Just moved to Colorado from Texas this last summer. It has been very difficult to find barbecue that compares to the Texas barbecue that I'm used to. I have tried several barbecue joints in and around the Denver area. I have had good barbecue, but nothing that makes me want to go back. I tried Lulu's for the first time last week. I always try and get a three meat combo so that I can sample some of my favorites. I had the ribs, burnt ends, and brisket. All three of these meats were excellent and came very close to competing with some of my favorite barbecue places in Texas. After trying at least a dozen joints, I think I have found a place that I will definitely crave and go back to. Good job Lulu's! read more

Lulus used to be great. Now the prices are higher and the portions and flavor are lower! Service was bad. They're letting too many people in the restaurant on Friday's. The food was fair. Both of us ordered the pulled pork sandwich which was really good, but the sides were either too peppery (mashed potatoes), too spicy (baked beans), or bland (coleslaw). So minus one star for the food. The biggest disappointment was the beer and margarita we ordered. The beer was a 12oz can for $4.50. I expected a draft pint for that. And the margarita was served in the smallest mason jar I've ever seen and it cost $4.00 during happy hour. It's normally $5.00. Update: So someone sent me a message saying that the margarita was made top shelf style and was in a 8oz jar. If both are true, I can see that the pricing might be on par with other places. That someone also said the $4.50 12oz CAN of beer was also a good price. This makes me laugh. I've been to many of the local breweries and get a PINT of Colorado beer for around $4.00. I ask the question, what would a PINT of beer cost at Lulu's pricing? Lulu's sells beer at $4.00 per 12oz can. That's $0.33 per ounce. Multiple that by 16 yields $5.33 per pint. That is higher than other places. If Lulu's served pint glasses of beer on tap, I'd would have been happy. Or if it had have been $3.50 for the can of beer, I would have been happy too. However, as it stands, I find the beer a bad deal. My three stars stands. read more

Our experience at lunch today may be atypical based on the other reviews here. We enjoyed the auto garage theme (site is a former gas station) and they effectively incorporated into everything from the door handles to the server uniforms. Quite a contrast with psuedo-movie theater theme of the nearby Rex, which is very ordinary with only an external marquee and row of lame movie posters to highlight its history as Louisville's downtown theater. Lulu's staff was friendly and prompt, though the server didn't check on us again after the food arrived, not even for drink refills. The menu is mercifully short, but with a good selection of sides. We enjoyed the slaw, beans and fried okra. The only low note was the pulled pork. Rather than being juicy, it was very greasey, with many chunks of unrendered fat, gristle and cartilage. The smoke flavor was just barely detectable. It had all the characteristics of insufficient cooking time. Not even close to the best bbq I've had. As this is quite different than the other reviews here, we will chalk it up to an off day, and give them a second chance. read more

What a DISAPPOINTMENT! Service was good but the food and mixed drinks were such a let down. I LOVE downtown L'ville and was really looking forward to trying Lulu's, but this was barely edible. Plus, the drink was not good. The metal chairs were cold and a torture to sit on. We had 1 entree, an app and a cup of chili and it came to over 50 bucks. Not including tip. Lulu's BBQ (and its parent bar, Waterloo) is a little slice of Austin, Texas right here in Louisville, Colorado. Who woulda thunk it? How my favorite 2nd city inspired this little BBQ joint is beyond me - but I'm glad it did! Nobody in the area can beat their meat (or their slogan). Combo plates allow you to sample each and every protein, and their sides are the bomb! To complement the sweet sticky sauce, they have assembled some pretty sweet servers (kind on the eyes, they is). I recommend sitting at the bar if permitted, where you can get into an impromptu conversation with one of the locals about topics you love. Louisvillans are cool people. And downtown Louisville is such a lovely town. The local "tapover" Lulu's features is a tremendous offering - some of the best beers from the local brewhounds are on tap, and rotate throughout the year. Lulu's offers several food and drink specials daily, including $4 Margaritas all day on Saturday. Woot! Woot! If you want to tonk with your honky, I recommend dropping in any day of the week... Lulu's has captured my heart and my taste buds. I'm so happy they are right around the corner from work. That's a dangerous proposition - Texas-style BBQ 5 days a week. Be still my heart! Recommendation: Start with the brisket, sweet potato tots, cowboy beans, cole slaw, and cornbread. Punish yourself with their Spicy BBQ sauce. Went back to try ribs, after calling to make sure that they had some and my experience was much better than the first time. The place was very crowded (which is usually a good sign). I had the 1/2 rack of ribs, which were tender and meaty. The sides of mac and cheese and green bean casserole were average. My friend (who is visually impaired), my rat terrier, Chase, and I were driving back from CO to KS last weekend...we were visiting my family! I swear! Now, my dawg Chase, he was a whimpering fool; I suspect he was sad about that relentless pull our flat-chested, Bermuda-esque Rectangle that we know as home had on us...I digress.... Before Lulu's review, let me give a side review on a truck stop cafe in Newton, KS, called "Charlie's" There, we had a pretty decent chicken salad, (BIG PLATE) and the place was very clean, w/lots of customers, and above all, a superb staff. Not only did they welcome my dog into their establishment when it was dangerously hot outside, they were even willing to have my dog hang out with them on the store side, which Chase had none of, because he busted out and found me on the restaurant side. No one kicked us out, thank goodness! 5 stars! Fun fact: There was a dog bar by the name of "Sadies" in Newton. A place to drink with your only real friend: your dog. Newton loves their dogs! Yay Newton! Back to Lulu's... Chase and Jonas (remember the blind guy?) stayed in the car's AC while I checked Lulu's out. I found Lulu's to be a clean-looking, country-themed BBQ joint with a nice bar, friendly (and might I add, attractive) wait staff. Blessedly sparse of patrons, (Sunday at 4PM. Go figure). When I walked in, a friendly waitress greeted me, and I her. My first question was if I could bring my dog in. She went off to confer with the owner, only to come back with a "no" due to policy etc., etc. Obviously now is the right time to blurt something out about my blind friend, eh? Eh? and her, either getting it or not says, "We can't turn away a service dog" and left it at that. Chase CLEARLY is not a service dog but I decided to take the risk. I suck. I know. Rules are NOT made to be broken, seriously, folks, I know. It was a poor judgment call on my part. We order the grilled chicken sandwich, side salads, and a couple beers. As to the food, the chicken sandwich had great flavors, really good, but the texture of the ridiculously small, grilled chicken was rubbery, and let me reiterate how small chicken breast portion was: I had over 1/3 of my sandwich bread left with nothing to sandwich. I mean, at least halve the little chicken so he could take up the bread's real estate...but maybe that would make the chicken briny-sando-meat-like? I'd take that as an alternative, especially since the flavoring of the chicken was so good. The side salad was pretty fresh, only had one or two wilted pieces, but was a pain in the ass to eat as it was piled high and deep on a little saucer. Seriously, I was eating that salad like a game of Jenga! Worst still, was watching Jonas work on his salad. No, I did not request him a bigger plate because he's not an infant and if he wanted one he would have requested one. Beer was on tap, nothing special. Long story shortened, our meal was done, Jonas was in the men's room, owner took notice of me. I walked towards the men's room, owner walked towards me. Paths meet, I see Jonas and go to "help him." He said something to me about the dog, I tried to excuse myself to get ahold of Jonas so he didn't trip on anything (he wouldn't have, I was trying to avoid confrontation) but the owner persisted and I got defensive when he asked me if my dog was a service animal--Of course I had to keep lying because that's what idiots do, so I said, "yes", and he said, "Where's his service vest?" and I was like, "He doesn't always wear it." and just then, I got even more defensive cause I was called out on my bullshit. Naturally, I told him I'd write a Yelp review, being sure to include how he harassed his visually impaired customer and their service animal. Blah, blah, blah, blah, puke! I disgust myself, trust me. (Better not). I knew I was never gonna write this review, but here I am surprising myself..and if the owner ever reads this, perhaps he'll be surprised, too. Before I continue, let me say this: I owe you, your establishment, and especially the waitress an apology. Rules aren't made to be broken. Next road trip, either I'll leave the dog home with a sitter, or go through a drive-thru, park in the shade, and just suck it up and do the right thing. I guess we went at the wrong time!!!! I got a rack of ribs..they tasted like they had been Under Smoked and Over re-heated!! The outside of the ribs were totally dried out and tough, leaving only small morsels of half dried meat and had no smoke flavor. The mac & cheese was grainy and did not really taste much like cheese I had to add a fair amount salt for it to have any taste.The slaw was ok. My wife got sliders..a sliced beef and two pulled pork. Both were lacking in the smoke flavor we expected. Both meats were dry and only by using a lot of bbq sauce were we able to eat them. Her one side the bbq beans...just plain bad! it was more like a bad bbq bean soup. They had a burnt flavor for an after taste. Had we not taken the food to go...I would have sent it all back and just payed the bill for our drinks!!! For you folks out there that thinks this is good bbq. Please look around the area!! Great location and a casual atmosphere make this a perfect spot to have some pretty good barbecue in Louisville. Highlights include their chicken wings - a unique smoked rub makes these delicious as a meal or appetizer to share. The brisket nachos are also quite good and filling enough to share. The excellent reviews are not exaggerated... Lulu's BBQ is truly incredibly delicious! I really love the space - lots of fresh air, plenty of outside seating and space to hang out, clever decor, and an overall wonderful atmosphere. Their Bloody Marys are very tasty, spicy, and full of punch, just how I like it! I especially liked that they serve all of their drinks in mason jars! As mentioned previously, the food is really good - all meat falls of the bone, brisket is soft as butter, all of the sides are worth trying - EVERYTHING is freshly made, and it shows! A suggestion I would make is to put all of the sides in cups or bowls. Since the accompanying sides came on the same plate as the ribs, the ribs ended up covered in cheesy sauce/potato salad/casserole dressing, which is ok... but not preferred. Pretty good BBQ at a very good price. I normally stay away from BBQ since no one can do as well as Texas or St. Louis, but some coworkers chose this place. They menu is small as it should be, and they have all the usual meats you would expect. I decided on the burnt ends since I was in a BBQ sauce mood today. They were better than expected out of this little place. For burnt ends they were juicy and the only negative is they lacked the smoky flavor I love. The sauces made up for this slight lack. For my sides I got sweet potato tots and the fried pickles. The fried pickles are some of the best I've had, and the tots weren't my favorite. They could use a little more "fried" factor in my mind. Overall, everyone in my group seemed to enjoy the food. In the back part they also have cornhole you can play while you wait for your food. If I'm in the area I would definitely consider going here again! read more
