Shrink-wrapped meat: it's what's for dinner…read more During our recent trip to Alaska, I was dragged to Echo Lake Superior Meats by my husband's Alaskan aunt and uncle because it is the Home of The World Famous Jalapeno Cheese Spread and because we were in the throes of a meat emergency. Apparently, dinner (which was being cooked by the Alaskans) required something called "Reindeer Sticks," and as any Kenai-area native knows, for Reindeer Sticks you go to Echo Lake. Echo Lake is straight-forward and no-frills, which I imagine is exactly what one seeks in a superior meat shop (since I'm not allowed in the kitchen unless someone needs another martini, it would be a stretch to consider myself skilled in meat-seeking-missions). White floors, white walls, clean white cases full of (you guessed it) meats, smoked local fish, and spreads of all flavors and sizes. While we browsed the meat aisles, the friendly staff brought out some fresh cajun smoked salmon and asked if we'd like to try some. Yes! Delicious! That night, in addition to the meat sticks, the family devoured not one but two tubs of Jalapeno Cheese Spread, which is kind of disgusting in retrospect. Man, that stuff is addictive! (It would be perfect for pre-Thanksgiving meal snacking around the fireplace or TV set, depending on how your family rolls). The reindeer sticks were, of course, delectable, with nary a leftover in sight. While at first glance the meats seem a bit pricey compared to the crap they serve us down here on the mainland, this place offers truly top-notch foodstuffs. I am eager to test out their online ordering system for specialty sausages, gourmet deli treats, smoked alaskan fish, gift boxes, and fresh seafood. They are SUPER cheap, priced by weight, usually around 3-4 dollars for a good size breakfast. Loaded with eggs, bacon and sausage. They also have breakfast english muffins. The wraps and English muffins taste like they are made by hand. I haven't really tried the bakery items, or gone shopping at the grocery area. But I highly recommend trying those breakfast burritos or sandwiches!

I am happy to say this has NEVER happened after shopping at this store. Cashiers know you by name, never a shopping cart in the parking lot to crash into and they have the most amazing selection of imported foods Ive ever seen in a grocery store of this size. Best of all, they special order. If you live 20 miles out of town and want to order in bulk, organic anything, then this is the store for you. This time I saw a great deal for 8 whole filets of the Black Cod fish. So I called and they told me about specials. I got an additional pound of king salmon, halibut, Coon shrimp (a native type!) and a few jars of salmon caviar eggs! I already had the caviar eggs with my breakfast and simply wow. So fresh. I steamed the black cod whole filet with some ginger and wow wow wow. Hubby could not get enough of it! Highly recommend if you need to buy fresh seafood delivered straight to your door. Today, I went to this particular Walmart for the first time with my service dog in training.. I…read morecame to buy one thing and expose him to new public places. After being in the store for 15 minutes my dog is now starting to be less attentive and loosing focus. I go to self check out and get confronted by a middle aged woman who I assume worked for Walmart (she never introduced herself or said hello). This woman said "We don't allow pets in our store." Me being uncomfortable and un confrontational replied with okay because a break was clearly needed for me and my dog, I turn around to pay and leave and she continues to repeat herself. I said "Okay i'm almost done." I get replied back to with "Your pet needs to leave the building." This went on for the full 5 minutes it took me to finish checking out.. she threatened to call KPC and continued to tell me my dog was a pet and that this was illegal. General reminder out there for those who need it service dogs are not required to wear identification and often can be mistaken for pets, please ask the right questions needed if worried.
