As I turned the corner onto Forest Ave my heart sank. There was a Buffalo fire department truck in front of the store and people were standing outside. Oh no! Just as I was about to go in the place must have caught fire. Yikes! A man was leaving the bakery with as many loaves of bread as he could carry. I investigated. Sure enough, the store was filled with firemen. I couldn't get in. It turns out the firemen were buying a lot of baked goods. Whew! And the guy carrying all the loaves of bread was a caterer. He bought 50 loaves of Luigi's delicious bread. He explained he was catering a 50th wedding anniversary, and the celebrants wanted a loaf of Luigi's bread for each of their 50 years. I'm not kidding! I bought only 4 loves of bread. They were out of my favorite - sesame seeded Italian so I had to go with plain. They have a trick with their bread. They don't use preservatives, so you have to eat it within 2 days and then go back for more. It's a trap! They were out of almond and poppy seed strudel thingys, so I settled for apple, blueberry and cherry. I tried the lemon cake and it's great. But my favorite thing was the almond cake. Absolutely dreamy. It didn't make it home because I stopped at a friend's house on the way home to share some. All I got was just one slice. And I ate that before I had a chance to take its picture. read more

Luigi's is quite simply a little old-school gem. The family bakery is located in an unassuming brick building, but as soon as you step out of your car you'll smell the deliciousness going on inside. Crusty breads and rolls, home-made doughnuts, and a nice little selection of Italian pastries fill a glass-front cabinet adorned with handwritten signs describing the offerings and prices. Good luck choosing! Everything I've ever tried has been wonderful. And I love that the bread has about four ingredients--none of which are scary-sounding additives! Happily, the warmth doesn't stop with the tasty baked goods; the service is just as special. I've never stopped there without a good story to tell when I got home. On one visit, I ordered doughnuts, a couple pastries, and two loaves of bread. When the gentleman behind the counter told me, "That'll be $3.25," I said, "That doesn't seem right. It has to be more than that!" His smiling reply, "I own the place, it costs what I say it costs." Yesterday, I slipped in a few minutes before closing and I ordered Italian bread. After a few moments of discussion, the ladies at the counter concluded that the two loaves left were "too hard" and offered me BOGO French bread instead--two loaves for $2! The location was small and not visually appealing. The was a small selection of breads, the case. I asked for Donuts and was told no Donuts today, Monday thru Saturday only. The employees were Xtra friendly and helpful. A pleasant greeting was offered to each person who walked in the door, and surprisingly that was several. Mostly bread only purchases of which again, they had a minimal assortment. Overall my experience was not as positive as my other bakery experiences. This place is Corwin VETOED. read more

I am on a hunt to find who makes bumbleberry tortes around here and so I walked into Luigis to ask about their pies. They didn't have what I was looking for however, I left with a lemon blueberry muffin and a loaf of pan dolce (sweet bread) which were OUT OF THIS WORLD! I have come here 3 times since and buy loaves of pan dolce to give out to friends. One of these days that I have off, I'd like to try a few different kinds, in the morning, when everything comes out fresh. As far as location: it's located on Forest and Niagara St right near where the new Buff State dorms are being built. The building is run down and not much room to park. We travel to Buffalo, NY once every two years. We ALWAYS get bread, rolls & other baked goods from Luigi's. This is a REAL Italian family bakery! There's none better. My wife loves their frosted, flaky heart-shaped pastry. I love the sesame-seeded Italian bread. If it wasn't such a long drive back to Florida I'd fill the back of the car... but I'd eat it all before we got to Tennessee! I would like to give a lower score but I can't. This is the most disgusting bakery I have ever seen. The baked goods looked old and dried out. The case was so dirty, I was waiting for cockroaches to crawl out. I was surprised there were no rats as it is so dirty. Do not go to this bakery. This is a hidden gem, unassuming on the outside and full of warmth and hospitality on the inside. We tried a delicious almond pastry and a warm cinnamon roll. The roll was subtly sweet and just the right size. Took some Italian bread home to enjoy during the week and was very pleased with the affordability to quality ratio. The woman who helped me was patient and made great recommendations! She also slipped in a cookie on the house. I left a happy camper and can't wait to go back. read more
