worked here a while ago and she treats employees terribly. she lies to clients constantly and pretends to be nice. There is a reason it seems like there is always a new front desk person and she has such a hard time finding "competent" help. She doesn't train front desk people and expects them to read her mind. She doesn't like when they are honest to clients about packages. She prefers packages to expire and then never tells the client even though she says they don't expire. Expects a mind reader. Lies and says she is sick when she isn't or doesn't want to see a client. Or blames the receptionist for her mistake. Have heard a lot of stories of "sensitive" receptionists because she makes them cry. She shouldn't be allowed to run a business I wouldn't trust her to do anything on me. read more

Lumena/Jen is great. I have never done any lasers/microneedling/chemical peels/etc. so I was nervous for my first laser experience. Jen knew I was nervous so she explained every step of the laser genesis process like what she was doing and why. Later that week I attended a wedding and people said my skin was "glowing" and "radiant." I came back and got a mix of IPL and Clear + Brilliant. Again, Jen did great. I wasn't too red afterwards and the next day my boyfriend commented that my skin looked more "youthful." In the future, I'd schedule the Lumena special where Jen customizes treatment based on your skin's needs. 10/10 recommend. Love, love, love Jen and Lumena. Almost don't want to review her place because it's already hard enough to get an appointment, but after everything she's done for my skin, it's the least I can do. I've had two signature treatments with her and my skin keeps getting better. Overall clarity, redness reduction, zapped capillaries/scars, anti-aging... Honestly, I wasn't sure about this place when after my first facial. I had gotten the Signature Facial with microneedling. Then the next time, I went in and got the clear and brilliant with the signature special. My skin was so clear and shiny that even my boyfriend who can't tell when I have red lipstick on noticed. After getting a facial here, I have so much confidence. I haven't worn foundation or coverup since then. Obsessed with Lumena and Jen. This is professional skincare for and from people who *know* skincare. No facial massages you can do at home with a jade roller. No scented candles. No instrumental spa music. No nonsense, no bullshit, but insanely effective. First time I went in (two years ago) Kait refused to treat me because I was honest about my (pretty harsh benzoyl and retinoil-heavy) routine. She gave me a quick micro, some moisturizing serum, refused to take my money, and told me to come back in 3 days. I did and have been back almost every month since. I am not exaggerating when I say the services are so good and so well-priced that you will consistently leave feeling like you know the best-kept beauty secret in New York. I have purchased every product they use- from the moisturizing mask to the pore extraction tool to the microdermabrasion machine. But I still go back because I never feel more polished than when I leave Jen after an hour of laser, micro and, let's face it, some light talk therapy. This place really is as good as it gets! I would give it 6 stars if I could. Here's 6 reasons why; 1. It was really easy to make my appointment using their online system. They sent me an email confirmation before my appointment. I called the lounge to confirm my appointment because it was New Years eve and I wanted to be sure they would be open. There was no answer but they called me back immediately to confirm. The number also receives text messages. I texted twice (I must've been an annoying customer :) and heard back immediately both times. A+ for being "easy to reach" 2. I added my sister to the appointment last minute without any problem. A+ for being accommodating 3. The lounge is in the Carroll Gardens/ Gowanas section of Brooklyn so it wasn't that hard to get to. There is street parking which can sometimes be tough to find in that area but I found a spot on the same street. This area also has a bunch of great lunch spots nearby so you can make a day of it. A+ for the great location! 4. The Beauty lounge itself was nicely decorated. Artsy but not cluttered. The space isn't huge but it was nice and I could tell that every piece of art was carefully selected. Even the bathroom was nicely decorated. It has this rustic, woodsy (if thats a word), antique feel to it which is nice in a spa. A+ for decor. 5. My sister and I got laser hair removal. I did some research prior to coming to this place to be sure that they had a machine that was good for black skin and corse hair. I have done laser hair removal in the past that wasn't as effective as I thought after all 6 treatments. This place has both laser machines and I was confident it would be effective without burning my skin. Additionally, Jen was really knowledgeable and explained how everything worked before she did anything. When it was time to begin I felt really comfortable. A+ for service. 6. I really loved Jen. She is the owner and technician at Lumena. She is sweet and knowledgable and anticipated everything that could possibly make me uncomfortable before I even asked. She asked me about my comfort level every step of the way adjusting the level of laser to match. This made me feel like my experience was customized just for me. My sister told me she did the same for her, adjusting for her more sensitive areas. She was also easy to talk to (trust me, I'm an introvert who generally hates interacting with people). Additionally, Jen gave be a discount price with a complimentary service I can cash in later just because! When I tried to tip her, she didn't take my tip because she felt that I had spent enough money that day. A+ for good people! If all my experiences at smaller independently owned businesses were like the experience I had today, I would definitely say bye bye to bigger franchises. read more

I've only been to Lumena twice, and I've only had a handful of spa facials in my life prior to my visits with Jen. I am not a Spa Facial expert. However, I am a person with skin, a person with feelings, a person with financial realities, and a person with four decades of living behind me and likely run-ins with skin cancer ahead. I pay attention. And I love Lumena! I don't want to fight aging (I love where I am in my life!), I *do* want to maintain the health of my skin the same way I maintain the health of my teeth and bones. At least for now, I don't want the focus to be on fillers & looking like I'm 20, but on strengthening what's there and taking care of the wear-and-tear that comes with the act of living. I want to put my hard-earned money and trust in the hands of knowledgeable people who apply their skill and serums with respect and kindness for the life I live in this skin, who don't try to upsell me on more aggressive/expensive treatments and 1000 products at the end of my visit or who try to use insecurity to push me to buy more than I need. I want to work with professional people who see me as a client and a person at the same time. Jen and the staff at Lumena are exactly, exactly this. I've loved the two Signature Facials that I've had so far. I've gone with the Signature mainly because of the customized nature-- Jen and I talk about what's going on, what's been on my mind when I look in the mirror or move through my day, and then I pass her the reins and let her do whatever she thinks would work best for the situation, with whatever tools she has at her disposal. On my first visit, after a steaming and extraction, the focus was on removing several sunspots at the top of my forehead via IPL and light dermabrasion and microneedling over the rest of my face (I have freckles all over my face, but want to keep the ones on my nose/cheeks, so we didn't do intense laser treatment on these areas). On my second visit some months later, concerns were more general, and again she used a combination of approaches, including some laser zaps to remove some broken capillary spots on my nose and cheek, some Titan pulses below my eyes to help w/ some puffiness i've been noticing there, and Clear + Brilliant around most of my face (again, going easy on the freckles I want to keep). Because there is warming of the skin involved during these laser treatments, Jen works in sections, applying cooling serums to each section she finishes before moving on to the next, which also helps minimize how much redness you're dealing with on your way out the door (I've seen some youtube videos and photos of people having ice packs applied to their faces while in-process... I suppose that might help w redness, too, but honestly it seems like overkill unless people are extreeeeemely sensitive?) Throughout, Jen kept me posted on what she was considering, checked in before beginning, answered questions about how things worked or what to expect, checked in about pain/comfort level as treatments were in-progress, and... talked music. The music on the speakers on both my visits so far were pretty much the soundtrack of my high school and college years-- the music there is part of why I've so far felt very at home, and it's apparent that she feels at-home and comfortable in her space as well. In terms of the upselling most of us have experienced elsewhere, Jen and Shay don't do it. They just don't. They actually comped me my first visit (unbelievable!) b/c of an equipment/scheduling issue, and after my 2nd visit, i walked away with the rest of a bottle of serum for free (it's not an expensive product, but it's a good one for my undereye concerns, so she just... gave it to me?). Treatments are priced extremely fairly, also. Lumena is tucked away on a quiet corner in Gowanus, not far from the Union Street R train and very close to the Union Street Bridge CitiBike dock. It's accessible, but still in a calm, quiet neighborhood. It's very relaxed. The space is compact, clean and nicely-appointed; there is a front reception area with lots of natural light from the glass doorway, and a selection of beverages and reading material. The bathroom is also compact, clean and comfortable, as is the treatment room. I have not used or seen the Infrared Sauna, but I assume it also is nicely maintained and uses its space well. Jen's pup is usually nearby, but she's well-behaved, quiet and super-sweet. Jen is the only person, afaik, who does the treatments, so scheduling is tight. She books up quickly. That said, booking is a piece of cake using the Mind/Body app. I personally can only visit once every couple of months, but whether you book only once every few months or once a week, it's very easy to check availability and schedule on the app. If you do book via the app, you pay at the same time-- so, please know, you're paying before you receive service. Please also know that you *will* receive great service, so don't let that be a concern. read more

When I moved from LA to NYC I struggled to find the right person to take care of my skin. That was, until I met Jennifer Katz! People tell me on a regular basis how great my skin looks and I owe it to her. I moved to Europe for a while and couldn't see her for about six months and thank goodness we have been reunited! My face is so much happier! I like how she analyzes the skin and makes treatment recommendations without being pushy. She never tries to shove products on me, either. Her facility is comfortable and relaxing and she is very personable and goes with the flow. We've all had that person that won't stop talking when we're trying to relax! Kaitlin has been my aesthetician for years (facials w/ laser genesis, micro, etc) and I won't go to anyone else. Originally I had been to a different laser place nearby (Tres Belle) but had a bad experience as their customer service was not great, they always tried to aggressively up-sell, and their website never worked for bookings. Plus they were quite expensive. I've now been to Lumena Twice and they are so pleasant and friendly. Sure, they try to up-sell too (everyone does) but they're nice about it and not aggressive at all. My tech was amazing and even gave me some tricks and tips on how to minimize the laser pain. Plus they are so much more affordable than other local options. Space is super cute, well maintained and I felt nothing but welcome and comfortable there. Online booking is a breeze. As a transgender woman who can't wait to have all the hair off my face as soon as possible, Lumena is a godsend. I plan to recommend them. And as soon as my hair grows out enough I definitely have to try the stylists there too! read more

I just want to recommend Lumena. My teenage son's acne was really bad. In a few short months - it's almost completely gone! She doesn't do just one method - but a combination of treatments to get to the problem. I can't even begin to list all of things she does. For me, she has helped improve my aging 50 yo skin. That said: I had been to a few spas in Manhattan before Lumena but they were A) out of the way B) very expensive C) didn't properly address my skin concerns. Lumena is everything I've been looking for and Jen Katz is very knowledgeable, funny and a pleasure to be around. I had a light microdermabrasion, Laser Genesis followed by a cooling cucumber mask and a copper serum. Very relaxing. The texture of my skin is smooth, the redness diminished, my pores seem smaller and I have been getting compliments on the radiance.
