Great location for pizza near the beach. Pizza is cooked in a wood fired oven and you have choices from some BIG pizza. I might be biased, but I don't think pizza in the south compares to what we have in the Midwest. This was good pizza, but nothing that blew me out of the water--no pun intended. Great service and staff, especially the margarita our server made! Definitely fresh!! Mozz sticks were also really good, but again, I've had ones that wowed me more. I went with the server's recommendation of pepperoni, onions, and bell pepper, and it totally hit the mark. The crust is thin with a nice chew, the toppings were fresh, and the whole thing just worked. There's seating both inside and out, but the patio is where it's at. They've got ceiling fans going, so even on warm days it stays surprisingly cool and comfortable. Simple quick attentive service. Very child friendly. Kids menus lean towards the 1st grade+ side. As mentioned the pizza size here is huge. Oddly enough my 6 year old ate 4/5ths of his pizza. He said I'm full but then ate the rest of the pepperoni. I ordered the sausage and mushroom. The crust is thin but holds its integrity and the toppings are a B+. The slice is very big and despite the price-tag, you get your money's worth. Not the best new york style pizza, but then again, im on the opposite coast so not to be expected. Needed a casual place to eat with kids that wasn't a fast food chain and found this place online. My husband and I shared the Luigis combo platter which is a portion of meat lasagna, fettuccine alfredo, and ravioli. Got 3 kids meals, mozzarella sticks and sodas for all. The kids pizza slice is HUGE BTW. My 7 yo couldn't finish it. The bill came to a shocking $115 with an automatic gratuity of 18% applied. The food was good, but not for that price!! And an automatically applied tip?? For a family of 5, not a large party?? There was nothing special about the service other than them doing their job of taking our orders and bringing our food. My husband's cousins were in town and we wanted to just grab something quick and local, so we stopped by luigi's! I've ordered pizza from here a few times to take home but this is surprisingly my first time sitting inside the restaurant. It's a great indoor outdoor feel mixed with a traditional Sports bar. They also have a really cute patio if the weather is right! We ordered a number of appetizers including buffalo wings. Was in town for a conference and this was my first time in Mission Beach. A few other places on Mission were swamped with people so I decided to turn the corner and lo and behold I found this place. Not too busy and it was a full service restaurant with a decent menu. I ordered a cup of soup and slice of pizza since it was their special tonight. I had no idea what was coming. The does is custom made so, it takes some time to get but it's worth it. The pizza has a nice crispy bottom crust. It's not burnt either. It was perfect. The soup was flavorful. They also serve lobster bisque which the server said is their everyday soup. There are tables near the windows so you can people watch. There is some street parking but I parked by the Public parking area and walked over. Service was pretty good. I would definitely come back if I am in the area again. read more

Burger was honestly sooo good, but it's really hard to mess up a bbq burger. The pasta was super mid, pretty bland and sauce was watery. The bruschetta was solid to me, but I'm not very picky and they give you a bottle of balsamic glaze on the side which was nice. The service was actually pretty good our server checked in on us frequently and her timing for water refills were perfect! the pricing here is a little high for what is served but I understand we're by the beach. Fortunately we had ranch and she really liked their ranch. $10 a beer and $5 a fountain soda. Our bill was ~$50. Our server took forever to cash us out and get a last refill. Our waiter asked "what do you even want" for drinks and asked it again for our food order. Myself and 2 friends went and order a medium specialty pizza which was 30$. I came here after hitting up the Fit gym and needed a light yet filling lunch. We were window shopping through the shops and decided to go with Luigis. The restaurant is very open and have a lot of seating. We opted to get the lunch specials. The lasagna was our favorite. We saw that they even had giant pizza slices. Our lunch special was about $15 a plate. Not too bad. Since it was kind of busy the day we went (probably on a weekend) it was quite packed. I have eaten spectacular Italian food and this place is special to me. It is my earliest memory of an Italian restaurant, and I stumbled on it way back probably in 1988. I remember going in because I was hungry and I saw people (girls) roller skating out of the place with huge slices of pizza and I wanted one. I traced them back to Luigi's thinking I would order a slice but while inside I noticed a doorway covered by a curtain leading to the back. It didn't look like kitchen storage or anything and I found some tables back there. I sat down and a waitress appeared with a menu! I was not expecting this was anything other than a roller skate up pizza counter. I had the Pescatore... I think it was linguini or spaghetti back in the day, it is penne now. The sauce was on point. It is the baseline Italian red sauce for me deserving or not. To me a typical red sauce is saltier than the one at Luigi's, therefore it has too much salt - or this one is more tart than Luigi's therefore it is flawed. I have had better sauces, I have made better sauces - but this for me is the expected definition of red sauce. If you don't have some novel and interesting departure from anything but a typical red sauce then this is the sauce you use as a measuring stick. Now... past all that - Mission Bay is cool. San Diego is cool, and finding a secret Italian restaurant in a cool place is totally cool. I love this place. It is an important restaurant for me in a biographical sense. I coached Little League baseball for many years and of all the kids I have ever coached I couldn't help but assemble an all star team of players from them. Same thing for restaurants for me. I have my personal All Star List of Restaurants: Commander's Palace in New Orleans, Luigi's at the Beach here, Audrey's in Lincoln City, Oregon (my first domestic amazing dining experience), the Blue bayou restaurant in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at the Tokyo Disneyland (had a dish of cabbage rolls on a beautiful plate with an amazing design - only to find out the design I was looking at was art made of sauce, and the plate underneath looked nothing like it (the central basis of the entrée was a number of thin, fanned out, minced meat stuffed cabbage rolls). The Chilaquiles at the old Comal Cafe... the Big Daddio on the Patio at Crickets, some African cafe in Lisbon (such a great time with very cool people)... I had great sashimi with my daughter Allie Gillett in Port Aransas, and we had snails together more towards Corpus that same trip maybe. There are important meals in one's life for whatever reason, to me it is the miracle of our times - that an average guy like myself can eat better than so many ancestral kings could before us. Or at least, I would wager money on a bet that says I have experienced the first step of digestion (chewing food in my mouth) that was as delightful as any human who has ever lived. I am not saying I made it (whatever it was) but I have tasted the god's ambrosia, and drank their same nectar. No being has delighted more in that particular moment of zen when all things outside of the moment you chew that first bite of a perfectly cooked, impossibly juicy steak cease and you live in the now. No thought of future or past, no desires, no regrets... simply bliss, overstimulating your brain until you are on the verge of unconsciousness. Luigi's was a meal that slapped me out of my own internal narrative for a moment, and that alone is invaluable, but the accomplishment of it by delight was so unexpected as to make it deserving of eternal gratitude. It is good. You will leave full. You will not be disappointed by the bill. You will never forget the vibe. I have forever wondered if the people that could live that experience didn't take it for granted. I choose to believe so only because I resent them that opportunity. As jealous as I am of all that, I love that my life gave me the chance to live in that present, at that place, experiencing an extraordinary meal. This is a great location right where all action is. Parking is a pain but if you can score parking especially after 6 you don't have to worry about parking tickets. Around the corner the street with shops, bars and the boardwalk. Across is the famous Belmont park. So dinner and a night with the family at the arcade, rides in San Diego is a perfect evening. Back to pizza. Inside is a long dinning hall and outside has a good size patio to take in all the people watching or give dirty looks at people struggling to parallel park in front or behind your car. First for an appetizer we did the fried ravioli with a marinara sauce. Onto the kids slices are huge. They are a 1/2 a regular size slice and had a side of giant onion rings. The kids loved the ranch dressing. The whole pies are not the same size as the individual slices which. The crust is thicker then the thin crust the individual slices are. The medium is small with 6 slices. We got the combination which was filled with toppings. Just a little to thick dough and lots of raw onions. Even with how busy it was the staff was on top of it. I do prefer the thinner slices so sadly I wouldn't get a whole pie. Another bummer is you can't get any of the specialty slices as an individual. Not a huge deal breaker just a bummer. However if I couldn't find parking I would skip this place for another sorry. read more
