I really wanted to love this coffee truck. The guy serving us was honestly one of the highlights of the experience. He was a refreshing dose of classic New York energy - loud, passionate, opinionated, and clearly proud of where he's from. Between the personality and the music playing, the whole setup had a fun, lively atmosphere that immediately caught our attention. There was a line when we first walked up, but when he stepped away for what he said would be a quick three-minute break, most of the customers left. We stuck around because we genuinely wanted to give it a try. Unfortunately, the coffee didn't quite live up to the experience. I ordered an Americano, and it tasted very, very watered down. We paid with a card without any issues, though I know some reviews mention no cards. That said, the personality and atmosphere were enough that we'd be willing to give it another shot. We visited their food truck located in Soho and there was a short line on a Saturday afternoon. The wait wasn't bad, about 15 minutes. We got their signature Love Mocha Drip, which is chocolate with coffee for $5 in size large. The drink was decent but not served warm enough. The staff was kind of cool and reluctant. There was a sign that shows credit card is accepted. However, the staff told us they only accept cash or Venmo when we paid. read more

The thing I have probably missed the most during this pandemic has been coffee shops. The simple joy of reading a book, tackling that last minute project on your laptop or having a mid day break with a friend is something I will NEVER take for granted again. I stopped by after my daily AM run and got there right as the shop was opening. I ordered my usual Iced Coffee with Sugar Free Flavored Syrup. The storefront is cute and the counter-person was friendly and helpful. The back of the shop looked like it had comfy couches and tables, making it a new spot for me to keep on my radar for future remote working. As a sucker for sugar free syrup, this place is great because they had about ten flavors, which is rare, apart from bigger chains like Starbucks. Nothing wrong with them, but I prefer to support locally and this will be a frequent future favorite. read more

I was early to meet my husband for dinner in Astoria and looking to kill time when I encountered The Love Street Cafe. I usually only get tea, so I've developed the habit of asking "do you have a credit card limit" before I order, so I don't get caught unable to pay. The really sweet barista told me the cafe's philosophy is all about love so if I didn't have cash, I could just "pay next time". I think those kind of good karma business ethics are awesome! I'll def be back to pay for my cup and leave a nice tip! I sat in the spacious back garden area. Furniture was a bit dirty, and I couldn't find a free WiFi that seemed to belong to them, but since I was just there to kill time I didn't really mind! A few years back, who would ever think that people will pay a lot of bucks for what is basically flavored water? Well, I am one of these people who are addicted to coffee so much that I've been invited to a new money-making venture- rehab for coffee addicts. :) I was out on a stroll when I spied the orange awning of NYC Love Street Coffee. As I walked in, the server greeted me and chatted me up. According to her, they just opened about three (3) weeks ago and that they do have a coffee truck in Manhattan. I like the fact that they roast their coffee beans in-house. Although she invited me to try the house brew and I did taste it, I decided on a cappuccino since it was still early in the morning . The cups are a lot bigger than the regular 8 oz and are priced at $3.00. The coffee was very robust and would probably not be appreciated by those who prefer a gentler blend. They also had some sweet baked goods but I reserved trying them for next time. Considering its proximity to the train station and the server's promise that they will have Wi-fi soon and that the backyard will be open, NYC Love Street Coffee is a welcome addition to the stretch of Steinway. I so badly wanted to love this place. We found out about them randomly one day while walking by Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Their food truck was there, and we ordered some drinks to keep us warm while we walked around the Park. The drinks were amazing. This was quite some time ago, and since then we've come to the Astoria store a few times. I hate that I don't love this place. It's so very conveniently located and the staff is generally very friendly. They have a decent, cozy space and they even offer small bites. But it's a coffee shop. And I need to remember the coffee. I've tried a few of their coffees now, and even some of the food. My conclusion is still TBD because every time I've ever had a drink from them, it tastes absolutely nothing like the last time I had it. I'm a big fan of all kinds of coffee- I would never ever discriminate against any coffee. It's very, very hard to make me not like coffee, I mean, I grew up drinking Fay Da bakery coffee- that stuff is BURNT beyond belief. (don't worry, I know better now). But NYC Love Street is lacking a major point for me- consistency. One day, my latte is ultra light with no flavor. The next there is too much sugar and barely any milk. One time, I tried the hazelnut latte and was given a drink so thick with simple syrup that I couldn't even drink it. I ended up throwing out the entire drink as I walked into the train station downstairs (mind you, the previous time I tried the same drink, it was actually decent). The food isn't bad, but they don't always have ingredients. They offer bagels and cookies, but neither tasted very fresh, even earlier on in the morning. Came here Friday when it was freezing!! So I decided to get something hot and warm up a bit from the cold. I got the love hazelnut mocha and my boyfriend got the love chocolate cocoa (hot chocolate) The staff made the hot chocolate first and I saw that she steamed the milk or something and I was like whooaa wtf?! (good wtf lol) Anyways when we got our drinks I took a sip of mine and WOW!! the taste was great. My boyfriend's hot chocolate was the best!! I don't usually like hot chocolate since most of the time it's always powdered /nestle kind and you're paying for it!! The hot chocolate here was deff not nestle , it was so yummy and not super sweet. Just delish!! I really want to get it next time when I come in. The price were great!! This is my go-to Astoria coffee place when I want to grab a coffee and walk around the neighborhood. Their staff is quick and their iced coffee is STRONG! The location is great if you're on your way to the R train. I haven't tried any of their food yet, but they have some interesting combinations for their sandwiches. The espresso drinks have been a little inconsistent. My husband ordered a cappuccino that was heavy like a latte, and he got a latte that was light like a cappuccino. We've had a couple of experiences where the barista didn't greet us, or even make eye contact. But we've also had several great experiences, where the barista remembered us AND our drink orders. I'll deal with the few inconsistencies, because the good stuff far outweighs the not-as-good stuff. read more

I have walked by this place numerous times in the past year and just stopped for the first time today. I always complain that Astoria (especially compared to neighborhoods in BK) is really lacking in the independently owned cafe department- but Love Street Coffee might be the solution to that problem. The barista was really sweet and efficient. I ordered a large chai latte- and it was actually LARGE, not skimping there on the size- so much so in fact that I almost regretted not getting a smaller size. And it was only $4! And most importantly- delicious, totally worth it. It caters to the lazy/busy passersby and allows you to order right from the window facing the street- can't get much easier than that. read more

five stars BUT !!! Okay so I went for the first time last night (12/28/2018) and absolutely LOVED it here. The woman behind the counter was very nice if a little exhausted and the seating area is very comfortable and very quiet so you can get work done here. I got two coffees and a snack for a reasonable price. Here is my issue with this establishment despite the 5 stars. I went back today, (12/29/2018) in the afternoon and this time there was a man behind the counter (I'm told there is usually a male employee working by my friends who go here) and I bought an iced coffee and was charged $4.50 which I think is very high for a house drip with almond milk (50¢ extra for almond or soy milk substitute). I like my coffee very light so I asked the gentleman to add a lot of milk and he said it would cost me 50¢ extra on top of the original 50¢... odd but okay. I like my coffee light and I'm allergic to dairy so if I have to pay an additional dollar for my preferred coffee, I can live with it. When he handed it to me the coffee wasn't completely mixed, so the top was lighter than the rest, and it just happened to be the perfect color that I wanted. So at this point I paid my $4.50 and went to sit down and I mixed my coffee all the way only to find it still was not nearly light enough. I already paid nearly $5 for a large iced coffee so I wanted to enjoy it. As such, I go back to the counter and ask for more milk to be added and am told it would cost me an additional 50¢ for more milk and at this point I'm shocked. Apparently, you are penalized for wanting a very light coffee, which I've never experienced before. I told the gentleman that I don't believe this policy is fair and I don't see why I have to pay 50¢ extra because my coffee wasn't my preferred color. He explained that it's like if a customer asked for a refill, he would have to charge them for it. Understandable but I was just asking for a tablespoon of milk. He let it slide. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that they have exceptional coffee, but a pint of almond milk at nearly every store costs at most $3 and if I have to pay 50¢ for every tablespoon of almond milk... this definitely won't be my regular coffee spot. TL;DR Angry and screaming manager/owner ruins experience and entire view of place. I've been stopping by probably once every two weeks or so for almost two years. The chai latte is really quite nice. (Though their regular coffee gives me a bad stomach ache for some reason.) I'm not a huge fan of the cash only policy, but I tend to have a twenty on me, so it's not a big deal. However, I had the most horrible experience I have ever had in any establishment. I came here with a friend to catch up on a Saturday evening over a couple of chai lattes. The girls at the counter were very helpful and got us our drinks pretty quickly. We went into the back area where there were about 4 other people enjoying their drinks, and quietly talking. We'd probably been there ten minutes when we hear some man screaming from the front of the cafe. Something about that he was sick and tired of her (one of the baristas) wanting more money and going on and on about her being ungrateful. I'm assuming she had asked for money to cover the difference between their tips and minimum wage. He was screaming and hitting things (it sounded like he was smacking the bar, but from the back we couldn't see). The six of us in the back are all startled and one guy gets up to check on the situation. The guy who went to see what was up comes back (presumably after some choice words?) and the screaming has stopped. My friend and I leave within ten minutes and things are decidedly tense in the front of the store, but I made eye contact with one of the baristas on the way out and she seemed to give me an "I'm okay" look in response. I will definitely not be supporting an establishment that thinks it's okay to treat their employees that way. (Particularly in front of customers. It makes you wonder how much goes on behind the scenes.) read more

Mmmm . . . sometimes you need a little lovin' from the street. NYC Love Street Coffee is perfectly situated to get all the commuters because it's right by the Steinway stop. It's a teeny tiny place, so it's meant to hit the scurry-in-and-grab-a-cup-of-joe crowd. The filter coffee was strong and tasted fresh. I rarely get filter coffee because 1) it's usually weak and 2) it's been standing around for a while. It wasn't the case at NYC Love. Perfect for the mornings when you're in a hurry and can't wait for the slow drip coffee at Kickshaw. Not to mention, it's a whole lot friendlier to your wallet. read more

Two words: Kickshaw Shmickshaw. Let me begin by saying that I moved to Astoria in the leap year 2000, the year of the dreadful Y2K scare. For over a decade, I trudged through the diversity of Astoria, past friendly hordes of "holas, yahsus, Bom dias and ciaos," searching in vain for a decent cup of coffee to no avail. The only redemption was a plethora of cheap diner coffee everywhere the eye could see. I sipped and slurped and satisfied my caffeine addiction (my only vice!) forgetting the flavorful cups of joe I had savored in parts of Brooklyn, Seattle, San Francisco and other areas of the world where annoying young white hipsters have time to brew deliciousness. This became normal for me. What a simpleton I had become! And then one day everything changed. As I emerged from the subterranean darkness of the Steinway R train stop, a familiar smell brushed my olfactory receptors: it was clear air outside the grimy city, it was visiting my father in San Francisco as a child, it was the freedom I felt when I quit my dreadful job at Chase Manhattan Bank: it was real coffee. After a few moments, I realized everyone was staring at me because the aroma was literally causing me to levitate in the air and be pulled toward it like the Millennium Falcon to the Death Star. My body hovering in a horizontal position, I found myself in front of Love Coffee. After some trial and error, I figured out how to stand on my feet again and I walked up to the window to order the best coffee I have yet to find in Astoria. Everyone thinks Kickshaw is the best. Of course it's great but Love Coffee is just as good (it tastes a lot like MUD Street Coffee), it's cheaper, and they have a full menu (including a grilled cheese sandwich half the price of Kickshaw's staple sandwich). The ladies working the counter were very friendly and the service was fast. The only downside is that they don't sell bags of coffee to bring home. Love Coffee, if you are reading this, please consider this addition to your services. Unfortunately, I live three avenues and eight blocks from Love Coffee but every time I take the R train at Steinway, I'll be tempted to buy a cup no matter what hour of the day. read more

I kept wondering to myself if I had time to stop at Dunkin, after all, those extra few steps to get there are crucial. I decided to go for a cappuccino since this serendipitous encounter called for something more than just a regular coffee, and a toasted bagel with butter. I kid you not, my order was ready within 3 minutes, cost me a whopping $5 and change, with the friendliest customer service I've ever received on a Sunday morning. I don't know what this owner was thinking putting a cafe in this location. To the north is Little Egypt with all the coffee shops and hookah lounges you can imagine, to the south and east is a desolate and abandoned stretch of Northern Blvd. with South American restaurants peppered in; right around the block from it is a Panera. So the owner must've lost a bet and thrown a dart at a map or something because this location is pitiful. This place is very, very small. It's good for a pit stop on your way down to the R train (it's right next to the mouth of the subway), but in terms of sitting down for lunches and coffee drinks, you might want to head to the Panera for a more complete dining experience. Their food menu is not too extensive or elaborate from what I remember. I believe peanut butter and jelly was on there, for example. But the reason I gave this place 4 stars is because they have a lot of great coffee drinks and that their beans are quite good. I ordered an iced latte, which was not their most creative drink, but I believe a cafe that can do that well can do a lot of things well. If you're going there for a quick fill-up of some good drink, which I assume most of you are, then go to this place. Cute baristas, good feel (Christmas lights, indie rock, whole nine), and good drinks. Go guys. You know what's up. Panera doesn't need your $ when all you need is a lil' love. read more

i was craving a "fancy-coffee-while-reading-a-good-book" session and figured that Starbucks would be full of people, so I finally decided to try Love Street. It was nice and quiet - perfect! A little too perfect... I decided to get a mocha and sat down in a seat in the back. Could it be? A moment of peace? A moment, yes - but a very brief moment. Less than a minute after I arrived, a bunch of people came in and a few of them sat down. I heard someone say 'it's like a library in here' and the music was promptly turned up. With no further hope of ever concentrating on my book, I decided to leave. I would have gone to the library but it's usually loud (and extremely smelly, just saying), so no option there. I tried the mocha on the way home and it was very bitter. I saw it being made - a very thick brown goo with some liquid added to it - so I'm not sure what I was expecting it to taste like. I wouldn't mind going back to try their food, but I think I'll stay away from the coffee. And I've learned my lesson for trusting that anywhere in Astoria is a quiet place, so if I ever come back, it won't be for the atmosphere. I have a love/hate relationship with the Love Cafe. I think it's a cute little spot on Steinway St. to get affordable drinks and sandwiches, but there's a gap in how they appear and how they actually are. I've bought several drinks here in the last year and the truth is: you never know what or who you're going to get. Some of the girls that work there are very nice and will have a conversation with you, while others are rude and bitch at you about paying with a $20 bill and take the customers inside first even though they came in AFTER you. When it comes to the drinks they offer, either you're lucky or not. I've gotten chunky Vanilla Chai lattes from here (as in the powder didn't dissolve all the way, which makes for a very unpleasant drink) and Iced-lattes with grinds of coffee at the bottom. Other times, I've gotten great drink orders but my point is that there's a constant inconsistency on how they make drinks and how they treat their customers AND how they maintain the small inside. Sometimes the music is loud and the bathroom doesn't work, and other times that is not the case. I keep going back because I'm really hopeful about it. read more

Sweet, warm, friendly and great prices. NYC Love Street Coffee is my go to spot when I need a quick fix before I hop the train to work. The staff is insanely friendly and accomodating. I'm always greeted with a smile, even in the ungodly hours of the morning. As for the coffee, it's pretty good & strong enough to help me survive another day! Prices range from $2-$4 depending on what you order. My favorite is the Mocha Drip which is just right without any sugar. They even have a couple of fruits, snacks and sandwiches. There's a couple of seats and tables in the back if you have some time to enjoy your goodies. There's usually music but played at a tolerable level for the morning. Just keep in mind the little shop is cash only! I love this place and the coziness of it all. I love how it's never crowded, just 1 or 2 people in line and you're on your way. I highly recommend this coffee place during your mad dash to the Steinway M/R train station in the morning. I definitely stop here before work a couple times a week =) Keep it up! read more

Their smalls are equivalent to a grande at Starbucks at half the price! Don't let the outside fool you. There's a large hidden room on the inside that's very cozy and often quiet. I just moved to the neighborhood about two months ago, and I needed to find a place to read in a café that was nearby. I used the magical Yelp filters and found this coffee joint right on Steinway near the M/R line. At first glance, it looks more like a food stand than a café. A very smart strategy for the coffee drinker on-the-go. The location is convenient and so I am sure that these guys get pretty steady business in the morning. My arrival was a bit later, around 9:30 or 10:00 AM, and it was considerably more quiet. In fact, I was the only customer in the café. Oh, I forgot to mention, there IS an inside area to order from where you can also have a seat to enjoy your cup-o-joe. The décor was kind of "blah" and the seats were not fancy. I was also a little perturbed by the lack of real estate on the tables. I was going to pull my laptop and my book out, but I barely had room for the book (granted, it was literally a SERVICE MANUAL, but I digress). If there's one thing going for this place, it's the service. The barista was a very friendly young girl, probably in her 20's. Personable and kind. She was probably the best thing about the establishment. When I saw it was cash only, I sighed a bit and looked in my wallet. I had a $5 and a $1, and my coffee was $3.75. I wanted a muffin, but my morning brain thought that I didn't have enough money, as the delicious-looking muffin was $1.25 and I didn't have a quarter. So I moaned about not even having one single quarter and said I'd just get the coffee, and she said she could throw me a bone and give me the muffin for a dollar. When I gave her $6, she gave me $1.25 back...and I realized that I DID have enough money all along. I insisted on giving her back the quarter but she said it was okay, and so I promised her I would be back a second time. Now Yelpers, don't expect that to happen every time you're short on change, as that would be horrible business practice. But that's the level of service that these guys and gals provide. If I were straight, it would have been love at first sight. Good thing I'm not, because I looked like a bloody mess this morning. All in all, I had a Cinnamon Latté which was "meh" but the muffin was great. I would come back again and give it a second whirl. It's my local coffee shop so I'm lucky it's a good one. Nothing better than running in before or after my gym session and grabbing a quick chai zing and a banana as I romp back to my apartment. Great neighborhood addition to the "ghetto furniture store" wasteland on Steinway Street. The coffee and lattes are tasty (sandwiches are decent too) and they have a lot of different milk options (whole, 2%, skim, soy, etc). There is an order window from the street and the back seating area/lounge is super funky. The drip-paint floor and oddball chachkies add to the charm. Very unpretentious and steps from the subway.
