Jollof rice with chicken and beef
    Cynthia J.

This is my first time eating at Marie's African flavors. Recently I have felt under the weather and have been craving some Caribbean comfort food but Houston doesn't offer the best Caribbean food and I didn't feel well enough to cook it myself. That being said, the next best cuisine is Nigerian food. The flavors and all the peppers they use help to make you feel better. I should have ordered some goat meat pepper soup but I already had some. I'm just sure the pepper soup is tasty here. I ordered the jollof rice with chicken and beef. I love the authentic way in which they cook their meat. They tastes very very nice with the delicious and flavorful jollof. Yes, the jollof was very nice and spicy. I'm pleased there is not a lot of oil. I also received fried sweet plantain with my order and they were yummy. Not overcooked or undercooked. Just right!

Wow, $15 well spent... if I was craving a whole farm of raw onions with a sprinkle of meat for decoration. I guess the chef thought the essence of soya would be enough to fill me up. Next time I want disappointment served in a styrofoam box, I'll know exactly where to go. Bravo!

That drum fish will have you dreamingggggggg Lord have mercy that food was amazing Best fish in houston hands down Usually I say no one can mess with Miami fish but Maries fish was amazing

Absolutely one of the best flavorful places that I've been to in Houston. The drum fish was amazing and very tasty! Everything was well seasoned and super delish! I can't wait to go back for more of everything I ordered.

    Beef Suya Platter

So disappointing, I've known about Marie's for years and have requested many times but the quality and service has gone down. The suya was dry and hard to chew.

Can't speak on the quality of service, but the take out was delicious! Definitely satisfied my craving for good Jollof rice.

This whole in the wall restaurant is pretty unassuming in its strip center but the food dances on your taste buds. The jollof rice was spicy and flavorful although the chicken was a bit on the dry side. The drum fish was huge with a great seasoning that was both spicy and citrusy. The fufu with chicken and vegetables was the highlight of the meal. I will legitimately dream about that meal.

This food has a horrid smell and taste.

I ordered the goat egusi. I asked the server if it was spicy and was told no. When the food came out it had such a horrid smell and the taste was no different. I'm a foodie and this was just sour. It was also very spicy. I immediately called over the serves to asked if I could please change my order to something to else and was told no. The service was slow as well. I would not be back and would not recommend to anyone. Don't waste your money like me. I give it zero stars.

Great food with amazing flavoring. The staff was very pleasant to talk to and shared a lot of info about their culture.

Jollof Rice with beef & plantains, rice was good beef was over cooked, spice level was spicy but perfect for my tasting 3.3/5

I'm not gonna lie, the couple times I've dine in I REALLY REALLY hated their customer service that was provided. The way that they treat us it seems like they're doing free charity work, so I just opted to either do take out or DoorDash. The last time I was there, I decided to do take out and I ordered the jollof rice with beef; it also came with some plantains & a side of spinach. The rice was good it was spicy but perfect for me, but if you don't want spicy I suggest you ask for no spice. I also love the side of spinach they gave me it really intensify the flavor in the rice, I wish I had more though. The beef was another story, it was cooked to hell to the point where I had a hard time chewing it; not gonna lie I threw half of the beef away and just ate the rice. My last complaint is I felt that they didn't handle my food with care because the presentation looked a mess, it doesn't look like the pictures on their page. Overall, it was okay but I wasn't impressed. I'll still come back since it's close to my house but It'll either be take out or DoorDash.

The steak was supposed to be tender, but it was tough and chewy, and I only received three tiny pieces for a $10 steak add-on. I ordered my meal to go and didn't realize until I got home that my order was incorrect. I specifically ordered it with jollof rice, but I was given plain white rice instead. I tried to give the restaurant a chance to make things right by calling them. Instead of addressing my concerns, I was told they were busy and to call back in a few hours. That was frustrating, especially after spending $40 on a meal and an appetizer. Overall, the small portions, poor quality steak, incorrect order, and lack of immediate customer service made this one of the worst dining experiences I've had. Unfortunately, I won't be returning, and I can't recommend this restaurant based on my experience.

We ended up getting a side of jollof rice because the goat meat plate did not come with any sides. I will definitely be back if I am on that side of town again. The four stars are because I wish they adjusted the spice levels. I like my food spicy and Bae who is Yoruba's spice level is not for this world! so the food wasn't as spicy to both of us as we would've liked. Everything from the stewed hen, to the rice, to the greens were all so well seasoned and I truly enjoyed every bite (8.5/10). The meat pie was also delicious with a savory filling and the pastry was thick and buttery but surprisingly not overbearing considering the pastry to filling ratio (8/10). Overall, I found the food to be very flavorful, well seasoned, and unique. My daughter and I actually ended up liking each other's meals more than our own, so we switched plates, which worked out well. We also ordered a few extra items, including wings and yams. The pounded yam was interesting and very different from anything I usually eat. It is probably not something I would go out of my way to order again, but I am glad I tried it and now understand a little better how it is eaten. The one disappointing part of the visit was the ordering experience. The young man who rang us up was polite, but he was unable to make any recommendations. He said he had been working there for about three months and still could not really suggest what to order. For someone like me, who is unfamiliar with this type of food, recommendations would have been very helpful. I would have appreciated some guidance on the most popular dishes, common choices, or what first-time customers usually enjoy. That said, the owner was extremely kind. She came out to our table, spoke with us, and helped explain how to eat some of the food we had ordered. I really appreciated that. She came across as a very sweet person, and based on her hospitality alone, I would come back to support the business. This style of food may not personally be my cup of tea or something I will crave often, but I respect the flavor, the care, and the local business behind it. I would give Bantu House four stars. It could have been closer to 3.5 for me personally, mostly because of the lack of ordering guidance, but the owner's kindness and the quality of the food pushed it to four.
