We stopped for lunch on our way back from Asheville. We had been there several times before, mostly at dinner time. We both had a hamburger and it was absolutely the best I have ever had. Tried Lulu's for a late lunch on a drizzly Monday. There were only a couple of other customers so this was clearly not the same ambiance as you might experience on a weekend night. Our server was very attentive; kept our tea and water full and helpful with the menu. We really enjoyed our lunch. I had a delicious French Dip (beef); wife had lightly battered cod tacos; teen daughter had a Thai-inspired noodle bowl with chicken. The warm humus app was very good. Potential exists so 2 stars. Nice space, great eclectic decor. Food: mushroom appetizer delish, highly recommend. Thai chicken soup was good but noodles were very over done, almost disintegrated, and the broth was very thick, not like the typical coconut based broth. I wouldn't order again. 2 friends got the snapper, lovely presentation and the potatoes and green beans were solid, but the snapper was so overcooked it was barely edible. It was literally like cutting through a tough piece of pork chop and the skin was burnt and rubbery. My friend commented it was the worst piece of fish he'd ever choked down. We would have sent the two snapper entrees back but our server was not having a great night. We nicely reminded her about bread we ordered after about 20 min wait (appetizer had already been devoured) and her demeanor changed from pleasant to angry in an instant. When she presented the bread she literally tossed it on top of the appetizer glass plate and turned and left. The four of us were stunned. Hence, we didn't dare complain about the snapper later in the meal. The remainder of the meal our server was curt and not pleasant to deal with. It was not particularly busy so we really didn't understand the treatment. I probably wouldn't try it again given the snapper preparation and the poor treatment by the server. read more

This is a pretty good place to grab lunch or dinner with friends or a date! It's got a good menu and the service for the past two times have been well. I have ate the Thai noodles they have both times I've been and both times delicious! I don't have a single negative thing to say about my first visit here, stopped in during lunch. Great service and friendly staff, which is a necessity for an enjoyable dining experience. There were plenty of options on the menu (even with significant dietary restrictions) and a decent local beer menu. I used to love Lulu's. The food was good and the service was nice, but this last time I visited was a different story. We came around dinner time (I had never had the dinner menu before this). We started off with the mozzarella appetizer, which was good, but nothing fantastic. My friend and I both had the Scampi Pasta (mine with shrimp and hers with chicken) for dinner and we both reached the same conclusion...it was BLAND. It didn't really taste like much of anything. The sauce just tasted like butter (it was a white wine garlic butter sauce but it didn't even smell garlicky) and there was no seasoning. Not even salt! I don't know if the chef doesn't use salt or they ran out or what, but it was a boring dish. The shrimp was cooked well and tasted great but that was the only saving grace for that dish. Don't get me wrong, the lunch menu is wonderful! The Shroomwich is a must have! Just don't expect much flavor if you're there at dinner time. On a good note, our waitress was great! read more

I've been here a few times over the past year. The food is usually very good. I had the duck this visit and it was excellent quality. Nicely cooked with little seasoning that allowed the natural flavor to come through. Sides of rice and broccoli were bland. Others at my table had a special compromised of scallops and shrimp over angel hair pasta. They were pleased with it. My main reason I don't give the restaurant a four star rating is the service. The staff seems to be in no rush and indeed not overly concerned about anything related to the food or needs of the patrons. My friends commented a few times during the meal about not seeing our waiter for awhile and one was angry that it took nearly 30 minutes to get glasses of wine. read more

I haven't dined here since a few years back, apparently there has been a change of ownership or something of the sort. We came for dinner last weekend as I was craving my Greek Chicken and Spaghetti favorite that we just never had time for in previous visits. I was so surprised to see a new menu with only some of the items from the previous menu, and most importantly not my Greek Chicken! I opted for the Italian Pasta Salad because I was still in shock. Ha ha. That was a favorite from the menu before as well as the Pasta ala greque, I topped it with some grilled tofu. My husband had the special, which was a 12 oz ribeye with garlic mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. We also decided to try the appetizer on special, fried green tomatoes with lump crab meat on top. I tell you - that was my favorite part of the meal. If I had ordered only that, with a house salad with szechuan dressing and a side of bread (I LOVE their bread) I would have been satisfied. Not much you can do with tofu, but I think if it was seasoned a little bit and then thrown on the grill, it would have made my dish better. The pasta was cooked perfectly, the lemon oil really makes the dish, so be sure to mix it all up before you dive in, it settles at the bottom. There was an over abundance of red onions, so I might put those on the side next time. My husband enjoyed his steak, but also said that it wasn't worth the price, we've had better. The garlic mashed potatoes were creamy and flavored well, the asparagus were a little tough and overly charred. Our service was slow. It seems like the waitress had several tables she was trying to keep up with inside and out. It took a while to get refills on water, a box for our food and then we sat a good 15 minutes just waiting on the check. Hoping to have a better experience next time and fingers crossed for my Greek Chicken to be on special! read more

We were heading back east after some time at Lake Chatuge and had heard that Sylva was a cute town so we decided to stop for lunch. After consulting with Yelp, we decided to go to Guadalupe's, but alas, they were closed for lunch, so we stopped in at Lulu's. Lucky for us, they had a great seat outside on the patio where we could bring our big dog Sadie to sit next to us. The service was really friendly and good, and even brought a bowl of water for the dog. They had a wide variety of food; salads, sandwiches, entrees. One of us really enjoyed our meal and the other thought it was "fine". I had a salad that was very fresh but sort of lacked personality. Perhaps I didn't order well, but I have high standards. Bottom line: for that area I think it's a safe place to bring the parents or grandparents without it being too upscale, weird or trendy. read more

Lulu's has been around Sylva for a long time--before any other good places opened and when Sylva still looked more like the place from Deliverance, than the relatively cool, quaint town it is now. They deserve some credit for providing good food for a long time and if you're in town visiting, I recommend giving them a chance. You'll have a good meal and the atmosphere is very pleasant. If you're a local, however, it can get a little old. They rarely (if ever?) change their menu and even the specials seem to be repeated fairly often. If they'd do a little more menu rotation, but kept the same quality, I'd give them four stars. read more

I wouldn't give this place the satisfaction of a single star. My family and I enjoy traveling into historical towns and love to dine and support local family owned restaurants. We thought we would give this place a try. We we're greeted with the worst service. We waited 40 minutes to be acknowledged. The restaurant had a "few" tables ... definitely not busy. We asked for the manager and that went nowhere. We gave our server several opportunities to make up for the lack of hospitality. There was no communication as to why our meal was taking so long. Our salads finally arrived after repeatedly asking for our server and manager. When the salads finally came out they were wrong. The server looked at us like we were crazy. At this point we had enough. I got up to personally walk over to the manager to see if he can tell us what was going on and ask if he could help us...he said he was on the phone and never came by. What a fun little establishment. Delicious food-- with generous portions-- made for the ideal lunch-time stop before heading out to Asheville for the afternoon. I got a tasty Asian Noodle Salad (with tempeh and a wasabi-soy dressing) while my dear friend Miles tried the Pork Chop sandwich--and had to ask for extra mango-chutney, as it was too good and Miles could not get enough. Not too expensive and fun to sit outside on the patio. I gave it 4 stars because I wish our waitress didn't seem so frantic the whole time! She sort of stressed me out. My friend had been there once before and mentioned to me the same waitress couldn't be bothered to explain to him what tempeh was. Aside from this, delish! And really casual. Always a nice place to visit any night of the week, Lulu's is a favorite spot of ours to chow down at. Being vegan in Sylva isn't the easiest thing in the world, unless you want to cook almost every night. So it's nice to drop in at Lulu's to have a wonderful meal, complete with vegan dessert specials they offer. Perhaps the best restaurant in town if you're looking for something a bit off-beat, Lulu's offers great choices at prices you wont break the bank with. I haven't had a bad meal here yet. read more

By far the best Thai curry chIcken noodle soup I have ever consumed. So fresh and tasty and such a surprise to find here in a little mountain town. I got the stuffed steak special with mashed potatoes and green beans. We also got the bacon wrapped gulf shrimp app for the table. This place is downright great. The service was a little edgy, but I think they were stressed because they close early (like 9 o'clock), there were a lot of people there, and probably not enough staff. Anyways, the food was outstanding. I am usually not shy about eating a steak rather quickly, but I took my time on this. Was it the best steak I have ever had? No, but it had great flavor and was totally unexpected from a place like this in the middle of nowhere. The side dishes were great. I'm usually not a fan of super fresh green beans, and these were awesome. The bacon wrapped gulf shrimp we basically deep fried bacon with a hint of shrimp. So good though.
