Lopez Automotive has been a staple in Atwater for many years. I was fortunate to find them many years ago. I've known Luis for over 20 years and he is truly dedicated to his craft and is very knowledgeable. His shop is modern and offers many conveniences to make getting care for your vehicle less stressful. I have found that when I take my car there, all of my issues are addressed and I can trust that my vehicle has been repaired properly. I always do a lot of research before giving ANY establishment my business. Luis has an incredible reputation in Atwater. His honesty and community involvement make him a great example of a successful small business. Recently, I needed to get the 60K service on my car. There is no way I trust the dealership, so I made an appointment. I had a hectic day, and Luis was very accommodating. I had my car towed there, and he was able to repair my car. The pricing was great and my car was running like new. Luis confirmed all repairs with me and I was sure to convey to him what repairs I wanted. I can assure everyone here that if my tires needed to be filled with air, I would not bother a busy automotive shop with that. I would either go to a gas station or a tire shop. Seems pretty obvious to me. I really recommend this business to everyone. Luis is a very reasonable, fair person and a true professional. As the other reviews express this place WILL NOT help you in an emergency. I came in stranded with a sidewall flat and they told me I need an appointment or come back??!? Come back my tire is shredded and I cannot go anywhere. Luckily at least 1 guy gave me enough air to get to pep boys around the corner where I thank god they were professional and got me back on the road in minutes. I questioned the brake work on two full front brake jobs on the same car. After the first repair was done, a second repair was done after 5 months and only 5,200 miles. This pointed to how such a poor a job was done on the first repair. No good brake work lasts only after 5,200 miles unless it wasn't properly done. I confronted him face to face about their work. They lost three customers in our family. He didn't need us and we are going elsewhere. read more

Just today my wife (7 months pregnant) calls me in a panic that her back tires are at low 20s. Being 65 miles away I tell her to go to nearest garage and ask for help. Let me start by saying I moved across town and I still drive to Luis Lopez Automotive to have my car worked on. First of all it's cute it's a historic building and the paint job is fresh and well maintained. Of course, that's not why I come but it's a bonus. Don't be fooled by the positive Yelp reviews like I was! I found this place on Yelp and was impressed by the great reviews, especially so many notes about them being honest and trustworthy, very appealing to me as someone who has been tricked by mechanics over the years. I also appreciated the convenience of being able to make an appointment via text... For those two reasons, I thought maybe I'd found a new regular mechanic so, when I was quoted $89 for an oil change, I went ahead with it even though that's almost double what I've paid in the past for my car. When I arrived for my appointment, I said to the man at the desk, "I don't know how the computer works in the car but if it's possible, when you reset the oil light, is there a button to push to reset the brake light warning light? My dash says my brake lights are out but I had a friend look and he said they're working." (Fiat's are known for electrical glitches so I assumed that's what it was.) He said the computer doesn't work like that but they'd check if the lights were actually out or not. In my mind, this would literally amount to one guy pressing the brakes while another guy stands in the back and looks for lights. Very simple. Note that he made no mention of repairing anything if they were out and I didn't agree to them doing any additional work besides the oil change. I went to the waiting area and 45 min later, I received a text that my car was ready and the total is $142.58. Holy *$%&! I went to the counter and asked what happened to the $89 quote!? It turns out two ($3) brake lights were actually out, so they took it upon themselves to change them and charge me an extra $44 WITHOUT MY APPROVAL. I was totally shocked and at risk of losing my temper so I just calmed myself and said "I wish you guys would've asked me before doing that" and paid and left. While I don't know a ton about cars, I know how to change light bulbs and could've replaced them myself for $6 but they didn't give me that option! Not to mention, due to an unexpected vet bill that week, the extra $44 charge put me dangerously close to overdrafting. It blows my mind that a mechanic would just apply this extra charge without approval. What if it had overdraft and cost me even more? Or if my card hadn't gone through, would they have kept my car? Luckily I didn't have to find out but the main reason I'm writing this review is to warn others who may not be so lucky! It gets worse though. Later that day, I decided to text them about my disappointment, recounting my experience very similar to the previous paragraphs here, and noted that I planned to post this review on Yelp but thought I'd give them the courtesy of responding to me before I did. I stupidly thought there was a chance they'd admit to their error of doing work without approval and offer to at least refund the labor fee for the lights. Nope. Here's their exact response: "I'm sorry to hear about your precarious financial predicament. However, I'm afraid I strongly disagree with your take on the services we provided today. We are not a charity or a non-profit. We are a for-profit small business that offers automotive services to address the automotive concerns of our customers. We addressed both concerns you brought to us today." Absolutely outrageous and incredibly rude for them to suggest that I expected charity or free work. Remember, I asked them to do nothing more than push a button to reset the brake light warning, if possible. I asked for no further work to be done and sure as heck didn't approve it. And I'm a small business myself and do not appreciate this condescending b.s. at all. Not only are they sneaky and dishonest they are entitled and rude. BEWARE! There's another review here from someone named Gisella C back on 10/13/2020. I read that review before I made my appointment and noticed Luis responded with something similarly curt about not working for free. I thought that was kind of rude but disregarded it as an outlier, assumed maybe there was more to the story.... man, I wish I'd taken that review and the other negative ones seriously and STAYED FAR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. Unfortunately we had our catalytic converter stolen and we needed it resolved. Called a few shops before we called Luis and didn't feel comfortable with the responses I was getting. When I spoke to Luis he was welcoming, honest and upfront. He made it clear he needed to see the car before he could quote a price. We left the car and in a few hours we had a detailed quote with everything that needed to be done via email,text and a phone call. He kept us updated and the car was ready for pick up, the day they said. Felt good about the transaction and the car felt great. I would definitely trust any future repairs to Luis Automotive. Having moved from NYC, I just learned how to drive last year and got my first flat tire last week. Luis Lopez Automotive is a professional, easy to work with business. I dealt with Luis himself who has an office where you can go over prices and options. They accept all major credit cards and cash. And while you're waiting you can enjoy the whimsical muffler men that Luis builds himself! Because of some of the Yelp reviewers who said they had to wait or were not serviced I called in advance to make sure there was availability. Luis answered the phone promptly and patiently walked me through finding the information on my tires so he could know what size and type I needed. I said I was concerned that I should replace both front tires so he said I should just come in for him to check it out. He was very friendly and made me feel at ease which means a lot to me because I often have anxiety dealing with people who I don't know very well. Luis told me my other tires were all in new and good condition and we went over options and prices for replacing the flat. We went with the Falkien Ziex ZE950 which matched my rear tires. It was around 5pm and he said he could have the tire in early the next morning. He called the next morning around 8:30am and I drove over on the spare. There are two waiting chairs outside the office so I sat and took pictures of the muffler men. One person before me was being helped, but soon they tended to my car and I had paid and was out of there in a little under 30 minutes. They also added air to all of my tires. Tire: $67.90 Labor: $15 Tax: 6.11 Total: 89.01 I'm sure you can get a tire changed for a little less at some other places, and probably for more, too! But, I feel confident knowing they take credit cards and operate as a legit business. I'd much rather come to a neighborhood staple like Luis Lopez than go to a big chain like Pep Boys (and the Pep Boys near me did not have the best reviews) so if I have any other car troubles I'll definitely come back. read more

his is a review of his attitude as I never got my car looked at. I was asked to bring my car in Tuesday Am so I could have an oil leak checked and come up with a plan to get it fixed before I headed home to san francisco on Saturday. I got there and was told he was a guy short. Ok can I bring it in later? no how about his afternoon? no. Well I'm in kind of a tight spot can you recommend anyone I"m new in town and don't know any shops? no there are plenty of other shops go to one of those. Guy, who I assume was Luis, had not one shred of being sorry that I came for an appointment and was not being helped. In a bad situation as I had to head of town in just a few days, and could not detect one ounce of empathy in any way. It was like I had an appointment, brought my car over, and his attitude was can't help you tough luck. So for all I know he might be a terrific mechanic. These guys overcharged me and couldn't solve my problem. I went here out of convenience - it's down the street from my house - and it was absolutely not worth it. After having brake shoes replaced at Luis Lopez- FOR $900 BECAUSE I'M YOUNG AND THEY TRICKED ME - my brakes were still being very weird, doing the same thing I brought them in for. I came back to say "these are still making crazy noises" and they claimed not to hear the noises. So, fed up, I brought the car to my usual shop, (farther away) where they immediately said "oh yeah that crazy noise, you need all new stuff" I said "i just got all new stuff! I spent $900 on all new stuff." They said "WHAT? This is awful we would have done that for $450, and they gave you cheap parts!" My mechanic called Luis Lopez and told him to stop using the brand of brake shoes he was using, that they are cheap and known to be terrible. Then I took the phone and asked Luis him why he charged me $900, that this place had quoted me $450 and I wondered what the markup was. We got in a screaming fight! I'm a poor young babysitter and they cheated me out of my savings. And, I STILL feel unsafe on the road!!!! **** this all happened in 2014, and I'm still so upset with them that I'm writing this review now. Don't be fooled by their cute muffler robots. I went there for the muffler robots! I'm sure Luis has many nice relationships with his regulars but for me Luis Lopez is an insensitive swindler who took advantage of my lack of expertise. I have never made a negative comment on yelp but in this situation this place rubbed me the wrong way and I don't appreciate being scammed. I work hard for my money and it's just not ok to be taken advantage. If I can select no stars I would. If you want to overpay this is the place!!!!! Prior to coming here I had taken my car to get a smog check and they told me my car needed the catalytic fixed otherwise was not going to pass. So, my husband seeing the great reviews decided to take the car here. The first issue I had was they charge a consult fee of $125???!!! I have been to many mechanics and have never been charged. That was the first red flag. They didn't even make an exception even though I told them the problem. Sure enough that was what they found wrong and quoted 1,400 on top of consult fee!!!!! There was no negotiation not even discounting consult fee or even 1/2 the cost since I already told them the problem. Anyways, decided to shop around and low and behold found a mechanic that did it for $680 and that was also including a tune up because I guess that has alot to do with the catalytic becomes defective. He's always fixed my car, except for once. He checked my car, but couldn't find the problem. And he still charged me, just to say, "We can't find the problem." I 100% trust these guys to take care of and fix my cars. Luis Jr & Sr have proven to be probably the most thorough, honest, and straightforward mechanics I've dealt with. For about 3 years now. I've been using Yelp for a long time - but this is my very 1st review because, honestly, it really bugged me to see some bad reviews here that (my opinion) I read as "misdirected anger at unpleasant news" rather than an "assessment of a bad business". Bad business is so NOT my experience here with this family: I'm a regular customer of these mechanics because I believe this shop is run by a skilled and ETHICAL family. I feel "covered" and more than secure because I know, based on my history with them, that they are being thorough and honest about the "health" of my cars. And seriously... genuinely... how cool is that?!? Again, bad business is so NOT my experience here. For example, l: Luis Jr told me in his straightforward way, some not great news about an ongoing air conditioning issue with my Jetta Diesel TDI. He said that they could fix it... BUT that I might be better off to have checked out by the dealer first - simply because it might end up costing me less for the dealer to do it, depending on some variables, which he then explained clearly. Come on - THAT'S "customer first" service. I've taken both of our cars in for different things over the last couple of years, because, again, bad business is so NOT my experience here: 1st time out, they went above and beyond to figure out a weird electrical issue with my older SUV that kept resetting the computer which was holding up my (procrastinated) smog test. Really. Above and beyond to get it figured out. So.. if Yelp thinks my review is too good and "culls it" (tho they left those odd 1 star reviews), perhaps the culling dept can look to see that I'm a real customer as I have even referred quite a few friends to my mechanic on Facebook. Louis' Sr. and Jr. obviously care more about their reputation than a quick buck. We've gone to them for years with my wife's beat-up Toyota and now my stupid Prius, and they simply get our cars fixed and charge for the time and parts.
