This place is delightful. A little piece of New Orleans in North Carolina. Service was very attentive, but not overly so. The fried oysters were delightful as was the crab cake. The grouper was delicious. The jambalaya was pretty good but the roux seemed somehow both overdone and a little raw - like they tried to resurrect it with flour but didn't cook it down enough. Definitely not in Louisiana! Watered-down drinks at a high-end restaurant? Really? That was the intro. I'd write about the meal if I had something good to say but quite frankly it was just a little under ordinary. (The only exception being the crab cakes). My wife and daughter had to get up from the table for about 10 minutes because the smoke in the restaurant was killing their eyes. Stopped by on a Saturday night around 8:15. Restaurant was not busy and were seated right away. Someone came by and gave us water. This was the only time were approached by an employee. We waited 15 minutes and during the time several servers passed our table but no one bothered to acknowledge us. We just dined there. Our reservation was for 6:30, but we didn't have a table until 7:15. The menu is nothing like the Louisiana Purchase, which we loved! It's more like the Banner Elk Cafe and has lost it's special menu, service, and atmosphere. This is nothing special now. It was packed and noisy, and not worth the cost of dinner. This was billed as one of the finer dining establishments in the area, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The restaurant itself was open and beautifully decorated with paintings and a gorgeous mural keeping with the Cajun/Creole theme. Our hostess was also one of the co-owners, who gave us a litle backstory on the restaurant, which has received rave reviews in the past from Wine Spectator. Their wine list isn't a list - it's a NOVEL, so be prepared to do a little light reading before ordering he wine. But hey, when it comes to wine I would rather have too many options than none at all, and they do have a quality and extensive selection. The food choices were also diverse - ranging from a local trout dish to jambalaya and etouffe (of course!). While I was extremely impressed by the menu selections and pairing of ingredients, the finished product was not quite what I had imagined or hoped for. It was quite good, but fell a little short of the mark. The shrimp bisque was a little on the salty side and a little too heavy on the cream; the exotic salad was lacking substance (although after Scuba Steve's salads nothing else can quite compare!); my Blackened Fish Royale (mahi mahi topped with crawfish and etouffe sauce) was a litle overcooked; and our dessert, Bananas Foster, lacked a litle in presentation and was overly sweetened (is that possible???). For the price I expected a bit more, however in a tiny mountain town like Banner Elk, this was definitley the cuilinary highlight and I would go back again. They also had red meat offerings that looked great, and I would definitley suggest sticking to the Cajun/Creole offerings - those seem to be their specialty. read more

We keep going back. It is awesome. Krispy Kreme bread pudding was amazing. Wished we would not have split it 4 ways. I had a seafood risotto that was great. We made reservations for a special event. We were seated promptly and that's when things started going downhill. We both ordered the Hanger Steak and also French fries. My steak, served atop pureed butternut squash was fine but the portions skimpy. In addition to the squash, there were 4 halves of Brussel sprouts. My husband's steak was grisly. When the server asked how everything was, he said "ok". I jumped in and told the waiter that the steak was grisly. He offered to take it back to the kitchen. When he came back with a saucer and the steak was placed on it, he said, "it looks ok to me." We started to protest but decided not to make a fuss though we were displeased. The waiter offered to send the manager over which we agreed to. The manager never came and our celebratory dinner was an awful experience. And the French fries...little skinny, someone tasteless fries similar in size to the ones you can buy in a can. We have been here before and had a great experience but not this time. I won't be able to get my husband to go back and I'm not that excited about the prospect either. read more

We came to Banner Elk on my birthday vacation and on the first night decided to eat here. At first it seemed to be a great place, good service and nice accommodations but as the night progressed we discovered our waiter was one of the rudest and most unprofessional I've experienced. It became obvious the game he was playing to take advantage of the "unknowing tourists". Blatantly lying about menu substitutions to up the bill; bringing replacements to dishes without checking with the customer just to guarantee it gets added to the check; and upon complaining to the "manager" about our issues he decides to come back like a child throwing a temper tantrum and scream over the edge of the restaurant to one of his friends, (right next to our table) as we're trying to scavenge what's left of our experience. I will NEVER come back and it's so unfortunate such a nice restaurant has such an incompetent and self serving employee. I guess the included 20% gratuity was enough for him to give zero mind to his customer service skills. The manager tried to accommodate but at the end of the day decided to tell us it was our fault for not reading the menu and said "well he told me he didn't do those things" . Such a waste of money and time, take your business elsewhere. read more

We had high expectations of LP on main or Louisiana purchase. I am not sure which name they go by. I was told the name was changed to LP on Main but Louisiana Purchase remains listed on everything. Anyway my wife and I had reservations for 2. We were taken to a very tiny 2 top. We asked for a larger table, the couples around us had 4 tops, they said those tables were requested. We just requested one. We could not understand the waiter due to his very thick mask. I gave up trying, my wife could make it out. We ordered a bottle of wine and the scallop appetizer. The wine was great, the scallop appetizer was great although high priced for 3 medium sized scallops and a couple of small cold sliced potatoes. The wine was high priced also, $38 for a $10-$12 bottle, we looked it up, although we know wine is marked up considerably, this seemed a little much. We ordered dinner, the risotto and blackened mahi, by the way the menu is very limited and nothing that I would consider cajun. We also ordered the collard greens after we were assured by the waiter that they were not sweet. Our food arrived, the mahi was very small and again there were 3 medium scallops in the risotto. The mahi was overcooked and a knife was needed to cut it. The risotto was very undercooked, hard and crunchy. The collards greens were sweet, not as we were told. We had to send it all back, which is embarassing. It was also very high priced for the portion size even if it had been good. Also my wife said something to the waiter and he responded that " it was the wine talking". We ended up getting 2 caesar salads which were pretty good. Anyway we were charged for 2 salads and a bottle of wine $68.00. I would not recommend LP on Main or Louisiana Purchase, which supposedly have different menus but are the same thing ? We were confused about that. Also no bread if you are expecting some. read more

Absolutely horrible. Had a reservation and waited over 40 minutes to be seated. Was first seated at the bar and bartender took 15 minutes to notice us (only 8 seats at the bar). Finally seated and then had to ask for bread and waited another hour and a half for a salad. Second appetizer came later. Finally got up to leave due to complete lack of service. Hostess completely unapologetic and rushed us out of the restaurant. Would not recommend at all. Was looking for a romantic night out and it was a complete disaster. Terrible experience. read more

We were totally impressed at this diamond in the rough (bc it is in a humble location and not as well published as we would expect. We arrived with a reservation to white table cloths and black napkins. Our server was helpful, pleasant and attentive. They have a very nice menu and several interesting entrees, of which we chose two. We thoroughly enjoyed our oyster appetizer and both our entrees! Huge wine list. We would go back in a heartbeat. What a disappointment tonight. Last visit was excellent, but tonight terrible. 7:00 O'clock reservation and finally got salad at 8:35 and dinner at 9:00. They complimented some wine and deserts but that did not offset the terribly slow service. Food has always been good but by the time it arrived I could not eat it after a salad and a long wait. If you are a foodie of any demographic DO NOT GO HERE. We were so disappointed that I actually signed up for yelp to leave our first review. The jambalaya had overpowering undercooked tomato. The etouffe was too soupy with too little rice and the chef burned the roux so the whole dish tasted burnt. $27?! I could make much better at home for $5- $10. My husband and I had a very nice dinner there last weekend. We were seated quickly (we made reservation as they recommended). Dining area was clean and candlelit. We chose not to order an appetizer but the one roll of bread we both got were scruptuous. Wish we were offered more. Our waiter was quite professional, informative , pleasant and prompt. I ordered the filet and requested medium well ( I know ) and it came out very rare. The waiter immediately took it back in to the kitchen and had it corrected. Came back,perfect and very tender and juicy. The chimchurri sauce was just enough. I asked for a substitution of sweet potato ( which are like crispy onion swirls). Instead of the potato salad. I'm very glad my request was honored as I cleaned my plate, which is unusual for me. It also came with grilled asparagus. Which was crispy and tasted fresh. My husband ordered the crawfish ettoufee, and even though I thought it had a foul, wanky odor, my husband enjoyed it.we decided to splurge and split a creme brûlée for dessert and it was perfect. The crack on the crust was crispy and tasty and the filling was smooth and creamy but not too sweet. Our meal including a blood orange margarita was around $100 which was reasonable considering especially how good the food was. We will definitely visit again. Hopefully it was just a bad night? The place was empty and it made us skeptical upon arrival. After reading all the positive reviews we decided this would be a great place to celebrate our anniversary. We started with a Caesar Salad which was awesome. My wife then ordered the risotto seafood special that was recommended by our server. At $45 this plate was almost uneatable! I had the steak which was so slaty I couldn't believe they'd ruin a steak this way. The veggies with the steak saved the plate from being bad bad. When the server came to check on us my wife's plate was pushed to the center of the table, after just a few bites. The server asked how our meals were and we politely responded with the steak is good, as the steak plate was now in front of my wife. The server took it in stride and responded with silence. When you spend $175 on dinner for 2, I expect to be blown away by the food. Or at least be acknowledged when you see a plate is untouched. The wine list is the only reason I'm giving it 2 stars. Louisiana Purchase doesnt have a sign out front other than a window card saying 'open,' and it doesnt need one. We had a truly fabulous dinner from the 'summer in a bowl' tomato salad to the blackened quail with oysters to the barbecued shrimp with grits. My husband and I dined here tonight for the first time in years, our experience was amazing. My husband had the jambalaya, a very generous portion of a delicious meal. We shared the heirloom tomato salad which was a variation of a caprese salad and it was one of the best salads we've ever had, my special which was a hangar steak with some yummy mushrooms and very fresh vegetables was delish! Came here last night for Valentines dinner while skiing for the weekend. It was snowing like crazy and the place was pretty full. We did not have a reservation but were seated immediately in the upstairs bar area at 7:30. Although it was busy we were well taken care of by the friendly and attentive waitstaff. Started with some cocktails and the coquille st. Jacques. My wife had the short rib special and I had the tempura eggplant boat. Added a bottle of champagne 'cause it was Valentine's Day and you better do that stuff or else. For dessert had the creme brûlée and some aperitifs. Loved it! The husband and I went for the first time a few weekends ago and it was phenomenal! Our waitress was so delightful and well educated on the menu and wine selection ( lets just pause to talk about how awesome the wine list was! They know their stuff, no wonder that have rave reviews in wine spectator). My husband ordered the flank steak, or hanger I think they called it, and i ordered the salmon. For our appetizer we had the baked oysters which were TO DIE FOR. We ate every bite even though we were full and STILL ordered dessert.
