If you've never tried Gus's fried chicken and you better get over there quick. It has its own process for making the crispiest juiciest chicken around. Be careful if you're sensitive to heat because it does have a little spice kick to it. It's expertly cooked and we all liked it. I had a side of the fried okra which was second to none and some turnip greens that I relished. Gus's has a pleasant atmosphere and is nestled in an old warehouse I believe. I think Gus's has the best fried chicken around. Not only that, but the Mac n' cheese is the real thing made with real cheese. I even love the finely shredded cooked slaw. There is sidewalk seating for days with good weather, and the dining room has several tables, too. There is a counter to order to-go for, or you can sit and eat at the counter. The decor seems perfect for fried chicken eating--lots of exposed brick, and some interesting paintings of blues artists. Our server today was a real easy of sunshine. He seemed to have a genuine smile on his face the entire time. I commented to my friend that he just seemed like a happy guy. The manager came by and asked how everything was. Our server Noah immediately stood out because he was super attentive the entire time without being overbearing. You can tell he actually cares about the dining experience and keeps up with his tables really well. Service alone was a 10 out of 10. Before coming in, we saw reviews complaining about a 20 minute wait for the food, but honestly that did not bother us because they let us know right away that the chicken is made fresh and would take around 15 minutes. If you know good fried chicken, you already know fresh chicken is worth the wait. I would rather wait a little longer for crispy, hot chicken than get something sitting under a heat lamp. And let me tell you, the chicken came out exactly how fried chicken should be. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, piping hot, and perfectly seasoned. The crunch had that fresh fry texture where you can actually hear it when you bite into it. For sides, I got the okra and mac and cheese. It was my first time trying fried okra and now I completely understand the hype. The seasoning on it was insanely good, especially paired with the Louisiana hot sauce. This might be the best fried chicken I've ever had. I ordered for pickup and brought it back to my hotel. It was a 15 minute walk. The chicken was still perfectly crispy and super warm while still being very juicy. Also really well seasoned--no need to dip it into anything. I got mac and cheese as well as baked beans for my side. The beans were good, but pretty standard. The Mac was great, very cheesy and a good bit of seasoning, and the noodles were aldente. This place was unexpectedly awesome! Let me explain... My mom and I were next door at Oro Brewing & noticed this cute little fried chicken place next door that sounded amazing. A couple weeks later, we came back to try. When you walk in, you seat yourself at any of the indoor tables (they also have outdoor seating). Menus are already provided next to the napkin holder. Has super old school vibes and fits right into the historic district of Mesa. Reminds me something in Globe. Tons of different options and everything is fresh and cooked to order (so your wait is about 15-20 mins). You can order À la carte, or an entire plate with sides included, or just a chicken sandwich... which is what we got and shared! Their spice levels range from 2-8 or 9 I believe our server said. Chicken tenders are level 2. The chicken was so juicy and the breading was delicious! We also tried the fried pickle spears and I definitely recommend those too! A very nice gentlemen, with a beautiful smile, was going around talking to customers throughout the dining room. When he got to us, he said we HAD to try honey with our sandwich. Just delicious. After walking around downtown Mesa for a few hours and deciding on a place that everyone could be happy with I chose Gus's. It was on my to try list for Mesa eats Yelp. Not disappointed, every bite was full of deliciousness. From the juicy chicken, well cooked sides and sweet pies. All these things fit together for a great meal. Some things go best with fried chicken and ice cold coke is one of them...they have that! Absolutely one of the best fried chicken meals I've ever had. The service was amazingly good, friendly but never intrusive. The owner or manager even made it around to check on us and others. That's perfect. I took a recent trip to Mesa AZ to check out some of the brewpubs there. I discovered that there was a Gus's fried chicken location right next door to one of them. I had heard so much about the original location and how good this chicken is, so I had to find out for myself. I was greeted at the door by a man whom I believe to be the owner, he asked if I was dining in or picking up, I stated I was dining in and was allowed to pick my table. My waitress was very nice and my order was taken promptly. I waited about 25 minutes or so for my order, and it was well worth the wait. I ordered two breasts and two tenders, I did not get any sides. This chicken is absolutely delicious. It was hot, fresh, juicy and so flavorful, it has a slight kick to it, plus there are various hot sauces you can pour on the chicken if you wish. This chicken has replaced Mrs. Knotts as my favorite American fried chicken. If you're in the Mesa area, do yourself a favor and go get this chicken! read more

Downtown Mesa's hidden gem. This place is the bomb! When you go here, ask for Curtis. Curtis is the best and his positive upbeat attitude is infectious. We had the corn nuggets (secret menu item), chicken sandwich with fries, the 3 piece (dark meat) with baked beans and Mac and cheese. For dessert we got the chocolate pie with ice cream. Always attentive, friendly, and hospitable service. And the food is always amazing. Crispy, perfectly spiced fried chicken, always juicy and delicious, I always want to order another plate as soon as I'm done. My go to sides are the coleslaw and fries. The coleslaw is creamy and sweet but not overly so with just the right amount of crunch. Never had a soggy french fry in this place and they are always perfectly seasoned. I can also attest that the Mac and cheese, collard greens, and baked beans are amazing. If you're a craft beer fan I highly suggest ordering their King Gus Imperial IPA made next door by Oro Brewing. We had to try this place, mainly because of the name of the restaurant. Gus's world famous fried chicken. Cool spot. When we entered, there is a sign instructing patrons to seat yourself. The place was packed, but still found a table. Our server Leo came right over. Very friendly, he explained how the chicken is cooked to order and could take about 15 minutes. The seasoning they use has a spicy Cajun bite. He took our order and brought our drinks right away in this reusable souvenirs cup. I ordered the special-4 wings. It comes with Cole slaw and baked beans. They offer other sides that you can substitute with. I changed out the baked beans with Mac N Cheese. You also get a slice of plain white bread that chicken sits on. Hubby ordered the 2 white pieces. He requested 2 breasts for a $1.50 more. For his sides, he ordered 2 of the baked beans. The ambience reminded me of a place from the south. Enjoyed the blues music. Our food came, piping hot! The chicken was fried to perfection. When you bite into it, it had this perfect crunch and the seasoning was spot on. Spicy, but not too spicy. The chicken did not have a heavy batter. The meat was moist and flavorful. The Cole slaw definitely complemented the chicken. Mac N cheese did not fail either. My hubby's chicken breast were also fried to perfection, the meats were moist and flavorful. Sooo I actually didn't go for the chicken. I went for the friend pickles and then I found out that there was okra and green tomatoes also and I had to get all the fried greens!!! Probably some of the best fried okra I've ever had. We've been to Gus' Fried Chicken before - actually when it opened. Once upon a time, I wanted to try all the fried chicken our state had to offer but when I finally had Gus, I thought, "why bother!" This place is good - the dark meat is so juicy, that kick of heat, and the coleslaw are divine. That is my usual order, by the way. But last night, I ordered their chicken sandwich with a side of pickle fries. My husband got his usual order of dark meat with fries and beans. He also cannot handle heat very well, but he powers through for Gus. My sandwich was good. It was tough on the outside so my bites were struggling, but I literally did not care. It was good, but I think next time I will order my usual dark meat with coleslaw and coleslaw. The pickle fries though - those are so dang good. I will order those every time and indulge a little.
