I like Lowry Hill liquors not just because it is my local liquor store, but also because of the selection and pricing. The pricing is of course not as aggressive as Total Wine, but the location is convenient and has that local feel and ownership that we should all support. They have a rewards club that puts their pricing on par with most of their competition. They have particular strength in Rose Wine, Chardonnay, Vodka and Bourbon. But - they also offer European wines and pretty much any liquor that you'd want. Also, a good size beer cooler. Free parking - which in Uptown is always an added bonus! read more

Lowry Hill liquors is a great neighborhood spot thats reasonably priced and has a great selection! I was pleasantly surprised to find out they carried my favorite beer gin and wine: Ommegang Three Philosophers, Gunners Ghost gin, and Josh Cabernet! Besides the great selection the staff are very helpful and the store is kept clean. I signed up for the rewards program because I know I'll be coming here more often! read more

This is much nicer on the inside than it looks on the outside. There's a small adjacent lot with free parking and inside there's a large selection of both local beer and craft beer from other locations. The wine selection was good too. I didn't check out the liquor but there were several aisles so I'm sure you could find what you were looking for. We live close by so will definitely be back. read more

All cashiers are welcoming, fast and efficient. They have excellent work ethic and seem to get along well with each other. It appears that they know many of their customers by first name. They have a great rewards program as well. Never a problem parking as their parking lot serves quite well. The store is extremely clean and shelves are always stocked. I was shocked what a DUMP it is for being in Kenwood! It's actually worse than the Franklin-Nicollet one. They're very efficient and cleaner and I saw a bouncer one Sunday 86 a guy in a wheelchair. What's not to love about this fine Uptown establishment? Lowry Hill Liquor Store has a solid selection of locally and nationally made liquor, wine, and beer sold at a reasonable price. Seasonal Surlys? Wente Riva Ranch Chardonnay? Crispin? Yessum. Also, I appreciate the fact that everything in the store is decently organized, so I can enter and leave asap. Regarding the staff, I think they're awesome. If I have a question about what to get for a certain party, dinner, or any other kind of occasion, they answer without any judgement. If I look like a lost baby cub in the forest, someone usually offers to help. After you revel in the excitement of finding a parking space in an actual free parking lot in uptown, you will totally be surprised by the huge selection of wine Lowry Hill Liquor offers! It appears to be a smaller store, but they really do it up with the availability of wine! In addition to that, they have a ton of local beers and a lot of single-serve beers in the cooler as well. (Crispin, anyone?) And of course, a large selection of actual liquor. It is a little bit of an older store, it isn't all shiny and pretty on the inside, but hey, it delivers the goods! Just moved to the neighborhood and stopped in today to check out the inventory. Their wine selection is surprisingly good and pretty well organized. I was shocked to see some of my favorite bottles priced even more competitively than Total Wine in Roseville. This place was actually cheaper on the Pomelo and McManis. A couple of my favorites! Beer selection seemed small but still had the usual staples and also priced well. The shop's clerk was professional and friendly. Excellent service. I will be happy to be a regular in supporting this little local gem of a store in the future. read more

Lowry Hill Liquor is a really conveient place as far as I am concerned! They have an amazing stock of wine there which is nice for my frequent dinner parties (and let's be honest, I'm a wino). Fuck this place. Was waiting in store for 15 minutes and in line for 5 minutes to check out, when I got to the front of the line it was 10pm. I was then asked for my ID which I accidentally forgot in my car (in the parking lot). They said I could not retrieve my ID and come back in to make a purchase because they "wanted to go home". My dearest friend's 40th birthday fell in the the middle of the COVID-19 shelter in place order, thwarting all of our plans for a visit (I live in a different state) and birthday celebration. I ordered a bottle of champagne from this fine establishment to be delivered to her home as I could not be there in person. The staff at Lowry Hill Liquors went above and beyond! They picked out an amazing bottle at a great price, wrapped it up and put a bow on it! My friend was delighted, and I forever grateful! Lowry Hill Liquor certainly has a lot going for it: They have a pretty good selection w/ pretty good prices, play good music, and are in a very convenient location. They also take credit card, which is leaps and bounds better than Hennepin Lake Liquor, which doesn't. And the people who work there are certainly nice. At the same time, though, on my most recent occasion there, I didn't feel like they were very *friendly* or particularly interested in helping out with anything. It seemed more "Minnesota nice" than anything else (maybe a little pretentious, too) and just kind of put me off to the place. I used to shop here fairly frequently because it is located conveniently for me. However, after one experience in particular, I have stopped shopping here. I'm originally from New England, and I've come across a few older establishments there that have a clear policy that they do not accept out-of-state IDs. Even though I find this a bit puzzling as a business decision (especially in college towns), I understand and respect their decisions. Lowry Hill Liquor store, as far as I know, does not have such a policy. So I thought it was odd when the clerk at the register spent a fairly long time inspecting my girlfriend's out-of-state driver's license. She held it up to the light (?), ask if it was "taped" (??), tried to get her coworker to agree that it "looked funny." Eventually she told us that "this just ain't gonna fly, man. It's just not gonna fly." When we asked why, she told us that the license "didn't match the one in the book." She didn't consult "the book," or offer to show us "the book"; just told us we had to leave. Maybe the clerk was telling the truth, and "the book" was actually outdated, or maybe she wasn't trained properly. Either of these possibilities are indicators of a store that is poorly managed. As I mentioned earlier, I respect that stores can set their own policies on ID requirements, but I don't have any respect for those ones that apparently cannot follow the policies they have stated. I won't shop at a store where I feel there is a 50/50 chance I'll get kicked out for no good reason. read more

I live across the street so this is my go to liquor store. Except on Sundays. Stupid Minnesota. Anyway, that's a different topic. It's small, so you can't expect them to have the biggest selection in the world. I'm a beer guy so I've only purchased a couple bottles of wine there. This review is mainly beer focused. I'm from Michigan, so it's nice to see they always carry Two Hearted (like every place in the cities) and seasonal Bell's (Oberon, Smitten, etc.) and they usually have the best of Founders. There's quite a decent selection of local beer options, including a crap load from Wisconsin. I'm an admitted beer snob so I always get bummed when liquor stores, especially hole in the wall places, don't have the option to purchase singles. I want to sample a lot of these local beers but I don't want to buy an entire 6 pack. You can get singles in almost every store back home, so that's just what I'm used to. And I like it. The only singles you can get here are the 1pt 6oz, and those are the cost of an entire 6 pack. Granted, the big guys they do have are pretty good. Lowry doesn't carry 6 packs of Stone or Rogue, but they'll have a couple big bottles. So that's nice. At most other small liquor stores the staff will almost immediately ask you if you need help or have questions. I've never had this here. While sometimes I enjoy that because I know what I want, sometimes it's comforting to know that the staff is confident in their beer (or wine, whatever) knowledge. There are a couple people here that definitely know their stuff, but others are honestly clueless. As you walk in, there is a poster saying that they'll be getting Two Hearted and Oberon cans. The week Oberon came out (in bottles) I went over to grab some. It's sad not being back in Kalamazoo for Oberon day and I was craving some summer loving. I walk in and there is an empty spot in the cooler labeled "Oberon." Ok, they must have sold out. It was the first day it was available in Minnesota. Understandable. I go up and ask the girl at the counter when they'll get more and she said something about how they didn't have it yet because it wasn't even released yet and gave me a speech about how it's a seasonal beer. Despite the fact she knew nothing about it and was flat out wrong (I gave her the benefit of the doubt because this is Minnesota, not Michigan), I asked her why the spot on the shelf was there and she knew absolutely nothing about it. It seems there is a complete disconnect between the workers at the counter and the actual people who stock the coolers/shelves. Those guys are the helpful ones. Just go straight to them if you have questions. Anywho, another Bell's issue (sorry, it's my homeland). I go over there because the cans of Two Hearted and Bell's have been released and I wanted to see if they'd reached Minnesota yet. Again, the poster saying they will get the cans is in my face immediately as I walk in. I go to the cooler and nothing. They have Two Hearted, Midwestern, and Oberon bottles. Whatever. No big. I go up to the guy at the counter and ask when they'll be coming in and he has no idea that they even existed (despite the big poster) and said they probably won't be getting them and if they do they will sell well because people like cans or something blah blah blah. Another attempted knowledgable speech about something they really had no knowledge about. I should have asked the guy bringing in cases. That was my mistake. With all of that being said, I really don't mind it. I probably sounded really obnoxious, but I've been spoiled with awesome ma and pa liquor stores my whole life. Lowry is close by. I really love supporting family owned places. If I'm craving a beer, they usually have what I want (or something close to it). They just don't have a lot if I want to try new things. And they say that you can do specialty case orders. I've yet to take them up on that. BUT there are a crap load of "better" liquor stores in the cities. There are other places with a more knowledgable staff, an option to buy singles, a bigger selection, etc. If you need your basic goods, this is a great place to go. If you are a snob or have a lot of questions, maybe not. read more

The prices aren't the lowest here and they don't have everything I could want (I mean space is certainly the reason for this) but I love this liquor store. It's exceedingly convenient to where I hang out when I'm in the neighborhood, which is a major plus. If they don't have what I'm looking for there is usually something else I like close at hand so it's no big deal. I also never leave without some sort of witty banter or humorous exchange with the staff at the cash register which is very pleasant. I just witnessed an awful confrontation between a staff member and old man that left me in the worst mood. The older man was parked in the handicap spot and this staff was swearing at him to move his (explicit) car. When the customer showed the credentials to park in the spot, the staff member continued to ream the guy out, swearing, screaming, very aggressive. Then he came back in and ran to the back like a total coward when he should've been out there taking accountability for his mistake to make this better. I called to talk to a manager (Nate?) and was told that the staff involved was also a manager (Brian?) and had a fire in his apt. Nate was VERY nice about it (agreeing that they were in the wrong) but I'm gonna go elsewhere moving forward. No one deserves to be spoken to like that, especially handicap seniors during this corona crap. Plus, if the other manager had a fire, shouldn't that loser be home dealing with his landlord/insurance in that rental? read more

Wanted to surprise the Boyfriend when he was out on business in Minneapolis (I'm sitting at home in Boston.. so local help was needed). Quick internet search, these guys deliver. I got permission from his hotel, and asked Lowry Hill if they would assist me. They did double check with the hotel my guy was staying at, which I did not mind at all (responsibility!). Jesse also helped me find a beer he would likely enjoy from a MN Brewery that he hadn't tried yet. One hour later, this beer is sitting in the fridge at his hotel and the BF is in for a very happy surprise when he gets back after a 14 hour day of work. A+ and thanks for all the help! read more
