Every year I visit the Joshua Tree area and nearly every day that I am here, I visit this bakery. Over the years, the hours of service has been a bit unpredictable but every food item has always been phenomenal. Happy to report that these days they're always open! I tried Luna Sourdough Bakery this past weekend. They have a lot of bread and sweet options. My fiancé and I could not decide what to order, so we ordered three items. The raspberry tart, the chocolate banana bread, coconut chocolate macaroon. Let me just say that the macaroon is out of this world. One thing I did not is that the inside of it is dry. I would suggest eating this with milk or an iced cold drink. It wasn't too packed for a Sunday. The cashier was friendly and I found it cute how she was holding her baby and working at the same time. I sadly can't go here much anymore because it turns out I'm allergic to the glyphosate in wheat. (Someone told me that I could probably eat sourdough even though I couldn't eat regular wheat, so I ate a whole flatbread from Luna and broke out in hives. ) My only wish for Luna is that they would make 1 truly great breakfast pastry that is gluten free so I could come here all the time. Their current GF options are either not tasty or not great breakfast items (almond cookie, coconut macaroon and a very hard to eat bread loaf). I know from personal experience with Pamela's GF baking mix just how easy it is to make a delicious chocolate GF banana bread that is just as good as the wheat version. Luna could probably even make one where their wheat eaters wouldn't even notice the difference. Anywho, that is my gf fantasy. In conclusion, if your body can tolerate sourdough, get to Luna! A very cute place. This was on our list during our Joshua Tree weekend, and stopped by on our way back to LA. We got the smoked salmon sandwich and the brie and jam on a sourdough roll. Ok. I can't believe I'm gonna say this (because who complains about too much food), but. There was way too much brie. Like, it was a whole brick o' brie in it. Just...too much. I think it would have been perfect with like, half of it. Again, I can't believe I'm complaining about generosity, but there you have it. Hey Luna, trying to save y'all some resources (or something). Otherwise, things were delicious, as expected. Their water container, which I guess has an intricate filtration system, takes a LONG time to filter water after it's filled. We parked on the street, as the parking lot was very small, but there is plenty of street parking. Bathroom is singular, single-stalled, and not gendered. read more

This place was a recommendation from my friend that we stopped at in Yucca Valley on the way to Joshua Tree. I'm glad we stopped but was surprised by how expensive everything was. The loaf of bread that we got was fresh and delicious and lasted us basically the whole weekend so despite its steep price ($14) I was very glad we got it. They cut it into slices for us there! The sandwiches we ordered were good but not worth over $20 each. I would definitely come back here and try their pastries and other breads the next time we're in Joshua Tree, but unfortunately cannot justify the sandwich prices again. Honestly very very underrated place. The food was phenomenal and fresh. I believe we were greated by the owner as she is holding her baby. We got ciabatta sandwich, the burrata sandwich and the ham & cheese sandwich. The buns were very fresh and fluffy. The portions were very generous. The combinations were very tasty and exciting. We did sit outdoors which was perfect at that time of the day. Highly highly recommend the place: I would say it's slightly in the higher side of prices for breakfast/brunch but honestly the quality and generosity in the portions totally justified. We actually ended up coming back the next day for another yummy and tasty brunch. We had the salmon and the prosciutto & goat cheese sandwiches. The sandwiches at Luna are absolutely massive. It's a small place, perfect for grabbing a sandwich or pastry to take into the park. Sandwiches are available starting at 9am, and everything is handmade in-house in small batches. The super friendly staff greeted us and helped us decide what to order because so many items sounded great. I went with the Ham & Brie with cornichon on ciabatta and it took me almost 3 meals to finish, so I would say aim to share. Just look at my photo, the amount of brie on the sandwich is crazy! You'll see all of the breads and pastries on display and we couldn't resist splitting a slice of the Chocolate Chip Banana Bread as well which was just as awesome. I did notice that the ciabatta bread had little fuzzies stuck all over it, like it had been sitting on a towel, which did put me off a little but I would still come back for the fresh bread and great flavors. read more

I am a Luna-tic for Luna Sourdough Bakery!!! If in the Joshua Tree area, this is a must stop for amazing breads!!! I am still thinking about their whole wheat focaccia!!! If there is a line out the door, don't hesitate and get in line. It moves pretty fast and is so worth it!! The sourdough comes out later in the day and unfortunately the timing was off for me as we headed out of town (came twice in the same morning, haha), but the whole wheat focaccia was amazing and the bread I didn't know I needed in my life until I had it!! It kept perfect on the trip home and you know it is going to be good when the oils soak the paper bag!! We also got breakfast sammies and an array of pastries! Everything was 10/10 good!!! Okay, so Luna Sourdough Bakery is cute, very Pacific Northwest vibes, very "I raise artisan chickens and wear wool socks year-round." The pastries? Solid. The bread? Good. The treatment if you're not a regular? ...interesting. I walked in feeling hopeful and walked out feeling like I needed to submit a résumé just to be recognized. The regulars here get greeted like returning celebrities,hugs, laughs, staff knowing their entire life story. Meanwhile, I'm standing there like a confused extra in the background waiting for someone to hand me my scripted line. Don't get me wrong, the food is tasty. But the "Oh, YOU'RE new here?" energy was strong. I'm not saying they completely ignored me... I'm just saying the croissant got more eye contact than I did. I commute from my home in Twentynine out to OC/SD counties and Luna Bakery has become a regular stop for me. The warm smiles and good service offer a little bit more positivity for what can sometimes be a not so fun drive. Today, was no exception, but today is a Sunday, three day weekend, and the day after Valentine's Day...plus I didn't leave until late morning. I walked in, and they were sold out of my usual pastry choices, no cookies, they had two slices of carrot cake and one just sold so I did what anyone else would do and I bought the last carrot cake...absolutely the best carrot cake I've ever had and I can't believe I didn't try it sooner. I absolutely LOVE this bakery and visit it every time I'm in Yucca Valley. The space is small but feels so welcoming and warm the second you come in. They have such a wide variety of breads, pastries, and even some amazing sandwiches. My favorite thing, hands down, is the sourdough cinnamon roll. My friends and I visited Luna for a quick snack/breakfast while visiting Joshua Tree. Luna gets pretty busy, and we had a bit of a wait. The staff are all great and were doing their best though! I ordered the olive flatbread and a lemon tart. I was going to get a sandwich instead, but the wait time for it was pretty long. I'm glad they let me know though! Both were pretty good, though pricey. The olives on the flatbread were great with a nice fresh olive/olive oil flavor. The lemon tart had a nice crust. There's indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor seats at the time were all taken, so we opted to sit outside. The street is a bit busy though. Thanks for having us! read more

My wife and I were on our way to the grand opening of the Rivian Outpost at Joshua Tree on 12/8/2024 and decided to stop here to grab a quick lunch. The reviews were solid so we wanted to give it a try, too. Upon walking into the bakery, we could smell the freshly baked bread and pastries. The employees greeted us and provided recommendations and information about items on their menu. We ultimately decided on ordering the Castelvetrano Olive Flatbread and the Tuna Salad Sandwich on sourdough. Both items were absolutely delicious! The bread itself was chewy, but soft at the same time. The ingredients were definitely fresh on both items. My wife isn't typically a fan of olives, but she thoroughly enjoyed the flatbread due to its amazing quality. We will definitely stop here again the next time we visit Joshua Tree National Park! read more

I have been going to this place since it opened. The product consistency was lacking at the beginning, but the that wasn't from lack of trying. I really want to give this place my business, but the inconsistentency of the bread is really making it hard. They obviously don't have a proofer, so the chew on the bread changes from season to season - the rise in the winter is just not there. Plus, the last two times that I went, they DID NOT have baguettes at 10 in the morning. 10! If you don't want to serve consistently good bread at a reasonable hour, then just take it off the menu! In the past, when they didn't have baguettes, I would go to focaccia or chiabatta. The chiabatta looked like it was day old, and there wasn't any focaccia. Disappointed read more

Drove by this bakery on the way to our Airbnb in Yucca Valley and noticed it closed at 4:30PM or so and was like, what kind of hotshot bakery is this that it can close so early and proceeded to try and shoehorn a visit to this bakery the next two days and decided to go here to pick up lunch to take to our day at The Living Desert Zoo in Indian Wells. Large and good-sized portions with fresh bread and a solid amount of filling whether it be the prosciutto and goat cheese one I got or the heirloom tomato one others in my party did. The kind people behind the counter were reasonably quick with preparing our order (a group of 6). On top of their sandwiches, they also have various pastries and baked goods options that we didn't get to try (luckily, because half of us didn't even finish our sandwich.) This bakery, with its wonderful baker-owners, Julia and Ian, is probably the best thing to happen in YV since we first moved up into Burns Canyon 17 years ago. The bread, pastries (sweet and savoury!), cookies, cake (carrot!) and then also their amazing sandwiches, well, it is all to die for. During my 40+ minute drive down from the canyon I am thinking the whole time, 'What should I get today?' And so looking forward to eating it. About the sourdough bread (everything here is sourdough of course)... I have been baking sourdough bread, using the same starter, for the last 16 years (along with waffles and pancakes and biscuits) -- inspired by what I first found at San Francisco's Tartine and soon after at Luna -- and Luna's bread continues to inspire me (I wish I could bake it so perfectly every time). I stopped at Luna on my way home to L.A from Palm Springs. It was a cute and quaint little place. The staff were very kind and helpful. I ordered the salami sandwich, Brie and jam sandwich, lemon tart, pumpkin tart, and sourdough loaf. The Italian sandwich was out of this world! It's a sandwich I will Dream about in my sleep. The bread was perfect, the salami , the coarse mustard spread, perfect mini pickles in the side. Absolutely insane! Brie sandwich was super tasty, I wish the bread was a tad bit crispy, but that's an easy fix. The lemon tart was a Rock star and even my daughters, who are picky loved it. I would drive back to LA. Indoor seating with AC was a win, and they let our pups hang out inside--major points for that. Service was also really great - friendly and fast. Now, the $20 sandwich. Was it tasty? Yes. My husband and I came to Luna Bakery as the first stop when we arrived in Yucca Valley around lunchtime on a Friday. The bakery is casual but has a trendy and chic vibe. There were also several other people already eating outside and placing orders when we arrived. Service was friendly and we got our food very quickly after ordering. My husband got a sandwich for himself and I got the kale and pecorino flatbread. We also shared a potato salad. The flatbread was excellent. It had a dense, airy texture. The flavors of the bitter kale and the sharpness of the pecorino complemented each other well. The potato salad was also good. My husband got a cookie which he enjoyed, but I didn't; it was a little too dry for me. Definitely five stars and two thumbs up for this bakery. My boyfriend and I were on a long weekend getaway from the hustle and bustle of LA. The location is fairly easy to find since it's on a busy street. Parking is limited but lots of street parking. Service was fairly quick and they have an array of sourdough to choose from. I initially purchased the focaccia and loved it so much that I "accidentally" gave my boyfriend the wrong directions on our way back home. So, i ended up purchasing another loaf of focaccia and a cheese danish to reward myself for the trick I pulled. I took half of the focaccia to work and shared with my coworkers with some cheese and balsamic / EVOO. Everyone loved it! Cheese danish didn't make it home since I scarfed it all down. I first found this spot in April thinking it was a coffee shop. While they aren't a coffee shop I was not disappointed because the breads were amazing! Went back today while in town because I had to get food fresh breads. The staff was friendly and the restaurant was quaint. I'm so glad we stopped at Luna Sourdough Bakery, which was recommended by the reception desk at our hotel. The display case of pastries and bread was absolutely beautiful and mouthwatering! Sam helped us, and she was incredibly friendly--she took the time to answer all my questions. We ordered the Burrata and Pesto, which was a perfect combination of sun-dried tomatoes and creamy burrata. We also had the Raspberry Jam & Brie, and it was simply divine on their sourdough burger bun. The bread itself is amazing, and the portions are just right. We went for lunch on a weekday and there was a steady flow of customers, yet the service was quick and efficient. The best croissant I've had in my life was in Paris at Du Pain et Des Idees, life changing quality. Du Pain et Des Idees set the bar so high it's only made my life difficult as they truly ruined me. The croissants at Luna Sourdough Bakery are divine. They're comparable in quality to the croissant at De Pain et Des Idees in Paris and totally worth the $7 price tag. These croissants are expertly made, crispy crunch and delicious. ARTELICE in Los Angeles also has a fantastic croissant. Honestly quite expensive but if you know the struggle of finding a croissant comparable to France's quality then you'd pay possibly even $10 for a croissant in America. The baguette was also incredible $6 and it was so crispy and perfect. I thought $6 was super fair. The pain au chocolate and pain au Nutella are also fabulous. Their kale flat bread was ok, probably would just stick to their croissants. The potato salad was good, a touch too mayoey and a bit pricy at $9. Excellent service, very stylish simple and extremely clean interior. Even cleaner restroom. If I had to take a guess I'd say the owner(s) probably take a lot of pride in their craft and also treat their employees well. Pro tip: call in your order, pay over the phone. Secure your goods and make for a seamless pick up. They do sell out. Croissants were sold out by 12 or so on Saturday when we arrived. Sunday morning we got there at 9:30am and they were generously stocked. However when we drove by just around 10am on Sunday the line was out the door. This is why I'm saying to call ahead and pay over the phone, you're welcome. The other benefit is that if you paid over the phone you can arrive at your leisure and skip the line and just pick up since it was already paid for. Trust me, a lot of people do this they have a whole rack for orders made and paid over the phone. Parking in designated lot, but also noticed people parking by the gas station side and parallel parking on the street. Well behaved doggies are welcome to dine on the patio. read more
