The last few times we've been to Lucille's, I've thought it was just mediocre. It used to be really good. My husband really likes Lucille's and wanted to come back so we did. The server was nice enough but barely came by. I think she only checked in us once. I ordered a classic tri-tip sandwich and the meat was terrible. We came here for lunch on my birthday. I was really looking forward to trying Lucille's. I had heard the strawberry lemonade was "to die for," and while it was refreshing, it wasn't anything special. Lunch guests, be aware that the lunch menu was disappointing. The portions were extremely small for the price. I ended up spending about $31 for a lunch entrée and a strawberry lemonade, and it definitely didn't feel like a good value. I ordered the brisket, and I couldn't believe it came with just one slice. It honestly felt comical. I also tried the new fried chicken breast, which was tasty but not outstanding. The macaroni and cheese was dry, and the biscuit with apple butter was very hard. I wish I had taken a picture, but I was celebrating with friends and didn't think about it at the time. For me, the biggest issue was the portion sizes, spending $31 for lunch not worth it. You'll find Lucille's at the Tempe Marketplace. It was a ladies lunch day at Lucille's. This place usually has specials. Three of us ordered one of the specials offered. The special was chicken Caesar salad with a choice of four different desserts. The dessert we chose was a chocolate cake crumble with ice cream. Another order was the chicken bowl with mashed potatoes and veggies. And the last order was Brisket tacos with nachos. Delicious! The chicken in the salad was lightly breaded and fried to perfection. The chicken was so tender. You didn't need a knife to cut into it. The dessert was served warm with ice cream on top. We all asked for our ice cream to be on the side. The cake had some chocolate syrup on it. Oh my goodness, heaven sent! Lucille's is quite large and can accommodate big parties of people. You can take care of your bill through an electronic machine that sits on the table. Separate checks are welcomed if necessar. Let the server know in advance and they are happy to accommodate. Wanted to try a new place and BBQ sounded good. Lucille's looked like it had some character. I saw the mixed reviews and needed to form my own opinion. There's lot of character to this place, I liked that. The service was excellent! Definitely got points for that! The food was ok at best and the portions vs the price was waaaay off, it was comical. When our family arrived at the restaurant, we saw an AC repair van out front. It was 109° that day. Surprisingly it wasn't that hot in the restaurant. They were many oscillating fans blowing as well as ceiling fans running. We were not uncomfortable so we stayed. The restaurant did get busier. We went at 6pm on a Saturday night. Our server Tiffany was friendly. We called the restaurant to see if we needed a reservation. It was not necessary. Delicious Barbecue, custom sauces to choose from. Great craft beer selection. I moved away from Tempe about 5 years ago and loved eating here. Was back in town and had to stop. With my wife and kids.Wow what happened. First the girl at the hostess stand couldn't have looked more miserable. Not a hi, not a welcome nothing. She just saw there was four of us and slowly grabbed four menus and waited for someone to walk us to the table. That guy didn't address us at all and just looked at us with a dead face and started walking toward some tables. He then stood between two empty tables and looked at us with a blank stare like we should know what one to sit in. We picked one. He dropped the menus on the table and walked away. I eat out a lot and have never had an experience like that. Everyone that we encountered there seemed miserable. Our server was pretty good and was helpful. Ok I am willing to trade bad service with awesome food!! But this was bad. This is a photo of my 9 0z $32 brisket. It's gray!! No smoke ring no bark it seriously tasted like they boiled it. Not tender at all, It was just bad. Not to mention it was barely warm. But even if it was heated up it wouldn't have been good. It actually looks better in the picture than real life. My wife said her ribs were ok but hardly warm. Best thing we tasted was the kids mac n cheese. Stopped in for a date night! My husband and I did the 3 course feast for two for $60 and it was the perfect amount of food! You got your choice of 3 meats (we did ribs, bbq half chicken, tri tip), 2 sides, An appetizer or two salads, biscuits with apple butter, and a dessert! I am not a huge BBQ lover so i mostly at the chicken, and it was the perfect balance of sweetness and smoky flavor. The biscuits with the apple butter were the star of the show for me!! I really liked how this place was a little bit away from the crowds at Tempe marketplace. There was parking right in front and they even let us bring our dog to sit in the indoor patio. Service was good. The restaurant was clean and the staff was very nice. The sweet tea was fresh and amazing, not too sweet. BBQ Nachos appetizer was delicious. Then comes out the main meal. I got the choose 2 meats w/ 2 sides for $24 (smaller portion). My boyfriend got the choose 2 meats w 2 sides for $38 (larger portion). Both plates come out looking to be the same portion, if anything my cheaper plate looks to have larger portions. The bbq sauce on the meat was FAR too sweet. Tried all sauces. The spicy bbq wasn't spicy. The original was way too sweet. There was an orange colored bbq that was tangy that was okay. The "Texas" brisket was a shame. It was stiff and dry. So I paid $1.50 up charge for "Texas style" brisket when it's just some cardboard. Had a great experience at Lucille's Smokehouse Bar-B-Que. Our server, Christian, was fantastic--very attentive, friendly, and checked on our table often to make sure we had everything we needed. The complimentary honey butter biscuits came out hot and fresh and were a great start to the meal. I had the Smokehouse Bacon Burger, which was cooked perfectly, and the Brisket Nachos appetizer were awsome. Seriously did me in! We were so full by the end of the meal that we didn't have room for dessert, but the Strawberry Banana Pudding looked amazing. We'll definitely have to save that for next time. Hubby & I had dinner here last night. We arrived at 5:20. We were greeted & seated right away. It's like going to your grandma, but when you get inside it's like being taken back in time. There is several old signs from back in the day and old hub caps. It took our server a few minutes to come to the table, but not too bad. We offered waters. Hubby ordered the michelada & I had the southern sangria. Hubby liked the michelada in the beginning, but there was so much ice that it got watered down so he only drank half of it. I didn't like my drink. All I could taste was the Jim Beam Black Bourbon. It took a long time to get our drinks. They didn't arrive until right before our meals. Hubby got the 2 meat plate with baby back ribs, pulled pork, beans & coleslaw. I got the 1/3 rack baby back ribs, Mac n cheese & corn pudding. The baby back ribs were tough & dry, no smoke ring & no taste of being smoked. The sauces on the table were all watered down. The beans were running, as well as the coleslaw. I didn't like the Mac n cheese. The noodles were too done & the cheese sauce tasted like cheese whiz. The biscuits were ok, but too crunchy on the outside and dry on the inside. The corn pudding was good. It's just like the sweet corn cake you used to get at Chi Chi's. We will not be back. At over $90 for 2 drinks & 2 plates, nothing good but 1 side, & no need to take leftovers, totally not worth it. While leaving we realized there was no smell of smokers. read more

It's been several years since we were last here. Some things haven't changed - the place is still busy and still smells heavenly. I was in the mood for southern fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. The veggies were fresh and I love mashed potatoes that still have some texture to them. Yum. I was surprised that they were boneless cutlets - still very good - I guess I assumed I would be getting pieces. The Hubbs was a little disappointed with the beef ribs - they were not very meaty. Everyone on our group was fond of their baked beans. The others had the St Louis ribs which looked fabulous. Our server was a little slow and we would have to remind him about requests. Hoffman might want to come check this location out. We took a deviation from our usual Friday routine because we wanted some good BBQ, we should've stuck with Caldwell County. It was not a busy lunch, walked in, no host to be seen. We stood waiting at the host stand for about 3 minutes before a host comes out from the back to greet us. We get seated in the bar area and settled down. The first thing I noticed was the menus were nasty and sticky. I thought the hosts were supposed to keep these things wiped down. Another 10 minute wait for the server to tell us he'll "be right with us." 2-3 minutes later he comes by, we place drink orders. After about a 5 minute wait we decided we were done, given the terrible service up till now, plus the nasty menus...probably won't be worth it. We got up to leave, on the way out the manager is at the host stand, I tell her terrible service and that we were leaving. She doesn't even apologize, just sarcastically tells us to have a nice day. Like I said earlier, corporate is gonna wanna come out and check this place if this is the service they provide to their customers. We definitely won't be back, we'll stick with Caldwell county's mexi-Que in DTG. Always quality food, good service, and a good environment. read more

I hate doing this, but I have to update my review from 4 stars to 2 stars. My boyfriend and I haven't been to Lucille's in years and decided to try it out on a Monday night before a concert in Tempe. It was awful. I'm giving 2 stars because the service was good and our waiter was attentive. My boyfriend and I split the $60 meal for two and ordered each a drink. It was AWFUL. Everything we ate tasted like it was leftover from the weekend. The brisket? Pitiful and dried out. The bbq chicken, smothered in sauce so sweet it was inedible. The jalapeno/cheddar sausage, so greasy it slid around the plate. The fries, barely cooked. The Mac n cheese tasted like it was 2 days old. Even the banana pudding (one of my favorite desserts) wasn't very good. It didn't have that great banana cream and Nilla wafer texture like it should have. I am so bummed to write this, but this was an awful meal. They also sat my boyfriend and I in the far back corner in the hottest part of the restaurant and then a family of 8 right next to us with an entire restaurant that was open. I love Lucille's but the one near me in the Bay area closed down so I was excited to stop here. Unfortunately, I think this might be the reason they are going out of business. First off, I want to commend the staff for their honesty. I had brought my parents for dinner and when we departed, I had pulled the car around and forgotten my purse on the chair. When I arrived at how, I realized it immediately. I called and the host stated, "Oh hey, we have your purse. You were sitting in the enclosed patio area, your purse was hanging on the chair, we remember you," and all I had said was "I think I forgot..." and she filled in the rest. I had medication, etc all in there and it was all in tact. Finding genuine people such as the workers at Lucilles are hard to come by so I will aways support this business. We usually enjoy Lucille's, but this experience was disappointing. Our server took very long with everything and most of our food/drinks were brought by other servers. We ordered the brisket nachos appetizer and I actually saw another waiter walk by with it twice, took it back to the kitchen, then brought it to our table. By that time the cheese was cold, the chips were burnt as if they put it in an oven to warm up, and the brisket that was supposed to be there was barely there. A+++ The food was really good - I knocked off one star because I felt the brisket was just a little too chewy and the chips were not crisp enough for my liking. Still good flavor though. Had an amazing Friday night dinner and we were all so satisfied! The food is fingers licking good and the prices are very fair. The three course feast for two is such a fair amount of food, we were both full at the end. Our server, Cameron, was really nice and upbeat and even though we took a while to order he was still so patient and smiling all the time. I had the wedge salad which was good BUT it was frustrating that paper from the tray they serve it on, for soggy from the dressing and would rip and end up on my fork. I'm picture. Not sure what happened to this place because it used to be so good. On my last visit, I discovered they no longer serve the collard greens which used to be my favorite dish. Opted for 2 meat plate. Lest to say, the meat was dry and lacked flavor. Not a lot of options for people with food sensitivities and the menu doesn't indicate options. The service was decent, although the restaurant was very cold. When asked to sit by the window, was told it's even colder there.
