Lucky's has died, it is no longer. They have sold out and gone to the trendy, pompous "Farm to Table" concept now on every street corner and forsaken it's comfort soul. The meat-and-three traditional and genuine "diner" concept that set it apart has been tossed aside. So disappointing. So much for being unique and true to one's self. And, as a note....when a customer orders an item off your menu and you say to them "that is not a diet item" and judging and shaming them - it's not nice. Stop dictating to me what you think I should be eating. So much for individualism and personal choice. Wrong. read more

My favorite little cafe in a long time! Simple but delicious menu. My waiter, Jim, was brilliant on recomending the 9 grain toast. OMG! So so good! By far the best in a long time. Custom omelette was perfect - lots of yummy optioms and good amount od all of it when it came to my table. Home fries are fantastic! It does get crowded in the morning so try to get there before the brunch crowd. I enjoyed reading the paper with breakfast, you can always ask for one if needed. It is also difficult to find parking if you can't find a space in front of the restaurant. As a foodie, love the fresh and local produce they serve. Luckys is a treasured spot in my life. It's just such a classic greasy spoon with a farm to table hip urban millennial vibe. The waitstaff is surly but have all worked here for a million years and know their stuff. This little place is a step back into simpler times of the 50's diner. Clean, cute with excellent service. No wait which made us happy on a Sunday afternoon. My fiance got the patty melt and fries. The patty melt was cooked to perfection, fries were perfectly cooked. I struggled because I know that this place has a reputation for exceptional meatloaf which is described by the menu as being covered in white cheddar and tomato jam. When the meatloaf came out, there was no white cheddar in sight. The tomato jam appeared somewhat gelatinous. The meatloaf didn't have a whole lot of flavor and the texture was somewhat mushy. There was a little bit of white cheddar in a few of the bites but it wasn't memorable. My sides were roasted Brussel sprouts and sweet potatoes. The sweet potatoes didn't have a whole lot of flavor. No spice, brown sugar, butter, nothing but roasted potatoes. The Brussel Sprouts were the best part-browned to perfection with delicious freshness. They were perfect. The saving grace to this meal however was the biscuits. I could have eaten them by themselves. Absolutely flaky, delicious, full of flavor and an incredible flavor paired with the honey. The food at Luckys always hits the spot when I'm on the mood for home cooking. We don't usually get an appetizer, but we had the fried pickles. They were just a hair under cooked and slightly mushy, but the flavor was good. I would get them again and ask for them to be well done. For lunch, I went with the Wednesday special which was Chicken Fried Chicken and had whipped potatoes and roasted Brussel Sprouts on the side. The chicken was perfectly cooked. Crunchy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. The potatoes were just the way I like them and I've yet to see anywhere do Brussel Sprouts any better. Funky cafe with great food! We started off with the biscuits and cornbread, which was a fun diner-classic, but they were a little dry. I got the chicken fried chicken with a side of mashed potatoes and green beans. The chicken was extremely moist and the gravy was delicious! Definitely top 3 chicken fried chicken's I've ever had! The potatoes had skins in them, which wasn't my fav, but the green beans were rockstar and had a refreshing crunch. I will definitely return to try more of their menu! This place isn't shy on their champagne-to-orange juice ratio either. read more

The pancakes here changed my life. My teammates and I landed here for brunch a few months ago while visiting Dallas for a competition. They have your usual brunch fare. (And they were able to seat about 8 of us on a weekend)! The place felt large but cozy and had that authentic diner feel. If you come here you gotta try the pancakes! Came here this morning after going to Cafe Brazil around the corner, where the wait staff never acknowledged us after sitting at a table for 20 minutes. Don't like being ignored. Glad we went to Luckys. My daughter was taking me out as a Mother's Day gift. I give the service 5 out of 5 stars, the food 4. The patrons get 10 stars. The place was crowded. The host greeted us with a smile and hello upon entering. He was very pleasant. Kudos. He took our name. We waited only a little while. There were two handsome men with kickass beards sitting by the front door where we waited. I leaned over with a smile and told them I loved their beards and to keep it up...but I digress. The host called us and we were seated. Our waiter was wonderful. We ordered and were served within a relatively short time. My coffee was refilled repeatedly. Big thumbs up there. They have good coffee. I ordered the veggie eggs Benedict. 4 stars there only because although it was good, for my taste it needed more flavor in the way of seasoning. I will try something else next time. Can't say I minded too much as the service rocked. The fun happened when I asked for the check and the waiter said "Oh, your friends paid for it." When I looked at him confused and said "My friends?" He proceeded to say "They said to say, 'Power to the Beard.' Lol. How cool is that? What sweethearts! This place definitely has a local diner feel with a bar with draft beer and liquor and booth seating. So far I have been here twice. First time was on a Thursday for their chicken fried steak night. I ordered mashed potatoes and creamed corn, my husband ordered chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts. Everything we ate was great, and everything tasted home made. They gave you cornbread and yeast rolls prior to, and the cornbread muffins were GREAT. The second time we went I wasn't all that impressed, but the first time made up for it. Service was slow, and our patty melts were dry and flavorless. Fries were good, but not enough to make up for the terrible patty melt. Overall this was not a very enjoyable experience. The waitress seemed very annoyed that my three year old daughter was eating lunch with us. She did not bring my daughter silverware, a plate for biscuits, or even ask for her order, all of which I found very rude. She even went out of her way to try and take the sugar packet container that was keeping my daughter quietly entertained. Once the food came I was disappointed again. I got the grilled chicken which was dry and under seasoned. My side of spinach had no seasoning as well. The only thing that had flavor was the side of broccoli which was delicious so I was not happy that a side of broccoli meant just one piece. On top of everything I had just one cup of water to wash everything down because the waitress did not come around with refills until we were done with our food. What I found was a cozy little diner with fresh locally sourced food (they actually list out where all their ingredients come from) that don't break your budget. From my visits I've had the chicken fried chicken, the chicken fried steak and their meatloaf. All three menu items impressed me without being ostentatious. The meals were simple but full of flavor. The chicken fried meats were clearly meats and the tomato jam complemented the meatloaf really well. I've heard a lot of complaints about service, but haven't personally ran into any issues with the staff. They were slightly disorganized as they seated a party of the same size before us on our first visit, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. They seem personable for the most part. They'll start you off by bringing your table a plate of fresh rolls, but be careful not to fill up on them, you'll want to eat your main course too. I love the variety of Southern sides; baked squash, fried okra, mashed potatoes, onion rings, dirty rice. The sandwiches and meats are good, but sometimes I'll go to Lucky's and order a veggie plate, 'cause sometimes I just need some yummy down-home veggies. Lucky's does "To Go" orders, but I would recommend dining in. It's a 50's style diner with artwork on the wall that is for sale. Potentially, you can walk out of Lucky's with a belly full of fried catfish and a new painting for your living room. No one could accuse Lucky's of not being unique. read more

When you go to Lucky's for breakfast, not matter how early or how late (for some reason, I've never been able to under or over sleep the breakfast crowd) you'll have to wait just a bit. But that's okay... snag a cup of coffee from the bar, get settled into people watching and get comfy. The crowd at Lucky's can only be described as eclectic. Are you straight, gay, white, black, brown, thin, fat, old, young, hot, ugly, tall, or short? If so, you'll fit right in. Are you broken up, just hooked up, hung over, just from working out, driving a hummer, or driving a hyundai? Yep, you're welcome here. This is one of the only spots in Dallas where I feel comfortable rolling out of bed, throwing on sweats, knocking the crumbs out of my eyes and going to breakfast. The only constants are the hi-larious host (who always tells me the story about his aunt "sweet pea"), the little dude with the glasses behind the bar that takes your money and the cool wait staff. And the good food. I've only been to Lucky's for breakfast, but I've been there at least 2 dozen times. Everything is awesome. They have healthy options (fruit, oatmeal) and not so healthy options. There's a big omlettee menu with LOTS of different choices and "themes". There are good Migas and breakfast tacos (served with refried beans... yummm). Biscuits are tasty. Food comes out pretty quickly-- just long enough to people watch a bit longer. Your coffee cup never gets cool and the laid back servers make sure you're happy. What can I say? At this point, I've been to Lucky's enough times to know all the breakfast menu items by heart and consider it a truly special neighborhood establishment. There must be a siren song calling me toward the biscuits because even when I'm cooking breakfast at home I want biscuits from Lucky's. In fact, I was cooking breakfast for friends the other day and asked one of them to stop at Lucky's to pick up some biscuits on the way and they just gave her a basket of them free of charge!! On my most recent visit, I was either sick or not thinking properly and ordered the oatmeal because I felt like something plain and simple - a rare occurrence for me. Well, forget about plain and simple! The oatmeal comes in a bowl the size of a swimming pool with add-your-own serving cups of brown sugar and blueberries. How I'm supposed to limit my addition of brown sugar to the bowl?...Ha! Right. The oats were rich, original (not even close to instant) oatmeal with creaminess that only comes from cooking them in what I assume must have been whole milk. The only complaint I can muster is that my side bowl of fruit salad was somewhat overloaded with filler melon (cantaloupe and honeydew) and lacked the good stuff like strawberries and pineapple. Regardless of this minor setback, the employees always make Lucky's feel warm and fuzzy inside. Just thinking about it makes me want those biscuits! Is it morning yet? read more

I have been dining at Lucky's from my very first day of living in Dallas. The food has always been good and the waitstaff nice. Came in today.... New menu... New way to pay..... Nothing good to eat. The old menu was great all American food. One of the best breakfast places in Oaklawn. WILL NEVER BE BACK. Breakfast menu is now outrageously priced... Cut in half.... You can't even get biscuits any more. WTH??? They have also reduced the lunch menu by pages I couldn't find anything on the menu breakfast or lunch that looked appealing to eat. So sad. Such an iconic and great restaurant in Dallas now isn't worth eating at. Changes aren't always good and they have for sure messed up with this one. read more
