I had been wanting to try this spot for awhile now and finally got a chance to preorder a few days before their weekend session. To my surprise, I still ended up waiting 50 mins to pickup my food which was really frustrating. I understand patience and this being a small business but do believe preorders should have a speedier process! On to the food, I was pleasantly surprised by the flavors of both Vietnamese spices and traditional bbq in the rice. Not pictured I also tried the sausage which was as amazing as well. I would give this place 3.5 stars if I could due to its unique concept and creative dishes, but the actual flavors and execution brings it down to 3 stars for me. I recommend getting here very early, and preorder online if you can. I got here probably 15 minutes before they opened and there was already a line forming. Plenty of covered seating and the lawn area is pretty scenic. Here's what I ordered: Brisket BBH: the BBH is pretty good. Clean and light broth, but I think it would've benefitted from a little more sate as it was on the blander side. I think the brisket didn't really complement the dish. It was just thrown in there. It honestly would've been better without it, as the brisket makes the price tag quite steep... Pork ribs, brisket, spare ribs: gonna group these all together because they were all a bit of a letdown... Brisket wasn't as flavorful as I thought it would be for a Viet BBQ place. Both the pork ribs and spare ribs were dry. I like mine to be falling easily off the bone. Smoked turkey: most and flavorful but a little too salty. Bo La lot sausage: it was pretty flavorful, but I think if they really wanted to elevate this dish, they should wrap the sausage in lolot leaves... so it's true to its name. Curry dish: this tastes like your typical Thai red curry paste from the can. Rice was also a bit dry. Banh Xeo: probably my favorite dish. Very unique flavor... fatty, rich, savory! I would get this again. Too bad it's so small! Vietnamese slaw: quite literally (barely) pickled cabbage... not sure what makes it Vietnamese... Bok choy: typical stir fry wok style flavor. It's good, but small portion. Overall, I was a tad bit disappointed. The marketing team does a really good job of making their dishes look so delicious. Khoi BBQ is one of my favorite local spots in Houston! They are what makes Houston such an exciting food city combining Texas style bbq and authentic Vietnamese flavors. When the weather is nice out, Khoi BBQ is like the ultimate backyard bbq. Their setup is super casual behind a house, with a big tent for shade and 4 large picnic tables. Their huge smoke pits just fill the air with the smell of meaty goodness. Service is relatively quick. The team at Khoi BBQ is great, shout out to Theo and Lester! Food wise, try everything!! Finally got to try this place out! It's been on my list for months but you have to plan ahead and get there early. They do a Saturday and Sunday service most weekends but check their social media for updated days. We ordered a variety of food. My favorite was definitely the brisket pho. The broth is sooooo yummy and you don't need to add anything to it like you would with normal pho. Other top item was definitely the bok choy and the curry. We also tried the Saigon spares which were very well seasoned and tasty but hard to eat. I prefer my ribs a little juicier. The lemongrass beef sausage was decent. The brisket was super moist and flavorful. Overall was generally impressed with everything. It's a cool place set up in a backyard with a tent and a bunch of tables. Got here a little later in the morning so they were out of a few things that I had wanted to try, but we were able to try most of what we wanted. The pho was good, but the broth is a bit on the sweeter side which I'm personally not a huge fan of--I tend to prefer mine more on the savory end. The curry was my favorite--it had nice spice and was super flavorful, and the meat was perfectly smokey and tender. The beef rib was also good, but a little bit tough to get off the bone. I'd been hearing the hype about this place for awhile so you know we had to check out their pop-up when we went to Houston. We ordered online in advance and I made my hungover self go to pick them up on Sunday morning. There was a pretty long line for pickup that moved quickly but then you still had to wait for your food for another 20 minutes or so. Overall, it was probably close to an hour of waiting which isn't out of the norm for good tx bbq but was a little surprising given it was ordered in advance. We were hanging with a few friends and wanted to try everything so we got: lb of brisket, lb of spare ribs, 1/2 lb of pork ribs, sausage, magenta sticky rice, vietnamese slaw, broken rice hash, and beef rib curry. The beef rib curry was far and away the star of the show. It was so good and there definitely weren't any leftovers like there was with everything else. The brisket and ribs were both 4/5 stars for me but I could see them getting to 5 starts if they start cooking every day like most bbq spots. The sides were decent but not a requirement imo. Would recommend showing up early so they don't run out of anything you might want. Showed up to the backyard pop up at 9:30am and was first in line, the owner even let me borrow one of his camping chairs (would recommend bringing a chair of your own if you plan to come early as well +/- sun umbrella). While observing the crew setup production my appetite just kept growing as I smelled the delicious BBQ to come. Food - 5/5 Brisket amazing, fatty, juicy, tender, delicious. Dino beef rib, my personal favorite. Massive and literally fell off the bone when I tried to pick it up. Beef back ribs better than pork ribs in my opinion, but nonetheless they were also both delicious. Love their take on some viet-tex fusion dishes as well that I saw people ordering, but I could only eat so much, another time. Value - 4/5 But that's most BBQ in general and this place is on par with the price range of most other popular BBQ joints, just expect to shell out the big bucks. I heard about Khói barbecue after seeing a review on Instagram, which piqued my interest. The mixture of Texas barbecue and Vietnamese influences really did speak to me, being Vietnamese myself. I first tried Khói at one of their pop ups, and enjoyed the flavors. The smokiness of the txbbq far outweighs the Viet flavors, which is probably the biggest misconception. Essentially, you're getting BBQ with Viet sides. My most recent experiences with Khói has been at their HQ on Hardy. They used to have Sunday Service, which has now expanded to Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Services once a month. The setup is minimal. A few communal picnic tables are setup. You can bring your own camping chairs. They have a canopy at the front for ordering or presale pickup. The line gets long well before they open the gates, so plan accordingly. Overall, just a good vibe. Good BBQ with unique sides and flavors. If you visit on a Sunday, get the whole hog banh xeo. read more

I was excited to try this one, went out of my way to pre-order and picked-up. I was expecting something of a fusion Vietnamese take on Texas bbq - I found the BBQ to be very Texas standard and forced into Vietnamese dishes. The price is the major downside, as you can get much better viet food and bbq for what you're paying here. Banh Xeo was not flaky at all, BBQ was quite tasty but again standard Texas fare at double the price. I found the dessert tart my favorite of the order. Whole hog garlic rice - garlicky rice with succulent whole hog meat... so yummy Beef Rib Curry - the curry had a nice kick, good flavor wish there was more sauce and more meat 1/2 pound of brisket - Smokey, moist and tender 1/2 pound Saigon Squares of beef back rib - really good flavor but not much meat on the bone. Backyard Barbecue literally! This small Asian owned family business brings Texas Viet fusion to barbecue! Everyone was SUPER nice especially once the crowd died down. The food was just as good as any bbq spot but what set it apart was the sides and rice dishes that accompanied the classic melt-in-your mouth bbq. I LOVED the Bo La Lot sausage if you're a fan of the traditional Vietnamese meat. The Brisket Pho was your standard pho (just as good as the ones you get in Chinatown) but the slab of brisket on rib was so succulent. The Broken rice hash is amazing especially if you're a fan of Com Tam - it just compliments the gravy so nicely when you parent with an order of Dino rib or brisket. The Short Rib Curry was definitely the winner in terms of dishes but I wish it came with more meat. Finish your meal with the Ca Phe Sua Da Tart if you love coffee. It's rich creamy and has the perfect balance of sweetness. I will have to come again for sure! With that being said - all of their dishes doesn't come with a lot of meat so I would get meat by the pound and order the dish you want so that you can add more meat to it especially if you're sharing. Notes on when to arrive: I showed up 40 minutes before opening and waited in my car because no line had formed and the gates were still closed as they were setting up. Turns out 8 other people were also in our car and people who didn't have the luxury of parking in front of the house had to walk back and forth to see if a line had formed yet. At around 15 minutes before everyone simultaneously lined up and there were about 10+ people right away. Found this spot on instagram & decided to drop in! I came for the bok choy and got everything but the bok choy!!! ‍ I ordered it but never received it! I'm not complaining though because everything else was delicious!!!! The beef rib was so tender & seasoned through & through! The pork ribs were delicious as well, they had a slightly crispy crust which I loved! The whole hog rice was good as well, very flavorful & garlicky! And the sausage....wow the lemongrass really gives it a great flavor!! The service was great! Everyone was so friendly and polite! I was able to sample some of their sauces. I'm so glad to finally try it!!! I've been waiting for years but always missed it whenever they popped up. Yesterday was finally the day! Located in this home lot. Outdoor bbq pits and seating. Felt the Houston sun shining down on me. I had to try everything! This is Viet-Tex! Texas style bbq with hints of Vietnamese in it. The ba bot lot sausages has the flavors I remember eating with my parents. The pho brisket was insane! The broth just soaks into the beef and melts away in your mouth. The smoked pork ribs were delicious. The red curry over beef ribs was beautiful. They even had a Vietnamese coffee tart. And I loved it even though I'm not even a coffee person. I'm ecstatic when we were able to place our order this time around. We ordered 6 items: 1lb of Brisket 1lb of Saigon Beef Spare Ribs Sausage - Bò Lá Lốt Beef Rib Curry Whole Hog, Garlic Rice Cà Phê Sữa Dá Tart We got there and went straight to the line, we were told that it'd be a 40-55-minute wait at 12:47 pm. They offer that they can send you a text when it's ready or you can wait and provide you with free water. We decided to wait. I'm not going to lie, the wait was extremely long. We didn't get our food until 2:16 pm. The music was nice though but that's the only downside of it since they do make it when you get there. I would recommend if you don't want to wait then do the text option. All that wait, we finally got our order! I'm super excited to devour it. They were all sooooo good! The meats weren't dry at all. They are extremely juicy. We really enjoyed the Beef Rib Curry. Oh, and the Cà Phê Sữa Dá Tart is so perfectly made. It was not too sweet at all! I enjoyed it very much. The pop up was in a residential area in the backyard of a house. I loved the vibes of eating backyard bbq. Got in line at 10:40am and we were third in line. Theo took everyone's order and he was super nice. We weren't terribly hungry but we did order a bit of diff things to try out. We ordered the beef rib curry, bo la lot sausage, wok-fried bok choy, and a 1/4lb of brisket. I'm Vietnamese and I'm from California so I had high expectations and was super excited to support a chef that marries viet culture and flavors with American bbq. The curry sauce was delicious and spicy however the rice was dry. It had flavor but I bit on some rice grains that weren't cooked all the way so it threw me off because it's a pet peeve of mine when rice is dry. The fried garlic was stale not crispy. I would still rate it a 3.5 out of 5. The Bo la lot sausage was the star for us. Juicy, snappy case, and bursting in flavor. It had a bit of sweetness and the betel leaf complimented that. Very good. That was 5 out of 5. The bok choy was garlicky and delicious. I don't usually eat veggies but this was easy to eat. Flavorful and the bok choy still had a bit of crunch which we liked. 4.5 out of 5. Okay the brisket didn't have any viet twist on it so I kind of regret not getting the Saigon rib. Anyway, I think because I chose 1/4lb brisket, they gave us the leanest slice which is understandable. That was my mistake. So because it was lean, it was so dry. Hardly any fat so it wasn't moist at all. It was still well seasoned. I tried dipping it in bbq sauce but it had enough flavor on its own that I think it didn't need the sauce. Been following Khoi for a long time through social media and finally found myself in Houston the same weekend they were doing a pop-up. They started at 11am and we got in line around 10:25am--we were about the 8th group in line (4 of us) and by 11 there were about 50 or so people backed up into the parking lot. Keep in mind this was in almost 100F weather during a heat wave. We had their smoked beef rib curry, mì quảng using pulled pork from the pig's head/snout I believe (also included shrimp), birdseye chili sausage, bò lá lốt sausages, a pork stuffed roll, brisket slices, and a mammoth-sized beef rib. I did wish they served brisket pho but at the same time, there's no way it would've been a good idea in this heat haha. 100% great BBQ. read more

Some of the best bbq I've ever had. Had the pork ribs, brisket, beef back rib, dino rib, whole hog garlic rice, and coffee tart. I'd skip the back rib in favor of having the dino rib and trying another thing! They're a pop-up, so you'll have to check the website to make sure they're open (caught them at a Sunday service). I had ordered online ahead of time and apparently this was the first week there was a separate line. Used to be you all waited in the same long line even if you had a pre order which seemed weird to me but I'm glad they changed it up. By the time I go the front of the 20 something pre order line, which is not always for take away because most people ate there, it was about a 15 minute wait for my order at the most. There were plenty of shaded spots and they were giving out free water so it was nice. Food was pretty tasty. Those beef Saigon ribs were wow. I'm sorry I said 1/2 pound because that was just one rib which was a good amount. The pickled vegetables were a nice touch. I didn't love the slaw but it helped take away from the heaviness of the food. Our brisket was on the fatty side but still delicious. Whole hog garlic rice was tender and flavorful and a good carb addition. Vietnamese coffee tart was also flavorful and well made. Overall a good experience and really in this digital day and age the waiting before going in and then waiting in line again was kind of nice. It looked like the staff and table setup was a bit unorganized, which I can understand for a small and newer business. As for the food the sausage was good and the pho broth was good. The issue I had was that they didn't package my pho noodles and brisket (leaving me with the broth only) and that the broth/soup container was also not sealed correctly. So by the time I got home my car seat had splashes of pho. So advice for folks planning on ordering here, please double check your bag when you leave. I was visiting Houston for OTC and just happened to stumble upon a fantastic brewery (Baileson Brewery) and outside was a fantastic pit master. Blue Smoke BBQ beats Goode Co and every other BBQ joint I have tried in Houston. The beef ribs especially were just amazing, and I know how tough it is to make a tender beef rib! They made me a custom "sample platter" since I wanted to try everything :) The home made sausage was also very good, and the brisket was cooked to perfection! The brisket is smoked for -8 hours and it showed, with a great smile ring and a perfect crust. The smoked Pastrami was maybe a tad dry compared to the rest of the meats, but also very tasty. We went to the Baileson brewery in the West U area (pretty cool place in its own right), and we waited for a little bit but the food is certainly worth the wait. We ordered brisket pho, brisket and chicken curry, and beef ribs, and everything was outstanding. That was more than enough for two people, but due to the "pop-up" nature of this restaurant we wanted to give everything a try. What a pleasant surprise! I came to this event certainly hungry and I wasn't disappointed. Their barbecue as tender as ever & beautifully done with that dark black bark and texture that just melted in my mouth. Their Ramen was good however I think if they had more time it would've been right on the money(not a bad thing) however their homemade kimchi on the other hand is a whole different story hence the reason why am writing this review... amazing amazing amazing!
