Honestly what a gem!!!!!! We have walked by this place dozens of times and finally decided to give it a try a few weeks ago and I've been thinking about it ever since. It's a small place so if you go prime time on a weekend there is a wait but it's worth it, and they'll take your phone number and call you so you can walk around Roscoe. The food was just all flavored so well and tasted so fresh and the staff was friendly. We got both savory and sweet and I can't decide what was better, and Im normally always a savory brunch gal. My partner and I walked by Lucy's for the first time at the beginning of quarantine when we noticed that the restaurant had a menu full of vegan or vegan-possible items. Over the weekend, we finally stopped in and while the service was okay, the food exceeded our expectations! My vegan breakfast burrito was stuffed, wrapped well, and very flavorful--primarily oregano from a salsa inside? It came with a side of rice and salsa and really hit the spot. My partner's vegan Nouvelle Burger was also really good. It had a sliced vegan cheese swapped in for what would have been goat cheese, and the red onions on the burger were my favorite part. We would definitely recommend both. They were limiting capacity (per COVID rules) but they only had one person acting as server and host. I know that being understaffed isn't a fault of the server, so that's not why I dropped a star. Rather, when we asked about how some of the vegan options work (i.e., do you swap or simply remove non-vegan ingredients), the server didn't know even though having vegan options/alternatives is Lucy's thing. They had a couple food runners that eventually brought us water, but we didn't get checked on much and only got one refill on our bottomless coffee but not until we only had two bites of our food left. I thought this would be delicious: this place is usually packed, with five-star reviews aplenty. And the vegetarian sausage patties plus the four raspberries on my pancakes were yummy! The pancakes underneath though were dry and crumbly, and it's downhill from there. The potatoes were barely warm and unseasoned, the scrambled eggs seemed entirely unsalted. My partner had the same dry pancakes and "leathery" over-easy eggs. Also, water glasses smelling of egg are a big no. Was this a one-off? Possibly. I've never been here before and am super impressed. Space is small and they do not take reservations; be advised, it does feel like you are sitting on top of people. I visited with a dear friend for a belated birthday brunch and could not be more pleased with the food AND the service. Lucy's claim to fame is a Vegetarian breakfast and lunch spot. I am by no means Vegetarian, but I am GF and eat clean. First of all, for such a small place, the menu is very substantial. Although the Pecan French Toast was calling my name (it's not GF and it's not cheat day) I ordered a soy sausage, onion and smoked gouda omelet with an add on of avocado and GF toast. I also enjoyed a fruit infused hot tea. My friend had a scramble that was recommended by our server (who was so nice, btw) and house coffee. Again, we both loved our meals and the space. Hostile customer service. I came in with my infant in a stroller this morning. When I walked in, no one acknowledged me at all even though the restaurant was half empty. No big deal, so I went to sit down by the window because it seemed to have a place to tuck the stroller away. First, the waiter loudly called across the restaurant "ma'am, do you NEED to be near the window?" as if I had walked across some invisible velvet rope. I said no, I don't "need" to be by the window (admittedly with a little attitude in response) and he said can you sit over there so you're not in the way with all that stuff? Again, I had a stroller - as many people in Roscoe Village at 9am on a Sunday have. That's why I chose an almost empty restaurant in a kid-friendly neighborhood. I sat down and parked the stroller and he took away 3 of the water glasses from the table. I said "oh, actually can I have two of those back please? I'm meeting someone." He said "you need to learn to communicate. We have policies" and I was super confused because I thought asking for the glasses was me communicating and I had no idea what policy he was talking about- especially because he had never asked how many were coming (again, no one had seated me). I felt like everyone was staring at us because he was being openly hostile. I said "is there a reason you're angry with me?" Because he was dripping with condescension. He said "I'm not angry, you're just annoying." I was shocked and I said "if I'm annoying, maybe I should leave?" And he said "yeah I think you should." So then my friend and I and our babies went and found another place to eat - Kitch'n - and they welcomed us and even helped me get the stroller inside without asking. Ultimately I have no idea what policy he was referring to or what I did to make him so angry. The only thing I can think is that I didn't wait to be seated, but there is no hostess and no sign saying please wait to be seated and I wasn't acknowledged when I came in. Another thing is that I had a hard time with the stairs and the stroller, and a very kind customer jumped up to help me. I was thanking them a lot at one point and I wonder if that worker thought I was being passive aggressive. It definitely wasn't my intention, I just really appreciated the hand. read more

The food is incredible here - My best friend and I love coming here on weekend days. HOWEVER, I feel bad for the servers. It seems they are severely understaffed, which unfortunately sometimes hinders the experience of eating here. Used to come here often back when it was Victory's Banner, went a couple times after they changed ownership but the food didn't hit the same (especially the potatoes and peasant bread). Thought I'd give it another go this week, as the last time I'd been was well before COVID so it's been a minute. No physical menus, which isn't unheard of these days, except the QR code wouldn't work with my phone-- luckily the other person I was with had one that worked). We ordered the peasant lunch (tomato soup/toast with pesto and goat cheese) which was good taste wise, but again the bread isn't what it used to be (used to be thick and crusty, now sliced thin) and veggie omelette with potatoes (not bad, but not particularly good. Pretty flavorless). Kid got the kids combo: French toast sticks were oddly dry (like they didn't use any butter or eggs, but maybe it was meant to be vegan?) and the scrambled eggs cold (it was early on a weekday so we were the only table until about halfway through our meal). I can only describe the service as kind of awkward and cold--not overtly rude but just seemed indifferent/annoyed that we were there (we had a toddler with us but again, the place was empty for most of our meal). read more

We had a lovely breakfast here. The gluten free banana walnut pancakes with peach butter was awesome! I loved the special ketchup they served which was much better the Heinz brand. It was a bit busy and the dining room is on the smaller size but Idrees the male host was so sweet and really attentive even offering us water while we wait in the hot weather. We came in for a weekday lunch while walking on a work break. We were seated pretty quickly, but it took a few minutes for anyone to come by our table because the hostess was also everyone's server. We ordered 2 wraps, the Blackened Chicken and the B.L.T, which came with a side of fried potatoes. They were both very tasty and fresh, and pretty decent sized portions. I'd guess you'd be able to trick someone into thinking these wraps were just regular chicken wraps based on the flavor. A few new menu options which is exciting :) The food and service is still incredible - you will not be disappointed, regardless what you order! Hard decisions to be made on what to choose. Their french toast is award-worthy! The tofu scrabbles are delicious as well - their pesto is always very fresh and flavorful! The housemade Bliss Burgers are fantastic, packed with flavor, as is the Coconut-Peanut Veggie Wrap and Neatloaf dishes. I have not been able to find a chai that compares to theirs (which you can get vegan with soy or almond milk). I've eaten at Lucy's Café three times, and each time I've loved the food. Everything on the menu is vegan or vegetarian. As a dedicated plant-eater, It's wonderful to have so many vegan selections, and even better that those selections are delicious. I've had the Smoky Chicken 'n' Bacon Wrap; the Mexican quesadilla; nd the Southwest Skillet, all veganized. Oh boy. SO GOOD. If I have any complaint, any at all, it's that the Wrap comes with a scoop of plain brown rice, and the rice is a big nothing. Advice to Lucy's management; either spice up the rice with some flavor, or eliminate it entirely from this entrée. The wrap is so filling, you don't really need a side. And can I say how nice it is to have a cheesy quesadilla, made with gooey and melty plant-based cheese? I don't know what brand they use, but really, who cares? Just keep using it. The meals are substantial and filling. You will not be hungry for several hours, at least. The quesadilla is a smaller meal, which still managed to satisfy me. The only issue that Lucy's might face is staffing. I've seen one waiter handling everything. He is running around like a maniac the whole time. If there's ever a problem with service, the cause will be lack of staffing. That guy works like a fiend, but even he can be overwhelmed. This is my new favorite breakfast and lunch place. Cute little restaurant, but pretty expansive menu. I'm not a vegetarian, vegan, or gluten free, but I still found the menu to have lots of tasty options. My friend and I both enjoyed what we ordered. We had been to Lucy's before it was Lucy's bc of the availability of vegetarian and vegan dishes and substitutes. If that's your vibe, you will be very happy here. Small venue means a wait at times. It's a tight space. Feels like you are eating at someone's house-in a good way. The staff is friendly and personable. They got to the table quickly and took time to explain and answer any questions we had. The coffee was good and they had many non-dairy options to choose from. The menu was solid with a variety of standard breakfast dishes, a few specialties and (again) veggie/vegan options (!) Food was good, plated nicely and came out promptly. Lucy's is a fine brunch place for families. If you are vegan or require a gluten-free diet, there are far better options in the area that do not increase prices for making standard breakfast items vegan. You will be better off going there. First we waited 40 minutes for our mediocre, room temperature, not exactly our order to come. A couple walked in 20 minutes after we were sat and were served before us and pretty much done by the time our food arrived. That just took the wind right out of our sails. Visiting from DC and I had to find great vegan options for breakfast. I wanted more than the norm and this place gave me just that. Lucy's is a very quaint spot with cozy decor. There's so many food options and just about everything can be made vegan. I came two days in a row. Between both days I had the vegan blueberry French Toast, vegan raspberry pancake, vegan raspberry French Toast, vegan sausage and roasted potatoes. I recommend the blueberry French Toast overall. The pancake was a little bland and unfortunately the raspberry was kinda tasteless. It wasn't bad but it definitely wasn't better than the blueberry French Toast. Do not save/ put yourself in line to wait on Yelp. It doesn't work. I found this out when the I went up to the hostess and she said they are trying to remove the feature from Yelp but can't. So instead of a 15 minute wait like I thought , it was 45 mins. I found the hostess rather rude. She didn't apologize for the mixup but seemed annoyed at me. The place was almost empty inside and had a bunch of free tables on the patio but I was told it was 45 minutes. She said she needed to call everyone that was ahead of me...Before going to another restaurant I called to see how much time was left and she said that I was "last on the list" without giving me a time. One big complaint is the bathroom. It really needs to be DEEP cleaned from corner to corner and I don't understand why a note is taped to the wall above the toilet that says keep the toilet seat up.
