    Brussels Sprouts

My friends made reservations on a Friday here, so I looked on line and noticed several bad reviews. So, I went in thinking the worst. My wife and I got there early and sat at the bar for drinks. We ordered Old Fashioned's, we did noticed that their liquor selection was low quality for Franklin standards. Looking around very few people were in the bar and very few seated at tables. We got seated at 6:15 still very few people there. As our waitress Miroun showed up a spark in our experience got a lot better. She was honest and very engaging with us! Still very few people in the restaurant. For food we ordered Monkey Bread and Brussels sprouts for appetizers. Loved the Monkey Bread, Brussels, if you follow me they are not my jam. I then ordered the Wedge, and it was very good. For an entree I ordered the filet Oscar style with a Loaded Mashed Potatoes, both very good with good flavor. Then we all shared a carrot cake. As I read the reviews earlier most said the service was terrible, thanks to Miroun our service was excellent! If you decide to try them again, ask for Miroun, she will take care of you! Cheers!

My husband and I recently visited for a date night. No complaints as far as service goes. Our waitress was kind and served us well. The food presented to us was another story. I gave 2 stars strictly based on the food received. Honestly 2 stars is generous and the only saving grace of our experience here was the bread we ordered (not provided like at most other "high end" restaurants). Before arriving I had chosen my salad of choice due to what was pictured on the website menu. Needless to say it looked nothing like I expected from viewing the original. Our server was nice enough to return it to the kitchen and take it off our bill although there was no offer to "try again" or provide another salad. Our hamburgers were ordered medium well and the outside was black and charred while the inside appeared pink and not fully cooked. It was unfortunate we ended up paying way too much for the product received. We want this local place to succeed but we will not be back.

The one on top was a darker shade of orange. Salty and spicy compared to the other. Also, hardly any grits. Mainly "shrimp and roux."

Even though they were busy, the two sweet hostesses managed to get us seated right away at the bar. The bartenders were incredibly friendly and made the whole experience even better. I ordered the chicken Caesar salad, and my husband got the dry-aged ribeye. Everything was AMAZING. The steak was cooked perfectly, and even the Caesar salad was one of those dishes that was simple but just really, really good. My mom ordered the steak frites. It was good, but she didn't like the peppercorn sauce. I think if that's your thing it would be good but it just wasn't her taste preference. We also got a side of broccoli gratin. Very good. Cheese and broccoli... what's not to like? Overall I would say I had a decent experience. I'd like to go again and maybe try something else and sit at a table.

Culamar is drenched in natural light and decorated simply - nothing too loud or busy about the place, thus perfect for a working lunch. The menu was odd and we all struggled to understand the categories it was broken up into. Each item read as a series of arbitrarily listed ingredients. Our (half asleep, disinterested) waitress informed us the dishes were, in majority, "tapas style", a term I find exhaustingly passé. I began to dream of restaurants down the road we could have selected, but we were here and we must stay the course! I had to keep it together for Dennis. We ordered 6 dishes for the three of us to share, and you know what? They were all excellent. Really such outstanding bites. I was stunned by how much I enjoyed the beef carpaccio, the calamari was the best I've ever had (amazing tempura fry!), the Gnuddi (basically a massive gnocchi) in browned butter and crisp sage was a pillowy delight. In spite of my initial concerns -- the hiccups of a confusing menu and our less-than-energetic waitress -- we all left with pleased palates.

The food itself was absolutely delicious. The bread was AMAZING and honestly one of the highlights. We also ordered the oysters, beef carpaccio, and duck, and everything tasted incredible. My biggest complaint is the price for the portion sizes. I really don't mind spending money on a nice dinner, but every dish we ordered was gone in what felt like less than a minute. Everything tasted amazing, but for the amount of food you actually get, I just couldn't justify the prices. We actually left and ended up going to another restaurant afterward because we were still hungry, which was pretty disappointing considering how much we had just spent. Overall, the food was delicious, but between the extremely small portions, high prices, tight space, and slower service, it just wasn't worth it for us. I'm glad we tried it, but I wouldn't go back.

We arrived a little early so we could sit at the bar and enjoy an Old Fashioned before the rest of the guests arrived. It's a classic, old-school bar with so much character! The shrimp were large, and the cocktail sauce was perfect! Now, here's a must: Order the salad bar! It's legendary! For my entrée, I went with my usual Filet Oskar, sooo good and cooked to perfection! Others in our group had the filet and the fish, and everyone loved their meals. Since it was Mom's 90th birthday, she had the Peppermint Ice Cream, which is her favorite! And here's the really sweet part. Our waitress, Sylvia, noticed that I had birthday candles sitting off to the side. Without saying a word, she discreetly came behind me, took the candles, and put them on Mom's ice cream! Then they worked their magic. They came to the table, took a few pictures, and gave us the photos in a little paper frame to take home. What a wonderful memory from such a special birthday! And back to Sylvia, she was amazing! She was incredibly attentive throughout the entire meal, helped us while ordering, kept our water glasses filled, and always greeted us with her beautiful smile. This is why Sperry's is legendary, the food is great, but the service is what makes the experience truly special! Ambiance was nice as always. Not too loud but was pretty busy. We had maybe a 5 minute wait once we checked in for our reservation. He asked her to pick a good red wine that was middle of the road and her option blew him away. It was very good. I got a red sangria and was pleased with it, I prefer mine to be sweeter though. Their bread was delicious as always, crab dip was very good! Wish I had more. Their Caesar was much larger than expected so we shared it but it was good. I opted for the filet medallions Oscar (not pictured) which was good and ordered them medium. Honestly they weren't cooked consistently at all but still very good. Some pretty rare and maybe one out of 4 were actually medium. The ones too undercooked I just took home and ate the next day with eggs. Wish it came with a little more asparagus though. Whipped potatoes are very good! Overall enjoyed my time here and after all: two glasses of wine, two sangrias, bone in ribeye, Caesar, au gratin potatoes, filet medallions Oscar, whipped potatoes and crab dip we had a bill of around $225.

I'm guessing that's due in part to Maverick, the General Manager, who seems genuinely committed to excellence. We actually came back this week because we realized we'd enjoyed our meal so much during our last visit that we forgot to take photos for our review. Believe it or not, we nearly forgot again! I rarely eat bread, but I always make an exception for the Spent Grain Loaf. Paired with the unbelievably fresh butter and flaky sea salt, it's one of my favorite things on the menu. My husband ordered the Prawn Cocktail. I'm allergic to shrimp, so I couldn't try it myself, but he said it was outstanding. I usually order the Koji Ribeye, but this time my husband claimed it first, so I ventured out and ordered the Alaskan Halibut with hash brown crust, orange vinaigrette, and watercress. It was absolutely delicious. My favorite side remains the Roasted Carrots with Leiper's Fork honey and tarragon--they're incredible. We finished with the Carrot Cake. It's less sweet than the version served at another well-known Franklin restaurant, which I actually prefer. The flavors are more nuanced, and the crunchy shredded carrot on top adds the perfect texture. The food was, as always, exceptional. We were fortunate to have Jeff Paul as our server again. He's knowledgeable, attentive, and strikes that perfect balance of being available without ever being intrusive. That said, we've honestly never had anything but excellent service at 1799. Maverick stopped by our table and was warm, engaging, and genuinely interested in making sure every guest had a memorable experience. It's clear he takes great pride in the restaurant, and it shows in every aspect of the dining experience. 1799 continues to be one of our favorite restaurants in Franklin, and we can't wait for our next visit. -Wendy & Ben Ellis
