The doughnuts they get brought in from Dough during the weekends are to die for. That being said, you'll need to wake up damn early if you want to get the cinnamon sugar ones, because I live right across the street and the first thing I do when I wake up on Sat/Sun is walk over and buy most of them. Sorry; not sorry ;). That being said, they have the best bagels in the neighborhood, and the lox are really rad. Their drinks are great too. I have never regretted anything I've ordered at Lula, ever. The only thing I've regretted is not ordering more. If you show up during a busy time (which is most of the time, since it's so popular), I would suggest just taking out if you can. It's a small shop and gets very crowded. That being said, if you get lucky and stop by when it isn't busy, sitting at the big glass windows is a lot of fun. The counter tops are like old small-parts organizers filled with nuts, bolts, screws, etc. with glass panels resting on top of them. It's a really cool aesthetic that I haven't seen before. In spite of how busy it gets, the staff are pretty adept at filling orders in an efficient way. It isn't necessarily first-come-first-serve, nor should it be: if the person in front of me orders 3 different toasted bagels and two complicated coffees, and I'm next and just order some doughnuts, the staff member at the register will just quickly grab my order and send me on my way. This may seem like it slows down the line a bit, but that's a fallacy; it's the right way to fill orders. The person at the register grabbing my doughnuts won't make the triple-bagel/double complicated coffee order (that was already paid for) take any longer. Not to mention, all customers MUST sign the receipts when using a credit/debit card, so the cashier can be grabbing my stuff while I'm doing that. It's as efficient as it can be. The following is probably the most nit-picky criticism in history, but if I HAD to criticize anything, it would have to be the way the line naturally forms. They can't really do anything about it due to space-constraints, so it isn't really something that can be improved, but during busy times, the only place the line can form is right along the counter. Unfortunately, because of the little section that lifts up for staff to enter/exit the kitchen area, as well as the little door that leads downstairs to what I presume is storage, customers in line need to space themselves out accordingly, lest they end up blocking one of these pathways. This makes the line stretch longer than it otherwise would, as there must be two gaps in the line. Combine this with how busy the store gets, and it's often difficult to tell who is in line and who isn't. I end up having to awkwardly ask people whether or not they're in line almost every time I show up during a busy hour. If someone isn't paying attention and stands in front of one of the staff pathways when a staff member is trying to get through, everyone behind them ends up having to shuffle backwards, which can be difficult in such a small, crowded space. I don't really see of a way they could realistically modify the layout to improve the line. However, one suggestion would be really push using an app like Seamless/Grubhub during the peak hours (maybe give a little discount for doing so?). That way, people could hang out outside/nearby and just stop in to pick up their order when it's ready. That could do a lot to reduce the line clutter when it's busy, which would open up a lot of room in the store. I should note that Lula IS on Grubhub/Seamless, but it doesn't list the open hours. Furthermore, right now (10:43 AM on a Saturday), Grubhub states that it is closed, when I was literally there like an hour ago, so I know for a fact it's open. I understand that their delivery staff might not be available at all hours the store itself is open, but as long as the store is open, i wish I could place an order ahead of time for takeout. it would be nice if I could place my order and pay ahead of time, and then just run over to the store when I get the text alert that my order is ready. Still, it doesn't list their delivery/pickup hours in the app (this could be a bug?), so I'm not sure exactly what the deal is. Put that in perspective though - that's my only criticism, and it's exceedingly minor. Furthermore, the fact that the place is so frequently crowded is indicative of its quality. LBREAM! read more

My friends and I popped in on a Sunday afternoon and--wow--this is the exact hole in the wall bagel place you dream of going to when you visit New York City. I had a toasted bagel with lox spread and tomato and it was so good I had to have a second one. The bagel was the perfect consistency of chewiness and they were very generous with the very tasty cream cheese. The vibe of the place was so relaxed with great service and great music playing. Friend from out of town were staying in Prospect / Lefferts, took them up to Eastern Parkway and Nostrand to grab a bagel from Lula. The cold brew was great and my salt bagel with cream cheese, lox, red onions and capers was great. These bagels aren't as doughy and thick as other NY bagel places, but overall the visitors were pleased. Nice addition to the neighborhood. Great location - two short blocks to the subway station (3 line), right in front of the B44 bus stop and right on a busy street. Their coffee is great. The bagels are just OK (I've had better) but their steel cut oatmeal is absolutely delicious and quite possibly one of the best and healthiest choices for breakfast. If you plan to hang out, they have WiFi and play music at a decent volume so you can still think. My biggest complaint is that they have no bathrooms. I really can't sit and enjoy several cups of coffee, oatmeal and the Wi-Fi without the safety net of a nearby toilet before I get on the subway. So I mostly use this place for a stop and grab but spend my mornings off at some of the other spots in the neighborhood. read more

I walk past this spot every day on my way to the train, and it is always packed. I pledged that I would try it the first time I walked by and saw no line, which happened to be this morning. Verdict: it's good! But not great? It's fine. Not sure what all the fuss is about. Pretty decent. Bagel was nice and chewy, but while not stale it was not super fresh either. I was very happy with the lox though - have definitely paid much more in NYC for smaller quantities of worse lox. Really it's a 3-3.5 star type of deal but I give them 4 stars because service was very friendly and the vibe was comfortable. I would have given this place 4 stars if it wasn't for the bad service. Although I love the bagels and the cream-cheeses here, and it is great to have a bagel place nearby, I have never had a good experience with the customer service. The manager is always very rude, and the employees look miserable most of the time. They don't seem to care whether or not they burn a bagel (which is about 50% of the time), or make a consistent product. Also, if a customer says that their order has been messed up/they didn't get what they thought they had ordered, the staff acts like it is a HUGE inconvenience that isn't their problem. I do enjoy the bagels, but I really hope that this place can get its' customer service act together. I have overheard numerous people mumbling about the service, and honestly, I wouldn't even feel comfortable sitting and eating in there. I get my bagel and get out. Good bagel, I'll give the chef that. Tried this place and after waiting for the dude to finish his conversation with his bud I order a small coffee and bagel with cc. He needs my name for this huge order with like 5 people in the store. Then, I effing kid you not, he pours my small coffee, takes two steps over to the "serving area" and says my name out loud, calling for me to get my coffee. Instead of just handing it to me. It was weird. Sadly, the coffee was terrible too. All water, overextracted, you wonder who the hell is drinking that coffee? Poor bastards. My girlfriend and I go here often and it's one of her favorite neighborhood spots. I've had a hankering for a good bagel with lox in the neighborhood and couldn't find anything so her showing it to me was great. The bagels themselves are good, and the lox with the works passable, but I always find they could toast mine more (but I'm being picky). It does get busy but the service is fast. I definitely need to try their other sandwiches but I always want a classic bagel. It loses a star for the coffee though - my girlfriend likes their regular coffee, but their espresso drinks are always burnt and watery. I'm not a big coffee fiend, but for the price, the coffee just isn't worth it. In general this place is a bit pricey which I'm sure they can pull off because there aren't many other bagel places nearby. However, their spinoff restaurant Lula Bird next door, is to DIE for. Seriously my girlfriend and I went there on our first date and the food itself sealed the deal. I've lived a few blocks away from and frequented Lula for 4 years, and this is a very well-earned review. I can never decide between the tuna and egg (it sounds kinda weird, but it's soooo good) sandwich and the egg, cheddar, avocado and tomato bagel because they are both amazing. All of their ingredients are fresh and selected with care. There's crack in the iced chai, I'm sure of it. And the banana bread. This is the only place in town I'm willing to drop $17 on breakfast when I'm hungover, and I've never regretted it. Plus they have free printing! The worst establishment I have ever been to!! I went there about 2 weeks ago to order a bagel around 4:30pm (they close at 5) I waited in line for a while behind some girls getting heros. I asked the girl at the counter what spread she reccomended and she told me her favorites. I said ok ill take one on a bagel, she said we can't toast because its getting late. I said sure. All the sudden a man making the sandwiches tapped her on thw shoulder and whiapered something in her ear. She then told me that they were closed and couldn't serve me. I was suprised because she had just discussed my order with me for a few minutes. I said your still making the other girls sandwich what's the big deal? And she said no you have to leave we're closed. Mind you it was not 5pm yet. I was shocked at how rude they were at denying me service. I have given this new establishment 3 fair chances to win me over and they have failed each time. The atmosphere of the place reminds you that we are in the midst of the "Hipster Takeover", in Crown Heights (which is really upsetting this BKNY native). The eclectic shop design and 80's punk band music playing in the background -- are the only elements that give this place character. The menu is limited but suffice if all you are seeking is a quick cup of tea, java or cocoa and an appropriate morning commute/midday sandwich. But I am a BKNY native, and customer service trumps everything!! This staff has a LOT to learn. I have interfaced with different counter staff and they have all been rude and stand their looking at me like I should be lucky they are there. No smile, no help with the menu (perhaps recommend something, jerk!) they seem to think asking your name with the order adds some personalization? Not when you don't use my name to call me when my order is ready and you spell my name wrong, even after I have recited it's spelling 5 times! Unfortunately, transplanted NY'ers believe being rude is the NY thing to do... well it's not.... what it will get you is an authentic NY ass whooping and word of mouth reputation to avoid your shop, resulting in the shuttering of your shop doors and taking the next bus back to Nebraska, Wisconsin or Indiana... with your tattoos and all! =( Pay a visit to Tom's Diner (30 years plus in the same BK corner location) or perhaps - Juniors or perhaps Katz's or perhaps Nick's... do I need to go on?
