Stopped at Lulu's Cafe and Bar on Saturday, the 13th for lunch. Had their Smoke House Burger and Lulu Chips. Advertised as having "smoky blend of spices" and "sharp cheddar cheese." The burger was bland, nearly tasteless by itself. I added more salt than my normal just to get it to taste like something. I could taste no spices, smoky or otherwise. The "sharp" cheddar was mild at best. More like colby. I wound up just eating the meat. As advertised the chips were very thick cut. No salt on them at all. The "tangy bleu cheese sauce" tasted just like thin yogurt. I left most of the meal behind. Would not recommend. read more

I went to LuLu Cafe with my mom and our waiter, Joel, was outstanding! He was very friendly, accommodating, and provided exceptional customer service. For lunch we shared the homemade chips with blue cheese dip (our favorite!) and we split the Roasted Vegetable Salad with chicken. We love coming to Lulu Cafe and we've been coming here for years. It's hard to believe I've lived here my whole life and somehow managed to not eat at Lulu's once during my many ventures to Bay View they opened in 2001. I was pretty excited to finally check out what I've heard so many talk about. Ample outdoor seating is available during the summer months but we opted for a window seat for two to watch everything go by outside and take in the cool decor & painting inside. We were seated right away and promptly greeted by our friendly waitress. The menu had so many great options it was hard to choose but I opted for the chipotle chicken pita. Food arrived pretty quickly and looked good. The Asian salad was delicious! I'm not usually a fan of peanuts in any salad but everything worked together & I loved every bite of that salad. The chips looked so delicious but weren't seasoned at all. A sprinkling of salt and possibly pepper would've made those chips perfect. The chipotle chicken pita was okay. I didn't pick up much chipotle, although I appreciate spicier foods. The chicken tasted more blackened, which I also like, but was just expecting more chipotle than grill. Overall, I'm happy I finally made it to Lulus. I'll be back to try something else on the menu! read more

Looking for a convenient place to eat before heading to Summerfest, we decided to return to Lulu Cafe after many years away. As always, the atmosphere was on point. Starting with the mid century mod logo, walking in you feel the eclectic vibe that's been a mainstay of this restaurant for years. The service was attentive but not intrusive and the food came out in a reasonable time. The food is where I was left wanting more. The Smokehouse Chicken was bland. It needed some type of additional sauce or aioli to elevate the sandwich. The chips, while homemade were under seasoned. They do offer blue cheese dip with the chips but I didn't get that. I feel the chips should be able to stand on their own. The asian slaw, maybe the most flavorful thing on the plate, was so wet that the bun of the sandwich soaked up all the juices, making it taste like the asian slaw. I'll go back but probably stick to one of the numerous salads next time. read more

Lulu Cafe is overhyped. I'd been recommended this place by quite a few people and I couldn't hep but feel a bit disappointed by it all. For starters, it is really dim in the restaurant. After about 10 minutes, they dropped the lighting even further, which made it difficult to see. A small votive at each table would really help the situation. Secondly, my chair's armrest was broken and on one side was no longer attached to the chair itself. Someone with the party behind us came and swapped out his chair for one at the empty table next to us, remarking there was a loose spring that was poking him. As for the food, everything was pretty bland. I went with the K.K. Philly, which was tough, dry, and under seasoned. It wasn't inedible, in fact, I ate most of it. But it wasn't good. My dining companion went with the Chipotle Chicken Pita, which he said was just okay and suffered from the same issues as the K.K. Philly. For sides, we went with a little bit of Asian slaw and a little bit of chips. It's great that they've got that option for people who like to try some of everything, which I do. However, the chips (which I've heard plenty of people rave about) were in desperate need of a healthy dose of salt. The size and crunch were fantastic, but it tasted like cardboard without seasoning the heck out of it yourself. The Asian slaw was the best thing I tasted during our trip to Lulu Cafe, but even that was only pretty good. Service wasn't exceptional, either. Our server was pleasant enough, albeit a little quiet. But it took an absurdly long amount of time for us to pay the bill. They process credit cards with a small handheld device and a tablet, but our server said there's only one of them for the whole restaurant. So it took roughly 20 minutes for it to come around to us. Our server was nice about it though, and he took off the credit card processing fee since it took so long. I don't plan on visiting Cafe Lulu again. The poor lighting, uncomfortable seating, bland food, and inefficient payment system is enough for me to forgo another visit. There are a dozen other Bay View area restaurants I'd recommend before I'd get to this place. read more

Lulu Cafe is just down the street from us and one of our go to spots in Bayview. The giant front windows were open for the nice day and we sat right by them. I will say, it was PACKED in there on a Tuesday night. There were maybe 3 open tables when we walked in around 6:30pm. We were sat right away and the hostess and our server were very friendly. I got the Moroccan Chicken Sandwich and my husband got the Sesame Pita. You get so much bang for your buck here, as they load the plate up with food. You have the choice of chips or slaw or a little bit of both as a side. I always opt for a little bit of both with the bleu cheese dressing on the side for my chips. Our food was delicious and came out quickly, especially for how busy it was. We are moving out of the neighborhood soon, but will definitely have to come back to visit one of our favorite spots. read more

Came in for lunch on Friday. They have a great selection of sandwiches - I settled on the special, a seared tuna advertised as marinated in dill & Dijon. I opted to sub pita because their pitas looked amazing. Went for the 50/50 slaw and chips - totally the way to go. Highlight was the sides for sure. Tuna was cooked perfectly but any flavor of dill, Dijon, seasoning in general was totally lacking. My husband said is faux bahn mi was also a bit sad. Service was fab and the dining room was spacious and bright. I'd come back for drinks and perhaps to try another pita. Solid lunch option for sure. read more

My out-of-town guests enjoyed their cocktails and wine and, since they had been here once before, they immediately ordered the fresh hot chips with blue cheese sauce. Always loved cafe lulu but had a weird experience this weekend. Came in for brunch and they had a latke option (though they didn't call it that). Asked if I could get apple sauce or sour cream- the server said i wouldn't like it (what?). Asked again when the food was brought and it was clearly a latke and it was another employee. She also told me I wouldn't like it because there were chives in the latke? Again if they just didn't have these as options i would understand but two different staff told me I wouldn't like a potato latke with chives and sour cream or applesauce. Great experience! Came here with a friend for lunch on a Saturday. We met at 12 and easily got seated. By the time we finished, it was hopping! There are daily specials, I got the KK Philly, and i could modify it to my liking. Service was excellent. Food was great. After all these years of living in Milwaukee, this was my first time to Lulu. I have to say, it was my mistake. The food, service, and atmosphere was all wonderful. We were greeted immediately by a very welcoming host and then shortly after by a very friendly server. We sat on the patio and had a great time watching all the cars and bikers and people walking by. We ordered a beer each, the faux banh mi sandwich, and the East Indian chicken pita. We both ordered our sandwiches with "a little of each" of the homemade potato chips and Asian coleslaw. Everything was fresh and tasty. The steak on the faux banh mi was cooked perfectly and I really enjoyed the level of sesame oil in the Asian slaw. It was a really lovely evening. Cut up veggies with wrap were hot as can be..Looks like somone added hot pepper by mistake; that was a first. The CHICKEN WAS ALL BURNED BLACK so much of each little piece had to be cut off which did not leave much left.. That was a first. I'm changing my five star review for Lulu's because consistency is key in the restaurant business. Some of Lulu's sandwiches are great, and some of them are tasteless. The felafel pita and the Mediterranean steak pita are filled with multiple layers of deliciousness, while the East Indian Chicken pita and roasted vegetable pita have little flavor. It's hit or miss. The same goes for the service at Lulu's. Some of the wait staff are with it, tending to your needs, while others are spacey, not quite comprehending, off in their own world of "what shape is the earth? It must be flat, or we'd fall off." I like Lulu's, but I'm better off ordering the same thing every time and asking for a server's ACT scores before sitting down. read more

Pretty ginger beer heavy but that's perfect for my taste. The Moroccan chicken sandwich was so tasty and juicy with a delicious sauce on it!! Highly recommend! It's been a little while, but I wasn't surprised by the quality of the meal (I had the special pork chop of the week..outstanding!), I was surprised at how comparatively inexpensive it was. From my experience, great value and easy to find at $17-$19 vs the $13 I paid.). Also, Bonnie our server was helpful and attentive.
