Best store bought salsa period. After stumbling upon this page, I had to try the salsa out. I bought the "Hot" and "Dragon Lips" salsas from Mothers in Costa Mesa and proceeded to chow down. "Hot" isn't very hot. I could eat it all day without breaking a sweat. However, "Dragon Lips" is pretty potent. Both taste great regardless of spiciness. Read the ingredients. The medium salsa is made with canned, processed tomatoes only (see tomato juice, calcium chloride in pic below. This is not a "fresh" homemade salsa. They also have water as an ingredient, which I have rarely seen in salsa. The flavor and consistency is OK, but certainly nothing special or above average. Finding great quality and fresh salsa can be really difficult. We originally found this brand at the oc market and the lady gave us a sample. We were INSTANTLY hooked. The quality of the ingredients plus the flavor just doesn't compare to the other salsas we have had. I love my spicy food so finding something that is actually spicy can be difficult. The dragon lips and the Private reserve are our favorites! The flavor is perfect and the spice level is great! Oh and don't even get me started on her sun dried tomato tortillas!! OK, so I'm a proud bastard. I make my own salsa. The salsa I make will make chefs weep all over the world. You will weep after comparing it to your salsa. Your family will weep for generations to follow. I have just sat and finished an entire bag of chips and a container of Lucky Habanero salsa while watching the Lakers obliterate the Hornets, and now I am weeping. My family will weep for generations to follow. The salsa was that good. No more wasting my time having my fingers smell like garlic for two days or having Habanero juice squirting in my eyes causing temporary blindness. I happened to cross by the Lucky Habanero stand over the the OC Fairgrounds last week and decided to give them a shot. It was 6 smackers for a container and 4 bucks for a bag of chips, but for 20 greenbacks, I nabbed 3 containers of salsa (they had a crazy selection, like red, green, confetti. mango, yadda yadda yadda, but I stuck with the Dragon Lips because I like my lips on fire...get your mind outta the gutter) and 2 bags of chips. I have a feeling these won't last long as the next Lakers game, a bunch of my friends are gonna cruise over. Seriously, about the best you can get! I love making my own salsa but after tasting the original habanero (before Dargon Lips came out) I haven't made any in several years. Amazing flavor, very fresh and even a whole habanero in the container if you want to spice it up a bit more. Dragon Lips is equally as good with quite a bit more heat. Far and above the best salsa I've ever had. I am partial to the Private Reserve, but I could never turn down Dragon Lips or Medium. I first met The Salsa Lady at The Meat House in Mission Viejo a few years back. It was completely by accident, The Salsa Lady was stocking the salsa that day. My husband and I went to The Meat House looking for something specific (can't remember now) but they didn't have it and we were bummed. I have been lucky enough that a good friend of mine visits family in OC at least once a month so she is able to pick up our stash (yes I said stash and it is so addicting) of very addicting and spicy salsa that we have tasted. It is worth every penny and the vendor sometimes gives discounts at the farmers market. The salsa is fresh with no preservatives but can keep for a couple weeks in the refrigerator since it is sealed. The package is usually $20 for 3 containers and 2 bags of crunchy tortilla chips. We enjoy the Dragon Lips and are waiting to try Green Monster, both are categorized as Maximum Heat. There are some mild and medium versions as well. They do ship to Whole Foods and Mothers. If you reside in OC and the order is at least $18 they will deliver to your home. I have taken the salsa to share with my coworkers and eventhough their spice threshold is not as high as mine, they also find it addicting. No other salsa has been comparable since the first taste. Hope there is a Whole Foods or Mothers closer to us soon or that the vendor is able to contract with another supermarket chain. It would also be great if they would come to the farmers market in Riverside too! read more
