Today (early evening) I took my wife (Susan 66) and her mother (June-90) to Lum-Yuen because June remembered she liked the Pork Noodles in years past, prior to going to the retirement home where she now lives. Susan hesitated ordering anything different because she had read the previous Yelp reviews...but I had to prove the reviews wrong...so I ordered the appetizer plate to start...it arrived in (2) minutes...and was "almost" hot but the worst Chinese appetizers I ever had...I ordered combination plate #9 which I found hardly edible...so I asked the waitress to please take the combo away and bring me the noodles the others had...the waitress did just that and with enough soy sauce the noodles had a flavor of sorts...but hardly as good as Top Ramon. Later the waitress asked why I switched and I just said It was awful...but I was polite and when the check came I paid and tipped well (as usual) but I was charged for everything (I didn't ask for it to be deducted etc.). I have been spoiled by the quality and cooking of Chinn's in So. Salem...where I have gone (in/out) for over (35) years....but I didn't expect it to be any better...or even as good...however, I never expected it to be that bad...especially for a restaurant that's been around for so many years. It has been many years since I felt relief leaving a restaurant...but I couldn't leave that place fast enough. I couldn't even look in my rear view mirror...but I sure was happy to leave there and I was compelled to stop for a Dairy Queen ice cream on the way home...just to get the taste of that very bad food off my palate. I have tasted food (good/bad) all over the world...this is the first time I ever felt compelled to volunteer a personal review. Go to Lum-Yuen if you like...but I will never be back...no matter how much my Mother-in-Law wants noodles. read more

This is one of my least favorite Chinese restaurants. When we arrived we were seated promptly. The waiter brought our tea, ice water and menus. We decided on what we would like and put our menus at the end of the table. We had to wait quite a few minutes before someone finally took our order. They brought our egg flower soup promptly. It was good. We hadn't even finished our soup and they brought our main dish. I had ordered shrimp and they brought the cocktail sauce with hot mustard. When I tasted it, it was very sweet and the hot mustard had no heat to it. I had also gotten sweet and sour pork. The pork was good but the sauce was very sweet. It was supposed to be sweet and sour. The almond chicken and the pork fried rice were good. My daughter got barbecued pork which was barely warm when she got it. She also felt the sweet and sour sauce was very sweet and syrupy instead of sweet and sour. After we got done eating the waitress brought us a box to put our leftovers in. Then she said she would be back to bring our cookies. So we waited about 10 minutes and she finally brought our bill and the stale cookies. The reason it took so long for her to get back to us was she had to replace food for another customer. He had a fruit fly in his food. read more

I have been eating at Lum Yuen's since they were a "hole in the wall" in the Hollywood district. When they moved to their site on Portland Road I was glad as it was easier to get to. Over the years I have frequently enjoyed their food but the past few visits the food seems to have gone downhill. We ordered takeout yesterday and it was not good at all. The fried rice with bean sprouts tasted slightly burnt other than that had no flavor. The Lum Yuen Appetizer Plate we ordered had broken won tons so we just had "pieces", the egg roll was extra done on the outside but mushy inside. And I'm not even going to mention the price I paid for this inedible food. We will think twice before going back to this restaurant to give them another chance. read more

It was ok food we didn't care for the fried rice and the bbq pork was cold when I asked them to fix it they went and put it in the microwave which made it dry. Now we have dry hot bbq pork. On a good note the broccoli and chicken was good with good flavor. read more

I came here in 2006 and loved it, it was our go to cheap date night as the food was soooo good. I have came here twice since i moved back two years ago and have been dissapointed as it has really changed and not for the better. The service is poor and the food is a huge dissapointment as well. The Main problem with this place is they short their to-go orders. When you call about the missing food, they put your name in a book of missing food along with your name for you to use at a later date. I ordered my dinner tonight 12/12/2015 and requested my missing food from the book and they had given it to someone else a month ago and not replace the food. So I received no food but they kept my money. read more

My Family and I love this restaurant - their seafood dishes are truly the freshest, most tastiest around. We've gotten takeout a few times, and also dined in (they seat our family of 4 very comfortably), and every time we go we are not disappointed. Wow, I am amazed at the variety of reviews here. My wife and I are here at least once a month. We even stopped here years ago on our first date (because we both already liked it). We have had several banquets here also. The service is always great. The BBQ pork is the best I have ever had anywhere. I never know what I will get until I look at the menu. Sometimes a combo, sometimes something else. The pork fried rice is probably the most boring item on the menu - but everything else is great. The soups are fantastic. The Lo Mein, Pressed Duck, Sweet & Sour (anything), Moo Goo Gai Pan, the Chow Yuk dishes, Beef Under Rainbow, the house Sizzling Platter, etc. are all good. My favorite dish, and I don't know why.... Special Fried Rice. We might live in the SE part of Salem, but we always head north to Lum Yuens when we are in the mood for Chinese food. read more

I've been a regular here for years. The service is always really friendly and (almost) always quick. You get a lot of food for your money. They are always willing to make changes or substitutions for you. The place is very roomy and they have a huge back room for parties. It's a great place to take groups. read more

I ordered Thursday evening and my food was not edible. Your vegetable fried rice contained absolutely no vegetables. The amount of shrimp in the fried shrimp was almost none. Sweet n sour chicken was more like pudding and what ever type of meat was in the beef dish was hard as a rock. So I call in and ask to speak with a manager. The only person available was Bella. She said that there was nothing she could do and to call back tomorrow "the manager would be there from 12-3. NOPE! I called and she wasn't available. I want a refund!!!! I will post a bad review of your food everyday until I get my money back. I will never return to your restaurant. And I will tell anyone I can how bad your service and food is. Oh and by the way all the food ended up in the trash.And if that's not bad enough I was ill all night. I forgot, event the foutune cookie was bad. The food is good, not great, but the service is typically lacking. I would have given them a 3, but my last visit made me not want to return. The server forgot some food and when my brother asked for it, she started arguing with him about what he ordered, even going so far as to interrupt him to tell him she brought him food that she did not in fact bring. I have been eating from Lum-Yuen since they were a little hole in the wall place. We used to have to wait for an hour or so outside until one of the 10 booths were empty. Then they moved to a building next to Davis Auto parts. Now they are housed in the old Pepper Tree. 43 yrs to be exact and I have found it to be the best I've ever eaten... My husband and I always wondered about this place, it seems to be packed on weekends. One adventurous afternoon after a few hours of touring goodwills we stopped in. I ordered a combination plate with egg foo young, fried rice, and kung pao chicken, he ordered general tso's and fried rice and egg roll, and both of us got egg drop. I would say thank god for the egg drop being okay because the rest of my food was horrible. The egg was like a burnt hockey buck and tasted like dirt, this was sad because it it one of my favorite dishes. The gravy wasn't very good either. The rice was bland and flavorless, and the spicy kung pao was not spicy at all. My husband's general tso's was almost too sweet to eat. Thank goodness our waitress erin was wonderful. I couldn't tell her how horrible it was since she has nothing to do with the food. We didn't eat it or take it with us, it had too much sugar for me to consider giving it to my dog even. This used to be the best place for chinese food in salem, But some how this place has gone down hill .. This last visit was one the worst ever i needed a high chair for my daughter they brought me a old style chair that looks like it should have been recalled it was dirty i ask the staff to clean it and was given a attatude by the server.. then she brought it back was oily and appered to be dusted off .. So i decied i would just do it i took off the cover to wipe it correctly and saw a nest like of old gathered food that had been the for weeks maybe months.. the bad this was that my sister in law did the same thing .. so you know is was not the only chair there nor was the placed packed .. this go to show how dirty they are! the floors need a good carpet cleaning the staff is a bunch of teenie booppers and there never seemed to be a manager on staff..the place is ery dark must be trying to hide the dirt.. the food is ok nothing to brag about reasonable prices but you never know whats in the kitchen(could be even dritier then dinning room) I will never eat here again nor would i reccommend it!!!! read more

My family and I ate at Lum-Yunes on Sat. it was the worst meal we have had, my dad had a very long hair wrapped around his meat and breading, I went to put my left over food in a take home box and discovered paper under the food, it was rather disgusting to say the least, when it was pointed out all we received was an I'm so sorry, nothing about a discount on the bill. This has always been one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Salem. We decided to call in a order and pick it up. Call and order is placed. Since were 20 minutes from the restaurant its best if we leave as soon as order is in. As we drive up to restaurant, the parking lot is empty and says closed. Flag down a worker in back and they tell us the restaurant decided to close early because of slow business. Ask about order we placed by phone, and if we can pick it up? They didn't seem to be concerned about the order. I totally understand a business closing up if business is slow, but first they should at least fulfill their phone orders first. Then not take any more. We never received a call letting us know they decided to close or that our order wouldn't be processed. Very poor service and business practice. They need to be sure they take care of their orders first. read more
