    Veggie Kinilaw w/ Rosemary Biscuit
    Ada J.

It's about time for Filipino cuisine to make its way into the fine dining space in Houston and Lumikha is the perfect concept to pioneer it. Lumikha is a Filipino-inspired tasting menu that brings modern takes on classic Filipino dishes especially curated by Chef Bham Garcia. I stumbled upon their Instagram page and immediately invited two of my friends to come with me. Currently, they are only hosting 2 services every Sunday with only 10 seats per service. The setting is out of a high-rise apartment which makes it very intimate and envokes the feeling of getting a home cooked meal. They also encourage the guests to walk around and observe Chef Bham as he prepares the courses in the kitchen. The website advertises a 5-course tasting menu though we had a total of 7 courses: -Veggie Kinilaw on a Rosemary Cracker: a great starter. Kinilaw is the Philippines' version of ceviche. You also can't go wrong with truffle caviar. -Beef Kinilaw w/ Pandesal Tartlette: one of my favorites of the night! The beef tartare was fresh and the vinegar caviar added a nice acidity. Using the pandesal as a tartlette was so innovative. I could have had 5 more of these. -Tapsilog w/ Shaved Truffle: a really cool take on the classic Filipino breakfast. The fried rice was crispy on the outside, the beef was tender, and the quail egg added a soft texture. The truffle shavings added a great depth and umami flavor. -Scallop Bicol Express: One of the very few Filipino dishes that's traditionally spicy. I do like that he used scallop because it goes so well with the coconut milk used for the sauce. It also wasn't overly spicy but had the right amount of kick. -Octopus Kare Kare: I'll be the first to say I'm a kare kare snob because I think my mom's is the standard, but I loved chef's take on it. The peanut sauce had a slight kick to it. The eggplant was caramelized and had a subtle sweetness. Lastly, I like the unique choice of using octopus instead of oxtail. The octopus was fried but still tender and I loved the seasoning on it. -Ube with White Chocolate and Plaintain Chips: Ube is a staple in a lot of Filipino desserts. Here it was crumbled and topped with a white chocolate. We learned it had salt shavings with "asin tibuok" or salt slow roasted in coconut husks. -Chocolate Dome w/ Brownie, Raspberries, and Ube Sauce: Once chef poured the ube sauce over the dome, it made for a great "molten" brownie experience. The brownie was salted with I'm guessing the asin tibuok again. Lumikha is a passion project of close friends and I feel blessed to have witnessed their humble beginnings. Highly recommended making a reservation here and soon as spots are filling up quick. I look forward to following their journey to hopefully a brick-and-mortar soon!

Celebrated my 11th anniversary with my wife here. I never imagined Filipino food could be like this. I never imagined that it could be fine dining. I never imagined it could be elevated to this level. My eyes, mind, palate, and imagination has been opened. I can't wait for what's next. I can't wait to be back.

Would classify this as an experience rather than just a meal. Love the intimate setting where you can watch chef prepare plates, explain dishes, and chat with diners. Seating arrangement was great such that it encouraged dinners to chat with one another. Food was unique and super tasty, representing Filipino cuisine. Will be back!

Holy FK! Run to this place- it's an amazing experience you probably don't deserve. Do not miss this experience. Amazing doesn't cover it. Bhan is gifted and all the team too. Neat set up to BYOB if you have a wine collection but what they pour is very nice too. The food? Mind boggling. Can't believe the path of tastes we enjoyed.

Love the food! Can really tell that the chef puts all of his thoughts and many hours of preparation into each meals he presented to us. From presentation to tastes, you can tell there were years of experience being put into the dishes. It's top notch, and it really is a different twist to the Filipino cuisine!

The food is amazing! Chef is very creative in elevating Filipino dishes. The entire staff is accommodating and nice enough to modify due to dietary restriction. The place is small and cozy. They played Filipino alternative rock music which I like. Overall it's a great culinary experience. Would recommend!

To my surprise, I still ended up waiting 50 mins to pickup my food which was really frustrating. I understand patience and this being a small business but do believe preorders should have a speedier process! On to the food, I was pleasantly surprised by the flavors of both Vietnamese spices and traditional bbq in the rice. Not pictured I also tried the sausage which was as amazing as well. I think for the price, these were phenomenal. Unfortunately, something I ate from this spot, got me sick and due to this and the increased wait times, not sure if this will be a spot i'll revisit.

I recommend getting here very early, and preorder online if you can. I got here probably 15 minutes before they opened and there was already a line forming. Plenty of covered seating and the lawn area is pretty scenic. Here's what I ordered: Brisket BBH: the BBH is pretty good. Clean and light broth, but I think it would've benefitted from a little more sate as it was on the blander side. I think the brisket didn't really complement the dish. It was just thrown in there. It honestly would've been better without it, as the brisket makes the price tag quite steep... Pork ribs, brisket, spare ribs: gonna group these all together because they were all a bit of a letdown... Brisket wasn't as flavorful as I thought it would be for a Viet BBQ place. Both the pork ribs and spare ribs were dry. I like mine to be falling easily off the bone. Smoked turkey: most and flavorful but a little too salty. Bo La lot sausage: it was pretty flavorful, but I think if they really wanted to elevate this dish, they should wrap the sausage in lolot leaves... so it's true to its name. Curry dish: this tastes like your typical Thai red curry paste from the can. Rice was also a bit dry. Banh Xeo: probably my favorite dish. Very unique flavor... fatty, rich, savory! I would get this again. Too bad it's so small! Vietnamese slaw: quite literally (barely) pickled cabbage... not sure what makes it Vietnamese... Bok choy: typical stir fry wok style flavor. It's good, but small portion. Overall, I was a tad bit disappointed. The marketing team does a really good job of making their dishes look so delicious. But the reality was underwhelming... and pricy...

Cochinita & Co caught my attention because of owner and chef Victoria Elizondo who was a James Beard semifinalist, Culture Map chef of the year and her restaurant was ranked as one of the top 100 in Houston. The restaurant is located near EaDo and is easy to find. It's in a small strip of businesses so parking can be tight when it's busy. We came with about 30 minutes left for breakfast before they rolled out their lunch menu. There was a few tables of people enjoying their breakfast, but the place got really busy about an hour into lunch. Customer service was great. I needed help making some ordering decisions and the staff steered me in the right direction. I specifically came for breakfast. I started off with an iced Horchata Latte. This drink was excellent. You got all the flavors of a traditional horchata with the cinnamon while still having the coffee flavor present. It was a very well balanced drink. For my entree I went with their popular chilaquiles. They said this is their number one seller for breakfast and I could totally see why. I went with the red chile salsa for the spicy version, but you can also get it with a salsa verde. It comes with black beans, fried egg (you can request a different cook if you desire), crema, queso fresco and green onions. You can add a protein for an additional charge. I added chorizo to mine. Chilaquiles is not something I ever order but I had to try it here. I am so glad I went out of my comfort zone because this dish was amazing. Now I've had bites here and there of chilaquiles but was never blown away, hence me not ordering it. The chips were coated throughout and kept it's crunch through the whole meal. All the components of the dish worked in perfect harmony. I liked mine with the chorizo addition. The egg was nice and runny and I would consider adding another egg next time. It was a generous portion and a heavy meal, but I powered through the whole thing because it was so good. They had a nice display of baked goods and I could not pass up the pretty cinnamon roll. I got the last one and it looked very promising. It ended up being just ok. They served it room temp so it ate very dry. It would have been good if it was heated up and gooey. We ended up wasting most of it. Overall, this visit was long overdue but worth the wait. I'm still thinking about the chilaquiles a week later. I will most definitely be back to check out more of their menu.

This restriction wasn't made clear when we made our reservation through OpenTable. To make matters worse, the regular menu selection isn't particularly impressive, making the Happy Hour offerings the primary draw for many customers.
