butter flavors on our visit. The verdict was mixed on most of the cupcakes. Though my friend loves peanut butter the cupcake itself was lacking. And if you want a really superb coconut cupcake you're better off going with the recipe in Sunset Magazine from June 2006. The best cupcake? Strawberry. Most bakeries tend to just go with a strawberry frosting, but Love at First Bite provided a strawberry cake as well! The frosting was great with little pieces of strawberry in it, and the cake was light and moist with only a slight strawberry flavor. I do recommend a stop in, despite my review, just because it is the only bakery in Berkeley. It's a great treat, and there's the cutest stationery shop next door with it's own letterpress in the window. I'm sorry but I did not fall in love with my first bite. My friend bought me cupcakes from here for my birthday. I was actually really excited to try it because of all the reviews but I felt like they were just typical cupcakes. I think I had the green tea, red velvet, orea, and pretty in pink. Maybe it's just me but the frosting was just too sugary and not "thick" enough. I like my frosting to be rich and creamy and this place did not deliver. The cake was also too dry and not moist enough. The oreo was definitely not my favorite because it felt too artificial. My favorite one is probably the green tea and red velvet. Cupcakes are decent but it's not life changing. I think I would want to actually go to the store and pick my own cupcakes next time to try different flavors. read more

When is a cupcake worth $2.50? Answer: when it comes from this hidden bakery in Berkeley. Whenever my friend from Walnut Creek comes through the tunnel we always end up here. She has to have a strawberry cupcake. Cupcakes are their staple product. You can also find cookies, sometimes a pie slice and maybe a cake or two. They know their craft here, everything is made from scratch and the result is great. On my latest visit I stepped outside my comfort zone and ordered the Hummingbird cupcake. The Hummingbird is a delicious Southern cupcake with bananas, pineapple and pecans, topped with cream cheese frosting. Their cupcakes are always moist and are gone way too quickly. Of note, parking is a bitch and the shop doesn't serve coffee which is probably a good idea because there are 3 other coffee shops on the same block. read more

I'm a sucker for a good cupcake! My sis and I decided to go here after farmers market to get a late birthday cupcake for ourselves. We had been there before, but many years ago so it was time to refresh and see if the cupcakes were still good. They are!!! I got the red velvet and it was moist inside and delicious. I also had a bite of the gluten free chocolate coconut one and that was also very good. I only wish they had a few more gluten free or even some vegan ones. Had a stupendous craving for red velvet cake the other day. Went to a few places in town but no luck. Got to this place right before they closed. They were out of red velvets but there were two "hummingbirds" sitting pretty in the display case. Swooped up one of those along with some safetys: vanilla and chocolate. Got back to the car, picked up the hummingbird and said to the boy "no red velvet... wanna split this one instead?". I took the first bite and... let's just say i had thought the name of the place was a bit presumptuous but they are just telling it like it is. I regretted not getting that other sweet bird and also wanted to retract my generosity. Too late, boy fell in love too. Hence forth, we became obsessed ornithologists and went back everyday looking for that juicy fowl. The special flavors only come out once in a while so it's best to call and preorder if you can't do without a certain flavor. The red velvet and the matcha green tea are definitely the runner-ups. Giving a bad review to cute little cupcake place is the yelp equivalent to kicking a puppy in the balls... but someone has to do it. I didn't want to give a bad review because i don't think they really deserve one. it's such a cute little place, with all sorts of cute ideas for cupcakes and other desserts like their "Equal Justice" cookie. I had a tough time deciding between the Matcha Green Tea and the Blueberry-Lemon cupcakes; I went with the former. and it was very tasty. It was a bit on the sweet side, but I imagine a lot of what they sell is on the sweet side. Complaining about sweet cupcakes is like complaining about the addictiveness of crack. anyway, the cupcake was good, and the rest of them look like they're worth trying at some point in time... but who can afford?? My friend and I tried the red velvet, lemon pistachio, and chocolate. I had high hopes for this place, given all the positive reviews, and was especially looking forward to the lemon pistachio. Unfortunately, all the cakes were pretty dry, especially the red velvet - we both tried one bite of it and wasn't interested in any more. The chocolate was the only one that was at least half way decent, although I thought the frosting was a little too sweet. At least the cake was more moist compared to the other 2 that it didn't crumble completely upon cutting it. I almost got in a fight over the Red Velvet Cupcakes! It was close to closing and I had walked in at the same time as another woman. There was only 1 Red Velvet left. She quickly signaled the lady at the counter to help her. I said, I was here first and she said she takes precedent because she had called in her order. I said well, you cut me in line (like a 3rd grader), and the girl behind the counter said "okay, who was first..."I let the pushy woman go ahead of me, after making a smart comment under my breath and my courtesy was awarded with the last Red Velvet of the night...phew...that was a close one and the girl says: "See you got your Red Velvet Cupcake". (I came there weekly, until I moved to LA) I was embarrassed at my drug addict-like behavior, but happy I got my cupcake. They are that good! Really sweet little shop tucked into a corner of a weird grouping of shops above street level. It was towards the end of the day when I stopped in but there was still a decent selection of flavors left. I selected a 'Raspberries' since I'm a sucker for anything chocolate and raspberry flavored. Very moist chocolatey cake and a nice buttercream that was definitely made from real raspberries. I came here with a friend to order cakes for someone's birthday. They were a bit expensive but for what you get they're definitely worth it if you're in the market for something special. The cakes were BEAUTIFULLY decorated and they have almost any flavor you could imagine. We got a coconut cake and a carrot cake. I didn't get to try the carrot cake but I was told it was delicious. The coconut cake was AMAZING! Definitely the best I've ever had. While we were there we figured we'd pick up some cupcakes for ourselves (btw, I'm pretty sure you can order cakes by phone, but we wanted to go there in person to make sure they'd taste good). I tried the coconut (same as the coconut cake), the green tea and the red velvet. I was so impressed by the coconut one that perhaps I had too high of standards when I got to the other two. The green tea cupcake didn't taste like green tea at all and the frosting was so sweet it gave me a headache. Then again, this is coming from a green tea junkie so maybe I'm not as sensitive to the flavors as others would be. The red velvet was a little bit better but still not something I'd ever buy again. The cake part was nothing special and the frosting was just too much. That being said, they were adorably decorated. The service was awesome though. They were very helpful when we were ordering the cakes and they don't charge your credit card until you pick them up. The cake was moist but dense, had a chocolate edge to it, cream cheese frosting was slightly sweet but not cloyingly so, as well as the right finger licking amount of it. I was sold until i got to the second cupcake (later mind you, i swear). It was a lemon cake with pistachio butter cream frosting. Here's what we got this time: lemon pistachio - light & fluffy lemon cupcakes frosted with pistachio butter cream (Absolutely delicate, moist and a nice contrast between the pistachio butter cream and butter lemon flavor of the cake.) matcha green tea- a delicate green tea cake made with ceremonial matcha tea, topped with matcha-infused whipped cream (I have to admit, this one is my ABSOLUTE favor here or anywhere else, as I don't know of anyone else who makes green tea cupcakes) The Matcha cupcake definitely made my morning and then some. The delicate matcha infused whipped cream was neither too sweet or overdone. It was simply PERFECT. The cake itself was extremely moist (not crumbly at all) rich with the flavor of matcha and very decadent. If you haven't already tried this place, PLEASE DO! And if you're only limited to 1-2 flavors here, I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the Matcha and then their Pistachio Lemon, Pumpkin or Strawberry. Their cream cheese frosting is equally as good! Bottom line, you can't go wrong with EITHER Kara's Cupcakes in yuppies-ville SF or as a second choice, Love At First Bite in the gourmet Ghetto of the tree hugging capitol! ;) NOTE: Make sure you come in the morning and stick with only the said flavors. These cupcakes are amazing! And so many flavors available! I tried Coconut, Snickerdoodle, and Pretty in Pink (strawberry). Pretty in Pink definitely left the best impression, because the frosting tasted like real strawberries! Snickerdoodle, on the other hand, wasn't as impressive because it just tasted sweet (which I guess is basically what a snickerdoodle tastes like haha). I am always late. To everything. It's a curse. But the day I was supposed to go to Love at First Bite to pick up some cupcakes for my friend's birthday, it wasn't my fault. I left on time (well, almost). But I was coming from work on the peninsula, and seven cars decided to play tango on the San Mateo bridge, and I was already on 92 by the time the radio announced it. But I called Love at First Bite and pleaded with them to stay open 15 minutes later for me, and they DID. I got let in like a super VIP at 7:15, all for 6 mini cupcakes. And my god, those cupcakes were worth it. Deliciously sweet, but the frosting wasn't cloyingly, emptily sweet--it was creamy and rich and delicious. And the mini cupcakes are the perfect size for not getting crumbs and frosting all over the place. My other friend's birthday is today and I plan to get her Love at First Bite cupcakes too. EXACTLY WHAT THE NAME SAYS! It is truly love at first bite especially if you pick the right cupcake. The shop is really small but it has an open kitchen which is nice and offers some goodies such as gifts, trinkets, and cookies along with the AMAZING cupcakes. So far I've tried: Red Velvet- MUST MUST must absolute must try. It rivals the red velvet at Sprinkles. The cake bottom is so moist and perfectly matched with the cream cheese frosting which isn't too overpowering. LOVED it. Bunny Love- Again, SO GOOD! Moist, melt in your mouth lovin. One of the best carrot cupcakes I've ever tried Pistachio Lemon- This one was a little iffy because I couldn't really taste the pistachio but the frosting was delicious and had a distinct lemon tang. Peanut Butter Cup- I'd say its like a brownie-ish consistency cake with peanut butter chocolatey frosting. It was ok overall Vegan Gingerbread- THE BEST PART about this place is that it offers GOOD vegan options. I recommend trying this one. Yep. this place is the business right here. I started off with a mini vanilla cupcake. It was tasty---I measure most cupcakeries by their mastery or lack thereof of the vanilla cupcake. It's a simple cake that is SO easy to mess up! The cake at L@FB was moist and tasty and the frosting was a nice even buttercream with a good amount of sweetness and vanilla flavor. I continued on my merry way and then about 2 hours later I returned to buy 4 more regular sized cupcakes. I have issues. Here's what I got: Vanilla/Vanilla (because I just couldn't get enough the first time) Hummingbird: Which is one of my new favorite cakes in general and I was so excited to see it there. It turned out to be quite tasty too--a nice amount of banana and pineapple and a really divine cream cheese icing. Lemon with Pistachio buttercream: This one I have mixed motions on this one. I liked the lemon cake, but i thought it was a little dry, and I am not sure I even liked the pistachio in the frosting--it made for a really sweet flavor that I wouldn't get again. Coconut with coconut icing: this one was pretty good. I liked the coconut cake but the icing was just ok. Disclaimer: I ate this one the day after I bought it, so it might have been better if it was fresher. However with all that being said, I would totally come back. I tried the pretty in pink cupcake, the coconut cupcake, and two classic vanilla cupcakes (one topped with vanilla buttercream frosting and one topped with chocolate buttercream frosting). All these cupcakes were light, fluffy and moist. Even better than the cupcake itself, is the frosting! The strawberry buttercream (made with real strawberries) was smooth and velvety. The meringue buttercream frosting on the coconut cupcake was soft and had a citrus flavor. Overall, the frosting was well balanced with the cupcake - it was not too thick or too dry or too overpowering. Since the quality and presentation of the cupcakes at Love at First Bite Cupcakery & Bakery is definitely high, expect to splurge a little bit: a regular cupcake goes for $2.75 to $2.95 and "mini" cupcakes go for $1.25. Food: I sampled the Pretty in Pink cupcake and was satisfied by the intense strawberry flavor, the problem was that the sweetness of the buttercream distracted from the otherwise good texture and flavor of the cake itself. Things did not get any better with the Classic Vanilla, I'm sure there was some vanilla flavor in there somewhere, but again it was masked by the intense sweetness of the buttercream.
