Lowerline took over the space that was Mrs Dorsey's Kitchen about a month ago, adding yet another hip niche restaurant to Washington Avenue. With Catfish down the road on Bedford, and plenty of Carribean restaurants around the block, one might ask: Does Crown Heights need another place that serves po' boys and gumbo? Yes. Why would you even need to ask that question? My girlfriend and I visited Lowerline a few days ago for my birthday dinner. The owner -- who shucks oysters behind the bar -- greeted us and gave us great service and conversation, and our server provided the same. We ordered the oyster po' boys and the gumbo, both of which blew us away in terms of flavor and portion size. The oysters -- Big Rocks -- tasted fresh and needed nothing more than a squeeze of lemon each. Lowerline has made great use of the small space provided to them. There aren't many tables in the front, and the bar only seats about seven or eight, but it's not the kind of place where you'd have to contend with a crowded bar or long wait times... yet. As this place gets more good press -- which I'm sure it will -- you might find it tough to get a spot for some happy hour oysters. Stake it out if you're in the neighborhood. read more

I came in for lunch today since I was craving some etouffee. Like the other reviewers, I found it to be incredible! The flavors were perfect and there was plenty of crawfish meat. I was having a late lunch though and was still a little hungry after I polished off the etouffee, so I also ordered the small plate of fried shrimp. It came with an incredible remoulade sauce and was perfectly fried and very satisfying. When it came time to pay the bill, they also gave me a cafe au lait panna cotta, which was delicious and a great way to end the meal! Will definitely be back here again! read more

Yum! I am from New Orleans and recently moved to New York. I have been desperately trying to find good creole food with no hope. But at last! I found Lowerline. I actually lived on Lowerline Street in New Orleans so this place was especially meaningful to me. The dark roux of the gumbo and crunchy yet soft bread of the poy boy literally almost made me cry. I cannot recommend this place enough. This place isn't just a good New Orleans place in Brooklyn, this place would be wildly successful in the French Quarter. I ordered from this place for takeout. I got the shrimp po boy, 2 catfish po boys and two fries for myself and my family. My food was cold, and anyone who knows anything about food safety and sanitation, knows cold seafood is a no. The shrimp po boy leaves much to be desired. They don't even attempt a remoulade or aioli of any sort. You just get a slather of processed mayonnaise to go with your unseasoned tiny shrimp. The half sandwich goes for $9. I got a full because I was very hungry. I paid $18 for a full sandwich which was the equivalent in length of an 8 inch sandwich and the shrimp is small as I don't know what. The fries were salted as though salt was going out of style. I was given 1 tomato slice per half sandwich and it was the tiniest of Roma tomato slices imaginable. My partner was incredibly disappointed with her catfish as it was also ice cold, soggy and lacked seasoning. Charging $18 for such a pathetic sandwich is truly highway robbery. Food and ambiance amazing. The menu is simple but delicious. The service is impeccable. They allow you to make changes to the menu and the food is really good. I really enjoyed the food here. I had the Crawfish Etouffe!! So yummy! The waiter suggested starting with a 1/2 order. I did. And I liked it so much I ordered a full plate to take home. Had the sparking wine, which was good even though it was hot. My friend enjoyed her shrimp po boy. Sadly, I don't live in Brooklyn, but when I come back I will visit. Also, this is small, but the bathroom was extremely clean. I am funny about that kind of thing as it shows the overall cleanliness of the resturant. Lastly, the waitstaff knows the dishes well, they are friendly and make great suggestions. I don't like oysters but I saw a lot of tables ordering them. Worth a try if you like oysters. This was the best find in Prospect Heights! It's a teeny tiny place, but packed full of flavor! I went with my parents during off hours and it was perfect for a quick lunch. Worth the wait, at least once in your Brooklyn life. The second you walk in, you're hit with this irresistible smell and you just know that you gotta eat here. The place is SUPER tiny (with the kind of crowd they pull I'm sure they could expand one day) so be patient about getting a seat. There are plenty of places within a block or two to grab a drink or a cocktail while you wait, and they're kind enough to call/text when your table is ready. Got the combo half po'boy (oyster) and gumbo - both delicious. Perfect portion to fill me up but not leave me feeling bogged down afterward. Only gripe is that I wish the side order of fries came with more fries, but maybe that's just the time we're living in (or divine intervention to keep me from eating so many fries). The po'boy is one of the better ones I've had in NYC for sure. Service was great and very friendly too. Complimentary tiny dessert, as many have mentioned, is delicious and I'd gladly pay money for it (but please keep making it free because that's such a nice treat). I had an absolutely amazing dinning experience at this restaurant last night. My order consisted of roast beef gravy po' boy and blue crab seafood gumbo, in addition to three orders of fresh oysters from Maine, Long Island, and the west coast each. The food was amazingly delicious, with good serving portion and tastebud-pleasing flavors. The service was great, too! My neighborhood has our fill of Italian/Thai/Mexican/sushi restaurants, but clearly we lack New Orleans cuisine. Lowerline perfectly fills this hole with jovial service, fun music (at a decibel that allows for natural conversation), and delicious food.
