Highlights - Some of the best diner/comfort food in DFW (locally sourced!) - Cozy retro diner feel - Usually great service - Reasonable prices (eat your fill at around $12 before tax/tip) I came to Lucky's looking for new brunch options around the Uptown/Oak Lawn area. What I found was a cozy little diner with fresh locally sourced food (they actually list out where all their ingredients come from) that don't break your budget. From my visits I've had the chicken fried chicken, the chicken fried steak and their meatloaf. All three menu items impressed me without being ostentatious. The meals were simple but full of flavor. The chicken fried meats were clearly meats and the tomato jam complemented the meatloaf really well. I've heard a lot of complaints about service, but haven't personally ran into any issues with the staff. They were slightly disorganized as they seated a party of the same size before us on our first visit, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. They seem personable for the most part. Comfort food du jour: Lucky's serves up down-home cooking. They'll start you off by bringing your table a plate of fresh rolls, but be careful not to fill up on them, you'll want to eat your main course too. I love the variety of Southern sides; baked squash, fried okra, mashed potatoes, onion rings, dirty rice. The sandwiches and meats are good, but sometimes I'll go to Lucky's and order a veggie plate, 'cause sometimes I just need some yummy down-home veggies. Lucky's does "To Go" orders, but I would recommend dining in. It's a 50's style diner with artwork on the wall that is for sale. Potentially, you can walk out of Lucky's with a belly full of fried catfish and a new painting for your living room. No one could accuse Lucky's of not being unique. read more

We have been going for breakfast for about four years. It a great place for breakfast and lunch. Quick and friendly service. Always fresh. The only negatives are the scrambled eggs usually over cooked. (Scorched) They changed their menu and some of their recipes to accommodate a younger crowd but it does not seem for the better. When you go to Lucky's for breakfast, not matter how early or how late (for some reason, I've never been able to under or over sleep the breakfast crowd) you'll have to wait just a bit. But that's okay... snag a cup of coffee from the bar, get settled into people watching and get comfy. The crowd at Lucky's can only be described as eclectic. Are you straight, gay, white, black, brown, thin, fat, old, young, hot, ugly, tall, or short? If so, you'll fit right in. Are you broken up, just hooked up, hung over, just from working out, driving a hummer, or driving a hyundai? Yep, you're welcome here. This is one of the only spots in Dallas where I feel comfortable rolling out of bed, throwing on sweats, knocking the crumbs out of my eyes and going to breakfast. The only constants are the hi-larious host (who always tells me the story about his aunt "sweet pea"), the little dude with the glasses behind the bar that takes your money and the cool wait staff. And the good food. I've only been to Lucky's for breakfast, but I've been there at least 2 dozen times. Everything is awesome. They have healthy options (fruit, oatmeal) and not so healthy options. There's a big omlettee menu with LOTS of different choices and "themes". There are good Migas and breakfast tacos (served with refried beans... yummm). Biscuits are tasty. Food comes out pretty quickly-- just long enough to people watch a bit longer. Your coffee cup never gets cool and the laid back servers make sure you're happy. What can I say? At this point, I've been to Lucky's enough times to know all the breakfast menu items by heart and consider it a truly special neighborhood establishment. There must be a siren song calling me toward the biscuits because even when I'm cooking breakfast at home I want biscuits from Lucky's. In fact, I was cooking breakfast for friends the other day and asked one of them to stop at Lucky's to pick up some biscuits on the way and they just gave her a basket of them free of charge!! On my most recent visit, I was either sick or not thinking properly and ordered the oatmeal because I felt like something plain and simple - a rare occurrence for me. Well, forget about plain and simple! The oatmeal comes in a bowl the size of a swimming pool with add-your-own serving cups of brown sugar and blueberries. How I'm supposed to limit my addition of brown sugar to the bowl?...Ha! Right. The oats were rich, original (not even close to instant) oatmeal with creaminess that only comes from cooking them in what I assume must have been whole milk. The only complaint I can muster is that my side bowl of fruit salad was somewhat overloaded with filler melon (cantaloupe and honeydew) and lacked the good stuff like strawberries and pineapple. Regardless of this minor setback, the employees always make Lucky's feel warm and fuzzy inside. Just thinking about it makes me want those biscuits! Is it morning yet? read more

I have been dining at Lucky's from my very first day of living in Dallas. The food has always been good and the waitstaff nice. Came in today.... New menu... New way to pay..... Nothing good to eat. The old menu was great all American food. One of the best breakfast places in Oaklawn. WILL NEVER BE BACK. Breakfast menu is now outrageously priced... Cut in half.... You can't even get biscuits any more. WTH??? They have also reduced the lunch menu by pages I couldn't find anything on the menu breakfast or lunch that looked appealing to eat. So sad. OK, Lucky's: WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED HERE? My husband and I have been customers for more than a decade. We came back after a few months' hiatus, and we hardly recognize the place. It's like someone brought in a consulting firm to give it a makeover, when IT WAS FINE JUST THE WAY IT WAS. The warm, casual neighborhood vibe is gone -- part of the place's charm was that it felt like an actual local diner. Now it feels.... corporate. Homogenized. Mainstreamed. Fluffed. The new menu is just a disaster. One of the great things about Lucky's was its long, quirky list of dishes and descriptions. It's been reduced to a mere random handful. We were so sad to see some of our favorites gone -- my husband specifically came jonesing for a honey mustard chicken sandwich. I was looking forward to some spinach casserole as a side...alas. Gone the way of the dodo. Speaking of which: We loved the chalkboards with all the extra sides and specials and desserts. Now it boasts about "local" ingredients. From MARFA? You call that local? Even Austin is just too damn far, if you really want local. Besides, the whole locavore concept is dated and tired. People want AUTHENTICITY and QUALITY. Also: I couldn't believe the drinks menu. What is this, Applebees?? Tacky. Finally: The food. They still serve the cornbread and biscuits. But they're NOT the same. They've monkeyed with the recipes somehow, and not for the better. The cornbread used to be baked in a pan, golden yellow and moist with a strong, delicious corny flavor. Now they're pale yellow muffins... the coarse, corny crumb replaced by a whiter, cakier texture and blander flavor. The biscuits look like they used to, but they too taste different... I can't put my finger on it, but I prefer the old recipe. My husband enjoyed his substitute meal of fish and chips. I got the kitchen to make me a Reuben with turkey, which they used to offer on the menu. It was tasty -- a little light on the kraut maybe, but the turkey was nice and moist. Wish I could say the same for the slice of cake we shared for dessert: It was as dry and crumbly as dust. I still give Lucky's 3 stars, but it used to be my 5-star standby. I have been going to Lucky's since the 20th century at least five times a month and now I am not happy. The corporate chef got the stupid idea to overhaul the menu and dropping all but one fish dish! I almost exclusively go to Lucky's for the nice variety of grilled fish that were prepared grilled, blackened, or Cajun. No more! Only fried cod and chips now. The corporate chef should be fired for dropping the salmon, tilapia, trout and catfish. That is crazy! Three dinner parties left this evening after seeing the new menu. We would have left, if we had not been in a hurry. We will NOT be back for lunch or dinner until the fish is back on the menu. Corporate overlords of Lucky's, you really messed up! read more

It's okay, but that's about all I can say about the food. Complete wrap-around windows make it an excellent choice to enjoy a rain storm, or to people watch. Somewhat overrated. Sundays are busy, and there's one waiter I try to avoid, because he'll just try and rush you along. Same waiter has a heavy sigh to share, whenever I ask for honey in my hot tea. Ten years ago, this place was exceptional on every level. All my friends would meet here, regularly. Not anymore. Poor menu changes by management just run folks off. A few buddies and I crashed at a friend's place one night after a VERY long night (well.. entire weekend) of partying. I woke up Sunday morning thinking two things: 1.) Besides my dignity and debit card, what else did I lose last night? 2.) I need something..ANYTHING.. covered in cream gravy. STAT! One hour and 3 homemade mimosas later, my 5 friends and I pull into Lucky's and are greeted by their friendly staff. They're busy, but in no time they've pulled together some tables and I have overflowing baskets of delicious biscuits and cornbread all up in my face. Butter, honey, jelly, BAM! All waiting on the table for me to slather on at my leisure. The carb fairies have delivered. Our waiter was super friendly and accomodating, making suggestions, etc. My breakfast "extravaganza" came with both chicken fried chicken n' gravy (or chicken fried steak, if you choose) AND biscuits with gravy.. not to mention 2 eggs and roasted potatoes. I was practically wallowing about in my..not one, but TWO, bowls of gravy. The food is plentiful and well above average. I've been to Lucky's several times and have always left very satisfied. I have been coming to Lucky's for years. I love breakfast here on Saturday or Sunday mornings. If you love cheap comfort food, this is the place. They have all kinds of omelettes, pancakes and waffles to enjoy. Also they have breakfast specials, side orders and drinks. I seem to always get the Breakfast Sandwhich which I recommend. It's sure will water your mouth and you will love it! Huge portions here and you could share it with your other half or a friend if you are not a heavy eater. The Staff is very friendly to serve you no matter what to make that order right for you or group of friends. Also you could read the Dallas News there as well while you wait for your order for Breakfast or Brunch. I would suggest to go early on Sundays around 800A to 830A as the crowd gets busy around 9A or you will have to wait awhile and be seated. Keep in mind it's church day! It gets really busy during the hours of 9A to 1030A. So get there early before the church crowd as well. Just great Comfort food which is downright home cooking at it's best. Summary? It's a phenomenal breakfast experience! We were blown away by the service, and it only got better as the morning went on. I don't know if the guy is the owner, manager, or what, but he acted like he knew us for years and we were just old friends. He treated every customer this way! So nice, and compliments like crazy. Definitely my favorite host of all time. The server was fantastic and JUST as nice! Seriously, the service here is second to none. We've never been treated better... anywhere. After the stupendous greeting, we were even MORE blown away by the food! The food here is awesome. Just ... no words. You have to try this place. The omlette was fresh, the potatoes were awesome, and even the toast/biscuits are great! The wife got a veggie omlette which was jam packed with health, but seriously fantastic. I got the lotto omlette full of meat... because I'm a dude, and dudes eat meat! At the end of the meal, I got the bill... holy crap. Great prices. That's all I've got to say about that. This place is definitely at the top of our list for weekend breakfast places! May try it for lunch sometime too! Food was outstanding, service was amazing, and prices were great. I love the feel of this place! I came here for breakfast with my lovely boss. I was in the mood for something light. I had the "light breakfast" which consisted of oatmeal fresh seasonal fruit and my choice of a bagel or a muffin. I went with the bagel, it was a perfect portion for me, and it was delicious. Last time I came, I tried the most amazing grilled cheese I have ever had in my life. Perfect cheese to bread ratio! Hands down the best classic American diner food I've ever had. A friend and I went into this place on a whim and we were just blown away. Our first impressions were off a standard diner, but then we noticed the Farm 2 Table blackboard that lists where each ingredient comes from with incredible specificity. Our server gave us an option of biscuits or cornbread for the table, we chose both and while I think the cornbread was a little better, they were both soft and delicious. For the entrees, I ordered the chicken tenders with creamed corn and sweet potatoes as sides while my friend ordered the chicken fried steaks with double fried okra. My chicken tenders were pretty good, but my friends chicken fried steak was the champion of this meal. The meat was perfectly cooked and the breading had just the right amount of crunch. Overall, this place does traditional American food right. Honestly, I can't find a single thing about this place that I do not like. I can't wait to go back. read more

I "used" to drive 25 miles one way to go to Luckys for breakfast on Sunday but it appears Luckys has saved me some gas money. What made them unique was they were a classic "diner" in the middle of Highland Park. Typically, you don't see a restaurant with lines that stretch out the door change their menu but to my dismay, that's exactly what happened. My friend and I went to Luckys and his normal Sunday breakfast was no longer available. I ordered the usual stack of pancakes and instead received some fru-fru stack of cinnamon bisquick. What a huge disappointment I asked our server if they were under new mgt and he informed us that they simply wanted to change the menu. One of my favorite breakfast joints in Dallas. Also home to the "Sleaziest, Greasiest Grilled Cheese" in town - a hangover masterpiece. The migas are awesome! French toast is amazing. My stepdad got the cardiac arrest inducing Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs on one trip and he was in heaven. The only downside is the wait. While it's rarely more than 15 minutes, if you get seated near the bar area, expect to have people literally standing right at your table staring at your food, frothing at the mouth. It's kind of annoying. But if you ask the host to make sure to sit you somewhere else without regard to the time you're gonna wait, I'm sure he'd have no problem! Lucky's isn't the same... Sad!!!! I haven't been to Lucky's for over a year and today I was excited about going again. This use to be my favorite place. I don't know what happened, but Lucky's has gone far away from what it use to be. It use to have a exciting energy with lots of people waiting to get inside and dine. The host always made us laugh. We arrived at 830am on a Sunday, which is prime time; however the restaurant was only half full... Hmmmm... The menu has changed and they removed a lot of the classic favorites. I tried the new Huevos rancheros and my buddy ordered the omelet, which came with potatoes and a biscuit. Both dishes lacked flavor and value. My tortillas were burnt and everything needed salt and pepper. I seldom (once a year) add salt to my food. I only had a few bites of my breakfast and asked for the check. The server never asked if everything was ok, but if you saw our plates after asking for the the check, it was obvious something wasn't right. I think the lack flavor, customer service, and fun staff, is probably driving the people away. It will be awhile and a lot of Yelper's saying they improved before I go back. read more

No more Lucky's breakfast special or any of the things that used to make this place great. The food is still good but missing that down home feel. After our return trip to Lucky's today, it didn't really stack up to the memory and we left kind of disappointed. We had visions of waffles without the sugary compote saucy topping, fresh flavors in the egg dishes, and reasonable prices. The reality the second time around was less impressive. The strawberry syrupy mess on top of the waffle left it kind of limp and sad. My migas plate was ginormous, but the eggs were not that tasty and the hash browns were significantly underseasoned. Finally, for the three of us, the bill somehow rang up to about $12pp for a breakfast dish and coffee - no juice, no sides, no desert - just an egg plate and coffee. YIKES. We still love the diner feel, the friendly service, and the quick coffee refills, but I think the time has come to venture out for some more tasty fare. read more

The chicken fried steak is probably one of the best I've ever had, and let's not forget, I kinda think of myself as a CFS-expert. The steak batter was zesty and the gravy was creamy-- what else could you ask for? Husband had an "Eats" omlette which was huge and jam packed with three different kinds of meat. I'm not usually a fan of fruit flavored tea but the peach tea at Lucky's was good and not too sweet! There's a chalkboard of weekly specials... I think I saw fried meatloaf on Thursdays..I will be back. If you're a conservative person, this place would probably make you uncomfortable-- it's in Oak Lawn and like I said, it is very fabulous. Despite the fact that they were about to (30 in til) close no one rushed us or sent us away. After studying the delicious menu ops, I settled for their favorites Mom's meatloaf with 2 sides. My brother had bacon cream cheese chicken + 2 sides and both us got a bread basket! Having a bread basket as side should have been a sign of things to come... They are GENEROUS with their portions. My meat loaf was moist and delicious, their baked squash was served like mashed potatoes and their spinach casserole was like artichoke dip. I swear my plate weighed pounds. My brothers chicken was interesting ( i have never heard of) chicken breast with a layer of cream cheese, layered with bacon, and topped with tomatoes. His 2 sides, tree; yes a tree, of broccoli and a basket of onion rings. All this food was enough to serve more than 2 people, def took a box to go and it only set us back about $20. I was impressed with everything and look forward to visit the diner at another time (breakfast does sound yummy). The place is decorated like a 50s diner and their counter is a bar ( or may be i was drunk with food and thought it was a bar...) The rest is totally unpredictable- service is always efficient but not always friendly, wait times vary from none to lines that wrap around outside, the patrons range from families to obnoxious drunks and drag queens. Basically, it's a solid choice that I'll keep returning to when in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit. read more

This place is good, but not great or 5-star worthy. I had already heard so many good reviews about this place. So, on my first visit, I may have been expecting too much. The wait (at 11am on a Sunday morning) was not unbearable. And it was probably half as long as Breadwinners on McKinney. Plus, they have self-serve coffee at the bar for waiting patrons. But as for the coffee, I wasn't too impressed. I was hoping to get a strong coffee but this was pretty watery and tasteless. I was able to get some iced coffee as well and that was just okay. I might be a little bit of a coffee snob but what's a Sunday morning without a strong cup of coffee? The service was really great here. From the host to the bartender to our server, everyone was really friendly. They roam the restaurant re-filling drinks and I never felt like I had to flag down a waiter. As for the food, my migas were just okay. Not great, but just okay. The lady friend had the "light breakfast" which included a bagel with cream cheese, grits and fruit. She liked her meal but said the grits (even with butter added) were "a little bland." The price was a little higher than expected but the place seems to be packed, so they are doing something right. We'll be back but will have to explore the menu beyond the migas and "light breakfast" order. read more

We went to Lucky's cafe for brunch on Sunday. There were 4 of us so we had to wait a little bit to get seated which is understandable but there was not much waiting area. We felt like we were in everbody's way. Other than that we all had a great experience there. The host was very nice and welcoming and the waiter was great too. I had the banana and pecan French toast. It was unbelievably good. My husband had the Grilled Tuna and eggs which he was pretty happy with. One of my friends got an omelette which came with a cup of oatmeal. She said the omelette was okay but oatmeal is really delicious. Hmmm... I'd like to install one of these in my kitchen. Aside from the drawer of biscuits, Lucky's is the quintessential greasy spoon joint with lots of menu items that are good for what ails ya', and a really top notch staff. My personal favorites are the migas and the L.B.S.. Try and make it early for breakfast on the weekends, because the place is definitely packed by 10am. read more

He then went out of his way and got me a newspaper where I could look through more apartments he thought were 'definitely me.' They had a free appetizer of biscuits and gravy which was amazing, and I don't even really like biscuits and gravy ( I know... not American, right).
