This review is just for the yeast donuts, which I took to go. These are probably my favourite donuts in town. They're light and fluffy yet dense enough to make you feel like you've had something substantial. And the donut base isn't really sweet at all. To me, it's the perfect donut. Other donuts are either too heavy or too light. My favourite of their donuts is the pistachio. It's a nice chewy, lightly sweetened and lightly nutty donut. Their other donuts seem quite rich in comparison. I did also love the lemon meringue though. It's a sweeter donut with the meringue topping but the tart lemon curd filling balances it out perfectly. I love that they have a huge selection of seasonals! During Hawaiian month, I've tried the upside down pineapple cake and the Hawaiian fritter. The fritter was fun, sweet and a lil savoury, and topped with pieces of Spam! The pineapple upside down cake was too sweet. read more

Lucky's Donuts, where you'll be lucky if you're presented with more than 1-2 option for a donut, no matter the time of day! Cheesy word play aside, this place is SEVERELY overrated. I've begrudgingly eaten here about 5 times now, and each time is just as sad and disappointing as the last. Today was a real deal breaker for me, when I decided to try a chocolate chip cookie, due to there being zero remotely appetizing looking donuts available. It was a rock hard, tasteless, semi-burnt disc of broken dreams. I had to heat it up in the microwave for 2 minutes with a cup of water in order to make it barely edible. On to the donuts... I have tried two of what should be fairly standard donuts, ruined by Lucky's incessant damning need to be "quirky and interesting": the Chocolate Sourdoughnut - a truly disgusting, chewy mess that tastes like neither chocolate nor sourdough, with a texture that should be outlawed, and the Chocolate donut (the proper name has passed my mind at the moment, but it's the only other chocolate donut they carry) which tasted more of olive oil than anything remotely resembling a chocolate donut. The texture was also off. The rest of the donuts I have had from here largely fall victim to the aforementioned problem of Lucky s focusing more on what seems "inventive" and less on flavours that work together/as a donut. The only donut I did enjoy here, and this is just a personal opinion, is the PB&J donut. As boring as it may sound at first,the classic flavour pairing does work as a donut. Everything else is a pass for me! If you're looking for a donut, I suggest looking elsewhere. Just a side tip I would pass on Cartems too, as I could probably copy and paste this review for them, with the exception of the abhorrent cookie. read more

OMG seriously. The most amazing donuts!!!!!! I first tried them back in June last year and ever since then I've been hooked! I wish they had more locations. I've tried almost every kind, it's nice to be able to order online and then pick them up! The simplistic original glazed donut is just melt in your mouth! The only donut I would complain about is the chocolate long john! It really surprised me they put vanilla cream inside of it. That's really gross! It should just be a simple chocolate long john! My other favourite, when in season is the raspberry Bismarck!! So delicious!!! If you haven't tried them I suggest you do! I was visiting from out of town and I went to 49th Parallel to grab coffee and saw Lucky's​ Doughnuts. I wish I could've eaten one of each. They had a great selection of old fashioned but some with different icings (salted caramel, lemon poppyseed, etc.). Their French cruellers looked a bit different than the ones I'm used to having. A fresh batch just came out with the icing still hot. My gosh! I'm particular about my donuts and this was one of the best cruellers if not THE best I've eaten. You see, I am not a fan. I've heard so many raving accolades of this place and my expectations were HIGH. Maybe too high. First of all, they didn't have the doughnuts I wanted. I was hoping for Chocolate or Coconut but they had neither. Only ones they had left were, Apple Bacon fritter, Long Johns, Salted caramel, Chocolate croissants and Honey Glazed. So I got the Salted caramel, my sis got chocolate croissant and my little guy Long John. Salted caramel was all right. The caramel was chewy which I really liked but wasn't really salted to a point I would really notice and I feel so bad saying this and I truly do; I prefer Cartem's doughnuts. There I said it. Will I be back? Maybe? I don't spend $3.00+ on doughnuts very often. It's little bit too expensive for my taste and when I do, I want it to be memorable and be something that I crave to a point I have to have it. And this didn't do it for me. The space is really nice though. I love the exposed bricks, the ambience and the funky vibe you get from the people who work there but the doughnuts, not quite for me. I am giving it 3 stars because I do like the space and their coffee. Maybe I will give it one more try and have their coconut or chocolate one next time and it will be the game changer for me but until then, Cartems will have to do for me. read more

As you can see from the reviews before mine, there are varied opinions about the doughnuts at Lucky's. I think this might be a place that you just have to go and see for yourself. That being said, I will add my two cent. I'm impressed. The creme brûlée doughnut was amazing. I'm not concerned with the price, which many naysayers cite as a turn off. Come on folks, it's fun, different, and unique. The bonus is that Lucky's is inside a very hip and beautiful coffee shop. Next time I'll bring a good book or magazine and spend a lazy afternoon, eating yummy doughnuts, and people watching. read more

Checked this place out mid-afternoon on a Friday and about a third of the donut case was empty--good sign right? RIGHT! The salted caramel old fashioned donut was crunchy, sticky, and a little salty on certain bites with thin flakes. The thumbprint donut had a little bit of cream on top, and was super fluffy and flaky. If I wasn't visiting for a short weekend, I would've wanted to try an entire dozen (and I don't even eat donuts)! read more

The atmosphere in here is warm, welcoming, and hopping! It feels more like a brew pub in there, ambience wise, than a coffee and donuts place. The gal behind the counter was super friendly and clearly loved talking about donuts! It was a treat just to chat with her. We had a mix of gluten free people and regular eaters, so we got a variety. Of the gluten free donuts purchased, the vanilla ring was "meh" (generic gluten free mediocre chewiness), the vanilla ring w mulberry sauce was "meh with tasty sauce on top," and the double chocolate was UH-mazing. I think that the 49th Parallel/Lucky's team is my new favourite coffee shop venue in Mt Pleasant. The space is really open, well-designed, and has a large variety of seating options, which is nice. I like to come in with my lappy, for evening work dates with friends, or on my own. And of course, the doughnuts are just great. I've tried the coconut bismark, the pistachio orange honey, and salted caramel. Of these, the coconut was my favourite - fluffy doughnut with light, airy cream in the middle and toasted coconut flakes sitting on a cloud of housemade meringue on top. YUM! Pistachio orange honey was delightful. Salted caramel was good... but not my faves. For me the caramel on top was just too chewy in contrast to the doughnut. I can't wait to try more varieties! If you cut a doughnut in two, turn it into a sandwich, fill it with strawberries, tasty syrup, a pint of whipped cream, then serve it on a nice plate, is it still a doughnut? I'm constantly confused by the boundaries of baked goods. When does a doughnut become a cake? When does a cake become a cookie? When does a cookie become a bread? Is a bagel just a chewy doughnut?! They look the same! They're all made with flour, maybe eggs, possibly butter. Sometimes it's impossible to tell the difference. Lucky's Doughnuts, treads the fine line between making doughnuts and making cakes. These aren't your classic sugary treats, not a simple jelly dough ball in sight. Some would call these doughnuts "gourmet" but I would call them "confusing". Convention has almost been thrown out the window here. If you have to eat your doughnut with a knife and fork, it's clearly not a doughnut anymore! But at $3+ you'll be expecting a little more than usual anyway. Something a little different, something with a sense of occasion. The 49th Parallel Cafe offers the perfect setting for the occasion. The interior has a modern feel that looks sexy and produces a nice atmosphere. But like most modern cafes you'll realise that although the seats look fancy, they aren't the most comfortable to sit on. You'll want to stay for a little longer once your doughnut is doughnuthing, but the fancy chairs probably wont allow. At $3+ a pop, you'll be more likely to make this the odd delightful treat, rather than a regular dozen. A dozen of what though, I'm not sure. Doughnuts? Cakes? Bagels? So anyway this was my first time going here and holy craptoly 3$ for a Donut?? I have to admit though they were pretty good. I had an original glazed one because honestly I do not feel like anything too adventurous (talking bacon etc - keep stuff like this away from me when I eat something associated with a thought of sweet pastry). I got my second Lucky's doughnut from 49th. But if you're wondering why you're just hearing about it now it's because I took a bite and threw it out. It was back in October. It was my birthday. My sister knows I am a doughnut monster. It was a terrible birthday present. This time I ate it all, but as a doughnut connoisseur (which I TOTALLY am), I found it umimpressive. Fancy flavours, unique looking, smells amazing, but tastes alright. It actually tastes like those Chinese doughnuts you get with congee. And that's not a bad thing - except they ALL taste like that. It's disappointing in the grand scheme of things. Doughnuts are my everything so I keep hearing I should go to Cartems. My people are convinced it won't let me down. Let's hope so. A three dollar doughnut better be extremely tasty. These weren't. They were average...a step above Tim Horton's, but a few steps below Cardum's or Voodoo. They're thick and on the dry side, and basically the opposite of a Krispy Kreme (which I like to call the "doughnut shake"). I can see the "old fashioned" inspiration. I just don't like them all that much. They've certainly put a lot of work into the space. But it's as if the designers went through a checklist of "hipster furnishings" and checked them off one by one. Edison bulbs? Check. Artificially worn wood panels? Check. Worn old lounging chairs by a fireplace? Check. Bored-looking barista? Check. The problem is that it doesn't seem to have any soul when you put it together. Sure, the Edison bulbs are kinda cool, but when I was there (a week after opening), the price tags were still on them. Nothing says "worn in" like a price tag. And there isn't a comfortable seat in the house. The leather chairs in the back have a disturbing gooie-ness too them, the main tables don't have backs on them, and the metal chairs with backs remind me of something you'd find in your grandpa's elementary school detention room. The coffee was worth the price - good quality, and expertly prepared. It'll help when the place gets worn in. I'll try back in a few weeks, and I hope they up their doughnut game...I'm tired of venturing into Gastown for those. In terms of coffee in the 'hood, they've got stiff competition with JJ a block South and Matchstick (one of the best in the city) a few blocks East. I'm not sure why I'd come here. read more

It's not a secret that I dislike doughnuts. They are very often greasy, lack of flavour, filled with generic custards and jam and at times covered with overly sweet glaze. Lucky's Doughnut shows that doughnuts can taste great when they are fresh and made right. Hidden inside the 49th Parallel cafe, the place has some of the best coffees and doughnuts in town! I highly recommend their coffee and doughnut of the day combo for $4 if you are not picky. I once had their chocolate doughnut and it was spectacular. For at least $3 each, I had to be making a ton of money to afford them but they are quite a treat once in a while. read more

Fancy donuts - I was ok paying the $3 price tag for the salted caramel (!) donut. Even better heated up, I took the Krispy Kreme advice at 8 seconds in the microwave. The salted caramel was reminiscent of a caramel apple - except a bit softer. It's ooey gooey chewy. I could have used a few more salt crystals sprinkled on top. Lucky's Doughnuts provides just as the name suggests: doughnuts. Although they are tasty, I am of the strong opinion they are good not great, and I think the hype may make the shop a bigger success than perhaps it should be. These may seem like strong words, and as such, I feel I should explain. Lucky's makes hand-made doughnuts on site. In my opinion, if they're fresh and/or made from scratch on site, doughnuts can be pretty spectacular. Even if they're not spectacular, it's almost a certainty that they will still be better than chain store or grocery store doughnuts. With this said, Lucky's doughnuts are most certainly better than chain donuts or grocery store doughnuts, but they aren't spectacular either. As part of Lucky's appeal, the doughnuts made on site come in standard and "premium" flavours such as salted caramel, bacon-apple fritter, peanut butter and jelly, etc. Now, the doughnuts I have tried are pretty good, but the doughnuts have been inconsistent in quality. One day the fritter was dense and full of flavour, the next time, the outside was overly hard and the inside dry. I thought, maybe this was just my bad luck or a malady that could fall onto fritter type doughnuts, but I have found similar scenarios for some of the cake doughnuts, as have other people I have talked with. Part of my negative attitude towards Lucky's could come from each donut being $2 to $4 each. I feel a doughnut, even if made from scratch, shouldn't cost you $4+. In the scheme of things a plain glazed doughnut will cost you $2, while something with filling or a fritter will set you back $3.50 to $4. To add to this, I have got to Lucky's from time to time since it first opened. It may just be a misconception on my part, but I also feel the doughnuts have gotten smaller as time has gone on. Not a lot smaller, but still noticeable for myself who doesn't go all the time. In my opinion, other hand-made shops such as Lee's Donuts on Granville Island or Duffin's Donuts are better options for doughnuts. Mind you both these other places can also have days of less than optimal quality, but you can get a dozen doughnuts for less than ~$12 instead of getting just 4 for the same price. However, with everything said, almost every time I've gone to Lucky's people are lined up ready to get their hands on a doughnut. So, it's obvious they're appealing to some people and are definitely doing something right to warrant so many customers. Not including the 49th Parallel Coffee shop sharing the same space, Lucky's gets a 3 out of 5. read more

This coffee shop has been on my hit list for a while now, however, I was on an cleanse so this was put on the back burner for over a month. I finally went in today with my best friend to get some tea and to finally try their Lucky Donuts. I was first made aware of Lucky Donuts while stalking a girl who had a bright orange/yellow box of Lucky donuts heading to the Broadway skytrain station. Apparently, according to the lady at the til, Lucky Donuts is their house brand of donuts made fresh in house. I am over Cartem's donuts, these are now my new favorite addiction. My best friend and I tried the PB/J donut 'cause he is Peanut Butter (his nick name) and I am jelly (my nickname). Okay....the nicknames are true, however, that is not the real reason I picked this. I was actually craving something fruit filled rather than chocolaty or coffee flavored and this seemed to fit the bill. The donut tasted exactly like the kindergarten school memory of PB-J sandwiches at lunch time, wrapped in yeast and fluffiness. The donut was really filling, therefore, we split it between us. I had a strawberry apple tea, however, the water was so hot that I ended up spitting the water out onto the donut plate and onto my best friends face by accident. I actually burned my tongue. The décor is nice and uses a lot of clean and winter cabin themed tones. The cups they serve with are light blue compliment the décor and pair very well with the brown tones of the rest of the place. The prices for the beverages are market prices. The donuts are pricey at $3.50, however, you get what you pay for. I would take these over any other donuts in the area. The prices on the menu include taxes which is a first in the city to list the whole price. This is awesome and more establishments need to take note of this and it makes things so much easier for the customer to be prepared. The service was awesome. I snuck into 49th Parallel the other day on the premise of getting coffee, but really I was there to eyeball Lucky's Doughnuts. And man did they look good! Big and beautifully homemade, they put TimmyHo's to shame. I couldn't decide between being boring with a basic flavour or busting out with a more creative one, so I used my friend as an excuse and bought both...suspecting I could ask her for a taste, or two. The glazed old-fashioned was incredible, melt in your mouth goodness. The PBJ was ridiculously delicious...reminded me of the old-school jelly doughnuts, but in another league, and loved the peanut butter take. I ended up forgetting to buy coffee - now I have to go back and face that doughnut case again, darn it. read more

Went in as I was driving by...really love the look of this place. It's got this clean, rustic look that I love. I love the counter being kind of central to everything as well. I got myself a salted caramel donut and a regular glazed ( I am a sucker for these... ). Salted caramel was good but a bit doughier than I normally like but good flavor and something different. The regular glazed was great - nice portion, soft but still got a nice chew to it. Definitely will be back to try the others and have a sit down. read more

I love a $5 coffee and donut. Despite being busy, there's always just enough seating too. The donuts are pricey compared to Duffins or some other places, but the venue is much nicer and the coffee more than makes up for it. I have eaten "gourmet" donuts in NY and Calgary so the $3 per price tag didn't give me quite the sticker shock that one might expect. But for about 3 or 4 times the price of a grocery store bake shop donut, my expectation of a Lucky's Donut was still pretty high. To a certain extent they delivered. I had a taste of the Orange Pistachio Honey and the Coconut Bismarck. The Orange Pistachio had a lovely subtle orange flavor and was generously coated in chopped pistachios. The texture was very cake-like but just on the the cusp of dryness. Maybe it was a business development ploy to sell more coffee to wash it down?! The Coconut Bismarck was very pretty to look at. It was topped with a golden brown meringue and shaved toasted coconut. The glaze was sweet but tempered by the less sweet donut dough and the deliciously smooth vanilla custard cream filling. This one was my favorite of the 2. I highly recommend going with friends so you can share a few different flavors. read more

SO, my friends and I spontaneously decided to go to this donut place since EVERYBODY have been raving about it since it opened. We walked in and looked at the selections and the shelf was half empty. There were only a few choices left so I bought the matcha donut and the French Crueller. They were pretty decent tasting, although the donuts were a bit dry and the crueller tasted a little too eggy. Honestly, I'd probably rather eat the donuts at Tim Horton's because it was quite pricey for a small donut. Also, when we were making our selection of donuts, the man behind the counter made us feel very uncomfortable, giving us looks because we were taking a while to pick (even though there was no one behind us). In full disclosure, I didn't go into the 49th parallel, rather I was lucky enough to have 8 very delicious doughnuts delivered last night for a mini birthday celebration. Yep, no birthday cake for me - a doughnut reps my style these days. (It could also be because I'm pregnant and am pretty much over sweets but seriously, there aren't enough doughnuts in the world to quench my insatiable fix!) I tried a few different flavors -- the salted carmel, the chocolate with sprinkles, the one with pistachios. Hands down, the best doughnuts my mouth has ever had the good fortune to meet. It was both painful and reassuring to go to bed last night knowing that there were still a few lucky' doughnuts just waiting to be savored..... I agree with George W's review. Absolutely amazing. Usually I associate donuts with insubstantial TimmyHo's fair. These donuts are clearly made by someone who truly loves donuts. The PB&J and lemon Bismarck donuts are fantastic. Now THIS is an alternative donut shop that works. Lucky's has raised donuts, cake donuts and crullers. Their flavour choices are superb, the donuts' textures are perfect and the variety is substantial. So as not to throw myself into a new Body Mass Index level I decided to only try three donuts on my first visit. Tried a cruller, a bacon apple fritter and a sugar cinnamon cake donut. Each one is great. I could complain about the little things: not enough bacon, cruller could be bigger, etc. But really, these are tiny, foodie complaints that tend to get blown way out of proportion, even from an ashamed food snob such as myself. The price is high, but I believe it is justified to the very last bite. And now that Erin I. has notified me of the salted caramel donut I'll be back even sooner than anticipated. Main Street is getting loaded with a variety of food choices these days, and Lucky's is the most exciting one I know of. Just make sure not to confuse Lucky's, which is inside the new 49th Parallel coffee shop at the corner of 13th, with Lucy's down the street. read more

I don't eat doughnuts very often. But when I do, I eat Luckys Doughnuts (truth be told, Cartems, too). Yes, these are not everyday doughnuts prices. But they're also not everyday doughnuts. Nor are doughnuts everyday food, but I digress. I hated doughnuts until I tried both Luckys and Cartems - fact. Now I'm a believer! From reading the reviews here, I realize that doughnut preferences are highly personal. I will say that the majority of our office goes wild when someone brings in a signature orange box of these delights! I'll just list my favourites: - French Cruller (classic!) - Coconut Bismarck (divine!) - Bacon Apple Fritter (the thought disgusted me, but it's actually quite good) - Chocolate Old Fashioned Honourable mentions also to the Long John and Lemon Bismarck (lovely tart lemon filling). My least favourites are Salted Caramel, Orange Pistachio and Tiramisu - I typically like these flavours in general, but they just didn't work for me in doughnut form. Oh well, I still have plenty of options. The only complaint I have is that at times, the selection can be limited. read more
