I would probably not be the best person to leave a review for a restaurant. Especially one with an "Asian flair." Or maybe I am exactly that person. The person who can see through the fluff. The one who understands the import-aint's... and the import-NOT's. I was invited by a friend to one of the grand openings of this place. Or maybe one of many openings. I'm honestly not sure when it became a trend for restaurants to have a month-long grand opening, but I have mixed feelings about it. It used to be a training night. A live run for friends and family. Make sure that everything "fires" printers print, credit cards process, food actually gets delivered to the correct tables, schedules are functional, and all systems GO. Usually that happens after getting the OK from the health department, then the CO, and then after a few weeks of ironing out the kinks... you throw a party. Today the party lasts several weekends. And honestly? I kind of like that. It's not just Yelpers, food critics, publicists, and local publications anymore. It's normal people. People like us. Now the location itself used to be "not so great," but after the tollway expansion past George Bush Turnpike, it became... good and stable for an immediate 5 mile radius service. The restaurant itself was what you would expect from a modern Dallas spot. Different zones everywhere: dining room, lounge, bar, community table, patio -- though the patio was closed during my visit. We ordered a couple appetizers and a few snazzy named drinks. The Duck on Fire prepared tableside was unexpected, and at $100+, it definitely needed some flair. Here's the thing though: I eat a lot of duck. The duck itself? Maybe a 7 out of 10. Maybe 7.5 because of the tableside presentation. Now here's the most important part. Is it a MUST TRY? Yes. Absolutely. Have I ever been back? No. And that says something. Maybe it wasn't memorable enough. Maybe it was my wife's mood. Maybe it was the company. Maybe it was that strange little "je ne se WTF" feeling you sometimes leave with. It's not that I alone can make or break a restaurant. But it is me not coming back at least one more time. And maybe that matters more today than ever in a saturated Dallas retail duck market where duck somehow became the new fad. duck faat? :) Maybe I also didn't discover this place on my own, and maybe that changes the psychology of the experience entirely. Maybe i did not recommended to anyone because i just came back from China and missed the vision of a "black swan" on fire by the table side, entirely. At the end of the day, the question becomes simple: Why did i not come back to this place where i choose "Chinese" for dinner every time. are we discovering a new concept of food? "Honey, do you feel like Pizza or Chinese? Perhaps Modern chinese ?" Nah. Than what is it? "Is your duck better than mine?" Go eat the ducks and decide for yourself. I personally refuse to pay this kind of money for a duck that sells for $14 at H-Mart. Or is it a GOOSE ? That is Oksana question. Lulu or NOT. Decided to try this place out after finding it on yelp. The review here is mixed but I'm giving the restaurant 4 stars in support of the two items that we had that were actually good. Let's start with the good. We ordered the Taiwanese fried rice and general TSO chicken and both dishes were well executed and came out timely. The chicken was flash fried perfectly and the sweet and sour sauce that they cook it in is well balanced and just complements the meat really well. If you are a sweet and savory lover- this dish is for you. Portion was decent for both rice and chicken for the price at roughly 22 for rice and 24 for the chicken. The concerning meal was the half Peking duck that came out 30-40 min post order. Our waitress did inform us of a possible wait but it made the experience lack luster without being able to pair it with our other dishes- specifically the rice. I would have waited for everything to be prepared to come out at once, but we weren't given that option. I would not recommend ordering the half duck. We went with the half because we weren't hungry enough to do a whole so we thought that option was perfect. To our dismay after waiting 40 min, the duck came out cold and the flavor wasn't there for us. It was a big disappointment and after letting the waitress know that the duck was cold, she just offered to microwave it to reheat and I didn't want that option as the skin was already too tough for chewing. I watched them carve out several full ducks as table side service and wasn't impressed with the thoroughness of the deboning and meat plating. They leave so much meat on the duck bones and for $100+ ... I need all my meat. Lol I wouldn't order the duck again if we come back. The last thing that took us by surprise was that our waitress asked us what flavor do we want to essentially flash fry the duck bone in. She presented it as though it was an extension of our duck selection where they take the bones from the duck and dry it in sauce and batter to get the benefit of the meat that is left on the bones. We weren't all that interested but since it was asked, we provided a flavor of choice. The bone frying took an additional 30-40 min ! Could not believe it and when we got the bones it was literally batter on bones. We ask for the check immediately so that we could leave and to our surprise, the fried bones were itemized for an additional 10 dollars. Waitress never made any mention of this coming at a cost and given how much longer it took, I was just taken aback by them charging anything to fry left over bones from a duck that we paid for. I thought the situation was distasteful and didn't appreciate that the waitress presented this as an extension of the duck selection vs an add on. The duck wasn't flavorful enough to naw at the bones and especially not enough for 10 dollars. Drinks are priced a little high especially for Plano. Paid $25 for a basic smoked old fashion drink. The service staff was nice but our experience was tainted a bit by the lack of education of the menu and just overall transparency throughout the dining experience. I'd go back for the rice and maybe try some other meals as I do think that they use quality food to prepare. I'd probably do pick up- ambiance was okay. I didn't get dim lighting or chill vibes. Decor is giving Austin powers meets Z Gallery with a dash of Chinese influence. Decor was all over the place. read more

Finally checked this place out for its famous Peking duck! The staff brought out a cart and carved the duck tableside, which was really neat to watch. The space is modern and comfortable without trying too hard, and the food actually delivers. The moment you walk in, the sleek, chic atmosphere sets the stage for an incredible meal. The Xiao Long Bao is the real highlight - thin, delicate skin, plenty of savory broth, and that authentic flavor you hope for. Just really well done. I also tried the Kungfu Panda cocktail, which blends baijiu, sake, and soju. The baijiu comes through clearly but doesn't take over - it adds a nice, distinct kick that works well with the meal. We happened upon Lulu's as we were searching for chinese cuisine. So, glad we stumbled upon this great spot. The ambiance was a cross between asian and ultra modern, we loved it. Adeola was our magnificent server. She had great suggestions for what we may like and she was spot on with the ideas and her service. We started with the Xiao Long Bao, homemade in house and they were so good (we even got to watch the chef making these). I decided to have the Wagyu Spring roll as my meal, and it was out of this world. Full of flavor, with a satisfying journey on my pallet. The side rice our server recommended was probably some of the most robust flavors I have ever encountered in a fried rice, simply delicious and paired well with the golden prawns. I chose this restaurant to celebrate my birthday with my family and made reservations a week in advance. We even called ahead to confirm our reservation, and prepaid for the Peking duck in advance so we were shocked when, just two minutes before our scheduled reservation time, the hostess called to tell us that our table was not ready. She asked if we could wait at the bar and, when I asked how long the wait would be, she said she wasn't sure but that it could be about an hour. To make matters worse, she suggested that we place our food order while waiting. After about 15 minutes, we were finally seated, but the table was set up for five people even though our reservation was for six. An extra chair was squeezed in for my adult son, leaving us cramped and uncomfortable throughout the meal. The service only deteriorated from there. Our first course, the Peking duck, arrived in a reasonable amount of time and was enjoyable. However, the next dish, Szechuan chicken, did not arrive until about 45 minutes later. The dish was supposed to be served with rice, but despite repeatedly asking for it, the rice did not arrive for another 20 minutes. By then, the chicken had gone cold and was nearly gone because we were hungry and had no choice but to start eating. The fried rice that followed looked more like plain steamed rice than fried rice. We then had to wait for utensils because none were provided. When the soup arrived, we once again had to ask for bowls, and it took more than 20 minutes for them to arrive. At that point, our patience had run out. After spending more than two hours at the restaurant dealing with delays, missing items, and constant service issues, we decided to cancel the final two dishes. A manager came over, apologized, and offered discounts on the bill. While the gesture was appreciated, the issue was never about the money. It was about the experience. This was supposed to be a special birthday dinner with my family, and unfortunately the evening was completely ruined. Between the reservation problems, poor pacing of the meal, repeated service failures, and lack of attention to basic details, this was one of the most disappointing dining experiences we have had. My review is of the happy hour. I went after they were open for a month. They were out of a lot of the food options. I really wanted to try the mushroom fried rice so I was glad they were finally able to prepare that for us. The drinks on the happy hour menu were more than $10 but the bartender modified them to use happy hour liquor and made those for us at the happy hour price so that was really nice. The drinks were really good. The once upon a flame and pretty n lychee cocktails were really good. Overall it's a good happy hour. Celebrated a family birthday and booked the duck in advance ( which is mainly why we came ). The food was pretty good - if you like duck, it's worth the visit. We also tried the shrimp shumai, fried wagyu dumplings, bao buns, sichuan crispy chicken, kimchi and cheese fried rice, and fries. Personally, the chicken was too salty for me, and the dumplings were just ok . But I would come back for the duck and kimchi rice . It does take them a while to get any food out . Our reservation was for 8 and our first dish didn't come out til 8:40 . And the order of bringing stuff out was kind of awkward as they brought out the bao buns by the very end of our meal when there wasn't really anything to eat them with. Drinks: I had the Wayfinder Martini and Pretty N Lychee. Solid espresso martini and the lychee drink was sweet and tarte-perfect balance. I definitely recommend their drinks! Food: For appetizers, we tried the Lulu's Wagyu Roll, Fried Dumplings, Crab & Pork Xiao Long Bao, and Wagyu Xiao Long Bao. For entree, we got the cumin Lamb on Sizzling Plate and Mapo Tofu. Overall, the food was okay. Everything was decent, but nothing stood out to us. They were out of Peking duck, but I will for sure come back to try that! I have been in the search for the perfect Mapo Tofu in Dallas. I have yet to find it, but the Mapo Tofu here was good. Next time, I would order it again with extra Sichuan peppercorns. Make reservations for 5:30 and was disappointed that the Peking duck experience needs to be reserved in advance. First meal here an impromptu decision for Friday lunch. It wasn't crowded at all. Plenty of parking. Ambiance very nice, bright, classy comfortable with a good looking bar. Service was terrific - they were very responsive. We had the cucumber salad, pork XLB, Chinese broccoli, hot and sour soup, and 1/2 duck. The duck was delicious and well presented with several accompaniments. Crispy skin, moist tender meat, and the pancakes were individually separated. Nice touch. Chinese broccoli was good, perfectly done and nice flavor. Hot and sour soup was filled with ingredients and was ok. The pork XLB had thin skin on bottom, thicker on top and plenty of flavorful broth which was fattier than usual. They serve it with a sweet vinegar (it looked like what you would normally get with the ginger slices but was sweet) - which was not good and didn't go well with the dumplings. We asked for normal black vinegar. Much better. The cucumbers were terrible. Would not recommend getting. Super oily and lacked the dimensional flavors of salt, vinegar, and garlic. We sent it back for them to doctor up and it came back slightly better but not good. Wouldn't order that again. We saw several whole ducks come out which were presented well. Amazing soft opening visit, we think we were underdressed but felt really welcome. Sat at the bar as we were not planning on eating. Just a couple of cocktail drinks and maybe some appetizer or dessert as we were ending our. We ended up getting their strawberry shortcake which was very nice treat after a long week. Not too sweet but enough to dream of its fluffy goodness, piled high with fresh strawberries and a cloud of whipped cream. We had an incredible NYE Dinner at this new gem of a restaurant in Plano, Lulu Modern Chinese. The food, service, and ambiance were all spot on fantastic. The food isn't old school Asian nor is it Americanized Asian, it is in a separate category that they appropriately call "Modern." The restaurant is beautiful and hits perfectly at the point where a suit & tie / dress or jeans & a nice shirt meet. The service is friendly and professional. Everyone working, from one of the owners (who was also busing tables) to the waiters, bartenders, host, and food runners were smiling and happy. The live music was wonderful and once again they hit perfect target with volume. We could clearly hear the musician and could also hear each other talking without having to speak loudly. The presentation of all dishes was well done and fit the elevated, but still comfortable target. The tableside flaming whole duck stole the show and resulted in many cell phone videos and appreciation of the guest. The duck was cripsed to perfection and tasty. The optional sugar and pineapple tableside was an added bonus. The Beef Short Ribs was Terry's favorite and he's already planning our next visit to have it again. The Truffled Egg was amazing and without a doubt the best we've ever had. A definite MUST order. The Tiger Prawns were a very elevated take on the Americanized Walnut Chicken dish and even people that aren't fans of the typical dish in other restaurants should try this version. The Chocolate Moose was delicious without being overly sweet. Had the chance to check out Lulu Modern Chinese while visiting family for the first time in the Plano area. We came in late with a family of four and had a wonderful time. The Peking duck is made tableside to order and is a show complete with fire and chef cut meat to end. The meat is juicy and the skin pieces melt in your mouth. I had the Sichuan crispy chicken to myself and the nice mild heat is similar though less intense to the famous Chongqing variety. The loofah is cooked perfectly for a vegetable that can untenable when underdone. The green beans were made perfectly with black sauce and spice. The fried red snapper was made perfectly with a nice spice. I prefer it without the spice as a dry guy. My spouse tried the Tokyo Drift cocktail special which was refreshing with some spice. It's about 3 o'clock and this place caught our eye as we were running errands. I looked here for some reviews and de died to give it a shot. We don't plan on returning. Definitely modern feel. Great for photo ops if that's your thing. Looks great for a date night. Only 1 other table and one person @ bar. Table had specs of rice on it. I ordered a Prickly Pearloma which tasted nothing like any of the ingredients but did smell nice since it had a dried rose, I believe in the top. No pear, agave or ginger beer taste. Def couldn't taste the agave at all. Quite disappointing. Granted our waitress was also the person "making" the drinks. Poor lady definitely had no idea what she was doing although she was pretty nice. She touched all over our silver ware and straws that she brought from the bar. They had no sweetener for iced tea, offered simple syrup. Apps: Mushroom & black angus soup Dumplings are really good but 2 of the 4 fell apart before I could enjoy all the soup. That has never happened to me before and I was so disappointed bc they were actually really delish. Main- Mopa tofu was delivered before the other entree and with no rice. About 5 minutes later waitress came to check on us and took the tofu back. My dish apparently just circled around bc less than a minute later another person came out with my husbands meal. Black angus filet mignon and one rice. Had to remind them we had 2. My tofu was almost too spicy too eat and I didn't find any meat in it. I had 3 pieces of his steak and although flavored nicely, 2 of the 3 were chewy. The veggies were undercooked as well. I love Asian food and was disappointed. They have many kinks to work out. Our waitress although sweet had no idea about the menu and as other people came to the bar it was obvious she was clueless about the food in general and the menu. We dropped in after the movie at the Cinemark for a quick bite for dinner. The only thing we had actually was the whole fried fish. I would like to say this was probably the best iteration of this dish we have had in Dallas, including the one that's made at NOBU. We also had some vegetarian, hot and sour soup that had a wonderful umami and a good taste of mushroom. This is a brand new restaurant run by Sonny, a New Yorker who wanted to bring a classy Chinese restaurant to the Plano area. I think he has succeeded. They are one of the few restaurants that I know of in Dallas that serves a whole Peking duck carved tableside and it's priced reasonably if you call $125 reasonable. You do need to call in advance to reserve one and I was told that there are times when you can actually get half a duck . We look forward to trying this when we return very soon. read more

We had a late lunch to celebrate our friends birthday. Food was bomb! We ordered the peking duck ahead of time, you have to rsvp the duck to make sure they have one for you. The duck came with two plates full of meat. You have the option of turning the duck bone into soup or salt and pepper or Szechuan dish. We opted for salt and pepper and so glad we did, it was crispy and there were a lot of meat on the bones. We also order lu lu prawns aka honey walnut shrimp without the walnuts. I think the dish would be a lot better with candied walnuts and kept it traditionally but I understand people have nut allergies. That was so good. We also had the crispy gyoza. Must get all of it! everything was delicious. The only complaint I have is there seems to be a disconnect in the kitchen, chef forgot our rice and so we had to ask for it. We also ordered the general tsos chicken and that was great as well. Stayed very crispy and it was flavorful. Came here for the first time on a Sunday afternoon. The place has a nice vibe and is really cute. I even complimented the host on it when I walked in, but she didn't respond or make eye contact. The waitress asked if I had been there before and then gave a monotone introduction about how the restaurant is upscale, high-end, and that everything is made fresh in-house daily. It came off a little pretentious. Usually, you can tell when a place is high-end without having to be told. I wasn't sure what I wanted right away, so I asked for a little more time. It looked like she was the only waitress working, and she didn't come back until after helping four other tables. I ordered the General Li Tsao shrimp. The sauce was too sweet for me and had soaked into the batter, so I ended up scraping it off just to eat the shrimp. The tofu and beef soup was okay. Service unfortunately didn't improve. I was glad I brought a water bottle because no one checked on me again. When I needed soy sauce, I had to ask the hostess, and I also had to ask her for the check. Maybe it was just an off day, but the whole place felt low-energy, almost like everyone was hungover. They didn't even turn the music on until I was halfway through my meal. The whole duck is $108 and for $10 extra you can do the three course duck. It'll come with your traditional Peking duck and fixings plus your choice of two out of three different duck dishes; 1. The duck soup 2. Salt and pepper duck 3. Spicy fried duck. We chose the soup and the salt and pepper duck. The salt and pepper duck was so flavorful but harder to eat trying to get the good bites. And the soup was amazing, the broth so delicious! My husband and I should've stopped with the duck because it was super filling, but what's the fun in that. We ordered the wagyu soup dumplings; which were tasty. The vinegar sauce they usually bring out with soup dumplings was a sweet. Wasn't loving that but it wasn't bad. The lettuce wraps were very tasty, I would've liked more pieces of water chestnuts; but the portions were hefty and you actually got a lot of chicken. The kimchi and cheese fried rice was my husband's pick and to my surprise it was quite delicious. It was more gochujang based vs kimchi, but honestly I like that better. You got a nice sweet spicy vs a traditional kimchi fried rice with a fermented sour taste. We also got the short rib, it was cooked perfectly and the sauce had a nice flavor, cumin I believe. Our waitress was amazing, the manager was super helpful the whole night, the presentation of the flaming duck was fun and all the food we ordered was great. Definitely a fun experience. The interior of this place is cool, I wasn't a fan of the QR code menu, but that's just my preference. read more

Joining Lulu at their soft opening was a great choice for the night. The setting here looks chic and elegant with lively music playing in the background. We sat at the bar and opted for a couple of their signature drinks. The King Fu Panda and Prickly Pearloma. Thankful for it not to be overly sweet. It was enjoyable to sip on while just vibing and getting a real feel of the place. We watched dishes, plate by plate came out of the kitchen. Every plate honors authentic Chinese flavors. Bold, balanced, and soulful, yet each presentation is a modern art piece . The red snapper really caught our eye and would love to try that on our next visit. This is definitely not your mom and pop Chinese shop. Dim lighting, sleek decor, and curated music complete the ambiance, creating an elevated dining experience where tradition and innovation share the same table.
