We just had a very unimpressive experience at Lulu's. They have toys but beyond that they (or at least the woman who cut my 4yo son's hair) don't seem to be interested in accommodating kids. She made no effort to put him at ease. She just kept brusquely telling him to put his head down, or to the side, sit still, etc. At one point she said under her breath "this isn't going well." I wanted to say "that's your fault!" The next kid, whose cut started as we were paying, seemed just as miserable. Every previous place we've had my son's hair cut was much more willing to put kids at ease. We definitely won't be back. read more

We've been coming here for 4 years and have been very happy. Nice atmosphere and pleasant interactions along with good haircuts for my kid.

Worth every penny! We have tried 3 other places, but they don't do nearly as nice a cut, or have as nice of an atmosphere. We go to Dolores for my 3-year old son. She is like a child-whisperer, it's amazing! The studio is very relaxing, with nice music (NOT "kiddie music" thank goodness) and lots of toys for the kids to enjoy. My son is like putty in her hands, it's amazing - and he gets the cutest cuts there too! We didn't use this, but apparently there's an additional area for kids with sensory issues to get their hair cut - I don't know the details, except that Dolores was down there with a family when I arrived last time. Another nice thing is that there's fun playgrounds in the area (Rev. Williams Park is particularly close) and Verna's donut shop - so if you want to have a nice morning with your kids after the haircut, it's a great neighborhood for that! read more

ETA, on 6/18/2013: After another disappointing haircut somewhere else, I finally decided to risk it and cut his hair myself. I've now done it twice and have liked the results better each of those times than I have with most "professional" haircuts he's had. So, no more paid haircuts for my son for a while, I hope! :-) ***** I'm updating my review. We went back for the third time a month ago, and had a disappointing experience. I dislike posting "meh" reviews, but the reality is... meh. And meh enough that it seems like posting an update makes sense (even though my original review was filtered). We'll look around for other options for next time before immediately rushing back as we have done so far. The basic story of what happened is this: We booked an appointment for a Saturday because it was what they had available and what we could make at the time. We busted our butts to get there on time (getting a 2 year old to do what the adult wants... good luck! :) ), and we did. We arrived to find that the stylist who we'd been booked with was mid-cut on a young girl. The stylist we've had in the past was just finishing someone else up and her next client had come in. It was clear that our stylist wasn't going to be ready any time soon, so the other stylist waved our son to come on up. He wasn't quiet ready... he was mid-toy, and didn't want to stop his playing on the floor. That and other factors led him to be fussier than he'd been in the past, and so he refused a cape, sat on daddy's lap instead of on the booster, and in general struggled with most aspects of the cut.. In retrospect, I wish that she had suggested that we come back at a different time when they weren't quite so busy and perhaps he might have been in a better space about the thing. Instead, she rushed the job, because more people were coming in for their appointments the whole time. The result was pretty clearly sloppy... shorter on one side, clear "cut lines" in various places, not smoothed out. It's not growing out nearly as well as previous cuts did, and I feel disappointed whenever I see the spots that just don't look very good. I think next time, wherever we go, we'll be sure to go on a less busy day, and we'll be more upfront about making sure that everyone is in a good space before anyone starts cutting! read more

We took our 18 month old son here since there are not many salons for children in Cambridge. She did a nice job but $25 for 15 minutes is expensive. I thought she was doing me a favor by offering to cut my wife's hair as well while we were there. Another 15 minutes later, she charged $65 for her cut. We will NOT be going back! read more

Dolores was great! Very relaxing atmosphere and plenty of toys to play with. My 3 yo was playing with little toys while Dolores was cutting his curls. She was very gentle and highly professional. We will be coming back for more:) read more

I'm someone who always complains about my bad hair, and I'm an old, old man; so it's a long running complaint. Since I've found Lulu's I've had to find other things to complain about; George Bush mostly, but not my hair. And my 10 year old daughter who has been getting her hair cut here for the last 5 years won't go anywhere else; ever. Kudos to all the staff at Lulu's. read more

Not a great experience. I usually take my two year old to snip it's. I felt the hair cut here was very bland, almost a straight line in front. It was also very pricey! And cash/check only- which I did not have so I had to pay to go to the ATM. As if all that was not enough, the woman was not very friendly and got hair ALL over my son. This has never happened in all his cuts at snip it's. My son was very upset to be covered in hair. I am very surprised this is a "kid friendly" place. Don't think we would go back. read more

There are no TVs or fancy seats, but this salon is great for children. There are toys and books to keep the little ones occupied while waiting. It is quiet and cheerful, just what you need to calm your child before getting a first haircut. Your child is the focus of the stylist's full attention. She has a "magic box" of small toys to keep your child happy during the haircut and even a sticker or two at the end for a job well done. Highly recommended! read more

Took my 3 yr old daughter for a hair cut. Don't know if it was because it was the last appointment of the day, or if the hair stylist was in a bad mood (I didn't catch her name), but she just gave her a haircut that involved cutting hair off in a straight line. No attempts to do anything special. She was unpleasant to deal with. This was my second visit in spite of it being a pricey place, because the first time around was a great cut. I figure I can go anywhere for a kiddie cut, if the quality is going to be inconsistent like this. Won't be returning. read more

The stylist had a few snips of hair cut in a straight line and the whole event took less than 10 minutes. Second, they were very unfriendly. I almost felt like I was doing something horrible to them by making them cut my kid's hair. Third, despite being a kid-friendly salon, they were very unfriendly to the kid. We are not even talking about going extra miles to make the kids happy. They seem very unpleased to see the kid, and even though our kid was very calm and made no fuss, she gave an attitude and a sigh every time the kid moved even an inch. Lastly, they do not accept credit cards. Overall, it was a very very unpleasant experience and we are never going back. read more

Just ask for Dolores. I read the previous reviews, and if you are a mother like me who is mortified by commercial haircutting places for kids that give them sensory overload, this place is simple, sweet and to the point. Not much in the way of chit-chat-- you'll be in and out in 15 min, your feisty kid will be distracted, and yes, it's $25 plus tip, but if time is money, then it evens out, in my opinion. Have been bringing my kids here since their first haircuts, and if you ask for what you want, you will get it. I recommend this place to everyone because she knows what she's doing, and I appreciate that! read more

Really disappointed in this place. It is right on our walk to/from preschool and looked charming. But when I took my 2.5 year old for her first appointment this afternoon, things did not go well. They have some well-used toys for children to play with, but my daughter was clearly a bit scared (new place) and the woman who was to cut her hair did absolutely nothing to try to make her feel more comfortable. Now, I am the mom and, of course, it is my job to reason with my toddler. But honestly, this woman's manner was so cold and disinterested that I wouldn't have let her near me either. Based on this experience, I am shocked that this place caters to children. And I am shocked that the stylist we met works with the public at all. read more

I took my daughter to Lulu for her first haircut this week. I wasn't sure how she would behave but she did really well. They gave her a box of toys that kept her entertained during the session. They also have books and toys to keep the kids distracted. The lady gave me tips on how to keep her curly hair and she told me to come back for free within two weeks if we need to repair it. She was professional and made my daughter comfortable. The cut looked very good. The only con is that $25 for a 15-min haircut is pricey. I'd come back though. read more

Dolores was quick, no nonsense, efficient, and my 2yo son got the straightforward cut he needed. Hard to expect fashionable styling in a toddler haircut but he came out happy, comfortable, with an acceptable cut. Bangs were a tad short but they will grow to the "just right" length soon enough. Point is that while I cannot speak to the other stylists/barbers who work there, Dolores is self-assured, calm, and works well with kids. Worth the price not to save time, not have my son traumatized, and to leave with confidence that he got a decent cut. read more

Sent my husband here (on advice from a mom's list serve) as our long time stylist has moved out of state. Dolores did NOT do a great job and more importantly just plain doesn't listen. You will get a cookie cutter serviceman type haircut(short on the sides, long on the top) no matter what. Maybe because she is old and set in her ways or maybe because the majority Of her clientele is children but she is a wham bam thank ya ma'am kind of woman whose focus is functionality not style. read more

Went here today with my two year old. Dolores was really good with her and did a great job with the cut especially considering my daughter was wiggling/fussing the whole time! Only reason I didn't give it five stars was the price but it's worth it for the nice toys she has/cozy atmosphere and quality cut. I'll definitely go back. read more

Not thrilled... I brought my 7month old baby there and Dolores took care of us. She was definitely fast and used to take care of kids, but she did just an OK job and wasn't the most pleasant person. Was hoping for a better experience for a place that is knowed for kids haircut. I will probably try other places next time. read more

The reason why I'm giving 2 stars because the price is extremely high for my girls hair cuts. One got a hair cut and my other daughter got a bang trim. It ended up being 60 dollars for both girls. My girls got haircuts about a month and a half ago and I paid 50. The stylist did do a good job cutting my girls hair. I thought the price was a high for my 2 year old girls. We went to Lulu's for my son's first haircut when he was 20 months old. Delores cut his hair. Although the salon bills itself as kid-friendly (there are toys in the waiting area), the entire staff was incredibly cold, dismissive, impatient, and unhelpful. My son was apprehensive about getting his haircut, but Delores showed no care. She did not attempt to talk to him before the cut or try to keep him calm. As he cried (and as we tried to keep him comfort him), she kept jerking his head and telling him to "stop." It was incredibly inappropriate and a plainly awful experience. After the cut, Delores and the rest of the staff, simply stared at us and shook their heads as though we were "bad parents" because our son was upset. I would never go back to this salon, and I caution other parents and caregivers against going here. Terrible experience all around. read more

I agree with the other reviewer that this may not be the place for toddlers; despite the name, there were women getting their hair cut and colored there and the only children in the place seemed to be attached to one of the other stylists. not much in the way of childlike ambience (colors, toys, etc) but who needs a tv there? don't kids get enough of that? I was very happy with my daughter's haircut (she's 5 1/2) and Theresa made her feel comfortable and chatted with her the whole time. They also have good booster seats, plastic clothing covers, kids barrettes, etc. I'll definitely return. read more

This place has a great reputation for kids' cuts and I can understand the appeal: they have toys out, the hairdressers are friendly, they are speedy and the kids get stickers when they're done. My big complaint is they give the same haircut every time. For girls, it's a slightly angled bob. I know I should have known better than to take my very curly haired girl here, but I was disappointed that they didn't do anything to try and work with her hair texture. read more

Kristen cut my hair for 4+ years at Floyd's outside of Harvard Square. Consistently the best haircut I've ever had. I would follow her to the ends of the Earth. Fortunately, she moved only a mile or so down Mass Ave to Lulu's. I'm a big fan of Lulu's chill atmosphere and family-friendly vibe. read more

Took our 16 month-old son here for a cut upon referral from others. This was our son's second cut, having received his first at the kid-specific Snippits in Burlington. Shame on us for not inquiring about the pricing ahead of time....$25 for a cut for a 16-month old that took less than 15 minutes is RIDICULOUS! The cut itself is decent, probably better than Snippits, but the stylist's demeanor was not overly friendly nor engaging. We will not be going back nor would we recommend this place. read more

Fantastic experience with Melissa at Lulu's today. She gave my 5yo daughter an amazing cut, but more than that, she took the time to sit down with her and involve her in the process. She brought out a magazine and asked us what we were thinking of in terms of a cut. She was very generous with her time, and precise with the cut. I'd highly recommend her. I've been taking my both my kids to this salon for over 2 years. Dolores is an experienced stylist who is easy to work with and more importantly for little kids, she cuts fast. I've been to other salons but have never been as happy with the end products or the process. My son is so distracted by looking out onto Mass Ave. and seeing big trucks and buses drive by that a TV or other entertainment is not necessary. read more

My 18-month-old got his first "real" haircut from Dolores at Lulu's/Salon 2323, and we were both really happy with the experience. The place is not tricked out like a carnival, but there were plenty of age-appropriate toys to keep him occupied while we waited, and a box of little toys and animals with which Dolores swiftly distracted him when he got nervous at first in the chair. She actually managed to give him a real haircut while he squirmed and looked around, and checked with me as she went about the length and style. This place is great! I brought my daughter here for her 1st haircut when she was a year and a half. The stylist recommended a cute cut - I took her advice and was so happy with the result. She looked adorable. And it's grown-in remarkably well. My daughter is now 3 and I can't believe how nice it still looks. We'll definitely be going back. read more
