Finally got around to celebrating my cousin's birthday with her, over a month late since the weather hasn't been conducive to outdoor eating. We have been wanting to try Ludwig's for a long time, and often times when a person is that excited about eating at a place, it can end up being anticlimactic. Not so with Ludwig's, it was everything we hoped for and more. The outdoor seating is spacious, and light, our server was very friendly and helpful, and the food, which is what we came for, was very tasty. We shared a sausage sampler platter, which comes on a bed of sauerkraut and two different kinds of mustard, and an order of the potato pancakes that come with smoked salmon and herbed sour cream. So good. A very satisfying meal, and fulfillment of a birthday wish. We very much enjoyed the variety of sausages and had trouble picking a favorite. My cousin loved the potato pancakes so much, she said she'd come back and make a meal of pancakes alone. She can do that, but I'm going to try the Jägerschnitzel. Ludwig's is a cute outdoor bier garden right on the corner of Castro and and California. The patio is dog friendly and any seat gives you a great view of the street. The service was fast and they had a lot of season holiday specials! (Turkey sandwich, cranberry Radler). I really like how casual it is. Lots of seating in case you come with a big group. Beer on tap is served in a large stein and the prosecco/wine comes in a smaller pour in a glass. Most of the dishes include pork, but they have an entire vegetarian section with spatzle, vegetables, and even a lentil loaf. Vegan options are more limited, but there are a few. Simply put, this place is THE BEST. Truth be told, I'm not a huge fan of German food, but since FH is, I've eaten at many, many of them throughout the immediate Bay Area and beyond. Ludwig's is the best out of all of them by a mile. Many, many miles, really! Outdoor seating and QR code menus make everything feel safe but convenient. Select your items with the online menu and then order with the waitress. What we ordered: Spaetzle: perfectly chewy, toothsome, browned in butter - delicious and authentic Jaegerschnitzel: the portion is absolutely massive. The mushroom sauce is perfectly rich and full of mushroom flavor (with maybe a hint of cognac or something?) Served on a bed of perfectly cooked spaetzle. Sauerkraut: this is, hands down, my favorite thing here, and I don't even generally like sauerkraut. I mean, I'll eat it, but it's usually an afterthought. A thing on the plate that I eat if I still have room for a ho hum side dish. I first had Ludwig's version when a friend brought several sausage platters to our yearly Oktoberfest party last fall, and I could not stop eating it. In fact, I came to Ludwig's JUST for the 'kraut, but everything else was a scrumptious bonus. Nuremberg sausage platter: these aren't my favorite sausages, but FH likes them. The pretzel they're served with is soft and delightful and you get your choice of hot or sweet mustard (or you can have both). It comes on a bed of 'kraut, so it's a winner. I've eaten at the San Jose location too, and I don't remember being blown away quite like I was at the MV location, but it could just be because I didn't have the sauerkraut that time! I miss Ludwig's in San Jose, from the vibe and the amazing service they had. This is my 3rd and last time I come to this place. The food is amazing but the service is awful, it makes you feel like you are in a cafeteria. A restaurant especially when you pay high prices should feel like a special experience. This is not the place you want to take someone on a date. The service is awful, there is no dedicated wait staff. You can sit anywhere you want but don't expect anyone to come take your order. The owners were always present in the San Jose location making sure things were running smoothly but at this location that is not the case, it's not smooth operation. To the owners, please hire better management and have someone seating people and making sure that your staff is well trained like the one you used to have in San Jose. Honestly, super affordable beer place. Their beer menu is exactly what you would expect of a German style beer place. Plentiful wheat and strong beers. They also have a large amount of outdoor seating and their own parking lot (so you don't have to hunt for parking in downtown Mountain View). Having studied abroad in Germany, I've been to my fair share of beer gardens but have never been particularly impressed by German cuisine (typically very "meat and potatoes" heavy). That being said, I can definitively say that Ludwig's offered some of the best food I've had at a German beer garden! We started with the "Feast for Two" sausage plate, which came with FIVE different types of sausage over a bed of sauerkraut. Each one was grilled to perfection and completely distinct in flavor and texture (and the sausages were all creatively plated, lined up from largest to smallest!). There were the small Nürnberger sausages, a Bavarian sausage (smooth texture), a Thüringer sausage, a Jalapeño cheese sausage, and my favorite, a chicken spinach sausage. Everything went nicely with the sides of sweet mustard and spicy mustard, as well as the bed of juicy sauerkraut. Another favorite dish of mine was the Jäger Schnitzel, a breaded pork cutlet topped with a creamy mushroom sauce and served with homemade spätzle and lingonberry jam. The spätzle was a bit on the bland side, but the schnitzel was perfectly crispy, and the mushrooms added plenty of umami flavor! Our last entree was the Mary's Chicken Caesar, a simple, fresh salad made of romaine, crispy bacon bits, and hard-boiled egg, all topped with sliced breaded chicken schnitzel and pretzel croutons (so creative!). All the components of the salad came together nicely, from the crunch of the romaine to the salty bacon to the crispy chicken! And I can't forget about the sides--the pretzel served with sweet mustard and a thick, gooey cheese sauce was a must-try, though the potato salad dressed with vinegar and chives was a bit on the watery/bland side and probably skippable. Overall, though, the food here was definitely a step above typical German fare, and the ample outdoor seating spilled out into the courtyard and into the street, making for a super festive atmosphere on a warm evening! read more

This was my first time trying German food and it's safe to say that I loved it! While I was worried because I didn't anticipate the taste being up my alley, the chicken schnitzel and the sides offered were extremely filling, and I had plenty leftovers enough for a second meal! When we arrived, it was quite crowded, but the place is absolutely beautiful. It's located in downtown MV, and the outdoor seating is the perfect vibe for a nice sit down dinner :) The food was a bit pricey, but didn't mind because the portions were huge. I've been searching for a Currywurst around the area for awhile and I'm so glad I stumbled upon this place!! The sauce on their Currywurst tastes like the ones I had in Munich. I also kept eating my boyfriend's Jäger Schnitzel, I highly recommend!! It's crispy and tender on the inside. W/ the mushroom sauce, absolute delish! First time coming to this place, they had plenty of seating outdoors (with limited indoor seating) on a Saturday night - though this might because it rained earlier in the day, I still suspect good wait times even when a normal night. The food was decent in my opinion, nothing to really write home about. We ordered the pork knuckle, which had a excellent fried texture but the meat beneath was rather tough and you could tell they didn't slow cook it for as long as other traditional German places might. The pork knuckle is definitely more than enough for one person and I would recommend eating it with friends or family (probably enough for 2-3 people in my opinion)! That being said the actual flavor of the meat was good, decently savory and not overly salty. The potato dumplings and sauerkraut were decent, the sauerkraut wasn't too pungent and actually had a tinge of sweetness which I actually enjoyed. The beet salad was as expected, pretty standard faire - but also a good vegetarian option for those looking for one. They had a decent beer selection, and I think this is where they would shine through on a typical weekend night. They also had small .2 liter glasses incase you wanted to order a small amount just to try, as opposed to being forced to order a .5 liter beer before you've even tried it. The service was excellent though, and that made the experience more enjoyable for me and my family. We were seated very quickly and our server kept checking in on us. Once again this might be different on a busier night, but I generally found the staff to be quite friendly! Hands down, some of the best German food I've had in a long time anywhere in the Bay Area. We looked around and tried several other German restaurants that would accommodate a really large group of people with solid authentic German food and Gisela with her team at "Ludwigs" was it. They use the freshest, finest ingredients and making sure each dish is done the right way. There are so many items on the menu that are mouth watering, from the "Schweinshaxen" which is huge (be prepared to take a lot home), the sausages, and especially the Goulash was especially memorable by all the guest we had. Biers and brats at Ludwig's German Table. Wow the service was a delight. We spoke to the owner Ben Bate, and he was very pleasant and made us feel very welcome. This place is rustic and not fancy. A German vibe from the menu to the ambiance. Our waitress (Caroline?) was awesome taking care of our every need during our visit at the Weihnachtsmarkt Biergarten which started with Glühwein and continued with phenomenal biers, especially the Peanut Butter Milk (you have to try it). The sausage sampler with Sauerkraut, the cheesy Spätzle, hot pretzel, Jägerschnitzel with Spätzle...and for the kicker the best Apfel Strudel hands down! We sat at their Stammtisch enjoying the German experience while the rain fell all day...true German feeling. I've been to their San Jose location a few times pre-COVID and really enjoy the atmosphere. The new Mountain View location is similarly great with friendly staff, large shared outdoor tables that facilitate socializing and spacious seating. A bottle of hand sanitizer is available at each table. They easily accommodate large parties to pay separate checks without issues and I appreciate that they gave my party a complimentary plate of pretzels with mustard in addition to prompt service of our orders. Sunday brunch service was fast and portions are filling. I'm happy they added a location in downtown Mountain View; it's a great fit for the community! First the really good stuff: The German beer on tap was very good. The french fries that we ordered with our meal were very good. The cucumber salad (that came with a white dressing) was very good. Now for the really bad stuff: We ordered the wiener schnitzel, which is supposed to be made with veal. Although the wiener schnitzel was huge in size, and it looked very good, it did not taste like veal-- not even close !!! In fact the wiener schnitzel tasted absolutely terrible ! It was the worst wiener schnitzel that we have ever eaten. It tasted so bad that we actually asked our waiter to verify that the schnitzel was made with veal. The waiter said yes, the schnitzel was made with veal. We will not being back to Ludwig's. If you like the taste of veal, go to Original Joe's in San Jose and order the Breaded Veal Cutlet, or the Veal Cutlet Milanese, or the Veal Parmigiana. You won't be disappointed. read more

I was sad when Bierhaus closed, and I know Ludwigs had been in the works for a while from even before COVID, so I'm glad I finally got to try it. The setup is similar to the prior establishment with a mostly outdoor eating / drinking area. They have tons of outdoor seating, which is a plus, and we had no problem getting a large table to ourselves for 2 people on a Saturday night. Servers are mostly masked, most tables have hand sanitizer, people are spaced out outdoors, and they have QR code menus, so everything feels very COVID safe. Heat lamps and Sunday shades keep it comfortable on the patio. Great spot for a drink and some snacks. I've visited Ludwig's a few times with some coworkers as well as friends, and it's usually pretty easy to snag a table and hang out for a bit. In the few times I've been here, I was impressed with their beer selections. I've ordered a sour as well as a radler, and enjoyed both of those. I really liked that they had a selection of radlers as well. For food, I've ordered the pretzel as well as the mushroom fries, and would recommend both. The pretzel is piping hot and I like the mustard that comes with it. The mushroom fries are really tasty with the right amount of umami-ness coming from the mushrooms, and the gravy is quite nice too. Service is generally pretty good, though it did take a while to get the check. I'd absolutely recommend stopping by if you're in the area for a quick snack or drink. I ordered a watermelon rattler had a hint of tarragon. It was based with a pilsner in a very refreshing drink for a hot day. Strawberry lemonade was also good except on the sweeter side that we had to add more ice to it. Our group ordered the Jaeger veal schnitzel, classic schnitzel with chicken, potato pancakes, cheese spaetzle, and a sausage plate with a veal and pork sausage over mash. The cheese spaetzle was something that I was looking forward to. It had really sweet onions and crispy onions on top. Super cheesy. I love the plates and were able to share such as the schnitzels. The spatzle from the Jaeger schnitzel plate was super buttery. The cream mushroom sauce was also very good with the spaetzle.
