The front desk was very lackluster--they didn't explain anything, just handed us the locker room keys. I had read up about the place so I knew the locker rooms were coed, but I was still confused as to whether there were changing rooms or what was the proper etiquette. Place is small and I understand the price is more moderate compared to other spas, but you feel nickel and dimed. Everything is extra, you don't even get complimentary tea. The masseuses were amazing, no complaints there, but when we tried to tip and asked if 100% goes to the masseuse, they said 25% goes to the spa and 75% to the masseuse. I'm sorry, what? Very unethical considering that structure is not transparent at all. The massages were amazing so it's a shame they're not getting their fair share. read more

I went to Loyly and got a massage and used the the sauna. The massage was great! Loved everything about it! The massage is what is keeping this a 3 star review. The rest of the spa experience and atmosphere was lacking for me. The space was very small and felt crowded. The waiting area was very uncomfortable. It is a small bench right next to the check in desk and was not a relaxing place to wait. The locker room was co-ed which I was not expecting and was also crowded. I didn't know where to change. The floors of the locker room were all wet and it felt damp. It didn't but feel like a nice relaxing spa experience. The sauna area was crowded. Only 3 chairs to hangout in which were occupied most of the time. There was a charge for tea which is usually complimentary in a spa experience. I ended up leaving before my 2 hours for the sauna experience because it was not relaxing and the vibe was not enjoyable. Loyly has been a reasonable value for cost in SE for sometime. They amenities are pretty standard, but their dry sauna in particular is exceptional. Unfortunately, I can not recommend them as a business of choice anymore. They do nothing to protect their clients from harassment or bullying from other patrons. On two separate occasions, while attending their SE facility my boyfriend was harassed by a large male patron. After informing the front desk of his behavior, my boyfriend was informed that it was a me problem. He chose to leave instead of navigate the problem patron or the apathy of staff. And he instead ask that a note be added to his account to alert him to this patron's presence. On his last visit my boyfriend had been there for less than 30 minutes, and the same patron showed up. My boyfriend got up without saying anything, and informed the front desk that he was leaving. He had the audacity to ask that we not be charged since we had not benefited from the visit. This was enough to get an email email from either the owner or general manager informing him that he is banned. Great job Loyly. You just lost a life time customer. I hope your other patrons enjoy a greater sense of personal safety than he was afforded. read more

I stumbled upon this place when I was craving a good sauna experience and this place absolutely delivered. I also like the enhancements you can add to your sauna experience like the facemask and the salt scrub. The facility is beautiful and understated. The couple of times I've gone, people are very respectful and observe the no phones rule and keep low voices. The staff is really friendly and helpful! Also an added bonus in the locker room is a variety of organic body/face products that they sell available for use. It's great to get an opportunity to try new products and it's also equally convenient to not have to bring all of those things from home. Definitely will continue to frequent this place! read more

A true sanctuary in the city. Löyly southeast has been providing a refreshing respite to Portlanders for 20 years. As soon as you walk through the doors, you feel a sense of peace and relaxation. The floor plan of the spa is really well laid out for a limited space. I appreciate that staggered bookings help regulate the flow of people and keeps crowding to a minimum. The staff are super friendly and if you pay for any extras, they write your name on a tray with your face masks, scrubs and tea cups. The dry sauna is spacious and hot, and the steam room is clean - a difficult thing to maintain! I'll definitely be back. read more

I treated myself to a long, expensive massage as a birthday gift to myself, and it was disappointing. The massage therapist was very kind and professional, but the massage just wasn't good. It basically felt like she was just rubbing lotion on me for 90 minutes. There was nothing therapeutic about it. I asked for harder pressure, but it didn't last longer than 3 or 4 seconds. Absolutely lovely. One of the best experiences I've had in months. Loyly is certainly not no frills, but it is also understated in really calming way. The music was so immersive and the selection of reading material was such an unexpected plus. I was visiting PDX for a few days after work travel and really enjoyed unwinding here. The price was very fair, all the facilities clean, and never too crowded. Super nice staff too. It's a sauna so you can sort of chose your own adventure, just make sure to enjoy and relax :) I especially appreciated the silent sauna vs social sauna options. Yes! What a lovely place to get sauna services! I also loved their steam room, it had essential oil scented steam and it was just lovely. I felt really relaxed during my entire time here, I highly recommend coming here for a nice little oasis away from life. Also, very clean and sanitary. They had an open air area perfect for cooking down after steaming or sauna-ing your life away! Each time you come you're provided with a bathrobe and a towel too, and they had wonderful products to use during the shower and afterwards, and what a lovely touch their reading nook is - a cute curation of books to read in between sweating ;). What a cool place! Some friends and I went on one of the hottest days of the summer for some crazy reason, but it was still great. Compared to Knot Springs, it's pretty small, but it has all that you could need: showers, a sauna, a steam room, a cold shower, and massages. We booked our session in the late morning, and we had two hours. We did face masks and foot soaks, and I had some of their cleansing tea. Staff were very nice and helpful. The steam room could probably fit five people closely (so don't be shy!) and the dry sauna is considerably larger. I wish there were more loungers (there were only 3). I think next time we go, we're going to pay extra to rent the whole space to just ourselves. I'm looking forward to coming here in the winter! read more

I visited the NE location for the monthly special and really liked it, so I scheduled another experience with my boyfriend to try their 45 minutes massage + 2 hours sauna + monthly special for 99 bucks for each of us (current price as of 10/2018) This location is a bit smaller than the NE one. Mostly due to lack of the water cooling "room" and replaced with a curtain shower in the relaxing area. To be honest, it didn't bother me because we were going to be wet from our own sweat anyways! The facility provides lockers, towels, robe, drinking water, hair dryer, shower gel and shampoo/conditioner. So just bring your swimming suit! I wasn't sure how my boyfriend would respond to the spa. Would he get bored or get uncomfortable? In reality, I think he likes it. It was very nice to experiences the practice of relaxation together, while not saying much to each other. Something about the heat and sweat really helps remove you from everyday stress, and elevate you to a better, easier-to-breath place. The foot soak was filled with beautiful array of dry flowers, essential oil and sea salt. It was a feast to my eyes, nose and feet! We did one hour of sauna/steam room, then the 45 minute massage, then the foot soak/mud face mask/body scrub and sauna/steam room again (if you have time) before you take the shower and check out. There were a mixed of couples and singles in the spa. We were all friendly and keep things to ourselves. I noticed a lady was walking around nude until she realized it's mix gender day, then had to wear her robe to sauna/steam room... so please check the schedule of the facilities since they could be gender specific in some days. The vibe here is as it should be calm, quiet and relaxing, with professional, attentive staff and most importantly a very clean and relaxing environment. You don't need to bother with bringing any toiletries, as towels, robes, flip flops, as well as plenty of soaps, shampoo, conditioner and moisturizers are all provided, so you can leave relaxed and cleansed on what feels like both internal and external levels. Just don't forget your bathing suit and to be adequately hydrated and to also take advantage of their water, herbal teas and other beverages. If I could come here several times a week I certainly would. The only addition I can think of that would make it better would be a cold plunge, but for now the icy shower will have to do. I went in thinking nothing had changed, no signs posted anywhere to say differently. When I walked into the sauna area, I saw topless men, I was topless as well and didn't think anything. Now that I have been to a few well-known sauna/steam room/general spa establishments around Portland, and a handful of experiences in Europe, I feel better about giving this review. The staff are completely clueless during check-in process, during spa session and the check-out process. No organization at all. Every other guest is given spa slippers and if the person servicing you forgets, it's up to you to be proactive and ask for some. Paid ahead of time with a credit card and wanted to charge me again until I showed them the email. Even with the email, I had to be shuffled around confused staff members because they wanted to verify the email with a manager but couldn't find her. You can tell a well-functioning spa from a poorly functioning one by the number of people they let use the facilities at a given time slot. They tell you that they limit the number so that there is enough space for everyone, but it's not the case. Crowded af. If I wanted to sweat it out with a group of people, I would just go to a Body Pump class or fast walk around IKEA. Knot Springs and Sante Spa have mastered the timing so that everyone gets a nice block of time - Loyly? Not so much. Mind you, Loyly has been in business for quite some time so even if there is a high staff turnover, there should be sufficient training for new staff members - you are a business, act like one. The only good thing about Loyly are the contracted masseuses - the lady (I will keep her anonymous for obvious reasons) I had was wonderful. Most of these masseuses operate their own practice on the side and are eager to hand out their business cards after your session. I directed my tip during the checkout process to my masseuse and found out she never received it (I followed up with her outside of Loyly because she is good). Out of all of the establishments, I have to rank Loyly at the bottom and I wish they'd stop comparing themselves to "saunas in Scandinava" because they are are a far cry from them. read more

This is a fun place to go for a steam with friends...but don't expect a proper spa. It's very cute don't get me wrong! A few things that threw me off last time I was there that made me not really want to return, at least for a massage. -there were little ants in the seating area outside the sauna -My massage was just ok. But the whole experience was off because you aren't offered tea (you can buy their prebrewed winter tea) and when I left the massage I walked through the front (where the check in is). The only place to sit and relax is outside the sauna and it was cold! If the massage was cheap, I wouldn't have minded as much but it was market price! It made me wonder why I shouldn't just go to another spa that offers the basics. -the front attendant was kind and professional but I was thrown off when she reminded me of the phone policy during my experience when I had my phone in my locker turned off the whole time. I scheduled a massage for 8pm, after a confusing mixup while scheduling the massage online and the confirmation email had a different date that I scheduled. While the receptionist was friendly on the phone, and helped me fix the date mixup, she was a bit much upon arrival. I brought a can that had opened but with almost nothing left into my appointment with me, after looking for the appropriate receptacle for recycling outside with no luck. I asked the girl to recycle it for me, but she accused me of drinking and told the manager on duty that I was drinking and was told I wouldn't be allowed to have the services I booked and scheduled. You check in at the front desk, change into your swimsuit, and lock everything in your locker... then you're ready to relax! They have showers, a sauna, a steam room. They have two rooms for services such as swedish massage, deep tissue massage, and more. Loyly is more of a self-serve kind of spa. Example: you apply your own face mask. It's small but packs a stress-free punch! When first arriving, you enter the changeroom (often co-ed), get into your bathing suit (they have some to rent if you don't bring one), and head around the corner to the sauna area. This is comprised of a hot sauna, a steam sauna, and a cold-as-hell shower. There are benches and reclining lounge chairs to rest in between your sauna time and a little bar where you can saddle up to get tea, snacks, facial masks, foot soaks, or body scrubs. We did the Head to Toe package so it included all those things (for $47) and is like a self-serve spa time. We took our little container of facial mask (with many types to choose from) and slathered it on our own faces before soaking our feet in a bowl of petals and lovely smelling essential oils. We also splurged for the additional seaweed bag which is suppose to help draw our impurities. The saunas are SMALL but this is why they make appointments and limit the number of people who are in at any one time. We didn't have any problem with finding space for us. You definitely feel a bit vulnerable with the co-ed situation but they do have a single stall change room if you're concerned. I love the quality products they offer (Dr. Haushka). All in all, I think this is a great thing to do with friends as it's a shared experience. Great location with two different kinds of saunas; steam and hot and dry! The steam sauna is very small and can only accommodate a maximum of maybe 6 people. The hot and dry sauna can fit much more people; maybe 10-12. My massage with Emily was also very relaxing and I loved the hot water poured over the herbs! Smelled great and created a calming atomosphere. The unrelaxing part of the experience is that the hallway outside of the massage rooms was very active and detracted from a quiet and relaxing space. Be advised that the set up is VERY open; the changing room is open to all genders, the only toilet is in the changing room area so to can hear all of the "activities" going on in the stall. The showers are also in the open area but there are curtains for privacy. That being said, I get why it's all open; the space is very small so it seems like a spacing saving necessity. Almost always a 5-star experience. I've been going to Loyly since...2009?...and the clean, calm, rejuvenating atmosphere is (literally) just what the doctor ordered. I left town in 2012, and when I returned, prices had increased a bit, but they're still fair, and the base fee for a two-hour stay is affordable enough for just about anyone to indulge from time to time. Most recently, I was disappointed that the tea dispenser was never refilled after I purchase a pricey (but refillable) cup. Couldn't get the attendants attention, and I came and went a few times. The dispenser just sat, disassembled on the counter. On the bright side, when leaving they didn't charge me for the tea. (Whether by accident or on purpose, I don't know.) I've booked massages in the past, and they've been soothing, though much more geared for relaxation than therapy. The essential oil choices are nice. I don't think of go here specifically for massage, but as an add-on, it's a great option. The real treat for me, and the 5-star clincher, is the calm and quiet space. I pay money for the trees peeking over the simple wooden screens just outside the lounge windows, for the warm, enveloping air and steam (and that frigid, make-your-limbs-go-numb steel soaking tank), for the cell-phone free zone, for the breathing room inside my heart and mind while I'm there. read more

Wow. So much wow. Good wow! My work life has been everything so I've had limited time for self care after being hunched over a laptop all year. I felt like shit. I have chronic aches and pains that will need work. I had a treat myself day that was full and then decided to try and snag a massage. Most places book waaaaay out. Fortunately I was able to duck into Loyly for thirty minutes. The facility is in a great part of SE and is itself an immaculate and cozy building. The therapist was ready for me and asked what I needed to work on and targeted what I reported. Even with thirty minutes she did tremendous work. For the first time in weeks or even months some of the pain was gone or at least reduced. I went home relaxed and happy and quickly fell into natural and contented sleep. Therapist also called out a few observations using her expertise about what's going on with me and what might help both at home and were I to return, which I appreciate. I want to keep at the issue and I want to hear from someone who knows their stuff. I will absolutely return. I'm going to see if there's some insurance help or wfh stipend. Loyly SE is absolutely gorgeous! From the second you step in you'll feel at peace and your spirit lifted. I really enjoyed my experience.. the staff was friendly, the space was clean, and the atmosphere was serene. Although, I'm giving a 4 out of 5 because the facial was not all that I had hoped it would be and caused my skin to get worse. I would suggest that if you have any sensitivity to heavy products, or naturally oily skin, that you wash off any product when you get home. This is what I'm assuming caused my breakout that day.
