    Sauteed eggplant w/ salty fish
    Samantha W.

I didn't feel like eating salad, burgers or pizza so we found this place. Chose it because by the photos it looked to be the most "authentic" in the area. There are two different menus here. If you came because you're looking for the more "authentic" food. Get the green menu. We ordered eggplant w/ salty fish, ginger/green onion chicken, seafood chow fun w/ gravy. The eggplant dish was actually pretty tasty. Eggplant was cooked properly and it was seasoned nicely 3.75/5 The seafood chow fun was ok. Not really that good. Missing that nice char wok flavor. Also the soy tasted basically like soy sauce. I thought the imitation crab, fish balls and squid rings in it were odd. Would've been better without it 2.4/5 The ginger green onion chicken looked great. But it was inedible. It was sooo dry and tough. Tasted like the chicken had been frozen for quite some time. It also needed seasoning. 0/5 Was it mind blowing? No. Was it acceptable in comparison to all the other American Chinese restaurants. Yes.

I've been for both dine in and carry out experiences and enjoyed everything I've tasted so far! The menu has a range of traditional dishes, american classics, and some Hawaiian specialities. We ordered crab rangoons both times, because we can't do without them. So cripsy, filled with a cream cheese filling, and overall very satsifying. When dining in we ordered the house fried rice, the happy family dinner, and the shrimp and scallops in garlic sauce. While all tasty, the garlic sauce was on another level! It was flavorful and savory and different from other dishes I've had from Chinese restaurants (unless I'm just ordering the wrong thing). I'd seriously eat the sauce on just about anything. When carrying out, we ordered online and my husband had no issues picking it up. We had the house fried rice and rangoons again, but this time tried the dumplings, lo mein noodles, and sesame chicken. The sesame chicken was crispy and the noodles were good. Portions were very generous too! I also grabbed a chicken katsu misubi because it intrigued me! It was good, but definitely could have used a little more sauce. We will definitely be back (we've heard the Mongolian beef is good!) and are happy to have found a neighborhood go-to spot.

BBQ mix with chicken, beef, and short rib. Rice and meat.

We tried ordering from a Lucky Wok and Grill right after the owner change and it was a mess. There were groups of people waiting to pick up food and it was unorganized at best. We came back to give Lucky Wok and Grill one more chance. Much more organized and food came out promptly but the food was disappointing. I got the BBQ Mix with beef, short rib, and chicken. I expected the BBQ flavored chicken but instead, it was an odd mix of bland and acidic. The beef was not even salted and the only decent piece of meat was the short rib. The meat was sitting on a bed of rice with rice as sides. I expected steamed vegetables but my fault for not asking I guess. Overall, I have not been impressed with the change.

Order from authentic Chinese menu. Steam chicken with garlic on the top is the best. Peking ribs and Deep fried intestines pretty good also.

I believe that due to their business model of only having a few dishes and sides and doing them really well, instead of having a lot of options, is the secret. I know that some of the sides are a bit controversial, but I happen to like them all. I do tend to typically trade the Rice Ball for Steamed Veggies when I can. That was not allowed on this visit. - 5 stars The Atmosphere - Many of these are that modern, somewhat industrial, style that is all the rage. It is functional enough but not exactly comfortable. Nor does this style hold any real personality and you can tell that like so many other commercial places these are designed to hold ANY restaurant should they change hands or locations. Gone are the days where you could recognize the restaurant by its roof or design. Now the only thing to leave the impression is the Logo. Not taking points off for this... just wandering down the lost memory lane of Hut Rooflines and Bells in a façade. - 4 stars The Staff - This staff was incredibly busy and did a great job balancing all that they had going on. Everyone I interacted with was extremely polite and willing to help in any way possible. - 4 stars The rest of the story - So in Kansas City someone decided that if the KC Royals scored 6 or more runs in a game (including ones lost) any Hawaiian Bros Rewards Members could go in and get a free Classic meal. You could order the protein that you wanted in the meal but they were not allowing any other changes as they were just too busy. So, when I went in on a Sunday afternoon the place was packed. The staff was so busy that they were scrambling to do the other tasks, like fill the napkins/straws, or empty the lobby trash. I watched the staff of 5 be continuously slammed with orders and stay at a dead run the entire time I was in the building. I placed my order and attempted to stay out of the way. I had a 25 minute wait but this was only due to the amount of internal and drive thru orders that they were keeping up with. And I must say I was impressed. At the time of writing them Hawaiian Bros has rescinded this specific program and instead now has a reward of BOGO after the KC Royals score 6 runs or more. Let's just say I wouldn't want to be the exec that had to roll that one back!

I tend not to tip in fast food locations as I don't know who would actually receive the tip and as there really wasn't much service I didn't feel the need to tip. Food was brought out quickly but staff was not very personable. This location was rather big but not many people eating there. There were a few dirty tables and the bathrooms were dirty as well. Overall, I wasn't actually too impressed by this location.

A few days ago, I went to KC for a quick trip to pick up something I cannot get repaired in MHK, and had a few hours to spend before it was ready. I was really impressed with all of the possibilities, including the green tea-coconut rice as a base, and included mix-ins/toppings such as seaweed salad, masago, and tamagoyaki without any extra cost! Longboards has been part of my story since my UMKC days. I first went after hearing all the hype,…read moreand as they've expanded, I've followed them from location to location. When they finally opened in Overland Park, I was ecstatic -- it felt like my old college staple had grown up with me. One side note that says it all: during KU Hospital orientation, HR did that classic icebreaker -- "What's your favorite restaurant?" Someone mentioned Longboards, and instantly a chorus of people chimed in with "Yeah!" That kind of reaction tells you everything -- Longboards isn't just food, it's a Kansas City cult favorite. Menu-wise, they do things differently. Think grilled burrito-style wraps or deli-style cold wraps, but you can make any of them into an "OG" (their giant version with a hard-boiled egg inside) or turn them into a rice bowl. That's what makes it fun -- the creativity of the flavors plus the flexibility to make it your own. My forever go-to is the Argentine quesadilla flat wrap -- steak, shrimp, guac, mozzarella, pico, and chimichurri ranch. It's basically surf-and-turf at a reasonable price, and the flavors just explode. Easily a 10/5. I usually grab a second item too. This time it was the WOW Kung Pao wrap -- chicken, peanuts, veggies, rice, spicy Chinese sauce. Think kung pao stir-fry, but wrapped up. Perfect balance of heat and crunch, a solid 4/5. Over the years , I've also loved the 5 Alarm Beef (spicy, but worth it). The the Cabo chicken/steak (crowd favorites), and the 619 OG (go big or go home) are prety solid too. And don't sleep on their rotating monthly creations -- some of the most fun menu items they've done. My favorite was One Time in Bangkok -- as spicy and naughty as it sounds. Basically a pad thai wrap loaded with Thai Peanut, Spicy Chinese, and 5 Alarm sauce. Absolutely amazing, and another 10/5. Honestly wish they'd make it a permanent menu item. The sauces are what really set Longboards apart. They bottle a few (Thai Peanut, 5 Alarm, Chipotle Ranch, Teriyaki), and I wish they'd sell their Spicy Chinese sauce too -- it's that good. Same with the chimichurri ranch on the Argentine -- I could honestly bathe in both of them. Pro tip: grab a bottle of Thai Peanut sauce and use it at home to instantly level-up Trader Joe's bowls. Sometimes the bottles are half off during happy hour times. I've tried their noodle bowls and rice bowls -- tasty, but rice noodles aren't my thing. And the Hawaiian sliders? Hard pass. Stick to the wraps, flat wraps, or OG-style burritos and you can't go wrong. The staff is always friendly, the food is consistent -- super quick, super fresh, always hot. Seating is limited (this location is mainly carry-out), but I love the surf-inspired vibe with the surfboard-shaped countertop. What makes Longboards stand out most is the value. They've managed to keep prices fair while maintaining high quality -- even post-COVID, when so many places either dropped standards or raised prices. That combination of affordability, creativity, flexibility, and consistency is rare. Longboards is a KC institution for a reason. Five stars every time.
