I was there a few days ago and ordered a bunch of things to go back to Austin with. The Eru was so good! I thought I was in Cameroon. I haven't been able to eat Eru this good outside of Cameroon. I ordered the drum grilled fish. $35 and it was huge and well seasoned. I got a plate of soya, fried plantain, and "batons de manioc". This is my first time eating at Marie's African flavors. Recently I have felt under the weather and have been craving some Caribbean comfort food but Houston doesn't offer the best Caribbean food and I didn't feel well enough to cook it myself. That being said, the next best cuisine is Nigerian food. The flavors and all the peppers they use help to make you feel better. I should have ordered some goat meat pepper soup but I already had some. I'm just sure the pepper soup is tasty here. I ordered the jollof rice with chicken and beef. I love the authentic way in which they cook their meat. They tastes very very nice with the delicious and flavorful jollof. Yes, the jollof was very nice and spicy. I am a customer and I have been there a couple times but I went there this afternoon at exactly 12:37pm (they open at 12:30pm) but I guess they were behind schedule which is ok but they saw me at the door and couldn't even come acknowledge that they were behind schedule, that wasn't even an issue another employee of theirs came to meet me outside , a guy came opened the door for her and didn't say a word to let me know the reason for not opening as described in their listing. I was just standing there like a fool. This is very rampant with African restaurants once they have customers they tend to just not care about customers service but you guys need to remember that without customers you don't have a business. This whole in the wall restaurant is pretty unassuming in its strip center but the food dances on your taste buds. The jollof rice was spicy and flavorful although the chicken was a bit on the dry side. The drum fish was huge with a great seasoning that was both spicy and citrusy. I ordered the goat egusi. I asked the server if it was spicy and was told no. When the food came out it had such a horrid smell and the taste was no different. I'm a foodie and this was just sour. It was also very spicy. I immediately called over the serves to asked if I could please change my order to something to else and was told no. The service was slow as well. Omggggg I just had this place for the first time lastnight and it was amazing the fish was cooked perfectly, suya was amazing, and the EGUSI ???? The best egusi I've ever had. I wont lie the service was slow but I will say if you have ever eaten at an African restaurant in Africa it is very common that the service may be on the slower side of things. They make up for it with their flavors! Order to-go if you don't wanna experience that . But man this food was really good with great flavors. I will definitely be back. I'm not gonna lie, the couple times I've dine in I REALLY REALLY hated their customer service that was provided. The way that they treat us it seems like they're doing free charity work, so I just opted to either do take out or DoorDash. The last time I was there, I decided to do take out and I ordered the jollof rice with beef; it also came with some plantains & a side of spinach. The rice was good it was spicy but perfect for me, but if you don't want spicy I suggest you ask for no spice. I also love the side of spinach they gave me it really intensify the flavor in the rice, I wish I had more though. The beef was another story, it was cooked to hell to the point where I had a hard time chewing it; not gonna lie I threw half of the beef away and just ate the rice. My last complaint is I felt that they didn't handle my food with care because the presentation looked a mess, it doesn't look like the pictures on their page. Rude as hell! I spent 10 mins asking the guy that supposedly takes the orders did the Suya Platter eith Plantains have more Suya than the Small Suya. They brought out the Suya and I tried it, it was brisket and was not spicy at all. It is not the usual suya that I get from Sabo and Afrikiko. They totally missed the mark.  Guy comes out  and tells me that I can't eat in there. I tell him that I was trying it, not eating there, as I know that you cannot dine in. Then he goes and tells another guy that comes from the back that I was eating. Wth is he gonna do? I asked the guy that takes the orders for some spicy seasoning for the so called Suya and he tells me that it is spicy. I tell him that it is not. He goes back and forth with me for a bit then proceeds to open up my bag and I stop him. He just stands there at my table and I had to tell him that he could go. So I asked the tattletale for some spice and he tells me that it is spicy. Really?? Idk what's wrong with these people. He then tells me to pay $1 for it. That is the best he can do. No sir. The fish is so delicious. Seasoned very well and the simple tomato and onion slices makes a difference and add something special to the taste. The hot sauce that comes with it is pretty hot but addicting. I usually go after church on Sunday so there is a crowd. The service, I give a 3 out of a 5 because it just depends on who's serving you. I've been to this restaurant previously and had a great experience. The owner who is a much older gentleman gave us great service. Unfortunately, at today's visit I had one of the worst services I've had here. We ordered margaritas which came out, warm & was a margarita mix but I was told the it was "pure margarita" instead of what we asked for. He waiter walked away mid question as I am not used to this food I had multiple questions. If this restaurant wants to be inclusive of all people to try to partake in your culture, it would be best to answer questions enthusiastically not make the customer feel like a bother for asking. Luckily, I was with my friend who was African and she was able to explain to me the menu, but that should have wel l been done by the server as well. Heard so much about this restaurant being one of the best african restaurants in the Houston area. On a balmy Saturday evening gathered the girls and headed to Marie. What a pleasant surprise! The place was busy and bustling, not enough where one felt uneasy with the amount of people in an enclosed space. The staff all wore masks and gloves, the patrons as well . Ordered fish chicken plantain jollof rice all to be washed down with a bottle of sweet red wine. The food was DELICIOUS..!! The server was polite, attentive and patient. The DJ was playing very nice music at comfortable levels where one could enjoy a conversation and groove to the Afro beats. Will I return to Marie? Perhaps. Will I order take out? Yes and a thousand times yes. Is this one of the best african restaurants in the H-town area? So far it's got its work cut out for it. Must continue to visit to be able to really judge . I like Marie African Flavors but Friday 2/26/21 my Jollof rice was so salty and my suya was nothing but fat thrown in with a few pieces of beef I asked if they would give another one and she very rudely refused and only offered an apology,an apologyis great but edible food would have been better. I won't be returning and I'm a long time customer either they are reserving the best food for Native Africans and not African Americans or someone doesn't like owner and is trying to sabotage her either way she just lost a very good customer.
