He's never overcharged me. Twice he's sent me home without charging me because what seemed like a problem to me really wasn't one, and one time he replaced a tube on my car right in front of me, bing-bang-boom. I trust him. He's communicative and a straight shooter who doesn't cook up problems where there aren't any, but he's done great work when I've needed it. If I could give Rod's Auto more than five stars, I would. I never leave reviews, but this auto repair shop saved my and my friends' life! No literally. While I was borrowing a friend's car, I was told by Rod's Auto Repair that it was a neglected car in such poor shape that it has never been serviced, a car with 140K+ mileage that's never been serviced... After Rod's Auto Repair serviced the car, they also found that the water pump was so broken on his car that it was at risk of the car breaking down on the road. Because my friend Maddy needed to borrow my friend's car, not only did Rod's Auto Repair first service Joe's car on April 16th this year when I was in person in LA, they also helped fix the water pump problem (and lots more!) while I was in Europe in the end of April/early May. My friend Maddy helped me/my friend pick it up and she even got a discount the second time because Maddy paid them in cash (thanks Venmo for helping me pay Maddy all the way from Paris!) :) See the difference in the before and after photos!! This is a mixed bag. The work they did is great and the price was very fair, but... He had my car 10 days, with no loner. Woof. He rarely answers the phone and does not call back. Finally, and biggest issue, he doesn't take credit cards, although his Yelp listing says he does, and he didn't mention that until the day of pickup. Had it been a small repair, fine, but it was 2k, and he expected me to just have it in cash. He does accept venmo, but with the 3% fee, it was almost an extra $100. I will never return. read more

My car alarm started to act out randomly on Saturday, obnoxiously going off when I tried to lock my car, start my car, manually unock my doors, exit the vehicle, etc. It was extremely frustrating and insanely embarrassing so I called the dealership to ask if there was a simple quick fix and they were unfortunately no help but mentioned that I could have someone who handles alarm systems tend to it as they were too busy. I consulted my Yelp app and it directed me to Rods. I called and explained my situation and the gent on the phone said they could take care of it for me after hearing my angered and helpless voice on the other end. While they couldn't exactly fix the issue entirely, they disarmed the sound and all was right again in the world. I still have to take it to the dealership, but Rods was instrumental in remedying the issue and did it completely free of charge. They get a serious high five and five solid stars. read more

TERRIBLE PERSON!!! I can't believe this guy actually parked my friends car ON THE STREET and watched it get a boot and tow and didn't even offer to cover the costs! He said he parked it at an unpaid meter on a public street and claimed that "he had no room at the shop so he had to move her car." THEN he had the audacity to print up a sign right before she went in to get her keys that said 'he wont take responsibility for cars he moved.' When my friend asked me to drive with her from her place in Hollywood to a "reputable" Honda dealership 10 miles away in Van Nuys because her car was making a clicking noise, I said "let's see if Yelp has something closer." Rod's Auto Repair was first place listed. Due to the unanimous 5 star reviews, I convinced my friend to give Rod's a try. When we arrived we were very skeptical about the accuracy of this place's reputation. It dose not have a "5 star" appearance, but we parked and walked up. Jose was standing out front. We explained the noise and he said "let's go drive it." He listened to the noise and said he would lift it up to look underneath and he'd call us in a hour. He called within 30 minutes, said the tire was coming off but he fixed it and we could come pick it up. When we arrived to pick it up, my friend went to get her wallet to pay and he said not to worry about it. Wow! We couldn't believe the service Jose just earned himself another longtime customer. I mean, where the f*$k do I begin...(at the beginning) haha wise ass... OK, having moved a few months ago from DC (worthless city) we took our SUV to get CA plates and low and behold were slapped in the metaphorical ass with SMOG! To make a very, very, long convoluted story as short as possible, the "check engine" light was on so the smog testers wouldn't even test it bc it would fail. So off on the great hunt for the elusive "mechanic that won't screw us" search. After getting totally jammed up the tuckus by some POS (piece of sh*t) which I will totally Yelp the yelp out of those b*tches later, but back to my glowing review of Rods... After we got screwed for $1500 and made zero progress with Satan's smoggers, little baby Jesus sent us Rods Auto Repair. I gotta say, ours was not an easy case. I don't know bllleeeeep about cars, so I won't bother with the details. At first I wanted to throw a flaming bag of poo at Rod's because they couldn't easily fix the problem and I have the patience of a toddler, but the waiting paid off. Jose, was ultimately the best thing that happened to our Nissan Pathfinder that was bore in the pit of hell. It took some time, but I swear it was only partially due to the car and also to the fact that Rod's is always busy. It can be a double edged sword if you are in a hurry, but it's busy because he is honest and does the job well. He fixed the car, got it smog tested and passed for us, plus lent me his BMW for a week to drive while the car was in his shop and taking longer than expected (bc the car is a pain in the ass and should've blown up a decade ago). Thanks to Jose and Rod's Auto our junker is back on the road, terrorizing the streets of LA, but totally legal with CA plates and 100% pass on smog and until I run it into a telephone pole or drive it head first into the Pacific off the Santa Monica Pier this sh*t mobile is aces. I brought my 15 year old Nissan truck to Jose after a botched pre-smog-test tune-up at another garage. I gave the other mechanic $400 dollars, he gave me back a truck with a check engine light on. Hurgh. After multiple trips and many wasted afternoons in the sweltering lava death pit of North Hollywood summer heat, the original mechanic said he could not fix my problem. Wha--? You broke it. How can you not fix it??? It was a "sensor" issue, he said, probably going to cost a lot to replace, he said. I heard that familiar CA-CHING sound ringing in my ears. The original mechanic then referred me to a sleezeball "friend" of his who asked for a $150 bribe to make sure I would pass my smog emissions test -- not to fix my truck or even diagnose WHY the check engine light had come on after my tune-up. If I actually wanted stuff fixed, it would cost me another $125 to start-- just for the diagnosis. I bolted. I scurried home and got online, scoured Yelp and found Jose at Rods Auto Repair. I read all the stellar reviews, crossed my fingers and took the plunge. I called him and he said to bring the truck in at 8 am the next day and he would keep it all day, pull all the "check-engine" codes from the little diagnostic machine thing they have and then go through the engine parts one by one to see what the fred was going on under my hood. Cost for the diagnosis: $90 bucks. True to his word, Jose found the problem. A wire (clearly an important one!) under the air filter had come lose during my tune-up and the other mechanic hadn't realized it. He might have if he had actually CHECKED HIS WORK on one of my multiple return trips to his garage. "You are a genius," I say to Jose over the phone. "I love you." I am now so thrilled and relieved that I will actually be able to take my smog test before my car registration expires, that I forget to ask Jose how much his genius is going to cost me. I hop in a cab and when I get there, Jose plops down an invoice in front of me: $90 bucks. I did a double take. At first I thought it said $900. And I'm like, "Did you forget to add labor and stuff?" (because i'm stupid honest, or maybe just stupid). Jose says, "No. I just had to solder the wire back into place. No charge for the labor." Holy ... huh? An actual, real-life-not-just-on-TV-honest-mechanic who gives tune-up abused girls a break?! In Los Angeles? No humping way. "We might have to marry this man," I say to my truck on the drive home. Just went there recently for a burned out headlight. Were in and out in a few minutes and charged hardly anything. Just went today because there was a screw in the tire tread and was worried. They took it out, made sure tire was fine, checked pressure on tires, and filled up air. All for no charge. They said there was nothing to fix. I wanted to at least leave a tip but they said they're paid to do this. First class service and always easy going and friendly. Most importantly, they are honest. read more

My car overheated after work, and rather than have it towed to the nearest (closed) auto repair, I asked to have it towed to my house in West Hollywood. I took the evening to figure out which of the five or six shops in a half mile radius to bring it to in the morning, and based on reviews, I went with Rod's. I'm so glad I did! They found the problem--my fan had disconnected--and charged me just for the labor, with nary a suggestion of any other work that might need to be done. Several days after the repair, on my way to work, my coolant warning light came on, so I dropped in (a little freaked out), and Jose completely calmed me down and sent me on my way. I was very happy with this shop, the work done on my car, and the customer service. My car needed the front brakes replaced and I called around on a Monday morning, but a lot of shops quoted me $200 to $250 and did not have appointments until Thursday. This place quoted me $150 and told me that I could bring my car in the same day. I brought my car in at 10:30AM, but since I didn't have an appt unfortunately it took a while for it to get seen and fixed. Until 6pm to to be exact. When I came back to get my car, I was just kind of tired of waiting. Jose gave me a voucher for a free oil change for next time that I come in without me even saying anything, as a courtesy for the long wait. It's a small shop, the staff is knowledgable, honest, and caring. My brakes were replaced for a good price, the same day I called, and I have not had any problems with my brakes after they were replaced. I was impressed with Rods Auto Repair and will definitely be back. read more

Jose is honest. He fixes both my Toyota and BMW. My radiator went on the Toyota, the replacement part was shoddy, but he fixed it again free of charge. The alternator went on the BMW, I had it towed to him and he dropped everything to get her back on the road. He and his friends dont' love Barca as much as me, but I can forgive that. read more

I started with oil changes and moved up to real repairs when I needed my brakes fixed then when I got in a fender bender. Jose is knowledgable and willing to work with your particular needs.
