Windshield replacement isn't exactly the most exciting thing to shop for or my favorite way to spend a morning. But when a rock flew off of the 805 southbound and smashed into my windshield, leaving me with ringing ears and my windshield with a spiraling crack the size of a volleyball, it became an immediately necessary evil. ~ ~ ~ ~ The Research ~ ~ ~ ~ I called around several places and had the following experiences. - SafeLite quoted me close to $300 for a factory replacement. I told them I'm looking for somewhere less expensive, the lady thanked me for considering SafeLite, end of call. - Another "Budget" place in El Cajon quoted me around $225 and pressured me to set up an appointment right then, so i did. - Low Cost Auto Glass returned the message i left them and quoted me $150 after tax out the door. I asked them to make me an appointment and they did for the next morning, and quoted me an hour to finish the work in. - I called back the Budget guy to cancel the appointment and he started trying to haggle and pressure me claiming that everyone but him uses some cheap glass that is not safe or that they wouldn't replace the sealants and it would leak. Hmmm Mr. Budget, you just confirmed for me that I'm dodging a bullet by not going with you, thanks but no thanks bu-bye. - Quickly did research about 'generic windshields' to reaffirm that i did not make a mistake - and found that all auto glass manufacturers have strict requirements enforced by a US Agency. Further, I read that there are only a handful of manufacturers here, meaning that it's likely the same product i would be getting as a "factory replacement" just at a lower cost because they aren't buying use of the car company's brand/logo. ~ ~ ~ ~ The Work ~ ~ ~ ~ Showed up the next morning at my appointment - they got me in quickly and told me how to get to the nearest starbucks. 45 minutes later (15 minutes sooner than i expected) I get a phone call that my car is ready. I walked back and cashed out for exactly $150 after tax, as promised. And that was it... no frills uneventful... less time/energy spent getting the actual work done than it was to research it. Service was courteous and friendly - not starbucks friendly - but efficient and polite. The windshield is clean and pristine... we've been through several rain storms and no sign of leaking.... i've gotten hit by several loud rocks with no chipping, so it doesn't seem inferior in quality... I mean what do you want? It's a frigging windshield. It shields the wind (and rain, etc.) and it hasn't cracked yet. It does its job just the same as the original one did except this one doesn't have 7 years of chips and nicks in it like my old one did. All in all I'm happy with my decision. Hours are 8:30am-5pm (NOT 8am-4:30pm). Most jobs take about an hour - or less. After market glass seems to be about 1/3 the cost of ordering from the car manufacturer/dealer and is usually just as good, and any coupon you might have will further reduce out of pocket cost but they can probably order and install whatever you prefer and are willing and able to pay for. They prefer appointments but if you just want them to look at what your car might need and give you and estimate, just show up - and if you are lucky, they might even be able to take you right in. This place has treated me and those I've sent here very well. I haven't needed them for a long time but when a woman near to me in a parking lot asked for help after her car was broken into, this is the place I told her to go - and they were able to take her right in and replace her broken window (without waiting). When my door window started sticking when rolled down with the door closed but not when open, this is where I brought my car to have it looked at. They were able to find the problem (which had to do with the door itself and not the window), and find a way to resolve the window opening issue - at no charge (even though it took about an hour to take the door panel apart and remove a piece and reassemble it). They also recommended where to go if I decide to replace the door (or get the broken piece welded). Since almost everything works just fine, I'm not in a hurry to do either, but am glad to now know where else to go if needed - and what the real problem is. Replacing a car (front, door; side, rear, moonroof) window is seldom cheap - but doing at this place will probably cost you less than anywhere else you might go - plus they not only do good work quickly but are people you can trust who will treat you well - which is in many ways even more important to me. read more

Just another ordinary day...going to lunch...park the car start rolling up the window and the window won't budge!!! Great not again. The last time the window regulator broke it cost $300 to fix, and that was only 3 years ago. I was determined to find a good deal this time because I don't feel like being put out of $300 every couple of years for a darn power window motor and regulator. Found this place thanks to my fellow Yelpers, and I'm so glad I did. Called Low Cost Auto Glass in the morning, made an appointment for noon and had the car ready to by the afternoon just in time for school! These people are very honest and up front. They got the part from Honda and it was $172.00. We talked about getting it possibly online and having it installed there but the manager told us parts you buy online are made of cheap materials and will break again easily. It would cost about half what we would pay Honda, but at this point I don't want to see it break again because I decided to go cheap. Another thing with Honda power windows, you have to by the motor and regulator as a unit, not separate like most other model cars, another reason why the darn part was so expensive. So we decided to go with the Honda part and were charged $85 for labor. We felt comfortable with these people, and new we were getting a deal. I later found the invoice to when we previously fixed this window at a different place and they had charged us $70 for the part and $180 for the labor!!!! That let me know right away that they had used a cheap part and jipped us on the labor. If you have any broken windows or like me broken power window, this is the place to go!!! They guys at the shop were very nice and upfront, but I guess I was expecting too much. I had purchased a groupon, but when it comes to auto repairs you never end up getting a quality repair at a discount. The clerk suggested getting the windshield replaced before he even saw the damage. I had a small crack in my windshield from a rock that struck the driver's side. The impact left a quarter sized crack. When I checked in, the desk clerk let me know that the damage would still be there after the repair, but it would be less prevalent. I had him check it out and he pointed out that there were two impacts and that they would only cover one. There weren't two impacts. It was one rock that obviously was jagged and it left two marks when it struck. The second mark was still on top of the first, but they left it untouched. The final product was slightly thinner lines and they left the impressions left by the physical impacts untouched. There really was no point of going there in the end. It was a waste of money since I still have a crack right in my field of vision . I've never heard of a glass repair place that can't repair the glass. It was nothing like he safelight commercials where they make it look like the damage never occurred. That's what I get for using groupon. read more
